Does a shock collar completely stop barking??? and what is so bad about putting a shock collar on a dog?
After 5 times wouldn't it just know not to bark anymore? I can't be around for him when I am at work all day and even when I'm home he has to be quiet because my neighbors will probably complain to my landlord.
There are two types of electronic collars. One is a bark collar that the dog wears to stop the dog from barking. That is automatically activated by the dog when the dog barks.
The second is a shock collar. That is a collar with a remote device that the owner controls.

Shock Collars
These are incredibly cruel and outdated devices which should never be used. Trying to control a dog barking through the use of pain is unacceptable. Unfortunately these electric shock collars are still sold as "humane" devices: but that is only because the person is unable to feel the pain the dog does. Please stay away from shock devices.
Ultrasonic Devices
The jury is still out on whether these cause any pain to dogs, cats and other animals. We are unable to hear the very high pitched sound coming from ultrasonic devices, and they are meant to halt barking in a dog. I don't often recommend these products, but the better quality ones are still a much better solution compared with shock collars.
Spray Collars
By far the most humane method or controlling excessive barking, citronella collars simply shoot out a short burst of citronella smelling liquid. Dog's generally don't like the smell and will stop barking. The collar should only be used to stop excessive barking, and not to control noise that is caused by lack of attention or other behavioural issues.
Anti bark citronella spray collars are the best product to buy if your dog's barking has got out of hand: for example if he barks all night, or at the neighbors.
You should try other methods of bark control before resorting to a spray collar, but if all else fails it is a wise and humane option.
