Must clay pottery be fired in a kiln for it to be "fit" for use in human consumption?
I've noticed that all the clay I look at in the craft shops, etc, is labeled as being unsuitable for use in human consumption, even though many are also labeled "non toxic" (???). Is there a special type of clay that is "fit" for use with food, or is it the kiln-firing process that makes it safe, or what? I mean, I don't think that indiginous peoples had access to kilns or glazes when they were using their pots (?)... so, I'm a little confused here...
It has to be water based clay and kiln fired, I don't know if some of the clay you are looking at isn't polymer clay or other substitutes.
Unglazed pottery is also not regarded as suitable for food as the liquids from the food can seep into the fired clay. Which is long term not hygienic, but that's something people didn't worry that much about in past times.
Then the glaze has to be food safe. Acid food can leach out elements from glazes, so if those elements are toxic it's not food safe. Using nevertheless won't kill you instantly, but is not going to be good for you in the long run.
