The clean water they use is very important for their feathers. Some of them prefer taking a bath under the shower with us, others – to be splashed with water (for example with sprinkler for bedewing flowers) or to be placed under the stream of water in the sink. Often they also prefer taking a bath in a bowl filled with water. You should try each of these methods until you find the preferred way of your parrot for taking a bath.

7. Parrots like to destroy things. – In their natural environment they spend 90% of their day searching for and consuming food. Living in our homes they receive their food without making any effort which results in some need inside them to “rediscover” and fulfil their time, which normally they spend in searching for food. If you don’t provide them regularly with different bird toys they could start to use your furniture for that purpose. Parrot toys are made specially to be ruined. If the toy cannot be destroyed in that point, there is possibility the bird might not be interested in it. It’s recommended to replace the toy with a different one periodically, to avoid the parrot to get bored.

8. The parrots bite. – Sometimes they bite the hand that feeds them and the people they are familiarized with. This is not like a dog’s bite. It’s true, they bite in some cases because of aggression but more often it is a result of fear or anger. Sometimes as a part of their daily communication, they “bite” each other and expect their natural behaviour to be tolerated by us. By biting they say simply: “I don’t like that” and this way of their expression is so effective. People often are not that honest and convicting and tend to be resentful, when someone else or even a bird is more honest in its attitude than us.

9. The parrots are not appropriate pets for kids. – They are not good choice for kid’s pets because of their incredible intellect. They live long and require daily attention and contact with their “human flock”. A kid goes through a lot of changes and phases of his/her style of living (school, marriage, building a family, moving etc.) which makes it almost impossible to keep a life-long relationship with such an intelligent creature as a pet.

How do I keep my cat from jumping up by the bird cage?

I have a problem with my cat jumping up by the bird cage and scaring the bird to death! It does not matter where I put the bird cage, the cat finds away to get up to it. I scare the cat away from it, spray water at it, put it in a pet carrier, swat the cat even, nothing seems to work! I ran out of things to try! "PLEASE HELP ME FIND AWAY!"

I have had cat and bird combos many times in my life and so I know how frustrating it can be. I had my bird high up, I kid you not up 8 feet up on top of my china cabinet and my cat did a full volt up and hung on to it knocking both of them to the ground!! My bird ended up with a tumor and I wonder if that had anything to do with it. I got a bird cage that is cat proof cant be knocked over and cant be opened, its by a company not sure if they are still in business but its a wooden cage and on a wood stand its a great cage, search ebay or yard sales for something like that, My cats actually slept on the top and ended up being Buddy's with my birds.. I have had the same cage for over 17 years.. amazing still is in top shape, worth the money! GOOD LUCK

The thought process should go like this: do you want to spend all your money now to spend on a cage that you can possibly use forever or spend on a cage that you will replace every several years.

For most bird owners, the budget issue made many people to choose wrought iron instead. However, for those who chose stainless steel were very happy customers. They did not have to deal with rusting or buying any new bird cages for a very long time. If you can actually afford it, sometimes it is probably better to go with stainless. Think of it as an investment. It is almost like buying a house. If you look to own a bird and raise it for another 20 to 30 years, getting stainless will make the cost of cage per year much lower than if you were to stick with wrought iron.

Cage Bird Cages

You don't mention how small the cage is - and that could mean different things to different people.

I would NOT house a red belly OR a senegal (they are two different species) in anything smaller than 20" x 20" x 24" tall for any amount of time. And, I hope the bar spacing of your permanent wrought iron cage is no more than 1" apart, otherwise the your bird could attempt to squeeze through and wind up getting stuck.

What really concerns me though is the fact that your question makes me feel you are not super knowledgable about parrots in general and I wonder WHY the breeder would allow you to bring home an UN-weaned baby bird! The weaning process and proper socialization is not that simple. The other thing that doesn't sound good to me is the breeder telling you that the bird may not know how to climb down from the top of its cage. Climbing is part of the learning process in a bird and if it does get to the top (I assume you mean hanging upside down from the underside of the top of a cage) nothing too terrible could really happen other than it continues hanging until you come to rescue it! Yes, it could fall, but not likely. Birds are not stupid and are usually quite courageous. In 20 years or owning and breeding birds, I've NEVER found a baby bird in that predicament. I have found them with legs or wings caught between too small of bar spacing though so your bar spacing is indeed an important consideration for any cage, temporary or permanent.

I think you would do well to do some additional book reading or internet research before you bring your new baby home because just asking this one question is not the only thing you are going to need to know for giving your bird the best possible care and I'm not sure that the breeder is giving you all the correct knowledge either.

Is there a paint I can use on a rusted parrot cage that is safe for bird?

I live in the tropics and shipping a cage here is expensive.
Can I paint the one I have? My parrot does use the cage to climb around on so it has to be safe in case he gets it off.

You cannot simply paint over rust. It will come right back! Even if you sanded every bar, the rust would still come back! The only paints which can go over rust, such a Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer, would be harmful to your bird.

If you want to have a parrot, you must be willing to spend the money needed to take care of your bird. If you cannot afford an adequate cage, then you cannot afford the bird.

I suggest that you either find a way to get him a good cage, or you arrange for someone else to take him who can give him what he needs. Think of what the bird needs.

can a cockateil baby once weened be put in the same cage as an adult parakeet?

i know some one had a simalar question, to mine but if the cockatiel is introduced as a baby to adult parakeets would they get along? i am hand feeding a cockateil baby and it will be a matter of weeks before it is weened. i have layed it in the bottom of the parakeets cage and they just look at it but dont do any thing to it.

There is a very slim cage that everything would work out fine, but i wouldn't recommend it at all.
They may have ignored it as they might not have perceived it as a threat, but if you put it in there permanently (as in longer than 1/2 an hour or so), the parakeets, who have no doubt been in the cage for some time, will likely see the cockatiel as an intruder into their territory and attack it. They may not do this straight away, but there is a very good chance they will whether you see it happen or not!
If you had a large (as in quite big!) spare cage, that the parakeets had never been in, you MAY be able to put them all in there together right from the word go, because it would be no-ones territory.
But I still wouldn't recommend it!
If you had a proper aviary that was at least say 10ft long, then there should'nt be too many problems as there is enough space for everyone, and room for a persecuted bird to escape.
But in any situation like this, the most important thing is to PAY ATTENTION and WATCH, WATCH, WATCH! Just because no one has a go at anyone else in the first half an hour of being together doesn't mean that there won't be any fighting.
I think your best bet is to put your new little guy in a cage by himself, set up near your parakeets cage, as he will still benefit from having other birds to 'talk to', even with his seperate quarters.

Well I bought my cage that fits 2 parakeets for just 10$ and I went to petco and saw that same cage for 70$.In pet shops they usually sell cages for more price because the item might be better quality or they just want to make people pay more.I bought my cage at the swapmeet and the cage seems to be fine my bird stays in that cage for over 3 years now.But if you do buy one at swap meet or wherever make sure you wash.

How big should my parakeet cage be for 2 birds?

I have 2 parakeets and i want to know how big i need the cage to be and what kind of toys/food to get them and if i should let them out of there cage for a little. My house is big so should i put them in a small room? Thanks!

For all cages always, the bigger the better! If there is room for them to fly, it's great. Always when you have multiple birds they need to have room to get away from each other as well as plentiful water and food in case one picks on the other and keeps them from the food dishes. As for toys - try to go for naturally made toys. From pet stores get the ones from Planet Pleasures that are purely organic parts. Parakeets love to chew so the ones that allow them to do so are best and make sure you change up their toys often (bi-weekly and at least monthly) so they don't get bored, even if they haven't gone through that particular toy yet.

Organic pellets are best and are not sold at petshops. There are two brands I know of;

And it's good for birds to get true exercise. Letting your parakeets out is a great idea so they can really strech and fly around. Recall flight is best, so trianing them to come back to you on cue. You can do so through target training;

Just make sure no fans are on, windows open, etc. or else they will die outside on their own and a fan is a dangerous thing for them to attempt to land on.

There are many different methods of dealing with bird problems. It is necessary before implementing any form of bird control to survey and access the problem and decide on the action applicable.

Feral Pigeon The feral pigeon is found throughout the whole of the UK. Feral pigeons are descended from rock doves which explains why they are often found nesting on building ledges, building structures, under ledges and on girders.

They make they nests from grasses and twigs, but in urban areas, it can also contain rubbish such as pieces of plastic etc.

Feral pigeons breed all year round. The brood consisting of two off-white eggs. Incubation tends to last around 18 days and hitched chicks tend to leave the nest after 30 days.

Feral pigeons tend to scavenge for food, and in urban areas they are encouraged by the public feeding them.

Pigeons are approximately 300-350 mm and weigh between 275 and 550 grams.

Control

Bird spiking is the most common way of dealing with pigeon problems as it prevents the bird from landing. The spikes are typically a plastic base (which you can snap to shorten) onto which stainless steel upright spikes are attached.

The spikes are available in several different lengths or configurations, which ensures that there is a system for each different type of job.

There are three different types of bird spiking, the P14, P20 and the P32. The number represents the number of spikes per strip. The heavier the infestation, the more spikes required.

To help pest specialists knowing what level of treatment is required for bird pest problem, Network Bird have devised practical guidelines based on the 'pressure' that the bird exerts on a given area.

High Pressure

A high pressure area is one where birds are using the space for night roosting and nest building. Birds will be exceptionally determined to return to these areas, and a heavy duty point system will be require.

Medium Pressure

A medium pressure area is one where bird uses the area for daytime perching only. An area near regular food sources or one with shelter. Spikes will be very effective, but birds will try to re-enter the site and may overcome lightweight systems.

Light Pressure

A light pressure area in one where the bird occasionally lands and sits during the day, A light pressure area is the easiest to proof against and any anti-perching system will suffice.

With the high and medium pressure areas, if the birds are unable to gain access, they will find the next, nearest favoured site. If this is on the same building as you are proofing, it is highly recommended that you proof the whole building.

Spike systems are very simple to install and are really suited for smaller sections of protection. Ideal for ledges, and girders. If applied correctly, they are near invisible to see off ground level.

How can I turn a steel garage or bird cage into a Faraday cage?

Can a steel garage and bird cage be a foundation for a Faraday cage soldering or gluing the rest of the wiring?
Can the current get through the door or window in a steel garage?
I meant if the door or window isn't there or open. Like how close must the gap between the metal be to prevent current or electrons (not sure how to say it) from getting through?

A microwave oven should be good. Put your cell phone inside and check signal level. Don't turn it on if you like your phone.

There is a relationship between the mesh size and the bandwidth you may need to pay attention to. Most bird cages have rather long vertical slots. Most garages don't have a lot of ground connections to the doors so you might get some non-uniform performance though out the garage.

Maybe never, so you should always supervise. Birds are very territorial. I wouldn't dare leave my Cockatoo, loving as she is alone with my macaws,. One good bit and she'd be dead. I also had an amazon. He and my conure were best of friends, so it is possible. . But I wouldn't dare leave them unsupervised, untill you're sure. Birds are very territorilal. They need their own space, room, whatever. I wouldn't dare let my lovebirds fly into the macaws cage, although they loved to, just to steal their newspapers and shred them for nesting material. Tiny as they are, the macaws still see them as invading their territory and will bite, not realizing they will kill them.. But it is possible they will become friends as my Amazon and conure were. But please supervise them first to make sure. And make sure they both get equal love and attention from you so there's no jealousy. Parrots are like little kids in that respect. They are extremely jealous and possessive of their owner. As long as your Amazon feels that it's number one, it should work out okay.

If a pet bird breathes through its open mouth, you know it's sick. Buy a bird antibiotic at the pet store, pulverize it, and add it to your bird's drinking water. If this doesn't help, get it to the vet right away.

Not really. You just need to cover majority of the cage. The cage just needs to be dark enough for the budgie to sleep it.

If you cover the whole cage completely, it would be difficult for the budgie to see and it would be very humid.

Largest bird cages for the least amount of money?

I am going to be getting a quaker parrot in a couple months. I want the cheapest cage I can find that is over 18x18. I'm looking for a cage that is around 32x24. Where can I find huge cages for cheap??

There are lots of cage suppliers in the uk. Get the largest cage you can for the money you have...that's whats best for the bird. Larger the better..you'll have a very happy bird then! If you go 2nd hand DONT get one with any rust on. Its fatal to any birds.

Its worth joining the parrot society though, becasue also in their monthly mags there are for sale and wanted ads; you may find a parrot in there, rather than going thru the pet shop trade.

(I cannot understand even the likes of the Parrot Society to be honest, saying that for instance a Conga Grey only needs a cage that is 24" cube... Ridiculous in my eyes.Im afraid. My CAG grey has a cage thats big enough for three macaws, and he is out most of the time too and has the complete run of the whole house - - THIS equals one happy bird.)
