Can you make bird toys with hemp rope?

I want to make my own toys for my pet birds. They will shred this, so I want to make sure that hemp derived rope is not harmful to birds.

There is no problem with using hemp rope as long as there are no binding chemicals or plastics on it.

Wooden blocks for toddlers are a good thing to mix in there too.

They use a vegetable based dye so they are non toxic. You just need a drill or some galvanized eye bolts (tiny ones).

I would suggest either an Indian Ringneck, or an African grey. African greys are one of the most common birds in the world. They are loved by people all over the world and are great pets. They are a medium sized parrot.

On the other hand, and indian Ringneck is also a good pet, and is also very common. They always keep you busy!

The African Grey is a large parrot renown for its intelligence and ability to imitate and, some believe, understand the human language. If you choose a Grey as a pet you will be following in royal footsteps as King Henry VIII of England owned one, but you will also be making a lifetime commitment as most have life spans that range between 50 and 65 years. Considering the following information as you make your choice will help you decide if this is the bird for you, and if so, will result in a happier relationship between you and your Grey.

Social Needs This is a bird that needs a fair amount of social interaction to stay healthy emotionally and mentally. It should be placed in an active part of your home so that it can observe all that goes on. It also needs to be allowed out of the cage for at least an hour each day and given one on one human interaction. Introducing a variety of people will keep them from being wary of strangers and will allow them to bond with those other than the main caregiver.

Toys and Housing Because they are so intelligent, they need to be in a stimulating environment that includes a variety of toys that are rotated frequently, toys that they can tear apart without injury, and toys that contain food or treats that they must work to remove. They need a large cage that is at least 4 feet long by 3 feet deep and 3 feet high with a solid back, or that is placed against a wall to provide a feeling of security. They should also have perches in the room that they can use when they are out of the cage. Allowing your parrot to spend time out of the cage insures a happier and healthier bird-both physically and mentally.

Life Stages If you are planning to acquire an African Grey as a baby parrot, know that they have a fairly long maturation cycle which spans approximately 10 years. It is important that during these first 10 years obedience training is a regular part of your daily routine. This can prevent your Grey from becoming destructive and aggressive with humans and other pets upon maturity.

Food Diet should consist of pellets, a minimum of seeds, and daily offerings of fresh fruits and vegetables (organic is best). Avoid chocolate, avocado, garlic and onions, rhubarb, caffeine, alcohol as they are toxic to your bird. Birds are lactose intolerant, so since they are unable to digest dairy products they have no nutritional value and should be avoided. If you have questions about your Grey's diet, consult an avian veterinarian before giving any food that you are unsure about.

Maintenance African Greys are considered a dusty bird because they produce a fine white powder that goes airborne when they shake or ruffle their feathers. This will require bathing your bird more often, and cleaning the cage more often that a less dusty bird. Using an air purifier near the cage will greatly eliminate this dust.

How do I get my bird to like me?

I have a parakeet. Ive had it for about 2 or 3 years now and it absolutely hates me. My dog killed his companion and now he sits by himself in his cage. We bought it loads of toys and let it fly around sometimes but its so scared of us and bites us if we try to pick it up. Ive had plenty of parakeets in the past but none with such an attitude. help?

Buy a treat, keep it on your hand and once it comes on and is not looking cause its too caught up in the treat stroke it very gently! But if it is too timid it may never come on Best of luck!

For those of you who own a sun conure or have recently purchased a baby parrot, I'm sure you will agree that they are lovely birds to have as pets. Although a sun conure can become quite feisty and loud at times, they are still beautiful parrots to keep in the house and uplift your day. A sun conure always looks like it is smiling at you. There is magic in their eyes and expressions and they give you a sense of warmth and love. They are cute, cuddly and lovable plus they will be open to your touch and warm embrace most of the time. And with some hard work and dedication you can actually teach a sun conure to talk and perform tricks. Below I will cover some of the basic strategies for teaching your bird to perform sun conure tricks and how to train conures to talk.

Praise your Conure:

The first thing you have to learn about teaching sun conure tricks is that parrots will only associate progress with praise. Your bird may perform a really cool trick or do something cute and funny that you will want it to repeat on cue, but it will never know that it was appreciated unless you show it praise. A common form of praise is to smile and speak the words; 'good bird' or 'good boy /girl' with an uptone sound in your voice. Follow the praise with a treat. Sun conures love treats especially if they are only fed to them sparingly. Your parrot will associate the act they just did followed by the praise and reward they got and they will remember this for next time.

Do Not Over Train:

The second thing you have to understand about teaching sun conure tricks is that you cannot over work your bird. Forcing your parrot to repeat words or perform tricks can make him or her frustrated and exhausted. A solid 10 to 15 minutes of training a day is all that is required for your parrot to slowly learn how to perform sun conure tricks. Some days they may not respond well to the training and you have to be aware of this. In that case, limit the training to 5 minutes and do not harass them again until the next day. Do not forget to show praise and give them treats.

Never Scream at your Parrot:

Finally, when teaching sun conures to talk, you want to make sure to never scream at the bird. Never raise your voice to the point where you sound angry. This will only cause your conure to associate anger with your command and it will be afraid of performing for you for fear that you will become upset. Be patient and kind with your conure and gently repeat simple words that they could learn to speak such as; 'hello', 'goodbye', 'i love you', etc. Keep the words or phrases to a minimum and use an uptone or singing tone to them. Birds associate tones with phrases and will remember them better than if you were to repeat them sounding flat, monotone or dull.

Training sun conures to talk is a well sought out skill and can be quite challenging at first. Many parrot owners give up trying to teach them tricks because they lack the patience or experience to deal with this type of parrot. However, it is not impossible to teach a sun conure to talk and you too can learn the skills necessary to turn your pet into a show bird. Make sure the cage isn't to high. If he falls he won't have far to go. Some people put a towel on the bottom of the cage or something like white pine shavings and a towel or paper towels over that. Rope perches may help as they are easy to grab. Or sisal perches. It is nice that you are willing to do this for him. I would too!

Friends call you a hermit because you stay in your apartment so much. You have a computer programming business you run from home. You can't be out and about much, or your business would go under. And you do like the idea of helping an animal in need. But you want to give your parrot a good home. You want to do right by the parrot, and not give him or her a hard time like the previous owners did. And the first thing you need to decide on is a bird cage.

Finding the right bird cage is important because that is going be your bird's house. Look for the biggest cage you can afford and that will fit well in your apartment. Birds are happier when they have some room to fly around in their cage. Looking for a metal bird cage is important because that is the easiest to clean. Ideas For Fun Bird Toys And Snacks?

I have a cockatiel who is just over 1 now..... shes really sweet and likes to play but loves to attack her toys so they have to be replaced once they ware out but they are expensive....... You have finally made a decision to purchase a parrot as a pet.  We don't blame you, parrots are fun loving, affectionate birds and some will even speak.  Now you have made that decision, you may be surprised to find out that there are 330 different types of parrots to choice from.  Here are some of the most common parrot species African Grey, Amazons, Cockatiels, Cockatoos, Macaws and Parakeets.

The Macaws are the largest of the parrot species.  They possess very powerful beaks that are capable of crushing nuts and damaging furniture.  They are quite active and require a huge space.  Though quite chatty and can learn to speak, these may not be the best match for someone with small children.

The parakeet is a term that covers a wide variety of parrots.  They are general small in nature, mainly green and will spend a majority of the time on the floor of the cage. They are very quite birds but like to be very active. They are also very independent in nature and have a hard time bonding with their owners.  Though can be trained in many areas, do not mimic speech very well.

Why is my conure salivating and shaking his head when he touches this parrot toy?

It's so crazy, I have made a lot of homemade parrot toys, and he likes all of them except one, it's a baby teether on a ring made of hard plastic (safe for babies, so I figure safe for birds) with beads attached- it's got a lot of red, I'm thinking maybe he doesn't like red. He ignores it, but the two times he has touched it, he shakes and bobs his head and SPITS, yes- he spits saliva, what the heck?? Is it just his silly reaction, or could it be dangerous? I don't know.

Birds don't have saliva. Your bird thinks the toy could be a possible mate and is trying to feed it. Perfectly normal.

Summer time is a time to get outside. But being outside doesn't have to just be swimming and barbecues. Here are some great outdoor project ideas that dads and kids will really enjoy. They involve things that move, learning about the world, or building things. There is something suitable for every kind of dad.

Making Things that Go!

Model Rockets - This is a relatively inexpensive hobby and you can usually get a complete start up set for around thirty five dollars. The hobby is composed of spending a few hours making rockets out of cardboard and plastic tubes then taking them outside and launching them. Kits are readily available that have everything needed and the dual aspects of making something then firing it off will appeal to every type of dad and every type of child.

Kites - If something less involved (and less expensive) is desired kite making and flying is a great alternative. There are plenty of websites that will show you how to make a kit from scratch. Or you can spend a few dollars and purchase one. Once it is assembled it will provide many hours of outdoor fun - until it gets stuck in a tree!

Remote Control Toys - A more complex build and use project would be something in the remote control genre. Just about everything imaginable is now available as a remote control project. You can build boats, airplanes, helicopters, or cars and then race them on the lake, driveway, or airways in the neighborhood. This pursuit has some flexibility in that you can purchase the items completely assembled and ready to use or you can buy kits and plans that will give you many hours of fun just building them before you actually use them.

If you want to pull out all the stops you might want to consider making a go-kart. It could be either motorized or not. Now this would be a project that is remembered for life.

Learning and Science Projects

Summer time is a great time to get outdoors but how often do we think about getting outside at night? Astronomy and telescopes are an often overlooked pursuit that is quite rewarding. And you really don't need a telescope. A pair of binoculars and a star chart will be more than sufficient. If you are looking for something spectacular to watch in the night sky you might want to plan your adventure around August twelfth. This is the peak night for the Perseid meteor showers which will often come down at a rate of 90 per hour.

Nature Walks that are something more

We are all familiar with the concept of a nature walk but you can take it to another level by picking a specific theme and making your own guide as you take your walk. You make a guide by creating a book out of your experience. You can take notes, draw pictures and collect items for your book. Think of it as something like Darwin did on his adventures. Here are some specific subjects you could focus on during your nature walk:

• Rocks and Minerals - Bring a field manual with you and look for various types of mineral and rock formations. Chip off samples for your collection.
• Bird watching - You can draw pictures of birds or even record their sounds
• Archaeology - Maybe there are some old sites not far from where you live that you could dig.
• Animal Watching - Even in cities you will be surprised by the wildlife you find. Make notes of what types of animals you see and where you see them.
• Cartography - Make maps of parks and walking paths much like a modern day Lewis and Clark
• Treasure Hunting - Panning for gold is a fun adventure even if you don't find any
• Eco Systems - You can get a field manual and visit a particular type of eco system like a beach, wetland, forest, marsh or desert.
• Eco Awareness projects - You can use a nature walk as a means of raising environmental issues. Volunteering with a local clean up group is also a great idea.

Building Things

What Dad doesn't like to build things? Here are some ideas ranging from easy to spectacular. Some easy indoor/outdoor projects include bird houses, bat houses, and whirligigs. Something a little more challenging might be a lemonade stand, small greenhouse, or a small windmill. If you are looking for something spectacular you might want to think about building a fort, dollhouse or tree house! What Dad, or kid, wouldn't love a tree house!

Summertime is the time to get outdoors and it is also a great time for dads and kids to do things together. These ideas are ways to turn an average Sunday of sitting around the barbecue into something extraordinary and memorable.

We have a one and a half year old female cockatiel called Jaz and i would love it if she could talk! Does any one have any tips on how we could teach her to do this?

Jin Info gave you a very long answer. I will make this answer short. I have had the best luck going with sounds first. A bird is more likely to mimic a sound than words at first. Anything that you think your bird would find fun will work. Birds love noises. Later you can work on words. Sounds like bells, whistles, boinks, etc. will get your bird off to a nice start. Also try the sounds in different pitches, birds love that.

How can i make home made bird toys for my parrotlet?

Your parrot cage when first bought is a fairly basic, functional and boring piece of furniture. Not just to you but also to your bird. Parrots are lively intelligent creatures who enjoy variety in their lives and living in a spartan cage will bore your parrot just as it would you. So what can you do about it?

Well here are 6 tips you can use to brighten up your parrot's environment and make it more pleasing for him, or her!

• Hang small branches up in his cage for him to chew on.
• Weave colored paper through the bars of his cage. Your parrot will not doubt rip it all to shreds but will absolutely love doing it.
• Put an egg box or a couple of toilet rolls in the cage and watch him go ballistic with delight as he chomps them up.
• Give your parrot a pine cone to chew on. They love getting their teeth, or should I say beak, into things.
• Put some rope toys in his cage, like ladders, perches and swings. Use different thicknesses of rope. Remember parrots like variety just like you and I do. Don't overdo the toy thing though. A few consumable toys changed frequently, so they remain interesting to your parrot, is much better than too many toys cluttering the cage up. Put a mirror and a bell in. Parrots love them. My parrot enjoys having the weight of the bell resting on his head. Yes, I know, some parrots do daft things but that is why they are so loveable.
• Don't just confine your efforts to the inside of the cage either. Set up a play area for your parrot outside the cage or even on top of the cage. Put a perch and some toys in the play area to keep your parrot interested and occupied when he is out of his cage.

If you do all of this for your parrot, not only will you have a happy bird but you won't have to worry about any of the consequences of your parrot being bored, like plucking his feathers, biting and screaming.

I just bought a toy for my cat. My dog is jealous. Any suggestions ?

The toy is a chickadee that makes chirping sounds like a real bird. The cats love it. It's small and they can bat it around easily. The trouble is that my toy poodle is jealous and wants the toy but it would last about five minutes with her because stuffed toys, especially small ones go fast around her once she finds how they make their sounds and I'm afraid the electronic parts would hurt her if she got hold of them.

Dogs tend to think they own everything and have to have everything someone else has-which is why we love them right? I would try getting a stuffed Boda toy from the pet store for her or make a toy with a old pair of socks. I have a pit mix and a great dane that can destroy a happy stuffed animal in about 30 seconds flat so I started making stuffed sock toys for them. I'll take newspaper or anything I have that will make any kind of noise when they crunch on it-that's what they want the toys for anyway. They are intrigued by the noises the toys make and they will tear them up to find out what it is. It's actually good for them because it keeps their minds active and constantly trying to analyze. You can also try getting her a stuffable toy which will also keep her mind busy.

Go to rummage sales and get them. Many are more then sturdy enough for parrots. Our African Grey's love them. Baby rattles, wooden blocks, they like to play with them all.

We pick them up for a quarter each. You can find them at most garage/rummage sales!

Caique Parrots are delightful little parrots with lively personalities that make them wonderful pet birds. Here are 5 tips for caring for your bird so that it can live a long and healthy life with you and your family.

 

Food-Since Caiques are known for their love of food, starting with this tip seems very appropriate. They need fresh fruits and vegetables, sprouted seeds, some table food, and a high quality pellet mix as supplement. Change water as often as needed for it to be fresh. This will cut down on mold growth and infections that can result from ingesting mold. When feeding fresh food be sure to remove the food from the cage after several hours for the same reason.

 

Cage-Even though small, they are quite active and do best when they can move freely in the cage. Bigger is always better when it comes to the size of the cage, but a minimum size should be 24'" high by 24" wide by 24" deep. Since they are avid climbers, horizontal bars will be greatly appreciated by your bird. Avoid metals that are toxic to birds, and make sure your cage is certified as bird safe. Wood cages should also be avoided as they love to chew, and you would soon find your bird had escaped by chewing through the bars of a wooden cage. Sizing the cage properly keeps your pet happy, and can prevent undesirable behaviors from developing due to boredom. A happy Caique will provide unsolicited entertainment from morning to night, and all you have to do is have time to watch the show.

 

Interaction-These little parrots love people and need people to love them back. They can benefit from at least an hour a day of interaction with humans. They should be closely supervised as they are fearless little birds and can easily get into things they shouldn't. Go slowly and supervised carefully when introducing other pets.  Never leave a child alone and unsupervised with the bird. Small children may unintentionally frighten, or make the bird feel threatened, and you can easily prevent disaster by being there when your Caique is exercising outside the cage.

 

Training-Caiques respond well to training. Most can learn to speak, do tricks, and whistle songs. And once these skills have been perfected they are more than willing to take center stage and perform for you, family, and friends. Training sessions should be short and daily if possible. Always reward your bird and end before your bird's attention span wanes. Remember that training is not only to teach your bird something new, but is a great way to continue to bond with your Caique. Make it a time that your bird looks forward to.

 

Preserving their Health-With proper care these parrots have been known to live for as long as 30 years. Like many parrots they are susceptible to airborne disease and infections such as Psittacosis and other respiratory illnesses unless their air is kept clean. Since birds in captivity are subjected to much more dander, feather particles, and other pollutants found in many households, filtering their air will keep their airways clearer, keep them healthier, and ultimately increase their life span.

Right! The cuttlebone is so standard I forgot to add it!
And I meant newspaper by saying litter.
For beak conditioning, nail clipping, etc. I take my birds in for "spa days" to get everything done. And I just use a blanket for a cage cover.

You should have a mineral block or a cuttlebone.

Use newspaper instead of litter. Litter can be ingested and cause blockages in the crop or intestines. It also promotes molds and bacterial growth. Also poop should be monitered frequently which is almost impossible with litter. Also if the litter has odor to it like cedar FORGET it.

How about a cage cover?

I keep cornstarch or flour in a small jar to pack a broken blood feather or nail in case of bleeding. You might want a good book on parrots with first aid tips in it

What can I use to dye cotton rope for bird toys?
