Choosing a Pet Bird

Choosing a pet bird is very different compared to shopping for clothes. This is because it requires a lot of commitment to make sure that this creature will get all the love and care that it needs so consider a few things when you decide to go to the pet store.

Birds come in all sizes. There are big ones and there are small ones. Just remember, that the bigger they are, the bigger also the commitment in keeping it. Bigger birds are louder and messier so if you are not up for that, better stick to a small or medium sized bird.

People who want a bird as a pet are intrigued by parrots, especially with how smart they are There are to many birds and species to keep count of on earth. What Not To Feed Your Pet Bird

This articles offers specific foods that you, being a bird owner, should never feed to your pet bird.  If you have questions concerning a particular kind of bird seed or fruit, consult your veterinarian.  Buy your bird seed from a reputable producer like ABBA or Kaytee and read about the native diets of your bird species and supply a diet that includes bird seed, fruit, and vegetables that closely resembles the natural food source of your particular bird species.    

Prior to investing in a bird as a pet, read and gather information on specific things to do and not to do.  There are numerous varieties of bird that, if cared for correctly, will be lifetime companions and family members.  

Every conscientious bird owner should know there are certain foods and certain ingredients that must never be fed to a pet bird.  Here's a list of six (6) food items that should not be fed to a bird or caution must be taken in the preparation of the food.  

1.  Chocolate, unfortunately, is absolutely not for the birds.  That wonderful candy bar can have disastrous consequences for your bird.  Chocolate is incredibly damaging to a bird's digestive system.  Initially, chocolate will cause vomiting and diarrhea.  It can then affect the central nervous system resulting in  seizures and eventual death.  Chocolate and food containing chocolate ought to remain well out of reach of your feathered friend.   

2.  Though fruits are without a doubt good for birds, there are actually types that should by no means be given to birds. These include apples, apricots, cherries, peaches and pears.  The reason is quite surprising.  These fruits have minute amounts of cyanide within their seeds which is an incredibly harmful and a likely lethal substance even in trace quantities.  Birds can eat portions of these types of fruit so long as it is cut away from the seeds or core.  Also, always clean fruit before giving to your pets, your children or yourself.  Damaging chemicals present in pesticides are often detrimental to small animals such as birds.

Avocado is one fruit that should not be given to your pet bird.  Skin of the avocado may cause cardiac distress and heart failure in particular bird species. Better safe than sorry with the avocado so don't even bother letting them try it. 

3.  Certain kinds of vegetables are often harmful.  Onions may cause severe digestive problems and mushroom, which is really not a vegetable but a fungus, can cause respiratory distress, kidney failure and death.  While some veterinarians and pet owners are concerned about giving pet birds certain vegetables like potatoes and tomatoes, these vegetables are not unsafe if they are cleaned and sliced prior to giving it to your pet.  Remember, consult your veterinarian if you have concerns about any food source, including fruits, vegetables and bird seed.     

4.  Although you may like to have a few, never ask your pet bird if he or she wish to join you for a drink.  Alcohol depresses a birds organs which, in some cases, can be lethal.  Caffeine is incredibly harmful to birds also.  It causes cardiac malfunction in birds and, in some cases, could lead to arrhythmia, cardiac arrest, hyperactivity, and increased heartbeat.  Keep alcoholic and caffeinated drinks well from reach and from areas where your bird can access them.  Other than water, pure fruit or vegetable juice is good.  It can provide additional nutrition your bird needs.  

5.  Salt or products containing salt should not be given to birds.  Like in humans, excess salt often results in dehydration, kidney dysfunction, thirst and death.  Due to their small size, it does not require a large amount of salt to have negative affects.  

6.  Lastly, never give your pet bird dry or uncooked beans.  Dry or uncooked beans contain a poison called hemaglutin.  Hemaglutin is no longer a concern once the beans are cooked so if you wish to offer beans to your bird, cook them first. 

These are 6 food items that you need to avoid feeding your feathered friend.  Knowing and avoiding these and other damaging food items will help ensure they will live for a long time.  Pet birds can be very expensive.  Do not take a chance with your birds health by feeding it food that might be unsafe.  So what should you feed your pet bird to keep it fit and happy?  To play it safe, provide a good quality seed and pellet diet and supplement with approved fruits and vegetables if desired.  By doing this you will keep your bird healthy and happy.

Choosing The Right Pet Bird

Having a pet companion at home can certainly be rewarding.  Having pet birds can be both a rewarding and challenging experience.  Birds are intelligent and fascinating to look at.  But it is important to choose the right bird for you and at the same time prepare yourself for the responsibilities.  Birds when properly cared for can live for a long time.

Before getting yourself a feathered friend, there are some things you need to answer first

• Can you still care for a bird?  Birds are social creatures, they also need time.  So make sure that you or your family still have the time to care for a bird.

• Is your home and your neighbours okay with some bird noise?  Birds can be extremely noisy in several occasions. And can disrupt some neighbours.  But you can pick a smaller bird which can still make some noise inside the house but not disrupt the neighbourhood.

• Do you have other pets?  Some pets interact with each other easily posing no problems at all.  But also there are some pets who may harm the new pet due to jealousy.  Your pet bird can easily be killed by a jealous cat or dog.  These are some factors you would have to consider.

Giving some thought over these questions and still able to identify that you would still like to have a pet bird, then let’s go over to the selection process.   When choosing the right bird, make sure to do some research about the birds.  There are some birds which are overly demanding in terms of social and physical needs, these birds are better kept in the wild.  

Some good bird choices would be canaries, finches, cockatiels, parakeets, and lovebirds. These breeds of birds have long been bred in captivity and have already resulted into some domestic breeds.  The good thing about these birds is that the supplies they need can readily be purchased.  

On the other hand there are some birds which are better left alone in the wild, like some breeds of parrots, macaws, cockatoos, and toucans.  These birds have not undergone the breeding process that the domesticated birds have experienced.  These birds tend to be demanding to live with.

When choosing your pet bird, consider the following factors:

• Size – the rule is that the bigger the bird the bigger the responsibilities.  If you are just starting to be a bird owner,  then it would be best to start with a smaller up until to medium size.  The size of your bird will determine how big will the housing and other physical requirements.

• Nutrition- a bird fed accordingly can live up to fifty years!  It is important to provide the proper diet to your birds.   Bird not only feed on seeds, they also require fruits and vegetables and lots of water.  Bird seed are not enough for your bird.

• Housing -  let us apply the rule again, the larger the bird, the larger the cage it requires.  A proper cage should have the bars spaced closely enough, close enough so that bird heads would not get caught between bars and for small birds to escape the cage.  The cage should be spacious enough so that the bird can move freely and have enough exercise.

• Budget and finance – birds, as well as any other pet, can pose some financial obligations.  For birds, the cage, accessories, maintenance, food and veterinary care can be costly.  When looking for a bird, then you should make yourself familiar with the cost of raising one. You want to have a pet that you can afford.

• Time and maintenance- unlike to what other people think, birds are not really low-maintenance pets.  There are some pet birds which would require daily exercise and constant social interaction. Time and  maintenance would include feeding, cleaning the dishes and the cage. Some parrots show some behaviour problems if they do not receive regular attention from pet owners.

Effective USA Bird Control Strategies

Across the country, thousands of birds will often surround an area for months at a time. The noise, smell and contamination of parks, fields and structures can create a huge problem. Clean-up efforts can be costly, not to mention repairing the damage pest birds can create. Unlike some cities in Europe where birds are tolerated as part of the urban landscape, USA bird control strategies seek to limit bird invasions. In fact, many on this side of the pond have sought to enforce bird control using BB guns, poisons or other lethal culling methods. These methods are frowned upon by professional bird control experts who say that they only offer temporary relief. For the minute these measures are put aside, birds will start to return en masse to wreak havoc once again.

Experts in USA bird control insist there are much more effective bird deterrent measures one can use to keep pest birds away from parks and property. Some of these devices and methods are discussed below.

Visual Bird Deterrents

These bird scare deterrents include reflective foil banners, reflective strips and blow-up balloons that make pest birds feel threatened and uncomfortable. Strips and banners will crackle in the wind and sparkle in the sunlight, which makes birds feel very nervous. Balloons emblazoned with large predator eyes are intimidating as well, convincing pest birds that predators are lurking and just waiting to attack. These devices are widely used by USA bird control experts because they are easy to install on gazebos, overhangs, patios, eaves, and other open areas where birds often nest and roost.

Bird Spiders

Creating alarm and distraction with flagellating arms that whip around in the breeze is the Bird Spider. These devices come with various length spider arms to deter birds of different sizes. Spiders are easy to set up and virtually maintenance free. They can be used on tabletops, awnings, patio covers, and canvas boat covers--just about any flat surface where pest birds like to land.

Bird Spikes

The ubiquitous Bird Spike, while appearing lethal at first glance, is actually quite humane and surprisingly effective as a bird deterrent. Bird spikes simply won't allow pest birds to land anywhere near them, which is why they have been widely used on rooftops, awnings, gutters, girders, signs and ledges--the list goes on and on. The bird spike is one of the most effective devices used by USA bird control professionals. The spiked strips come with steel or rigid U.V.-resistant unbreakable polycarbonate spikes. You can also get the Mega Spike (with long 7-inch spikes) to deter big birds like gulls, cormorants, vultures and raptors. Finally, there's the Gutter Spike, which is specially designed to keep birds out of rain gutters.

Bird Slope

Once they land, even birds can't defy gravity. Which is what makes Bird Slopes so effective as a bird deterrent. The steep-angled PVC panels keep pest birds from getting a solid footing, so any attempt to land is an almost comic act of "squirrel cage" antics that eventually forces birds to give up and leave. The panels are easily installed on most any surface using screws or glue. Widely used as a USA bird control measure, the best bird slopes are made of UV- stabilized polycarbonate to last longer. Some panels even come in various colors to match the exterior color palette of their surroundings.

Bird Gels

This sticky goo bugs the heck out of birds. The reason is, Bird Gels tug at birds' feet with every step they take, making them feel really uneasy. Gels are easily applied with a standard caulking gun and when the goo sets, it never quite dries, leaving an icky, tacky surface that lasts for about six months. Ideal for flat or curved surfaces like parapet walls, conduit, pipes, ledges, and I-beams, Bird Gels are almost invisible as a bird deterrent.

Bird Netting

Often used to exclude pest birds from specific areas, Bird Netting is ideal for deterring pest birds from atriums, orchards, vineyards, warehouses, airport hangers and similar areas. Bird Netting comes in various mesh sizes--like 3/4-, 1-1/8- and 2-inch--to control specific bird sizes. Netting is harmless to birds and there are various types that are suitable for specific applications. There's agricultural netting to keep birds off fruit trees and crops, and heavy-duty netting to deny pest birds access to buildings and other structures. USA bird control experts advise getting Premium Bird Netting, which is U.V. stabilized, flame resistant and rot- and water-proof.

Electric Tracks

These devices impart a harmless, mild electric jolt to birds the second they land on them. Ideal for ledges, rooflines, parapet walls, I-beams, eaves and signs, Electric Tracks are easy to install on any flat or curved surface. They present an ideal deterrent for pigeons, sparrows, gulls, starlings and similar pest birds. One manufacturer makes a low-profile, electrical track system that it measures just 1/4-inch at its highest point, and comes in four colors--grey, stone, black and terracotta. It's almost invisible to anyone looking up from the ground. USA bird control experts prefer tracks that feature a flow-thru design to prevent water from damming up on rooftops.

Using the power of the sun to deter pest birds is quite the novel idea. Now it's more than a concept with the Solar Powered Bird Repeller. These clever devices have spinning arms that whip birds away and convince others that the area they protect is a no-fly zone. Bird Feeders, Bird Houses and Bird Baths, Oh My ? Attract More Birds To Your Backyard

Wild birds are wonderful specie to follow and learn about.  Bird watching is a growing hobby in the United States.  It is fairly easy to attract birds to your backyard using bird feeders, bird houses and bird baths.  When all three components combined, it will not take long to have your own wild bird sanctuary in your backyard.

Bird Feeders

Selecting bird feeders for your backyard may be overwhelming for newbies.  The truth is, selecting the bird feeder you want in your backyard can be as easy as one, two, three.  First, decide what kind of birds you want to attract.  Second, buy a bird feeder and bird food that will attract those birds.  Most bird feeders will attract a variety of birds, however, there are certain bird feeders specially designed to attract a particular bird.  For example, if you want to attract hummingbirds or orioles you'll need to buy bird feeders that are designed to store hummingbird nectar or fruit, jellies or sweet nectar for orioles.  The third part is the easiest and most enjoyable: find a place to put your bird feeder.  You can hang bird feeders from tree branches or place them on top of the rail of your deck.  Another popular way of displaying your bird feeders for wild birds is on a hook stand or bracket.  Hook stands can come as a single hook or others can hold as much as 4-8 bird feeders at one time. Wherever you place your bird feeders make sure you can see them and enjoy them.

Bird Houses

There are two popular types of bird houses: functional and decorative.  Functional bird houses may not be as pretty to look at but they are built for the sole purpose of housing birds.  Decorative bird houses, on the other hand, are mostly built for decoration.  These bird houses become popular collector items for gardeners and the like.  Then you have your functional decorative bird houses.  You will get the most out of your money with these types of bird houses.  If you can find a bird house that is built to both house birds and decorate your yard it's a win/win for everybody involved.  To keep bird houses safe from raccoons and cats, mount the bird houses atop metal poles.  If you want to put a bird house in a tree, hang it from a branch.   Make sure to keep bird houses away from any bird feeders.  Mealtime can make nesting birds nervous and scare them off.  Wherever you plan on putting your bird house try to face the entrance of the bird house away from any prevailing weather. You can also remove the perch if your bird house comes with one; they are unnecessary and house sparrows may sit on them to heckle birds inside the bird house.

Bird Baths

Bird baths hold water to let wild birds bathe and drink from.  You can find bird baths in all different shapes and sizes.  Just like any bird feeder, in order to maintain and help birds build a residency in your backyard it's important to keep the water in your bird bath clean.  Switch out the water and wipe the bowl out at least once a week.  This will not only help keep the water clean but will reduce the chance for mosquitos to breed in the water.  Bird baths are a fun and attractive garden feature for both wild birds and the gardener, however, it is hard to enjoy when you are swarmed with mosquitos.  Depending on where you live in the country mosquitos are all over bird baths like bees on honey so keep these tips in mind when choosing a place for your bird bath.

Bird feeders, bird houses, and bird baths make wonderful lawn ornaments, provide a substantial living environment for wild birds and make gardeners happy.  All three components are essential to any backyard in hopes to build a residency for wild birds year after year.  Just think what you go home to every night.  You have food, shelter and a place to clean up.  That is what you are providing for wild birds using bird feeders, bird houses, and bird baths.  These are very inviting features to wild birds, therefore, hard to pass up.
