There are two popular types of bird houses: functional and decorative.  Functional bird houses may not be as pretty to look at but they are built for the sole purpose of housing birds.  Decorative bird houses, on the other hand, are mostly built for decoration.  These bird houses become popular collector items for gardeners and the like.  Then you have your functional decorative bird houses.  You will get the most out of your money with these types of bird houses.  If you can find a bird house that is built to both house birds and decorate your yard it's a win/win for everybody involved.  To keep bird houses safe from raccoons and cats, mount the bird houses atop metal poles.  If you want to put a bird house in a tree, hang it from a branch.   Make sure to keep bird houses away from any bird feeders.  Mealtime can make nesting birds nervous and scare them off.  Wherever you plan on putting your bird house try to face the entrance of the bird house away from any prevailing weather. You can also remove the perch if your bird house comes with one; they are unnecessary and house sparrows may sit on them to heckle birds inside the bird house.

Bird Baths

Bird baths hold water to let wild birds bathe and drink from.  You can find bird baths in all different shapes and sizes.  Just like any bird feeder, in order to maintain and help birds build a residency in your backyard it's important to keep the water in your bird bath clean.  Switch out the water and wipe the bowl out at least once a week.  This will not only help keep the water clean but will reduce the chance for mosquitos to breed in the water.  Bird baths are a fun and attractive garden feature for both wild birds and the gardener, however, it is hard to enjoy when you are swarmed with mosquitos.  Depending on where you live in the country mosquitos are all over bird baths like bees on honey so keep these tips in mind when choosing a place for your bird bath.

Help Identifying A Songbird?

At my feeder ah, less than a week ago. I got lazy and didn't check my book right away. But I can't find it, and it had some pretty distinctive features. The head had a black "cap" and also a black streak under the beak. I can't remember the beak color, possibly was black also. Then had white on each side of the head, I believe including where it's eyes were. The body color I believe was a blueish gray color, nothing to distinctive that I recall. It came to my perch feeder twice and flittered away to my lilac bushes each time after taking a seed (black oil sunflower), which I thought was strange. I think it was the same bird anyways. Was a pretty bird. About the same size as a finch or slightly smaller.
I am in south central Wisconsin, and this was mid to late afternoon.

Sounds like a black-capped chickadee, which are certainly common to your area. Usually the body is kind of a light-tan color, but it could certainly appear to be a light-grayish color, like in this photo:

Sometimes the best thing about having bird feeders in your garden is sharing those moments of bird watching with your children. It is a wonderful opportunity to teach them about the wildlife that flies past your window as well as a nice time to spend sharing something beautiful with your kids. If this is something you want to do perhaps you also would like to make some of the bird feeders with them. Depending on the age of your kids this can be another sharing and learning opportunity. One of the feeders you could make is the finch bird feeders. They are a little more complicated than making the simpler platform feeders which are very simple, but not so hard that you could not construct one.

Since finches are such tiny birds what is used as a finch bird feeder is often a tube bird feeder. The first thing to do is to find all the materials that will be needed. Start with a narrow plastic tube. This can be something that was used as a medicine bottle, spice jar or soda pop bottle. Then you will need something to use as perches. The best thing to use for this will be doweling. Doweling are round pieces of wood. You will want them to be no wider than a quarter of an inch. This allows the birds to grab onto them easier. How long they are is completely dependent on the width of the tube you are using. On average each piece of dowel should be around six inches long. This measurement allows the perches to be a few inches long for the birds to sit on. It the tube you use is very wide you will need longer pieces of doweling. You will also need a small hook which has a screw at one end, a hot glue gun or strong glue, paint, using non toxic is a must and a drill with a few bits so there are ones that are big enough for the multiple purposes you will need them for.

Take the drill and make holes for the dowel to go into. Leave them longer on one side so the bird has a place to sit on the perch then glue them in place. Depending on how big the tube is you can make at least six perches by alternating them on all the sides. Use the screw hook to attach the top of the feeder to your tree. If you want to make it more attractive for your garden you can paint it. This is the simplest way to build finch bird feeders. You can do this with your children, having each of them build one to put outside their bedroom windows, so that they too can they watching the birds feed.

I think my piggies might get bored, they have food, hay, chew house, toilet paper tubes, and 2 shoe boxes. I have 2 girl piggies, they run around a lot and eat a lot!!!!!!!!, but I was wondering why they eat all the toys I give them. In the morning, have the child thread a piece of yarn through the hardened bread and help them tie it in a tree. This will become a new feeding location.

Cut the top off an egg carton. Help your child poke holes in the four corners and tie strings through them. Now bring the strings together, in the middle to form a hanging support for the bird feeder. Hang it in a tree, sprinkle bird seed in the lid and watch the birds come to eat.

Build a Bird Feeder from a Soda Bottle

Once you have finished all the soda in one of those two liter, plastic bottles, why not give the bottle a new life? Wash it out and let it dry. Poke a hole on one side of the bottom of the bottle and push a dowel through the hole. Use a pen to mark where it touches the other side. Now poke a hole there, and push the dowel through, so you have a perch on each side of the soda bottle. You need to create two openings just above the perches where the birds will be able to perch on the dowel and pull a little seed or other snack out. Fill the bottle with seed, tie a wire or rope tightly under the lid of the soda bottle, re-cap and hang.

To some of us, there's nothing more pleasant than to see our backyards populated by birds. They're beautiful creatures and they make our garden come alive with their perpetual motion and ongoing dynamic activities.

If you want to attract birds to your garden and keep them coming back, bird feeders are one of the best ways to go about it.

If you are a beginner birder, finding the "right" birdhouse can be a challenge because there are thousands of bird houses available in the marketplace. However, if you're just starting out, a hopper feeder is probably your best choice. They're one of the most versatile feeders around.

Hopper feeders come in many styles but the main characteristic that they have in common is they are easy to fill. To fill a hopper feeder you simply open the top and pour the seed or millet. Hopper feeders come in various sizes, but even the smaller sizes are able to hold quite a bit of seed. The larger the feeder, the fewer trips you'll have to make to refill it. Another nice feature of hopper feeders is that the well make ones can be easily taken apart for cleaning.

A common and constant problem with bird feeders is that they are very attractive to squirrels. Squirrels will often raid bird feeders as an easy source of food. Unfortunately for squirrels and other critters, however, bird feeder manufacturers are finally getting up to speed. You can now find hopper feeders with built-in squirrel defenses to keep squirrels at bay.

Another advantage of hopper feeders is their size. Many feeders have small feeding platforms that are too dainty or precarious for larger birds. This gives you the possibility of having many different bird species sharing your garden space.

On the other hand, if you're afraid of the feeder being taken over by larger birds you may decide that you don't want larger birds in your garden. In that case, one nice feature you should look for in a hopper feeder is weight sensitive perches. This lets you calibrate the feeder so that only birds of the size you desire will can the feeder.

Avoid buying a hopper feeder made out of plastic or cheap wood. Plastic feeders have a tendency to discolor, especially when exposed to the bright sun all day. They also tend to cloud up and become "grungy looking" over time. A well made wood feeder can be a beautiful addition to your yard and last for years. Feeders made of cheap wood will likely crack or split and need replacing within a couple of year.

A hopper feeder is one of the simplest and maintenance free feeders you can buy. The only simpler type of feeder is the platform feeder which, while inexpensive, leaves the bird seeds totally exposed to the weather and other critters.

Where to place your feeder? A hopper feeder can be placed almost anywhere in your garden. You can hang it from a tree in your yard or you can fix it on a pole. If you have multiple trees, you can hang your hopper feeder from a wire stretched between them. Wherever you place it, you can count on your bird feeder giving you many years of enjoyment.

How long does it take for pelleted bird food to go bad?

I'm considering getting a 20lb bag of bird food for a single parakeet. How long will it take for the food to spoil? Will that be too much?

It depends upon the brand of pellets. I believe TOPS (Totally Organic Pellets) has a shelf life of a year. Harrison's has a shelf life of somewhere around 60 days. It often depends upon what is used as a preservative. Usually there is an expiration date on the pellet package.

I think you'll find twenty pounds of pellets is an awful lot for a budgie. You may save a bit of money but you may also waste money if you wind up throwing half of the food away. Also, don't forget you have to store it somewhere

what can feeder fish eat? I do not have any fish food at this time and I want to feed the fish before they die?

I was thinking to crumble a saltine cracker or ritz cracker to feed my feeder fish until I can get to the store tomorrow. My daughter won the fish at the county fair..that is why I have the fish and no food.

Yellow jacket (or yellow-jacket) is the usual name in North America for predatory wasps of the genus Vespula and Dolichovespula. Members of these species are better-known simply as "wasps" in other English-speaking countries. Most of them are black and yellow; some are black and white (such as the bald-faced hornet, Dolichovespula maculata), while others may have the abdomen background color red instead of black.

They can be identified by their characteristic markings, small size (similar to the size of a honey bee). They exist in colonies and have a characteristic rapid side-to-side flight pattern prior to landing. Yellow-jackets are often mistakenly called "bees." All their females are capable of stinging. Yellow jackets are important predators of pest insects, though they can be pests themselves as well.

II. Yellow Jackets as Pests

Eliminating yellow jackets can be time-consuming and excruciating. Yellow jacket (of the Vespula genus) are possibly the only wasp that can be considered pestiferous if you take its belligerent colony size and defensive nature into account.

This aggression on the part of the yellow jacket genus is most evident towards the end of the summer when the colony starts to crumble and workers find more sugars and sweets to nourish themselves and what's left of their young. Not only does the yellow jacket wasp's demeanor change toward the end of the warm season, but the size of a colony can also be imposingly astronomical if left unobstructed.

For the most part, wasps are predators and rarely scavengers, and this, by and large, applies to yellow jackets as well, but there are particular species within the Vespula genus that tend to salvage more aggressively than others.

Vespula Vulgaris, for example, is one of these scavenging species, and because of their scavenging behavior, they tend to come into contact with humans on a more regular basis than wasps that hunt live prey.

III. Basic Yellow Jacket Control

* Sometimes getting rid of yellow jackets or reducing yellow jacket populations is as easy as keeping your garbage cans properly sealed. Your garbage bins are a windfall not only for stray dogs, stray cats, and the occasional raccoon, but also for yellow jacket wasps, which will feed on the leftover proteins and sugars you tend to throw out with the trash.

Scraps of meat and fish are particularly pleasing to a yellow jacket's appetite, as well as old bottles of pop, bottles of syrup, and fruit.

* One way to get rid of yellow jackets is to keep pet food and other sources of refined proteins indoors. Yellow jackets, like other wasps, really do enjoy protein, and nothing is packed with more accessible proteins than pet food floating around in a water dish.

Keep your dog or cat's food bowl inside during the warmer months, or find a way to protect the pet food from foraging pests like yellow jackets and other scavenging wasps.

* Pop cans, humming bird feeders, and other sweets should not be left out, or should be sealed in such a way as to prevent yellow jackets from gaining access to the sugar. Studies done on yellow jackets show that populations with access to large amounts of refined sugars build incredibly large colonies much faster than colonies whose access to food is restricted to their natural diet of nectar and live prey.

* Make sure awnings and siding is properly sealed to get rid of yellow jackets. Preventing yellow jackets from gaining entrance to the voids in the siding and roofing of your home is highly recommended because hidden wasp nests are particularly difficult to get rid of and may require the services of a pest control professional.

If you can't stand having wasps living behind your walls, having a professional remove them for you is going to be like having a root canal on your wallet. If you're patient, cold weather will eventually kill the colony, and then you can seal the entrance without driving wasps into your home.

* Mechanical, non-toxic traps are a good way to get rid of yellow jackets - or at least reduce the local population to a less noticeable level. There are a couple of theories surrounding the right timing of yellow jacket and wasp traps, but most experts agree that traps should be put out during the earlier months of the warm season.

If traps are set before yellow jacket queens begin their search for proper nesting grounds, it's possible to spare your community one more yellow jacket colony by killing that one queen. Otherwise, traps set during the first few weeks of summer should keep yellow jacket populations at a manageable level during the peak season.

IV. Natural and Organic Yellow Jacket Control

The do-it-yourself wasp trap is perhaps one of the most effective traps your money doesn't need to buy. All you'll need is an empty 2-liter bottle, scissors, and some sugar water or fruit juice.

* Cut the cone off about 1/3 of the way down from the top of the bottle, flip it over, and staple it into place so that it looks like a minnow trap. Then, fill the bottle with fruit juice concentrate or sugar water with a little soap, and hang it from an awning or in your garden if you prefer.

* Pouring boiling water or just soapy water into the entrance of a yellow jacket nest is one way of killing yellow jackets and rendering their nest uninhabitable. Of course, this particular tactic should be done during the late evening, and measures should be taken to cover the skin in case the colony is feeling particularly bloodthirsty that evening.

*If you're going to use soap water, why not do it with some organic dish soap like the kind Seventh Generation makes? Sure, you'll still be the Tamerlane of the wasp world, but at least you'll be remembered as the environmentally-friendly murderer of wasps.
