July 22nd, 2009 admin No comments

Just like we need certain equipment for our daily lives, our pets also require certain items to help them maintain healthy, happy lives. When choosing dog equipment there are a number of different items that can be purchased but some are essential for dog owners to have. Providing a dog with shelter, safety and confirm its identity. Consider these areas to get you started.

Identification Equipment

Dog tags should be purchased and attached to the dog's collar or harness for identification. The tag typically includes the owner's phone number, address, zip code and the pet's name. In most areas a dog license will also be required this will include the identification number issued to the dog and contact information for its licensing organization.

Basic Equipment

A dog collar and leash is needed for taking your pet on walks to ensure they don't run out into traffic and get injured. A leash is also needed to comply with leash laws, which in some areas require that dogs be secured when not on their owner's property. If your dog goes missing the tag attached to the leash will help him be identified and returned home; making it essential that a quality durable leash that will not easily tear or be yanked off by your pet is chosen. If a dog will be sleeping outside a dog house and kennel are ideal for protecting your animal in all weather conditions and offering safe shelter. Inside a dog bed will provide your animal a comfortable place for sleeping and resting. Every dog you have will also require their own feeding and water bowls to help them feel secure in their environment.

Grooming Equipment

Keeping your dog clean will require getting them equipment specifically made for dogs. A dog grooming brush, comb, shampoo and conditioner are a must for keeping your pet free from fleas and other pest. Nail clippers will keep your dog from scratching furniture in the home or accidentally stretching family members. Clippers and shears may also be needed for managing your pet's hair to keep it from becoming matted and odor free. Tooth scalers can remove plague from dog teeth, eye drops can remove gunk from eyes and ear powder can be sprayed on the ears for keeping ears dry and keeping infections away.

Equipment for Exercise and Fun

For your dog to have an active life, equipment that keeps your dog entertained should be used. For boredom reducers' sock balls are great for tug-of-war and tossing games and flying discs are great for playing fetch. Chew toys will keep your dog something to gnaw besides your shoes and furniture. Rawhide bones, biscuits, chewy treats and more can be used to reward good behavior. Dental sticks are useful at improving the appearance and health of your dog's teeth. For improving muscle strength, stamina and resistance of your pet a dog treadmill is the ultimate purchase. They are ideal for active dogs or those on the brink of becoming obese. Dog treadmills are useful when bad weather or time constraints prevents you from taking your dog on a walk or exercising outdoors or if you just want your pet to have more versatility in their workouts.

Are Pugs A Good Choice For Families With Small Children

July 11th, 2009 admin No comments

No family feels complete without a dog, but what do your children need to know to make certain that having a Pug, will be the best pet for your family? Children need to learn to make sure the dog has plenty of food and fresh water on a daily basis, receives adequate exercise, gets let outside at regular intervals, is treated kindly and does not have access to things they can chew up and ingest. This article is going to explain in detail how your children can learn to mix well with a Pug.

Water and Food:

Every dog needs access to fresh food and water on a daily basis, once your child has learned this, they can help take care of the family pet. Teaching children that a dog needs the right nutrition to grow big and strong, is a great way to teach them the importance of the dogs diet. This talk can be brought up when you are explaining why its important for children to eat their vegetables.

Getting Enough Exercise:

Another factor in keeping your Pug happy and healthy is to make sure he or she gets enough exercise. A dog needs to have regular exercise to help them stay fit and maintain a healthy lifestyle. A game of fetch with a ball or Frisbee is a classic, and a good way to get those little feet moving. Explain to your children that just like a human being, mans best friend needs to stay in shape too.

Outside Breaks:

This is a big part of the responsibility of owning a dog and will not go unnoticed if a someone lets it slide. Explain to children that it is important the dog is let outside to go to the bathroom and it will help them gain a sense of responsibility. A child will come to notice that some things have to be done consistently, and cannot be put off while picking up another skill that will assist them in becoming more independent when it comes to taking care of the family dog.

Playing Nicely:

You need to be extremely gentle with your pets because you do not have any idea how the dog is going to respond, especially a new environment. You should talk to your children about playing nicely and then illustrate this behavior to them. Children are natural mimics and once you show them how you treat a Pug, they will learn how to be gentle from you.

Chewy Dog Toys:

This is a great chance for children to learn about picking up their toys. Pugs cannot always tell the difference between a new chew toy and a childs toy. An honest and frank talk with the children about what can happen when they leave their toys laying around might help you keep the house a bit more tidy, if only because the children do not want the dog chewing up their favorite toys.

The sooner a child learns about the responsibility that comes along with owning a dog, the better the situation will be. They must learn to feed the dog and give it water every day, take the dog for a walk, let it outside regularly, give it adequate attention and provide it with access to toys that are safe to chew on. Teaching children all about these responsibilities will allow them to learn a lot from owning a Pug.

Solving Dog Chewing problems

* First of all "prevention is better than the cure" having a dog requires responsibility, don't leave valuable items laying around so that your dog can get to them, unless your dog has proper obedience training.
* Chewing is natural for dogs, so provide your dogs with tasty chew toys, condition your dog to understand that if he needs to chew, that is what he chews on. Fill his chew toy with his favorite treats and reward him for chewing on it.

* Take your dog out to play, go on a walk, jog, dog park or a dog beach, give him lots of exercise, play games with him fetch, catch obedience training so that he doesn't have so much energy bottled up inside.

* Until your dog is properly obedience trained, keep him in a confined area, a kennel, dog crate, or you can just section off a corner of your house or yard.

Chew Toy
How can I Make a chew toy for my new puppy?

Because times are tough for us and we just got a new puppy I was wondering if you had any ideas to make her some chew toys she has a couple but she loves to bite things! like any golden retriever!! So if you have any websites or just any ideas that would be great!

Whatever you give her, keep in mind that dogs can't tell the difference between what you distinguish as a toy and what you consider to be a "good pair of shoes", a "good pair of socks", a "special stuffed animal from your childhood", or a "good rope hanging in the garage". To a dog, that stick in the park is made of the same thing as his dog house, the porch railing and your shovel handle. (trust me on this, I speak from experience)
The best thing is just plain old bones. Those huge things that are like 2 feet long with the big knuckles on the end will last a good long time, depending on how strong a chewer you have. Butchers will often sell these for a small price, if you just ask.

An easy favorite for summer:
Freeze the meal's worth of doggy chow in an ice cream bucket with a couple cups of water. Pop it out and serve *outside*!! Goldens love to chew and lick the ice block - it's like a doggy popsicle.

Most dogs actually need and will appreciate dog chew toys, as they usually can find fun with toys. For you as a dog owner, these toys can help manage your dog's natural inclination to keep on chewing. If you select the right toys, you can keep your dog away from things in the house which you do not like him to gnaw. Besides, chewing can also encourage teeth and gum health and can relieve anxiety and boredom. So, what exactly you should look for when choosing chew toys?

Choose the Right Size

Different dogs are in different sizes, and you should choose just the right size toy for your dog. If the toy is too big, many dogs do not want to play with it at all. On the other hand, however, if the toy is too small, you dog might accidentally swallow it and choke on it. So, you really should know about your dog's breed and size very well to pick the right toy size. Fortunately, many reputable dog toy manufacturers often have detailed description on the toy label to help you decide if the toy is for your pet.

Make Sure the Toy is Safe

Needless to say, the safety features of the chew toys should be thoroughly considered when you choose them. Dependent on your dog's breed, a chew toy that is too hard might damage his teeth. If the toy is too soft, however, it might bring about accidental ingestion of torn or chipped parts. It is a general rule that you should avoid chew toys with small beads, buttons, strings, wire, bells and fake fur. Even a mild-tempered dog could rip off small parts and swallow them, resulting in choking, mouth wounds, and damage to the intestines and constipation.

Pick a Variety of Toys

You do not want to have a full box of chew toys for your dog, but you should at least prepare several. If a dog plays with only one toy, he can easily get bored. To keep him interested in toys, you should have some variety to rotate. Chew toys with edible treat are also smart choices, as they encourage dogs to play with them.

Watch Your Dog and His Toys

Chew toys are not pet nannies so you should at least keep an occasional eye at your dog while he is at play. This will help you respond faster in case your dog is about to ingest a non-edible part.

From time to time, you should check the status of the chew toys. A defective or partly damaged toy could become a health risk for your dog. Replace toys that have tears, partly dislodged parts or extremely worn out surfaces.

Your Veterinarian Counts

If you are not sure whether a chew toy is appropriate for your dog, the first person you should consult is your veterinarian. He might even be able to recommend good toy brands or retailers.

As said, dog chew toys can bring enormous benefits to a dog's physical and psychological health. With all the tips discussed in this article, you are certainly able to pick up toys that are not just enjoyable but also safe to your pet.

What is the best dog toy to keep a Labrador Retriever busy?

I have a 10 month old Labrador Retreiver and he is very good at chewing.

Now before I had this dog, I had another Lab and the other dog was a good chewer, but if we gave him a toy like a Boodah Chew, it would take him a few hours to eat it all. But here is the thing, the old dog was a dog who would chew something until it was gone, but this dog will chew his toys in multiple sittings. He will eat Kong Toys with peanut butter in one sitting, but the problem is, this new dog is a genius. He knows how to open the doors of the house, he knows how to unscrew lids. Its rediculous.

So I was wondering if there is a rough dog Chew toy (Doesn't need to be reusable) that is good to keep a Lab busy and interested.

A kong with a treat inside
