More Than 200 Years Of Evolution

This cat is a big cat lover’s cat. Although hugely popular outside of the state, these beautiful long-haired cats did actually originate in Maine. The seaports of the Colonies were breeding  ground for rats, and thus attracted heavy bodied and powerful short haired cats, that had come from European countries such as France and England. Back than cats were used for rat control on any ship crossing the Atlantic, and than most of them simply let loose. It was during the formative years that our new country began to see ships from the Baltic and Scandinavian areas, bringing with them, their own breed of cats. Though smaller, these cats had something that let them adapt to the harsh climate of the central seaboard states, they had unbelievable long hair. The current residence had no problem crossbreeding with these cats, and so began the evolution of the uniquely American breed, known as the Maine Coon Cat.

For anyone who owns one, they are primarily known as a big cuddly, sweet, and an intelligent companion. Their evolution can be explained like that of any other pioneer. The thick weeds and bush of the New England countryside no doubt had something to do with its long, deep chested, rectangular body. Being able to fight the local carnivores, explains their incredible mass and strength. If you are just starting to consider them as a pet, the first thing you will notice is the 7-8 diameter furry tail, known as a brush. For those of you that are considering one for the first time you should know this. Although they have the look of a Persian, the Coon has no exotic wild-species bloodlines in them, and are at least 3-4 times the size of one. If there are young children you must also be made aware of the cat’s long  "saber-tooth" like teeth. Remember, though the modern Maine Coon is sweet and cuddly, its roots are still that of a hunter. With all that said, despite its size and strength the Maine Coon is for the most part  friendly, playful, and good with children.

A Gentle Giant
Guinness World Record Holder

As I have stated, the Maine Coon is one of the largest breeds of domestic cats. In 2006 a purebred named Leo was awarded “Longest Cat,” measuring 48 in(129cm) in length, from the tip of his nose to the tip of his tail. Incidentally, he weighed 35 lb. or
(16 kg). Although his age is not stated, he would have been at least three or four, because the Coon doesn’t normally reach his full potential size until then. Before you get too excited, that by no means is anywhere near the normal size of a Maine Coon. On the average the male will weigh between 13 and 18 lbs. ( 5.9 and 8.2 kg) with females weighing between 8 and 12 lb. (3.6 and 5.4 kg). The height of the adult will also vary, 10 and 16 in (25 and 41 cm),
and length, including the tail, which can reach lengths of up to 14 in (36 cm), up to 40 in (100cm).

Can the Maine Coon Be Trained?
Intelligent But Stubborn

For anyone considering a Coon, or if you just recently acquired one, or you have one that is completely running the show, the answer is yes. If not controlled, it will turn your furniture into scratching posts, jump up wherever it chooses, and be so aggressive as to keeping friends and visitors away. Not to mention biting and clawing, to name just a few problems you’ll have if not properly trained.

There are all sorts of places you can go for help. If you are looking into professional breeders and trainers, make sure that they specialize in the Maine Coon. There are of course all sorts of Forums on the web that might be able to give you some guidance. In my research I came across someone that took a full-grown Coon and trained it. Boy, wouldn’t you like to have her help? Well, she has made her information available, and whether you are new to the breed or a seasoned veteran you will discover something new so that you can appreciate and live a great life with your wonderful cat. Of course I can’t go into everything that she will be able to help you with, but if you want to learn more about The Secrets of the Maine Coon, including a year of personal e-mail help, please go to: my RecomMANNdations

Your dog may be feeling the effects of aging and you may not even realize it. Larger dogs age faster than smaller dogs, so even at 5 years old, your canine pal may be starting to slow down. I think we expect our dogs to always be the same playful, active pup we've always known, and 5 years old sounds so young. The truth is, even if we can't see obvious signs, things are going to start changing. All dogs, depending on size and breed, age differently but any dog by the age of 7 can be considered a senior.

So, other than a graying muzzle, how do you know if your pooch is feeling his age? The first thing you'll notice is that your dog is slower. He'll be slower when he runs to catch the ball, slower getting up the steps and slower getting up from his nap. A dogs metabolism slows as he ages, so he will be less active and require fewer calories.

As dogs get older,  their hearing and eyesight start to fail, just like it does for us. This can cause them to startle more easily and consequently, they feel insecure. They may even react with aggression. In some cases senior dogs feel general anxiety, so things that never bothered them before may upset them. A dog that had no fear of thunderstorms may now be afraid. Your senior dog may now suffer from separation anxiety. Your dog may walk around in circles or seem disoriented. If your dog feels stressed or anxious, he may start whining, barking or even howling.

Aside from the anxiety and behavior issues, your senior canine pal, may develop arthritis, diabetes, bladder stones, or incontinence. Dental disease becomes a real issue with older dogs. Rotting or broken teeth can lead to infections and trouble eating. It is a good idea to take your dog for a thorough exam so your veterinarian can screen for signs of age related problems.

There are things you can do and ways you can help your pet as he ages. It's important to remember that just because he's slower, it doesn't mean he can't play. You just have to adjust the play to his level. Even an older dog needs regular exercise. If he shows a lack of interest in going for a walk, try something different. Put him in the car and drive to a new park for a walk. If your bigger dog has trouble getting in the car, you can get a ramp for him to get up and down.

If your pooch starts showing separation anxiety when you leave, don't make a big deal out of leaving or returning home. Make sure he has something to chew to occupy his mind and relieve stress. A toy designed for older chewers is good and you can stick a treat in it to make it more interesting. Make sure he is comfortable. You can get him an bed specially designed for dogs with arthritis. If you have to be gone all day, ask a neighbor or family member to come over and let your dog out and play with him for a while. This will help break up his day. Senior dogs feel stressed more easily, so avoid any major changes in his routine. This is not a good time to bring a new pet into the household.

Another thing you can do to help your dog through his senior years, is to give him a pet vitamin once a day. Make sure it is an all natural pet vitamin with no additives or fillers. A good quality pet vitamin can ease some of your dogs symptoms of aging. A vitamin with glucosamine and chondroitin supports joint health. An all natural vitamin will provide immune system support, aid in digestion and protect your dog against certain cancers.

The most important thing you can do for your pet is keep him an active part of your family. Be understanding of his changes and challenges. Continue to love your dog and care for him. Don't assume your dog is happy to be left behind to sleep all day, while the family life goes on around him. Your dog has loved you unconditionally all his or her life and now your family pet needs you to do the same.

1. Parrots need daily contact with their owners. – Some kinds need more care and attention than others. Cockatoo, Lorry and Jacob need special care every day. Amazons, Budgie, Conures small Africans parrots need also (though not that much) their owners’ daily attention for keeping up their spiritual tone and socializing.

2. Breeding a parrot could be a very expensive pleasure. – The issue expenses include buying a bird, a big enough bird cages and a first check-up by qualified vet. Subsequently the other required expenses are for food, MANY bird toys, a routine check up, whetting up of the wings (it’s required, not obligatory), nails and beak and sometimes help from a vet in case of emergency. Birds medicine is a very specialized field. Normally, the tests and procedures in the birds treatment cost a lot. Furthermore, it’s typical for birds to express symptoms of some kind of illness when the illness is in an advanced phase (in case when it passes sharply). Because of that fact to start a treatment in this phase is something we often call “emergency help” and as a result it’s more expensive.

3. The parrots are loud. – They live in nocks and make big groups. In the wild they keep contact one another, by the sounds they make when there is no visual contact between them. The bird has the ability to accept you as a member of its flock and that is why the sounds it makes can be interpreted as “keeping in touch” with you. Early in the morning, at sunrise, parrots call the nock to start the new day. At sunset they call the nock again to gather it and execute alighting in order to prepare themselves for their night sleep. These sounds are normal for the parrots and their owners should not get angry and harm them using mean words and to restrain them in those moments.

4. Not all parrots speak. - Although almost all parrots have the ability to learn to speak the human language, not all of them have the desire to start to speak. Some of the most chatty parrot species are the Jacob, Budgie, Yellow-forehead Amazon and double yellow-forehead Amazon, but even for these ones there is no guarantee they shall do it.

5. Birds love to make a mess all around them. – They have their very important place in the wild world because their main function is to “afforest” the wood. Regarding to that, the bird takes a piece of its food and the rest throws on the ground. So be ready to spend a lot of your time cleaning after your parrot. You must feed your bird only seeds. Variety makes birds healthy. Consider just for a moment: how long do you think you shall remain in good health if your food includes only seeds and water? That goes for the parrots, too. Actually, there is a good rule regarding the birds which says: “If something is good for me, it’s good for my parrot as well”. You should try the system with the three bowls: Fresh water, Fresh fruits and vegetables, packed food, nuts and seeds.
6. Parrots need to take bath regularly. – The origin of most of them coming from the rainforests where they take a shower app. 3 times a week, no matter if they want it or not. The clean water they use is very important for their feathers. Some of them prefer taking a bath under the shower with us, others – to be splashed with water (for example with sprinkler for bedewing flowers) or to be placed under the stream of water in the sink. Often they also prefer taking a bath in a bowl filled with water. You should try each of these methods until you find the preferred way of your parrot for taking a bath.

7. Parrots like to destroy things. – In their natural environment they spend 90% of their day searching for and consuming food. Living in our homes they receive their food without making any effort which results in some need inside them to “rediscover” and fulfil their time, which normally they spend in searching for food. If you don’t provide them regularly with different bird toys they could start to use your furniture for that purpose. Parrot toys are made specially to be ruined. If the toy cannot be destroyed in that point, there is possibility the bird might not be interested in it. It’s recommended to replace the toy with a different one periodically, to avoid the parrot to get bored.

8. The parrots bite. – Sometimes they bite the hand that feeds them and the people they are familiarized with. This is not like a dog’s bite. It’s true, they bite in some cases because of aggression but more often it is a result of fear or anger. Sometimes as a part of their daily communication, they “bite” each other and expect their natural behaviour to be tolerated by us. Biting is one of their means of communication which makes many people feel themselves hurt and ignored by their pets. To state that simply: birds have an ability to communicate perfectly. By biting they say simply: “I don’t like that” and this way of their expression is so effective. People often are not that honest and convicting and tend to be resentful, when someone else or even a bird is more honest in its attitude than us.

9. The parrots are not appropriate pets for kids. – They are not good choice for kid’s pets because of their incredible intellect. They live long and require daily attention and contact with their “human flock”. A kid goes through a lot of changes and phases of his/her style of living (school, marriage, building a family, moving etc.) which makes it almost impossible to keep a life-long relationship with such an intelligent creature as a pet.

Freshwater fish come in a variety of shapes and colors. Each one is beautiful and unique in its own way, but one species stands out from among the rest. That one is the Siamese Fighting Fish, also known as the Betta Fish. When healthy, these fish are very hardy and brightly colored. They enhance the look of any tank. Therefore, they are becoming very popular. However, many people do not know how to properly care for them.

The most important thing to know about these fish is that males do not like other males. If you put two males together, they will fight and eventually kill each other. However, a male Betta will live peacefully with several female Betta Fish at once. Secondly, because these fish can breathe air, they do not require a lot of space. They can successfully be kept in a smaller tank if the proper conditions are met. However, they will be happier and more brightly colored if they have more space to swim. It is also important to remember that Betta do not like temperature variations. They will be much healthy if their water temperature is kept at a steady temperature of about 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

Although these fish can and do eat plants, plants do not contain the nutrition that they need. Betta Fish are carnivores and therefore have to eat meat. Small worms, such as blood worms, are a good food source. They can also eat brine shrimp and other crustaceans. Also remember that a Betta's waste products, just like those of other fish, produce a lot of ammonia. If this builds up in their water, it can eventually kill them. Therefore, it is important to periodically remove old water and add new.

The most common misconception about Betta fish is that males will fight with all other fish. As mentioned earlier, males will fight with other males but they will not fight with all other fish. A single male Betta fish makes an excellent addition to a community tank. Many other community fish will co-exist peacefully with male Bettas. However there are some fish that should be avoided. Stay away from fin nipping fish like Tiger Barbs and Serpae Tetras. The long flowing fins of Bettas will only be targets for these fish. Also avoid other Gouramis, they are often territorial and could fight over territories in the fish tank.

Betta prefer large aquariums, and do much better there. However, if you do decide to keep your Betta Fish in a smaller tank, there are several things to remember. First, keep your tank out of direct sunlight and drafts, as these can change the water temperature. Second, treat the water and change a fourth of it several times a week. Third, cover your tank with a ventilated lid. This will keep your fish from escaping its tank while still allowing air flow. Lastly, think about putting some plants in your tank. These will help increase the quality of the water, as well as give your Betta some cover. If you follow these simple steps, you should be able to enjoy your Betta for a long time to come.

Many people who own Keeshond's teach the breed to do some great tricks. Aside from being agility trained, the breed can do many other fascinating tricks. What we think of as tricks are merely considered to be fun and play for the Keeshond. The dogs have their own special tricks, as well as ones that owners can teach them. Because the breed gets bored easily, an owner should not try to make them perform all the tricks in rapid succession, they will end up being frustrated and refuse to listen. Keeshond are natural performers, as well as naturally clownish as they try their best to please their owners.

Keeshonds enjoy learning simple tricks like roll over, shake, and can flip and devour a dog treat from the tip of their nose. The dog is also adept at getting their lead and taking themselves out for a "walk." The bodily ability of a Keeshond allows them to stand up erect on their back legs and do a little jig. The dog enjoys performing tricks for a treat, which is their primary motivation for doing tricks in the first place. You can also teach the dog to put away their toys, which is an actual trick in getting them to do it.

Keeshonds love to show off! They can be taught to jump the fence and get a ball and jump right back over the fence again. Though this is an adorable trick, they can also decide to hike the fence at will, with practice. The Keeshond is an agile and flexible breed, doing many tricks in the show ring is another activity the dogs enjoy. Running, tunneling, jumping and searching for objects are just some of the more difficult tricks the dogs can learn. You can easily teach your Keeshond to do simple and even complex tricks with time, patience and training.

Once you decide to train your Keeshond to perform tricks, you should begin with the easy ones like shake, dance and play dead. These tricks can be more easily taught if you use a food reward to motivate the dog. Once you have mastered a few of the simpler tricks, you can move on to more difficult ones, but it depends on whether or not the dog has mastered the easier ones. Keeshonds have a mind of their own and may prefer doing one type of trick over another, they set their own pace and preference.

You should never expect your Keeshond to master tricks in one day or expect them to perform for long periods of time. The dog can grow frustrated and will easily be distracted, doing something they more enjoy. The dog wants to please its owner, but you have to give them motivation and attention as well. Even if the trick is attempted and takes a few times to perfect, you should still reward the dog for making an effort. If you do not provide a reward for the Keeshond, they are likely to give up entirely. With time and patience, you can train your Keeshond to do a wide variety of tricks and make the most of their natural performing abilities.
