Homeowners Association pro's and con's?

My fiance and I are looking for houses at a particular neighborhood. This neighborhood has HOA. The HOA include the use of the club house and private security patrolling area. Those two things are the only major benefits. The area have the best K-12 schools in the county. The HOA doesn't cover lawn maintenance, road maintenance, or some sort of insurance coverage. In addition, HOA does not allow residents to park cars on the street, no trailers or those portable basketball hoop on the driveway. It has a strict noise ordinance and others that we don't know about. Any violation is at least $50 with no warning.

With so many con's, I'm thinking we should start looking at other neighborhood. What do you think?

Look at other neighborhoods. The con's overweigh the pro's. With HOA, you have to ask permission to do any work on the exterior of your house. And if they don't like what you did, then they have the right to tell you to do it again or put it back to the original. Most HOA give you a warning before the fine. Ask your realtor for the details concerning guidelines.

Private security is a joke. I pay HOA due and I don't see the security patrolling my area. If you see a crime about to happen, call the police. As for parking, that's very strict. That means you can't have a lot of guests coming over and staying the night.
