why do pet stores get dogs from puppy mills?
why can't they just buy from a breeder?
they are cheap, and they can mark up the price, and therefore make a profit...which is the name of the game!

Staffordshire Bull Terriers, often confused with other breeds and thought to be overly aggressive are actually normally very friendly with people. They make great pet dogs if trained and cared for properly. Staffordshire Bull Terriers are the tanks of the dog world. They have tremendous strength for their size, energy levels far in excess of many dogs and an innate desire to dominate any other dog.
A well-trained Staffordshire Bull Terrier will not cause any problems. On the contrary, they make first-class family dogs, full of fun and amusing in their normal behavior. If you are considering owning a Staffie, here are some pointers on how to get the best out of them.
- Buy from a reputable source, and seek references from other satisfied buyers if necessary. A good breeder will provide you with a healthy and well-adjusted puppy to work and play with.
- Train your Staffordshire puppy from young. This will minimize the chance of bad habits setting in, and with this breed bad habits could be time-consuming and costly to correct later.
- Socialize the puppy in as many varied ways as possible once his initial vaccinations are completed. He will take very well to children but always supervise any interaction. Teach him the appropriate reactions to visitors. Above all, socialize him with other dogs, but always on a leash.
- Focus on the basics for the first training steps, consistently, repeatedly, patiently and persistently. Play to his energetic capabilities and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier's love of food rewards without over-indulging. Simple, short commands, short training sessions, affection and non-aggressive reprimands work completely in a structured form.
- Make sure the basics are understood and responded to by your dog before moving on to opportunities for him to demonstrate his aptitude for the fun stuff. It is important to make sure he does as instructed when he gets out into the world.
- Leash training will be important and it is unlikely that a normal lead will deliver the appropriate control on its own. Use a chest halter and a strong leash. This gives the best control, communicates less nervousness through tugging and is more comfortable for the dog.
- Exercise and lots of it will be welcomed by the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. A long walk and the opportunity to run freely very day is the ideal, but short of this, daily exercise is required.
- Use a general daily routine with your Staffie. It does not have to be rigid, but a general form of routine from young helps train him and also keeps him calm and familiar with everyday activities.
- Be alert when out with your dog. Being the athletic, trim dog that they are, the physical signs of pricked ears, suddenly walking very upright and other signs are clear and mean something has aroused his interest. Often this will be another dog and if trained properly you will be able to stop anything developing.
- Health-wise, Staffordshire Bull Terriers are robust. Particular areas that need a little more attention than normal with a Staffie are worm treatments, nails and teeth.
These ten pointers will help make your relationship with a Staffordshire Bull Terrier all the more enjoyable, with much less stress for you and your dog.
