What other pets can I get that are similar to a dog? [meaning a leash-pet, etc]?

I wanted a dog, but my landlords said no. They said anything other then a dog [?]. So I want a pet that I can come home to [not in a cage] that I can walk and play with; as I would with a dog. Please help me. I'll take any suggestions. Thank you.
well i had 2 cats and my father just pasted away. so my mom got me another cat and we didnt know it had a disease, so it died and also killed my other 2 cats. and the virus [that is only affected by cats] stays in my house for anothher 13 months..meaning i cant get another cat.
