my dog is limping x rays did not show anything?
My 5 month old yellow lab has been limping on his left front leg for 4 days. I've had him confined to a crate for the past few days because I don't want him to put pressure on his leg and cause more injury.
The vet took x-rays and he couldn't figure out what it was and he referred me to an orthopedic vet.
What could it be? He doesn't yelp in pain when I touch his leg and he puts weight on his foot when he walks but still limps. The vet did touch his shoulder and figured out that's where the pain was occuring.
This has happened frequently to our little 3-year-old rescued purebred dog in the 2 years we've had him, and just like your experience, x-rays etc can't pinpoint a problem.
Moderate exercise and massage -- and trying to prevent him from jumping off of couch or bed -- always helps him get over it. Until the next time it happens.
I'd suggest not crating/confining your dog for this (unless your vet recommends it). Especially since he's so young and has so much energy; he's much more likely to exacerbate the injury when he's let out of the crate and forgets to favor his leg/shoulder in the excitement of being released.
Young dogs have tremendous ability to quickly "rehab" themselves and regenerate their injured tendons/sprains, as long as they get quality food with scientifically-designed proper nutrients (Iams or Eukanuba or better) plus a little gentle exercise while they're rehabbing.
Chances are that, like our dog, he just has a weak/bad joint or tendon, that he'lll repeatedly injure. Not much you can do, other than ensure he gets good nutrition so his body can continue to heal itself when he's injured.
Bad breeding stinks!! We got our youngest "purebred" from a rescue after he'd been dumped at a shelter at 10 months old, so have no idea which BYB or puppy-mill produced him. If you got your dog directly from a breeder, you should either contact them for monetary reparations, or (better) try to get them shut down.
Our older "purebred" dog, we bought 12 years ago from a BYB when she was 12 weeks old. We didn't know back then about how stupid it is to buy from BYBs. Around 2 years of age, she started to exhibit signs of joint pain. We've spent thousands of dollars in joint-pain medications and supplements over the years, just to give her quality of life.
Your pup is just 5 months, so it's pretty troubling that he already is having issues. If I were you, I'd try to get reparations from the breeder....in the hope of shutting them down. They should never again produce or sell puppies.
