What can I do to keep my Drinkwell Platinum fountain from overflowing?

Everytime I fill it, it overflows... even ignoring the reservoir and just filling the bowl. Our cats love the free-falling water and I bought it online so I'd like to find a solution without having to send it back...
Thx, everyone... I cleaned it and it seems to have stopped overflowing. I'll make sure to clean it once a week and hopefully that'll fix the issue. I still haven't filled the reservoir - I'll wait a few days and just fill manually for now. I will take the advice from the FAQ regarding the reservoir.

Oh, and my instruction booklet doesn't have troubleshooting/FAQ! Too weird.

Why is my fountain overflowing when I attach the reservoir?

First, make sure there is a black rubber O-ring in the base of the reservoir lid. It should be located in the groove in
the lid and not on the canister itself.
Try loosening the reservoir lid. The lid needs to fit snuggly, but not too tight. Over-tightening will cause the O-ring to
compress.
Make sure the fountain and the reservoir are on the same level surface. If you are using a mat, make sure the mat is
under the fountain and reservoir.
