By now, nearly every parent with an internet connection has heard of the sad video that came out on YouTube.com in November 2006, urging all parents of toddlers to keep their kids in a car seat with a 5-point harness as opposed to graduating them to booster seat attached with a regular seat belt.

The video was an emotional succession of photos with interspersed screens of text and music playing throughout. For those who missed it, message contained in the video started with:

I'd like you to meet my son Kyle.

There is something that could have prevented Kyle's death though...

The full transcript is too long to fit in this article. You can find the rest of the transcript including the reference to the Britax Regent car seat here. The short of it is that according to Kyle's mother, the Britax Regent car seat could have saved the child's life.

This heart wrenching video brings up an important issue: Should parents follow the advice in the video and if so, is the Britax Regent the only car seat on the market that will hold children up to 80lbs?

On one hand, it is undeniable that a child properly harnessed by a 5-point harness in a properly installed and tethered car seat will be more protected than a child properly buckled-up in a booster seat. But of course, even the Britax Regent isn't guaranteed to keep your child safe in the event of an accident. It obviously depends on the conditions of the accident.

On the other hand, does that mean that we should start putting teenagers and even adults in car seats? Of course not. So the decision is basically similar for a young child who is old enough to be in a booster seat: It's a matter of comfort and convenience versus maximum safety. What makes the Regent a compelling solution is precisely that it is designed to be comfortable and convenient for an older child.

If you are leaning toward moving your child into a Britax Regent, be aware that it's been in high demand since the video came out and it's often back ordered. Fortunately, there is one other car seat that will accommodate children up to 80lbs: the Radian 80 made by Sunshine Kids.

Unfortunately attempting to purchase either car seat models often feels like chasing a prized newly released game console: we recommend you at least place an order with a reputable online retailer so you can keep a place in the line. They typically serve their customers on a first come first serve basis.

So a question remains: what should you do to keep your little ones safe while you wait for your Britax Regent or Sunshine Kids Radian 80 to arrive?

If you still have your old convertible car seat handy, you might want to dust it off and put it back in service as it might still be a viable option for the months to come or until your child reaches the weight limit: Some high-quality convertible car seats such as the Britax Marathon, Decathlon and Boulevard car seats will hold children up to 65lbs, which is the usual weight of 6 to 8 year old child anyway (but may obviously not be quite as comfortable as the Regent at that age).

If your child has clearly outgrown his convertible car seat and you're using a booster seat today, make sure you have a good booster seat and that you're taking all the precautions possible with it.

In the eyes of some small pet hobbyists, rabbits and guinea pigs are the Sonny and Cher of the animal world. Both of these fuzzy, adorable animals have many of the same desirable qualities, and lead similar lifestyles. With similar diets of hay and veggies, general temperaments, and ownership requirements, it may seem only natural to place rabbits and guinea pigs together. However, there are some serious factors to consider before you attempt this interspecies adventure.

The most obvious consideration is the behavior of the animals toward each other. Most people who decry the practice of guinea pig-rabbit pairings do so because of the fear that one will badly injure the other. This fear is not unfounded. Rabbits are larger than guinea pigs, and have tremendously strong rear legs relative to their overall mass. A rabbit who kicks a guinea pig- whether intentionally, or as a by-blow from a leap or binky- will likely cause broken bones or worse. Rabbits are territorial, dominance-driven animals, and there is no certainty they will bond with any given animal. By purchasing a rabbit and guinea pig together, without giving them the chance to bond first, you put both animals' lives in danger.

However, this is actually the less risky factor. The vagaries of rabbit psychology notwithstanding, many people have great success in bonding rabbits and guinea pigs. In fact, the guinea pig is sufficiently un-rabbitlike so as to have a lesser chance of stimulating dominance behavior that might become dangerous. In fact, some animal shelters have observed intense bonding between rabbits and guinea pigs, to the point that one becomes depressed when separated from the other. On the whole, although rabbits can certainly maim or kill guinea pigs, this can be circumvented through bonding prior to cohabitation.

The more pressing concern is one of diet. Although rabbits and guineas share most of the same nutritional needs- alfalfa pellets, hay, and fresh vegetables- there is one major difference. Guineas, unlike rabbits, are unable to internally synthesize Vitamin C. They must receive a plentiful supply of it in their food, or otherwise fall victim to scurvy, as did the sailors of old. Rabbits, on the other hand, don't need extra Vitamin C, and in fact are at risk of overdose if they receive too much of it. This means that feeding both animals the proper diet for either puts the other at risk for serious health problems.

Experts and hobbyists disagree on the viability of workarounds for this problem. Some simply feed one or the other diet, and report success. One of the animals is likely not at optimal health, even if there is no apparent problem. Other owners feed a half-and-half mix of rabbit food to guinea food. This is in some ways the worst option- neither animal is receiving an optimal diet. Still, these owners claim to successfully raise healthy animals. The last option is to feed a standard rabbit diet to both animals, and then hand-feed the guinea supplemental materials to provide the Vitamin C it needs. This is likely to be laborious and uncertain, as you will have no guarantee that the guinea won't simply fill up on rabbit food and disregard its orange.

In conclusion, the short answer to the question of whether rabbits and guineas may be kept together is "No". A more accurate answer would be "Maybe", but in any case you are taking a risk with the health and well-being of both animals in doing so. It is up to the individual owner to make an ethical decision, taking into consideration their own expertise and the degree to which they are willing to risk the health of their pets. Law will depend on where you live. Yes, there is a big difference. From a safety standpoint, at least 4 years old AND at least 40 pounds. However, most 4 year olds are not quite ready for a booster seat. To determine if you child is ready, you need to answer Yes to all of the following about when your child sits in the booster:
At least 4 years old
At least 40 lbs
Lap belt lays on the lap, not up on the abdomen
Shoulder belt goes over the shoulder and not into the neck
Child's knees bend at the edge of the booster seat
Child knows to never, ever place the shoulder belt behind their back or under their arm
Child can sit upright and still the entire ride (No twisting around or reaching for stuff)
Child does not generally fall asleep in the car (some older kids still sleep in a booster and as long as they can remain in position this is okay. But for a child that still frequently falls asleep, a 5 point harness is safest)

A child who has recently outgrown their child restraint seat should not go straight to a regular seat and seatbelt. Seatbelts are not designed for an child who weighs 80 pounds and will not provide the type of protection that a child needs to stay restrained. A booster seat that meets federal safety standards is necessary to help the child make the transition from a child's car seat to the regular car seat.

Unfortunately, most of the 20 million children in the U.S. who should be in a booster seat in the car are not. While the worst-case scenario is for a child to be in an automobile unrestrained, having the wrong restraint can also pose a serious risk.

A child wearing a poorly-fitted adult safety belt can sustain serious, life-threatening injuries, including being ejected from a vehicle during a crash. Using just a seat belt, kids are 3.5 time more likely to suffer significant injury, and four times more likely to suffer a head injury. An adult-sized seat belt alone is 60 percent less effective than a booster seat.

A lap belt can ride up on the stomach and the neck and face can be covered by the shoulder belt on a small child passenger. Children are not only safer, but can see better and are more comfortable in a booster seat that allows the safety belt to fit and function as intended. A booster seat accomplishes this by lifting the child so that they are tall enough that the shoulder and lap belt fit appropriately. A lap belt should sit low on the body, be across the top of the thighs and not cover the stomach. The shoulder belt should come across the middle of the chest and collarbone or shoulder. This helps protect the internal organs, spine and head from injury in the event of a car crash.

Does Your Child Need a Booster Seat?

How do you know if your child needs to be in a booster seat? Children who have outgrown a child safety seat should ride in a booster seat until they are at least eight years old, or four feet, nine inches tall. Generally, kids from four to eight years old, and from 40 to 80 pounds, need to be in a booster seat. A child who is smaller than average may need to sit in a booster seat until they are ten years old or older.

Indicators that a booster seat is needed include an inability to sit all the way back against the seat back; an inability to bend the knees comfortably at the edge of the seat; a safety belt that does not cross the child's shoulder between the neck and arm; a lap belt that does not sit low across the abdomen, touching the hips and thighs; and an inability for the child to be comfortable and stay seated like this for the entire trip.

Are Booster Seats Really Safe?

Many parents and caregivers incorrectly believe that booster seats may not be safe. Concerns include that booster seats are loose fitting and unstable that might not adequately restrain a child in a crash, but these are unfounded.

Children should stay in their car safety seat as long as possible before moving to a booster seat. Once your child reaches the upper weight or height allowed for your seat, as listed on the label and instruction manual for the seat), or his/her ears have reached the top of the seat, it's time to move to the booster seat.

Booster seats, used in the back seat, are held in place by the seatbelt, and used with the lap and shoulder belts, just as an adult uses them. They are not tethered to the car like a child car seat. High-back and backless booster seats are available, and should be used until your child can correctly fit in lap and shoulder seat belts. Never use a booster seat with just a lap belt, as serious injury may result.

If you wet the bed and have no underwear would you use a diaper or wrap up in a towel?

I'm a sick beastly man who pees.

I would use a diaper or something similar, but if you use a towel or cloth diaper, then you need some sort of waterproof pants to put over it to keep the wetness from spreading from the towel to the sheets.

Look at it this way, you are going to be wet either way. The difference is that if you are wearing a diaper of some sort then the wetness will stay warm because of your body heat. If you don't wear something and then wet the bed, it spreads out and gets cold and you wake up wet and cold from your pee. Not only that but it will ruin your matress unless you have some kind of plastic or rubber sheet under your regular sheet to protect it.

My vote is to use a diaper.

When my baby was first born I'm not sure who needed the constant contact more, me or her. I never wanted to put her down, and the more I read about it, the more I agreed that it is natural to hold your baby near you. Many cultures do it, and baby wearing is becoming more and more popular in our own.

I actually received one of the back-pack style baby carriers at my shower, and had intentions of using it, but I had a few issues with it. I didn't like the way it felt like my baby was falling away from me, I wasn't comfortable with the way it seemed to cut off circulation to her legs, and the straps were very uncomfortable!

I bought the Maya Wrap Lightly Padded Sling for myself and was very happy with my purchase. I liked that it held my baby closer to me, and that it can be worn in a variety of different positions. It is safe to use for up to 35 pounds, so you will probably tire of wearing your baby before your sling does. It's also got shoulder padding for comfort.

I love that the fabric is hand-loomed and the colors and patterns are so beautiful. It is just so much more feminine than those ugly back-pack slings. It's also machine washable so spitting up and diaper accidents are no problem. I recommend having an extra on hand for when one is in the washing machine because once you use the sling you will be hooked.

I breastfed for 12 months, so I used mine as a nursing cover when my daughter got bigger, but when she was an infant I was able to nurse her comfortably right in it. I liked the break from the sore arms and and lower back I would get when always holding the baby on one side, and not having to bring the stroller into stores with me was enough of a reason in itself.

There are three available sizes. Small is for 5'2" or less and slender. Medium is for 5'2" to 5'9" and is the most common size because it is so easily adjusted to fit. Large is for 5'9" and above. It has a built-in pocket for your keys, or even a diaper to free up your hands for more important things. The Maya Wrap Lightly Padded Sling comes in so many colors, you'll probably have a hard time making a decision. I loved using mine, and recommend them to all of my friends.
