Freshwater fish come in a variety of shapes and colors. Each one is beautiful and unique in its own way, but one species stands out from among the rest. That one is the Siamese Fighting Fish, also known as the Betta Fish. When healthy, these fish are very hardy and brightly colored. They enhance the look of any tank. Therefore, they are becoming very popular. However, many people do not know how to properly care for them.

The most important thing to know about these fish is that males do not like other males. If you put two males together, they will fight and eventually kill each other. However, a male Betta will live peacefully with several female Betta Fish at once. Secondly, because these fish can breathe air, they do not require a lot of space. They can successfully be kept in a smaller tank if the proper conditions are met. However, they will be happier and more brightly colored if they have more space to swim. It is also important to remember that Betta do not like temperature variations. They will be much healthy if their water temperature is kept at a steady temperature of about 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

Although these fish can and do eat plants, plants do not contain the nutrition that they need. Betta Fish are carnivores and therefore have to eat meat. Small worms, such as blood worms, are a good food source. They can also eat brine shrimp and other crustaceans. Also remember that a Betta's waste products, just like those of other fish, produce a lot of ammonia. If this builds up in their water, it can eventually kill them. Therefore, it is important to periodically remove old water and add new.

The most common misconception about Betta fish is that males will fight with all other fish. As mentioned earlier, males will fight with other males but they will not fight with all other fish. A single male Betta fish makes an excellent addition to a community tank. Many other community fish will co-exist peacefully with male Bettas. However there are some fish that should be avoided. Stay away from fin nipping fish like Tiger Barbs and Serpae Tetras. The long flowing fins of Bettas will only be targets for these fish. Also avoid other Gouramis, they are often territorial and could fight over territories in the fish tank.

Betta prefer large aquariums, and do much better there. However, if you do decide to keep your Betta Fish in a smaller tank, there are several things to remember. First, keep your tank out of direct sunlight and drafts, as these can change the water temperature. Second, treat the water and change a fourth of it several times a week. Third, cover your tank with a ventilated lid. This will keep your fish from escaping its tank while still allowing air flow. Lastly, think about putting some plants in your tank. These will help increase the quality of the water, as well as give your Betta some cover. If you follow these simple steps, you should be able to enjoy your Betta for a long time to come.

Brine Shrimp Eggs
How long do brine shrimp eggs last?

I am trying to hatch some brine shrimp eggs that I have had for a year (?), but none are hatching. I put them in the hatchery on Thursday of last week. How long are the eggs good? I want to hatch them to give my angels a little treat.

Also, what is an easy way to get them to hatch earlier? I know you have to raise the temperature, but what would be a safe way to do that?
I have a tank heater, but it is too big. Here is my hatchery:

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c215/myleshowling/shrimp.jpg

It is about 6 inches tall (the black part) and a normal tank heater will not fit in it. It is a cheap one, but it usually works.

You could also put them under a standard light. You will also be able to get a better count of the hatched eggs as the shrimp will gravitate towards the light.

Just be sure not to leave them there too long or you will cook them.

PS: I used to own the same hatchery. I do believe the light trick is in the instructions and neccesary to make the shrimp move out of the hatchery and into the container. Also be sure that the container is full to the top as the hatchlings will not be able to pass through the opening if there is an air bubble there.

The Bala Shark, scientific name Balantiocheilos Melanopterus, isn't really an actual shark but was named as such because of its appearance, which features silver coloring and tall dorsal fins. They make an excellent addition to an aquarium due in part to their mild-temperament as well as their beauty and grace. These energetic fish also form gorgeous schools and are compatible with several different tank mates to add an interesting variety to your aquarium.

Bala Sharks can be started out in a larger aquarium of around 30 gallons of water, and always with a secure cover with no gaps or openings as they tend to be crafty jumpers. Water temperature for the Bala Shark can be anywhere from 71 and 83 degrees Fahrenheit for them to thrive and be healthy. The PH level should be kept around 7.0 as well.

An exterior power filtration system with about a ¼ inch of gravel will also provide the correct environment for the Bala Shark, also known as the Silver Shark or the Tri-Colored Shark. They should also have plenty of plants and rocks to hide among, especially until they are familiar and comfortable with their new surroundings.

The Bala Shark's diet consists of freeze-dried blood worms, which are really the larvae of mosquitoes, and also floating, flake food. Both of these are found in pet stores or where ever fish and aquariums are sold. They also enjoy eating live black worms and either live or frozen brine shrimp. Bala Sharks are also known for making a distinct clicking noise, which can be startling until you know the source.

Eventually, a Bala Shark may need a 75 gallon aquarium, or possibly even larger, as they can grow quite a bit during their lifespan, which can be anywhere from eight to twelve years with proper care. It's imperative to provide the right tank size with plenty of room for the active Bala to swim and grow in order for them to reach full maturity.

A young shark may be around two inches long and grow to about seven inches in just a few years. The Bala Shark can get as large as 14 inches in length, but the average size seems to be around seven or eight inches. There is no way to determine the sex of the Bala, other than if you happen to see the females laying their eggs among the gravel as these fish are "egg scatterers". The females also tend to be a bit plumper during the breeding season than their male counterparts.

Bala Sharks are schooling fish and will fare best in groups of at least four to six other Balas. Some of the marine life that will make good tank mates with Balas are Barbs, including the Tinfoil Barb, Gouramis, Danios, Rainbow Fish and a few Spiny Eels. Even smaller Guppies and Tetras would be compatible with the Bala Shark due to their docile manner.

Although usually low-maintenance and easy to care for, these fish tend to be susceptible to disease and illnesses such as ich or shimmy, particularly if kept in crowded conditions. Learning the signs of stress or sickness in fish and how to treat it will make sure you enjoy your Bala Sharks for years to come.
