How can I tell if the ionizer on my air filter creates ozone?
I know not all ionizer air filters create ozone, and I have pets that I can't have near ozone. Other ions are fine. I just haven't been using the "Performance booster" for fear it creates ozone. I have Holmes HAP412N-U HEPA-Type Mini Tower Air Purifier.
Thanks!
That's a good question! HEPA filters generally do not rely on external power to ionize the air, and should produce no measurable ozone. Some electrostatic precipitators (and UV germicidal lamps that were used in smoke filters) do make ozone and possibly some nitrogen oxides, which not only damages textiles and rubber products, but even the lungs with extended use.
If there is a metal frame or pins with high voltage across it, it's suspect, but if it has an activated carbon filter afterwards, not much ozone should come through. If there is an on/off switch for the ionizer, just leave it off.
There are a number of ozone test kits, from a few dollars for one-time paper test strips (probably what you might use) to machines costing hundreds of dollars.

Ask any veterinary office if every pet they see is current on all of there vaccinations and you might actually get a laugh out of the staff. Getting your pet vaccinated is a simple process that takes only a few minutes, most vets can do them as walk-ins, and generally under $50. If you feel the cost is too much to spend for securing your pet's health, then please take a minute to read why your pet really does need them.
Canine vaccinations are designed to provide your pet with a level of resistance to some of the most deadly pet viruses and illnesses that your pet is at risk of contracting. The list of potential problems that are preventable with vaccinations include, rabies, parvovirus, Lyme, distemper and a host of other life-threatening diseases,
Dogs generally start their vaccinations at the age of about 6 weeks. In fact better breeders will not let you take an un-vaccinated dog home. From that point on it is up to you as the pet owner to make sure your pet receives updated vaccination shots or boosters on a regular basis. Many of these are either yearly or every three years. The booster dose for each vaccine needs to be given at appropriate time and this helps to build up the immune status to an appreciable manner.
Vaccinations for rabies, which is a fatal disease to both your dog and to humans, is given priority over all other vaccinations. To verify rabies vaccinations your vet will provide you a rabies tag to attach to your dog's collar.
Now that you know what canine vaccinations are for, let's see what could possibly happen to our pet if they did not receive them.
The canine distemper pathogen causes a very contagious disease in dogs known as distemper. Dogs who contract distemper suffer damage to their stomach, central nervous and respiratory systems. It's crucial to immunize against distemper as it is terminal and frequently lethal.
Puppies between the ages of 3 and half a year are most subject to the illness, though older dogs can also contract distemper. Canine Distemper Virus, or CDV, is broadcast through airborne viral particles that dogs breathe. Infected dogs also shed the pathogen through bodily secretions and excretions.
Because there's no treatment for distemper, treatment for the illness is supportive and a vet will try to treat the symptoms as best as possible. A clean, warm, and draft free environment should be made and maintained to guarantee the dog is as comfy as possible. Dogs afflicted by distemper must be given masses of liquids to help reduce fever and prevent dehydration. Other symptoms are treated as they appear if at all possible.
Like any viral illness, prevention is a miles better and more successful option than treatment and the best option is vaccination in the early weeks of life. In reality, dogs that die as a consequence of distemper basically die from central twitchy complications due to the illness or from secondary bacterial infections.
Protect your dog from getting sick by knowing what dog illness symptoms they are at risk for.
