Choker Collar
can a dog wear a chain link choker collar all the time ?

i have a year old german Shepherd and have been looking 4 a collar as she used 2 wear one with her last owner but the only ones i like are the chain link chokers and was worried that it would be bad 4 her 2 wear it all the time

I was, for the longest time, a firm believer in not using a choke chain collar except for training, and even then I would rather use a pinch collar (the ones with prongs) to avoid hurting the dog's windpipe if we had a dog that pulled (I used to walk dogs locally).

Then I got my newest dog, who is an Aussi Cattle Dog. We tried nylon. We tried cotton. We tried flat leather. We tried rolled leather. We have 6 or 7 collars for this dog that just rubbed his neck raw. They WERE the correct size, but it just rubbed his fur off. We even tried various harnesses that sat in different places on his neck and nothing seemed to work.

So I went for the choke chain collar with the fabric threaded through it to keep it from making so much noise. It's on loose like it's supposed to be, and it has his tags on, and ta-da..it does NOT rub his neck raw and it's the only thing that won't.

While I recommend against it, it is possible. We don't have any low bushes or posts that he would be likely to get caught on, and we have new chain link fence. If I take him to the pastures, I change to a flat, bright orange nylon collar so he can run around. As soon as we get back in the car, he gets his regular chain collar on. I bought tags (and asked for spare rabies tags) for BOTH collars.

So he has his traveling collar and his normal chain collar. He only wears his nylon collar in the car and out in the pastures. Around the house and backyard, he's fine with his chain.

I WOULD NOT do it for aesthetic purposes, but if you must, you will be fine if you keep an eye on the dog and don't let her out on her own where she might get hung. If you're not sure, I'd look for something else if you could. And if you DO go for that, make sure to put the tags on and look into getting one with fabric woven through it, otherwise the jingling will drive you NUTS.

A lighted collar can be turned on and off, so that you can turn it on before a dog is let off the leash or is let out in the yard to play at night. The collar will let off a steady or blinking red or yellow light that lets you know where the dog is at in the yard.

Keep in mind that because of the light, this type of collar will almost always cost more than a traditional collar because it will come with a battery. As well, the battery will need to be replaced on a regular basis, depending on how often you use it. If you don’t want to bother with replacing the battery, you may opt for an easier reflective collar, although these will only give off light when a light is shined on them.

A variety of novelty dog collars are available for your pet in an endless variety. At specialty dog stores or ordered online, you can choose from sports team collars, luxury collars that have stones embedded in the material, and even handcrafted leather collars that come in a variety of different leather stained colors. Depending on the types of collars you find, you may also be able to purchase a matching leash, so that the leash and collar coordinate. Remember that because you are purchasing a specialty or novelty dog collar, you may be paying quite a bit more than you would for a basic one.

Electric Fence Collars

Electric fences are becoming a popular and less expensive way to keep your dog contained within your yard. Although electric fences are cheaper than the traditional wooden or wrought iron fence, they will still cost between a few hundred to a thousand dollars depending on the size of the yard. If your dog spends a substantial amount of time outside, this is a sound investment though. The electric dog collars that accompany the fence will remain around a dog’s neck whenever it is outside and will send off a slight shock if the dog goes outside the yard boundaries that are set in place.
