Is there any pet insurance available that will cover congenital conditions?
My dog is healthy (1.5 years old) but he is a labrador retreiver and I am worrying that he might develop a congenital condition in the future. I don't want to pay monthy for insurance if they won't cover him if say- he was diagnosed with hip dysplasia or something of the sort. Does anyone know of anywhere that covers a dog no matter what breed or what that breed is prone to developing?

First, let me say that I work for Embrace Pet Insurance in Cleveland (Ohio).
You are lucky to have a Lab, they are great dogs and great with kids. You are right in that they can be at higher risk of certain diseases, many of them hereditary, than their mixed breed companions. Young Labs are also incredibly boisterous and get into lots of trouble eating things like dental floss and other crazy stuff.
There are some pet insurance plans that specifically exclude congenital and hereditary problems such as hip dysplasia. VPI, Petshealth, and the AKC plan are among those that do not cover anything that might be deemed hereditary.
There are some plans that have no exclusions on hereditary diseases provided your dog or cat has not exhibited symptoms. i.e. As long as it is not pre-existing.
Among the companies that cover congenital and hereditary diseases are Embrace Pet Insurance, Petplan, and Pet Care.
One thing I encourage you to do is to visit your veterinarian for a clean bill of health. Typically pet insurance companies will request your pet's health history when you make your first claim and this can lead to unpleasant discoveries about undeclared conditions. Be upfront about whether your vet has mentioned anything about whether your Lab is susceptible to hip dysplasia.
But if your Lab receives a clean bill of health on the hip dysplasia front and is otherwise healthy, you should receive solid coverage with no exclusions and you can rest easy knowing that your Lab is fully covered.
