The heat pump water heater is a special system which uses electricity to power a condenser that extracts heat from the air pumps into water. It can be used for heating swimming pools, and has a much lower operating cost than a gas-based pool heater.

After some years, thanks to the lower operating costs, the heat pump becomes the less expensive option.

So if you consider that you're going to have your pool filled many years, and you will be heating it all the time, you can see why a heat pump water heater is a less expensive option in the long game. However, in the colder times of year, it might not provide enough heat, as it is only able to recycle the heat that is already in the air.
