Parrot Play
Parrot Play
Games to play with a large parrot?
What sort of games or activities do you do with your large parrot? I own a 4 year-old male Umbrella cockatoo and am just looking for some more ideas to have fun with him. ^^
I play all sorts of games with my Grey.
- We play catch: I throw a plastic ball (with big vents in it so he can pick it up with his beak ) and he throws it back.
-He also has a small basketball hoop so he shoots hoop for me.
-I have a plastic water bottle I put some beads in so it rattles, and we get on the floor and he chases it around and butts it with his head. He also can push the bottle around with his foot.
-We play a rudimentary form of soccer, but it takes 2 people and Parker. It's "keep away" soccer. 2 people roll a ball to each other with Parker in the middle and he tries to intercept the ball. Once he gets the ball, he gets to decide who to pass it to. It's hilarious!
-He also will put rings on a peg if I ask him. He can only count to 2 but he knows the difference if I ask him to put one ring or two on the peg.
-He's learning colors. He has the color yellow down solid. We're now working on green. So if I ask him for the yellow ring, he'll pick that up and give it to me and then I'll ask him to put it on the peg.
-I will throw a paper plate on to the floor of his cage and he'll dive for it in a mock attack. Then he'll get back up on his perch and I throw it again for another attack!
-He'll hang upside down on his training stand and I'll say "Tickle foot!". He then sticks his foot out and I tickle it and laugh along with him.
These are just a few of the things I do to communicate with my Grey-he also helps me fold laundry, in his own way of course, by dragging a sock around but he feels like he's included in the process.
I think it's wonderful that you want to train your 'Too to play games. This is a form of communication with Parrots. Tthe more you train and play with them, the more they learn and the better relationship you will have with them.
You can also teach tricks which basically is just another game for them...another way of comunicating with them. Positive reinforcement training is the way to go with this and there are tons of websites that will help you learn how to train using this method.

Senegal parrots are very playful but do not like being alone, either leave the radio on or some music, they crave attention, someone in the room with them. Try not to allow them on the floor, they can pick up germs and infections from other animals or humans walking there, or they will stalk you as they think you are prey. Never allow the Senegal Parrots to play with your cat or dog or other birds when you are not there - it could spell trouble.
Senegal parrots have the mentality of a 4-5 year old child, they do get jealous, so give them what you are giving your other birds, mine wants to eat what we eat. No avocado or chocolate, they are deadly. They love peanut butter, just a thin spreading as a treat. They are all there own unique self, even if they were all born from the same parrot, they are there own little bird.
There diet consist mainly of seed mixture of nuts, seeds, lean meats, cookies, fruits and vegetables- cooked or in its natural state. They do love pasta of every kind, spaghetti with some sauce on it, eggs as well, omelet. They can pretty much eat what we do, mine loves low GI-bread that has all the seeds in. His favorite fruits are grapes, paw paw, pears, apples, guavas.
My Senegal parrot has a cage for small parrots, he has lots of toys, they do get bored with them quickly. He loves his swing, wooden pegs that I clip on his cage, he loves his toy with the wooden banana that is flavored it has a bell on, if he wants attention he will bash it back and forth. They need lots of out time, but there are times they want to be inside. They are a pleasure to have around. I highly recommend a Senegal as a pet, beware around small children. They give you a lot of pleasure, but still are very demanding, it is worth it in the long run.
