Have any of you ever bought clothes online from Baby Phat or some other clothing line?
I want to start a clothing line, but I don't know what I should ship the clothes in. What do those other clothing lines use to ship their clothes and apparel in? Do they use normal envelopes and boxes or do they ship in customized packages that carry their logo? Also, do they accept responsibility if items are lost during shipping?
I own a children's clothing store and typically, we ship clothing in a thick, plastic, opaque shipping envelope, you can get lots of good shipping stuff through www.uline.com .
If you ship via UPS or FedEx, there is an automatic insurance for items up to $100 and they offer tracking services. If you ship USPS, you can buy additional insurance, but they do not offer package tracking.
For my online customers, I take full responsibility for the item getting to them, as long as they have provided the correct shipping information and do not refuse the package. If UPS or Fedex loses the package, I can then track it, or file a claim with them for credit on damaged or lost packages. You can also use shipping services, like MailBoxes ets. who will take a percentage, but will follow up on the packages for you.
There is always a chance that you are going to lose money on lost or damaged items. There is always a chance, as well, that customers are not honest and take advantage-this is part of the risk that you assume as a retailer.
I don't sweat it. I just incorporate a certain amount of loss into my projected figures, as a regular cost of business-that way it isn't a whole emotional thing, when a customer files a claim.

As for branding your packaging-I wouldn't waste a lot of money on it. You can always use inserts to remind people of your product and brand name, well placed stickers are great, but most of the companies that i deal with, do not customize their packaging-it can be very expensive, especially when you don't know what kind of traffic you will be getting and where to focus your initial buying. once everything is roling, then you can effectively brand what is working for you.
