Rat Skin Problems?

I have a 3-4 year old adult rat , who lately has been scratching up its skin , and its getting so bad there are scabs on his body , especially near the neck and cheeks.

I was wondering what i could do to make those scabs heal and prevent him from scratching himself up like that.

I washed the rat in some room temp water and rubbed it down real good , and it seemed to like that and it cleaned up his fur really good.
Are there any like medications i could buy at like petco / petsmart to apply to the skin and make it not itch?

I've been looking around but at any of these petstores i dont see any rat or small animal things.

Any suggestions?

It's somewhat difficult to know what is causing your rat's irritated skin, it could be mites, fleas, an allergy to the bedding (even though it's biodegradable and environmentally friendly does not necessarily mean hypo allergenic), or even a food allergy. Medications, or even shampoos for rats are not easy to come by at chain stores, but you can find items online. For example, the Little River Pet shop sells the Earthbath Itch Relief Shampoo, I used it on a rat of mine who seemed to be allergic to a new bedding, she was scratching up a storm, causing bleeding, and she kept scratching even after we cleaned the cage, switched back to the old bedding, and bathed her. We used the Earthbath and she seemed better in a couple of days. It's not particularly expensive, only about $7 a bottle and well worth the money. http://www.pet-shop.net/html/ratgroom.html
