In training your dog is shock therapy more effective then citronella collar?
To train a stubborn dog, is it better to use a shock collar or a citronella collar (that sprays out and unusualy smell that the dog dislikes), what are the benefits of each and which one is more effective?
I used everthing out there for my dog... I broke down and got a Shock collar and it worked GREAT.. and the good news is I only used it for 2 weeks, Then the next 2 weeks I just had to pick it up so he could see it and lay it back down... So now I don't need it no more,,,
If you get one..
-the 1st couple of times Don't leave you dog alone.
-put it on 1/4 of the shock or less..
-And for Very Short times frames..

If you are stuck training an aggressive dog, you're task is obviously harder than usual. But don't worry-when you use the right techniques it can be done very quickly and surprisingly easily.
Before you know how to train effectively you have to understand WHY they act out in the way they do.
Don't worry-this isn't some lame "canine physiology" course... but you do need to know the cause if you want to tame them.
There are 2 different reasons for why they act aggressively. Here they are along with their corresponding solutions.
REASON #1) Dominance
Many dogs think their dominance is in question when new people come over. Therefore they act out to let them know who's boss.
Solution
The best course of action here is to show your authority over them. This doesn't mean be harsh... simply strict.
If the dog doesn't obey then simply put them to bed or give them a "timeout". When you do this enough times--and let them know that disobedience won't be tolerated--they will soon learn you are in charge. This is one of the most important tips for successfully training an aggressive dog.
REASON #2) Fear or anxiety
Canines HATE change. Therefore often times new people or a different environment triggers fear and anxiety in them.
Solution
You need to "socialize them" and get them out and about as often as possible. The more they get used to new people and places the less they will fear it.
But start as quickly as you can. It's harder for an older animal to adapt if they haven't experienced much change in their life.
But even if they are older--it's better lat then never. Just make an effort to keep them out and about when you have your friends over... and also take them to different places to get them used to new surroundings.
Finally--be PATIENT
It make take a short time but eventually they will get over their fear of change. These tips for training an aggressive dog do admittedly take a little while... but if you are diligent you will reap the rewards.
