Cat Scratching Tree
My cat has a mulit-tier cat tree for climbing and scratching, but he never uses it. Help?

About a week ago I bought my cat Connor a cat tree. Its sole purpose is for scratching and climbing, yet he ignores it like he ignores it. I have put him on it a few times and he will scratch it once or twice, take in the nice higher view and jump off. It has 3 tiers to it. the top is about 6ft up then 4 then 2ft off the ground for the last one. I put him on the 4ft one so its not high because he can just jump to the dresser where his food is. he makes that jump all the time from the bed. Its like he just is plainly uninterested, whereas my sisters cats would give their tails for one of these she says. Any help on getting Connor a tad more interested in it before i give it to my sisters cats?

You can try one of these two method to teach your kitten/cat to use the scratching post and better utilize the cat tree.

Method One

Hold treats near the post to get your cat to come near the post. Slowly, make your cat come closer and closer to the post to get the treat. Then increase the height at which you are holding the treat so your cat must put his paws up the post to reach the treat. Gradually increase the height at which you hold the treat so that your cat eventually has to climb to the top in order to get the treat. This training session is a slow process to be worked on each day, making small progress each time you work on it.

Method Two

Using the kind of cat toys that are at the end of a string, dangle, drag, and swing one of your cat's toys. Do this on and around the post. Use the scratching post as the play area. Your cat will climb up and down and around his post to try to reach his toy. By doing this, his post will be a place of fun and good memories.

Good Luck!

Many pet owners love their animals, but find themselves extremely frustrated with some annoying habits of their animals. For instance, with dogs, pet owners find themselves completely fed up with their need to bark at every sudden movement they see outside the house. On the other hand, for cat owners, they find themselves annoyed by their cat's needs to scratch things. It turns out to be rather inconvenient for most owners to come home from a night out and see a pillow completely shredded from their cat. Or to find a perfectly new leather sofa split open by cat scratches.

The truth is, cats simply need to scratch. The family of felines all love scratching and the cat is no exception. The issue is found in the fact that usually cats find what seems to be the worst possible item in the house to scratch. The solution to your cat scratching problems is probably found in a cat scratching tree. This offers a cat something in your house that is acceptable for scratching. If the cat knows it can scratch something in the house, it will be less likely to scratch something that is not acceptable to scratch, after all, your cat is not shredding things up and making your life miserable as a result of vengeful hatred, it just simply needs to scratch something.

Finding the right cat scratching tree for your cat is actually fairly simple. You need to consider the appropriate size of cat scratching tree that will suit your cat best. Obviously buying a large tree would not suit a very small cat, but would work perfectly if you own several large cats. Another consideration should be finding something they enjoy scratching. Try to find a cat scratching tree that is made of a material that they would enjoy scratching as opposed to something that will make them want to scratch elsewhere. The best way to figure this out is to take note of exactly what they are scratching before you buy a tree and find one that is made of the same material so that they do not return to scratching an item you want to keep in great condition.

Cat Scratching

How do you stop a cat from scratching the walls?

What is a good way to keep a cat from scratching at the walls? I have scratching posts for him that he uses, but he also scratches the walls and I would like to stop him from doing that.

Put some catnip on the scratching post, consider getting more scratching posts, put carpet on the walls so he can scratch it, or put tape on the walls so he gets irritated by the tape sticking to his hands and goes away.

At one point in history cats were revered, praised even worshiped. If you ask your cat, it probably thinks things should still be that way. Your cat would probably point out that he doesnÂ’t think heÂ’s getting all the things he deserves in life. While you may think a few toys, some catnip, food and water are enough, cats like it all. But weÂ’re going to ask your cat to give you the benefit of the doubt that you may not know about all the pieces of cat furniture that your feline is missing out on.

One piece of cat furniture that seems to transcend all cats is something to scratch. That is part of cat nature. They need to work their claws, mark their space, and if you donÂ’t give them something to scratch, theyÂ’ll find something, most likely your furniture. While some pet stores will sell you little blocks for your cat to scratch on, that is not going to do for the long run. Your cat needs something he can really get a good work out on. You may want to look for long or tall scratching posts, or even cat trees. A good rule of thumb is to make sure the scratching surface you are getting for your cat is taller or longer than your cat when he is stretched completely out. And if you look into cat trees or posts that are covered with carpet or woven sisal material, your cat will be addicted to getting his claw work out there.

Just as dogs like houses to hide away from the world, so do cats. They are predatory animals and like to have their cover, even if all they are stalking is a mosquito that has gotten into the house. These pieces of cat furniture can come in a number of shapes and heights, all the way up to kitty condos that can hold multiple cats.

Unless your cat has medical issues that prevent climbing, cats love height. This is noted by the creators of cat furniture because many of the cat furniture items on the market are nice and tall so your cat can do plenty of climbing and pouncing. Jumping up and down the perches of cat furniture play areas are also a good way for an indoor cat to get much needed exercise.

If you want to get bonus points with your cat, place a piece of cat furniture near a window. Nothing pleases cats more than letting them watch what is happening in the outside world. And itÂ’s even better if they can do it from the safety of their own cat furniture.

In the fun portion of the cat furniture market are some unique pieces. If you have a cat that used to live outside, that you have turned into an indoor cat, there are cat scratching and climbing posts that have been molded to look just like a real trees, to remind them of their outside years. Or if you really want to pamper your cat, some cat furniture items have been built as elaborate palaces and retreats where your cat may live in better fashion than you.

Does your cat like Ikea Scratching post (BÄSTIS BLOND)?

I am thinking of getting an Ikea Cat Scratching Post (BÄSTIS BLOND). It looks good and it's wall mounted so it won't take much space... but I am worried if cats would like this cat tree. Does any of you have this product at home for your cats? Does your cats use it?

I don't have it but I'm looking at it online right now http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20112073

For the price ($89.99) it looks rather rickety. Not sure how a cat is expected to get to those higher shelves. I'd be afraid those wimpy shelves would break and the cat would fall. And this is coming from someone who's a total IKEA addict - my whole house is IKEA.

http://www.drsfostersmith.com and http://www.petedge.com have sturdier posts for around the same or less money.

Some cats are furniture diggers and some aren't. And if you've ever had the back of a chair or the arms of a sofa reduced to fringe, you know the galactic-level frustration of having one that is. Since scratching is an innate feline behavior, you're never going to put a complete stop to it. But there are ways to get cats to answer this call of nature in a way that doesn't destroy your property.

Be clear on two things: one, you're never going to get a cat to stop scratching. It's an innate behavior that serves a whole lot of feline purposes, from stretching to territorial marking. And two, punishment (hitting, shouting, etc.) is never, ever going to work. Cats just don't understand or respond to punishment. Trying to punish a cat out of undesirable behavior will almost certainly destroy your relationship with the cat, and may even exacerbate exactly the behavior you're trying to eradicate. For those of us who refuse to even consider declawing, the key to happy co-existence with furniture diggers is to make them understand that the furniture is off limits for scratching. Here are some ways to do that.

1. Give the cat an alternative by setting up a scratching post. There are lots of commercial scratching posts available, mostly some variation on a carpet-covered block. The design particulars aren't very important, but the post should be tall enough to give the cat a good stretch (28" - 30" or so) and it must be heavy enough to remain upright when being scratched. If it falls over on top of the cat every time he tries to use it (and yes, I once had one that did just that), it kind of defeats your purpose. I've tried many types of scratching posts and without a doubt, the one that got the most action was a big, flat-bottomed section of a huge log, about two feet high and a foot and a half wide.

Put your new scratching post right in front of whatever it is the cat has been scratching. Granted, a two-foot stump might not be exactly the perfect accent to your decor, but then neither is shredded upholstery. If the cat really likes it, you can always gradually move it to a less conspicuous place. If you meet with a lot of resistance, try rubbing it with catnip.

2. Go on the defense by covering the area that's being scratched with a material cats don't like. Wide smooth tape like postal strapping tape works well. Duct tape works too, but it looks almost as bad as the scratched upholstery. Or try covering the area with aluminum foil taped in place (looks REALLY awful, but can work wonders). If none of those coverings work, try covering the area with double-sided tape. Cats hate sticky surfaces.

3. Go on the offensive. If you can actually catch the cat in mid-dig, a quick shot with a water pistol or a spray bottle full of water is pretty effective. So is blowing a whistle or banging a tin pan. This is a tricky one, though, because point here is NOT to punish the cat, it's to make her associate scratching the furniture with something she isn't nuts about (water or loud noises).
