The Ragdoll Cat - Get to know the breed

Rag doll cats first originated in 1960's from a non pedigree cat in the US.  Ann Baker had a kitten from this cats litter and decided because of their affection nature and beauty they were worthy of their own breed and created the Rag Doll breed.  Ann also created her own cat registery – the International Ragdoll Cat Association and trademarked the name Rag Doll.

In 1981 the first breeding pair was exported to the UK, they were 6 month old kittens belonging to Lulu Rowley owner of the Petil-lu Cattery.  While still in quarantine a litter was born on the 26th July.  Lulu and her friend Pat imported another 8 rag doll cats help expand their breeding base. Rag dolls are floppy and docile in nature hence the name, however modern breeder are attempting to breed out the docile trait as they feel it might not be in the best interests of the cat.  They are famous for their temperament, are extremely laid back and devote their lives to their owners. There were once believed to feel no pain because of their nature, but tests have shown that they feel the same amount of pain as other cat breeds. They like lots of attention, and will constantly be with you whether that's in bed or on the loo.  Rag dolls have be called children that never want to grow up and will make a toy out of anything.

Like the Maine Coon they are a large breed of cat.  Rag Doll cats come in just 6 colours seal, chocolate, flame, blue, lilac and cream.  The chocolate and lilac colours are harder to acquire.  There are a number of pattern variations and these include: pointed, mitted and bicolour.  The pointed pattern is characterised by a single darker colour at the extremities, such as the nose, ears, paws and tail. The mitted pattern is similar to the pointed with a few extra feature, which are a line of white that runs from their chin, down their belly to their genitals, they must have white paws and chin. The Bicolour pattern differs from the previous two, with white legs and a inverted v shape patten on the face.  They will have a white belly and occasionally white patches on their back.

Their fur is long and while not prone to matting they should be groomed at least twice a week, neglecting to groom with eventually lead to tangles and mattes.

Over at Cat Party you'll find more information on the different cat breeds such as Maine Coon and Perisan.  You'll also be able to read lots of information on how to care for your cat such as dealing with FIV

When you are ready to get a dog, you'll find that there are many breeds available to you. Whether you go to a breeder or you are curious about the background of some of the lovely dogs you can find at a shelter, you'll discover that being aware of the different groups of dogs might help you make your pick.

If you are someone who is looking for a dog that will require lots of regular exercise and who has a great deal of natural energy and exuberance, consider sporting dogs. Sporting dogs are very active and alert and do require a fairly constant schedule of activity. Some examples include Cocker Spaniels and Golden Retrievers.

Dogs from the hound group were bred for hunting, whether they hunt with their eyes and with their nose. Like sporting dogs, they do require regular and fairly intense exercise, but they are also quite diverse. Make sure that you know if you are getting a breed that bays, because the sound is quite loud. Beagles and Norwegian Elkhounds are a part of this group.

Working dogs, on the other hand, have been bred to perform certain specific jobs, whether it means that they have instincts to herd sheep or guard property. Siberian Huskies, Boxers and Doberman Pinschers are all members of this group.

Terriers are often distinguished by their small size and their bright and energetic personalities. They are usually not dogs that are friendly with other dogs, and in the past they were bred to kill rats and other vermin. They are quite lively and you may want to think about it before you bring them into a house with small children. Jack Russell Terriers and Welsh Terriers are part of this group.

Toy dogs are, as the name implies, small and bred to be house dogs. They are great for people who don't have a lot of space and make good apartment dogs. Consider some of the very popular breeds like Chihuahuas or Yorkshire Terriers.

Herding dogs were bred to protect their charges from predators and to make animals move from place to place. Some members of this group might surprise you, like the Welsh Corgis and Swedish Vallhunds who are just about a foot tall and capable of driving cattle into pastures. These dogs are great companions, but do require good socialization and training. Border collies and Pulis are two examples of this type of dog.

Non-sporting dogs are very diverse, and this is something of a catch-all territory. They do not fit into any other group, but they might share characteristics with them. Poodles, Bulldogs and the Japanese Shiba Inu fall into this category, as do the long haired Lhasa Apso and the Keeshond.

When you are thinking about choosing a breed of dog, consider what your requirements are in terms of temperament and think about what the dog itself needs in terms of exercise, space or socialization. This is an important choice for you to make, so think about the options and make sure that you get a companion animal who suits your space and lifestyle.

There's a beautiful legend which tells that the Persian cat was created by a wizard from a sparkle, which jumped out of the fire, the shimmer of two far away stars and a curl of grey smoke. I'd say that this legend rather closely describes appearance and temperament of the Persian cat, but the real history of persian cat breed is not less interesting or less mysterious.

So how does such mutation as long hair appear in a domestic cat? None of its wild counterparts has long hair gene. Well, if only lynx and snow leopard have a slightly longer coat due to the environmental conditions of their habitat.

It's rather difficult now to investigate the origins of the long-haired cats, but most probably they are rooted in Persia, which is now called Iran. That's from where Pietro della Valle brought several long-haired cat beauties to Italy in 1620. And a few years later the scholar and naturalist Nicolas-Claude Fabri de Peiresc brought long-haired cats form Angora (now Ankara in Turkey) to France. When the first long-haired cats appeared in England (which is now called 'the second motherland of the Persian cats) they were called 'French cats'.

It's not exactly known whether those were the cats of one and the same breed. Nowadays it is the recognized fact that there existed several breeds of long-haired cats in the East. Angora cats were described as fluffy, light and active animals of a medium size, while well-known Alfred Edmund Brehm described long-haired Angora cats as big-sized and clumsy cats. He as well noted that grey and blue Angora cats were observed in the South of Siberia.

It's not easy to answer the question why the animal from hot Asian counties has got long hair, while Mother Nature usually gifted long-hair to animals from severe Northern countries.

There are several versions regarding the long-haired cats origin. Some believe that among the ancestors of the Persian cat breed there were long-haired cats form Siberia which at first got into East and Small Asia, and only then were brought to Western Europe.

Others believe that long hair was a mutation which happened to a short-haired cat in the East, which then was kept in the process of domestication and some sort of selection - thus the cats which got into Europe and Siberia were aborigineous to Eastern countries.

The third theory roots in the phenotypic differences between the Persian cats and other domestic cats. This theory suggests that massive stocky with the ears set wide, big round head are related to Pallas' Cat ( Felis manul ) otherwise known as Manul - wild cat which lives in Central Asia and has comparatively long hair, flat face with round eyes and ears set low on the head. Recent research however refutes this theory.

Such are the different Persian cat origin theories but anyway, all of them are pointing to Iran, Turkey and Afghanistan as the Persian cat native lands.

England is rightfully called the second Motherland of the Persian cats, as it were British cat fanciers who started to purposefully breed cat breeds (and primarily - Persian cat breed) in the 19th century. Although that was the time when the long-haired cats started being differentiated into Turkish Angora (long flexible body, silky but less thick coat, big pointed ears) and Persian cats (massive, with big round head and small ears), as a matter of fact only blue cats of the latter were called Persian, and all the rest were simply called 'long-haired' cats. Every of about 50 colors of long-haired cats was considered to be a separate breed. Till nowadays the Persian cat in England is not in fact called 'Persian' but rather 'long-haired', and every color variation is attributed to a separate cat breed. Also the official ruling of the British cat fanciers club regarding this issue was issued as early as 1910, the Englishmen still follow this kind of breed distinction.

The Persian cats arrived into America in the eighties of the 19th century and soon became a very popular cat breed. Unlike British clubs, in America all the color variations of the long-haired cats were attributed to one cat breed - "the Persian cat". There are lots of color variations for Persian cats but Persian show cats are limited to the following colors: solid color, shaded and smoke, tabby, particolor, bicolor.

For today we know about 150 variations of the persian cat breed and contemporary persian cat, due to the efforts of many breeders, is a work of art among the other cat breeds. New age Persian cats are quite different form their ancestors. The Persian cats of the 'old type' had a narrower face, the color variations were not so rich and the coat was not so thick and delightful. Contemporary Persian cat might have its coat as long as 10 centimeters. One could say that the contemporary persian cat is the result of selective breeding by cat breeders from different countries. Probably due to that fact there are several Persian breed standards and some of the traits are still not agreed upon.

For one, starting form the middle of the 20th century, American cat breeders's efforts were aimed at reinforcing traits peculiar to Persian breed - they were trying to breed a cat with even more massive, short body, even more round head and flat muzzle. As a result a new variation - Extreme Persian (or Peeked Faced Persian) - emerged. The first kittens of that type were born to red and red tabby persians in 1920-s. Although veterinarians believe that extreme manifestation of such traits is harmful to the animals health (specifically affecting their sinuses and breathing), and the despite the fact that British cat fanciers stand against such breeding, extreme persians are extremely popular in America and many European countries.

Contemporary persian cat became progenitor to a new breed - Exotic cat - a short-haired cat breed which has all the traits specific for the Persian cat breed with the exception of the coat length. Exotic cat is a hybrid with adorable temperament and excellent physical condition. The breed was created by American cat breeders in 1960-s. FIFe (Federation Internationale Feline) recognized the Exotic cat breed in 1984. Short (though longer than with other short-haired cat breeds) but awesome sparkly coat of the Exotic cat does not cause any problems with grooming.

Peter Leathers, as many other Persian cat fanciers is always eager to learn something new about Persian cat breed. Currently being employed as freelance writer for Catrealm.org, Peter is finally able to apply his skills to promoting some cat knowledge.

Cats make great animals for most homes, because they are very easy to plan for and generally bond easily with humans Care. Most societies and cultures worldwide have grown accustomed to adopt cats in their family structures. However, domestic cats can vary significantly in their physical design and personalities from one breed to another. Choose a cat breed that you and your family is not a task that should take lightly. Neither should choose cat breed that suits you seem like a difficult task.

The first consideration when choosing a breed of cat is the size of your living room. You may always think of cats as being leisurely Lounge Lizards, but many races spend so much time playing as a stroll. Playful cat breeds need plenty of space to play. Also, over the playground and there is more to do, such as another cat to interact with the less chance that the cat is going crazy if you do not see much for a few days.

This leads to the second consideration when choosing a breed of cat. You need to think about how long your family will be able to spend with the cat. If your friend does not much new at least get a couple of soft keys and a hug every two days, he will go mad. Although how much attention is needed too much to do with race. The other part of the consideration time is that some cats require more grooming care such as bathing and brushing. A busy family should get a cat with short hair.

The third consideration when choosing a breed of cat is allergic to cats. These allergies are not rare, but there is much variance in the extent they arise. Someone with very heavy cat allergies should probably not a cat. Someone with an allergy light resulting in little sneezes or coughs per day can have a cat, but should be careful in choosing cat breeds that will minimize exposure to allergens. For example, you want to choose a cat breeds that has short hair and rarely sheds its fur to reduce your exposure.

The fourth and probably the most often overlooked consideration when choosing a cat breed is the cost of care for this breed. Some cat breeds are more resistant than others. Many breeds have common diseases, such as deafness or hairballs that may get expensive vet visit. Also, a cat that weighs half as much and has a lazy temperament eat less than half as much as the cat who weighs twice as expensive and full of energy.

The fifth and last consideration when choosing cat breeds is how the personality of the pool of connections with other persons of your family. Cats come in different characteristics and temperament. There are knees, child-friendly, inside, hunters independent and jealous, a cat person.

What is a good low price food to feed a Mastiff breed dog?

What is a good low price food to feed a Mastiff breed dog? I am looking for answers from people that own a mastiff and use the food, where can I buy it? Thanks

I'd suggest not putting your dog on too low of a priced dog food. They have Eukanuba breed specific dog food for animals at any dogs store. They aren't as expensive but aren't such a cheap dog food that it will hurt your dog in the long run. Two of the three mastiff owners i know use it. I use the boxer specific for my dog in Eukanuba.

good luck.

The reasons why puppies chew on your lovely bathroom slippers or other stuffs at home, a time is because they are teething. Teething in babies produces pretty much the same desire to chew in dogs. Teething dogs usually chew on things to help them with the itching sensation it produces.

The basic concepts of dog training is all about understanding the language of your dog and teaching it to understand your own language. Information about breeding dogs that you must have is the perfect blending of your needs and your dog's needs. Training your dog requires a substantial amount of patience to make it successful.

Dogs need to have a good, healthy diet as much as human beings too. The diet of a dog is usually a contributing element to its stability. You can feed your dog with the food it needs by visiting dog stores where all kinds of dog food is sold.

Dog training commands should be short, concise and enunciated clearly if your dog is going to respond to it. Some dog handlers train their dogs in French or German. Dog training commands are designed to be comprehensible to the dog in order for it to respond favorably.

It is not enough to train your dog to obey each of your commands as you will also have to get it to love you as well. A relationship between you and your dog that is based on love and trust can enhance your training sessions. If your dog is terrified of you, training it may not be a raving success.

Some training gadgets are made with the size of the dog in mind. Some huge dogs have such thick necks that some collars would be a miserable fit on. If you have a particularly large dog, a pronged collar will be good for it.

Training your dog requires a firm knowledge of dog training skills. You can either obtain dog-training skills from a dog trainer or coach yourself through related literature. Without the right amount of patience you will be unable to communicate your needs to your dog because dog training requires lot of patience.

The Internet provides useful information about training dogs-- to properly train dogs. There are sites that gives information on on how to train specific breed of dog-- like on how to present a Westminster dog show.

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. All training and no fun can turn your dog into a bored canine. Always mix fun with your dog training sessions to encourage your dog to look forward to them.

Large Breed
Would you consider a dog that is half Boxer, half Bull terrier a large breed type dog?

She is a puppy right now and I am trying to decide what type of dog food too use. I see there are types of food for puppies that Purina makes for large breed type dogs. Do you think I should be using the large breed type? Thanks for any help!

I would call it a medium size breed, because boxers are kind of big and bull terriers are kind of small.

I love boxers!! icon smile Large Breed

Gastric torsion is seen most often in large breeds including the Great Dane and Bloodhound as well as some of the intermediate size breeds. Torsion of the stomach is the abnormal positioning of the stomach caused by the stomach rotation about its axis. This is better explained as a mechanical twist of the stomach. In essence, the stomach becomes filled with gas, food, liquid, or a combination thereof which causes the stomach to become abnormally enlarged or distended. At this point when a dog engages in a sudden jump or plays and rolls around, the stomach actually swings in a pendulum-like motion which results with it swinging completely around the fixation point of the stomach where the esophagus passes through the diaphragm, thus giving rise to a twist.

Gastric dilatation and volvulus, also referred to as GDV, is more commonly called bloat. This is what usually leads to torsion, although torsion can occur without bloat. Chronic gastric volvulus, which is ongoing mild torsion, may not cause typical signs of GDV, but should be suspected in dogs with intermittent vomiting, weight loss, mild bloating, rumbling sounds in the bowel known as borborygmi, or belching. Depending on how quickly the problem is dealt with, GDV may result in a stomach that is rotated by anywhere from 90 degrees to 360.

Severe torsion usually means the displacement of both the stomach and the spleen as they actually exchange positions. The speed, at which the stomach empties itself, as well as the stomach digestive contraction pace, is thought to play a role in the development of GDV. Certain food types such as peas, onions, beans, beet pulp, etc. are also implicated.

Gastric dilatation and volvulus most commonly occurs in large breeds, but has also been reported in Bassets, Dachshunds and cats. Reported fatality rates range from 15 percent to 60. There is also a high recurrence rate when Gastropexy surgery is not performed to permanently attach the stomach to an anatomically acceptable part of the body, such as a rib. Bloat surgery is a very painful, major operation and is potentially life threatening especially in cases involving old dogs. Dr. John Lammerding, a board certified veterinary surgeon, with extensive clinical experience with GDV cases, believes that GDV in old dogs are typically caused by excessive hyperventilation via sucking too much air due to the fact that some old dogs, like old people, develop breathing difficulties due to the aging process. Theoretically, this state of hyperventilation can then be prevented by keeping the old dog calm and preventing him or her from hyperventilating. With young dogs, Dr. Lammerding suggests more of a genetic predisposition.

Regardless of the cause of GDV, the end result is a distended and twisted stomach. GDV results in physiological changes that create a medical and surgical emergency. Treatment must be instituted immediately if the animal is to survive. If the dog cannot be treated immediately by a veterinarian, the owner may be forced to render first aid to his dog.

Prevention of this condition is the best choice, and it is highly recommended that you should discuss the treatment of bloat and torsion with your veterinarian the next time you schedule an appointment. Not all veterinarians are familiar with the proper emergency treatment of GDV and fewer yet are familiar with proper surgical technique and post surgery care and monitoring. It is imperative that you make sure that your veterinarian is familiarized with the proper procedures before his or her skills are needed. If your veterinarian is not receptive to or is offended by your queries, then it may perhaps be time for you to find a more responsive veterinarian.
