Malawi Cichlid Diet?

Hello all, here is my scenario...
I have a 60 gl tank with 10 juvenile malawi cichlids. I understand that they are mainly hebivores, but is a diet of just spirulina sufficient enough. And a second part to that question, they don't seem very intersted to come to the surface to feed so i have been feeding them sinking pellets (HBH SUPER SOFT with SPIRULINA and Nutrafin Spirulina Algae Tablets) with a once a week treat of zucchini. I'm also finding it difficult to determine whether or not i am over feeding them because they don't seem to eat it in a 1 to 2 min time span due to the fact it's not a flake food that i can watch them eat at the surface. I basically split a tablet in half and drop them on each side of the tank and at their second meal, i feed them the HBH at a rate of one pellet per fish. Any suggestions or comments are greatly appreciated.

malawis like all sorts of food i feed three times a day.In the morning i feed spirulina algae flake.Late afternoon i feed either pellets or another flake food this feeding i change daily as the like a balaned mixed diet and at night i feed either prawns or squid rings these i buy from local food store from freezer and thaw out before feeding.Also feed garden worms,(washed first) flys ect.If they are not eating very well DONT feed for 24hrs let them get hungry then try the prawns this should stimulate them into eating.

What type of aquarium light is best for freshwater tanks?

I have recently been given a fifteen gal tak which measures 19 inches tall and 13 inches across. The hood on the tank was COMPLETELEY broken and in no condition for useage. All glass no longer makes hoods for this tank. So i decided to diy it. Got glass cut for the top and purchaced a 12 inch hood which fit perfectley once you factor in the switch on the side. However i cannot find a bulb which is A)powerful enough for my tank and b) provides my plants with the light they need to prosper. 12 inch hoods only come with the screw in bulbs, and i already checked home depot for an alternative. HELP!

Typically for a planted tank you are wanting 3-5 watts per gallon. Since you have a tall style tank I would shoot for the high end of this, so about 60 watts. That may take 2 hoods like you have or one high out put hood for florescent. Personally I would suggest you invest in a quality florescent hood if you want to be successful with plants. Lighting doesn't matter for the fish, but for plants it's one of the most important factors.

Most basic aquariums come with lighting already installed, but you can also buy lights if you want something different. For a novice the lighting in your aquarium should be sufficient if it's fluorescent, however, this only applies to freshwater tanks. If you plan on setting up a saltwater aquarium, better lighting is a must.

Fluorescent lighting keeps fish the healthiest because it most closely resembles natural light - and it makes your fish look better! Don't use candescent lighting in an aquarium, as it gives off a lot of heat and has a tendency to warm the water, possibly causing harm to your fish. Luckily, incandescent bulbs are easy to replace with fluorescent ones.

For fish only aquariums, use 3 watts of lighting for every gallon of water in the tank. This amount of light will control algae perfectly - anything stronger and you may notice green algae starting to form. Remember to change the lights once every 8 months to keep a consistent light level going.

For aquariums with plants, the lighting requirements are different. Unfortunately, many people make mistakes with lighting, causing their beautiful aquatic plants to wither and die in the span of a few weeks. But if you know what amount of lighting to use to keep plants alive, they will flourish, and stay vibrant and colorful. Install a tri-phosphor tube or full spectrum fluorescent bulb to supply the plants with the full spectrum of light they need to grow.

Although the lighting you employ depends on the type of plants you have in your aquarium, a full spectrum bulb that covers the red, blue, and green parts of the light spectrum should work for most setups.

A fluorescent bulb should do the trick for saltwater tanks containing only fish, but if you're going to add other elements to the mix, such as coral or live rocks, everything changes. This type of aquarium needs more light. If you plan to start with just fish, and then expand to add other features, purchase an aquarium with space for two tubes so you have room to add more lighting as your needs change. Corals require large amounts of light, between 5 and 8 watts.

Setting up an aquarium and keeping fish can be a lot of fun, and it makes a great hobby. As long as you research your lighting needs ahead of time and know exactly what your aquarium needs to keep the fish, plants, and other features alive and well, you'll be able to enjoy your aquarium for years to come.

Would a Classica 380 Internal Power Filter be ok to use in a 35litre aquarium?

I am looking to upgrade my internal filter to the next model. My current filter is for tanks with a capacity of 40 litres maximum and the next model, the 380, filters tanks up to 75 litres. My small aquarium is only 35 litres, would the fish struggle? Is this too poweful?

Stocking your freshwater tropical fish aquarium with live plants is a very good idea. This will give your tank a more natural look and an ever changing landscape as they grow. Live plants use the nitrates produced from left-over food, fish excrement, along with decaying plants and fish that have died and were not removed from the tank.

Deciding if you will be using real plants should be done before you lay down your gravel bed. The reason for this is you will be placing a layer of clay substrate material in your tank. Substrate is the area that the plants will acquire their nutrients from, just like regular plants get their nutrients from the soil. Before adding the gravel or accessories to the tank they need to be rinsed off. I usually rinse everything under the tap with cool or warm water. Soap or other cleaning agents are not needed and can add toxins to your tank if not totally removed. There are several choices for the substrate but one of the easiest is Flourite. Start by placing about 1/2" of gravel on the bottom of the tank and then add approximately 1" of Flourite, and then another 1/2" of gravel. A product like Flourite is a porous clay material that enhances the plants ability to use the nitrates in your freshwater tropical fish aquarium.

OK, now we can start adding any decorations you may want to use. Place them in the tank, visualizing where you will want your plants to be. Place a saucer or plate on the gravel bed and begin filling the tank by pouring the water onto the plate. This will keep the stream of water from disturbing the gravel and stirring up the gravel. You will want to fill about a third of your tank and then add your plants. When planting a stem plant, first cut an angled cut just above one of the healthy green nodes leaving as much of the plant as possible. Now gently push the plant about half depth of the gravel. Remember to space them out as overcrowding them will inhibit the lower leaves from getting enough light. Continue filling the tank and then remove the plate. Now that your tank is full, the next step is to get the water circulating and warmed up, and begin cycling your freshwater tropical fish aquarium. Replace the cover and light, than check to be sure that the heater and filter are plugged into the non-timed side of the power bar and the light on the timer side. Plug the power bar into a wall outlet and then set the timer for twelve to fourteen hours. This is the optimal time that a freshwater tropical fish aquarium should get light. Light is not a factor for the fish but it plays a big part in plant growth and the control of algae. Too little light and the plants will not grow or even die, but with too much light algae will grow out of control.

i have a 10 gal s wtr tank wth 5 gaL sump how do i eliminate micro bubbles coming from the sump?

1 p skimmer 1 1200 maxi jet thats in sump hooked to 1\4 in hose in main tank i have 1 maxie 400 for current and a catilina 900 for the return back to sump via 3\4in pvc and 3\4in hose +2 waliworld pumps in sump for filtration

put a divider in the sump that separates the sump into sections that the water will just over flow. have one side that water flows into (keep the skimmer on this side) and pump out of the other side. Keep the return pumps intake as close to the bottom as possible

The over flow will only allow bubbles at the surface to pass and your return won't get those

My fish tank light unit is not working?

My Juwel fish tank light unit has stopped working. I think it might have a bit of water in it. I have checked the plug and it is not the fuse, it might be the bulbs but i'm not sure.... Is there any way in cleaning the water out? Trying to avoid buying a new one! Help!

Your bulb is likely burnt out. Try getting a new one and seeing if that works, if not, your ballast unit may be fried (if there indeed was water in it).

Consistency of the water chemistry is also equally important, because you greatly risk stressing you fish when the water chemistry levels are always fluctuating, especially in the case of the water pH levels of your aquarium.

Aquarium setups need to kept that way

This means that you have to maintain the current elements that are present in your aquarium at maximum efficiency. To ensure that all of these elements are in prime working condition, diligence is required, because even if you know the dangers involved in the misuse of these elements, if you don't understand the grave consequences that you have to face, then you won't be capable of keeping the aquarium healthy.

There are actually many steps required to maintain a working fish tank with all of the fish (and plants, if there are) intact, and doing this at regular intervals can sometimes make even the most diligent person weary.
