what kind of floating plants can i add to my tank?

it is a 29 gallon, HEAVALY planted tank.

1 water lilly
3 amazon sword plants
8 corkscrew
2 wendenti
a lot of drawf hair grass from one end to the tank to the other in the fore ground
1 super red foxtail
1 money wort
2 java ferns
4 anbius
and then sevel other differnt types of sword plants that im not sure the names of.

i currently have a pressurised co2 system, two bubbles per second in the bubble counter, my co2 levels are 30 ppm
i run oxegen at night
eco complete subsrait
2 6700k baulbs, one in front and one in back
aquaclear 50 filter

i currently have..
7 tiger barbs
2 bristel nose plecos (1 of them is albino)
4 dimond tetra
1 betta ( barbs wont hurt it because they are in a large schoal)

I don't know if you've thought about this, but if you use floating plants, you'll be cutting the light the rooted plants get. Your Java fern might not care, but the dwarf hairgrass might.

Floating plants will do just that, float around with the water movement. You could put in some kind of divider just at the top, like a piece of foam to divide the tank into sections, open over the high-light plants and with the floating plants over the ones that don't need as much light.

You could try frogbit, giant salvinia, or watersprite. If you get watersprite, chances are it will come with a long stem like this http://www.plantgeek.net/plantguide_viewer.php?id=53 Just float it, and it will turn into floating rosettes of leaves like this http://www.petfish.net/articles/pics/water_sprite.jpg

An under counter water filter can be an expensive purchase.  I’ve seen under counter water filters that cost as much as $800.  But, I’ve also seen products that sell for as little as $143.98.  What’s the difference?

The product that sells for nearly $800 is made by a reputable water purification company, let’s call “All Things Pure.”  If the name brings to mind bubbling springs and fields full of wild flowers, that’s what the marketers were hoping for.

The company designs reverse osmosis systems for industries, businesses and homeowners.  But, you have to remember to compare “apples to apples” when you’re shopping for under counter water filters.

The $800 model was strictly designed for homeowners serviced by a public supplier.  Unless you have a private well or other private source, you fit into that category.

The problems with publicly treated waters include:

* Chlorine, used by the facilities to disinfect and control algae growth in the pipelines. It causes digestive disorders and other health problems.

* THMs or trihalomethanes and other byproducts of chemical disinfection. They cause cancer.

* VOCs or volatile organic compounds include chemicals such as perchlorate that causes thyroid problems, metabolic disorders and developmental problems in children.  These chemicals have yet to be regulated by the EPA or other government agencies.  They are common surface and groundwater pollutants.

* Lead, a naturally occurring heavy metal, used to line pipes and solder joints together until governments recently banned its use.  Chlorine is so caustic that it dissolves lead and it ends up in public drinking water supplies.  It causes a long list of health problems, but is most hazardous to children.

* Cysts, parasites that cause varying degrees of illness, ranging from mild flu-like symptoms to fatalities.  Resistant to chlorine and other chemical disinfectants, they may be present in publicly treated or bottled waters.

Under counter water filters that remove all of these things are available, but to get one from the All Things Pure company, you have to pay $800, simply because they include a reverse osmosis step, which has been replaced by submicron particle filtration.

An under counter water filter that includes submicron particle filtration can be purchased for as little as $143.98.  The system has the necessary steps to remove all of the contaminants listed above.

So, it’s not necessary to pay $800 for under counter water filters and I don’t think that anyone should have to.  Because of the importance of drinking something pure, I believe that everyone should be able to afford to effectively filter their water.  Some companies obviously agree with me.

But, companies like All Things Pure will try to convince you that their under counter water filters are better than all the rest.  Don’t buy into their advertising hype.  Reverse osmosis is completely unnecessary and simply impractical.

With the right under counter water filter, families can save the thousands of dollars per year that they would have spent buying bottled waters and be safer in the long run.  So, make the right choice for your family, today.

Live aquarium plants... Advice?

I purchased some aquarium plants online for my goldfish. I did some research prior to buying and got exactly the type of plants that are "ok" in a goldfish aquarium. Unfortunately these plants refuse to grow in gravel, and probably require some kind of "aquarium soil". I know nothing about these things and I cannot afford expensive equipment, soil, pots for aquarium plants. Are there any cheap/easy solutions?

Right now the plants I bought are almost dead. My goldfish act like pigs near an oak digging for acorns. They leave nothing standing in the gravel. I refuse to use plastic plants because live plants look so much better and they are good for the water and the fish. Please help.

I need some website where everything I need can be purchased. LINKS PLEASE.

There is much that can go into the equation as to the keeping of live plants an unfortunately a lot of anecdotal information as to lighting, CO2 and ferts.

As to lighting 2-3 watts per gallon (not 3-4) is a good start, but is about as a good a rule as 1 gallon per fish.
What type of light, PAR, Lumens, Kelvin and more all play a role. There are also many newer bulbs that "out shine" the older stand bys such as the LED, T-5 and newest yet, the SHO. I recommend this article for more current information here: http://www.americanaquariumproducts.com/Aquarium_Lighting.html

As to substrate, you need a sand (#00) around the roots that is nutrient rich. This can be a homemade prepared mulch or some of the newer products such as Azoos Plant Grower Media, or older stand bys such as Eco Complete.

As to ferts and Carbon (CO2), this can be supplied in part by bio decomposition as well as a good substrate such as the Azoo Grower Bed. CO2 can be supplied by organisms such as the fish, however for faster growth products such as Flourish Excel, of CO2 generators help. The addition of CO2 is not essential though, it just accelerates growth an allows the keeping of more difficult plants, which I doubt you are interested in. Also should CO2 addition interest you, this need not bee expensive, as besides the Flourish Excel there are simple CO2 units from Germany called Floramat that are much less expensive and simpler to operate than often over priced and over rated CO2 generators on the market

The type of plant makes a difference, not all plants need a lot of light. Java Fern do well in low light as do the hardy Anubias (which adapt well to the more hard water conditions that goldfish prefer).

Also keep in mind that goldfish will destroy many plants, so you are very limited here.

I would recommend this plant article for some basics and links to more advanced information:

Plants play an important role in aquarium life. They help to absorb nitrites that are toxic to the fish. In fact there are some plant only aquariums. There are many different varieties of aquatic plants. Tubers are a type of plant that needs to be anchored by the root to the bottom of the tank. They may be tied or simply buried underneath the substrate in the bottom of the aquarium. There are also floating plants. As their name suggests they simply float in the tank they do not need to be anchored and will not usually require fertilizer. The only regular care required is to make sure that water droplets are not regularly deposited on the leaves, as this will cause decay.

Water lettuce and Lily pads are examples of floating plants. Rooted plants, like tubers need to be anchored to the bottom of the tank. It is suggested that the roots be tied to pieces of rock or wood. These species usually grow to be fairly tall and will add length to an aquarium. When planting these, remember to allow plenty of room for growth. The roots will grow outwards and require additional space. Another type of aquatic plant is known as cuttings. These plants may be transplanted from other thriving plants, without have to root them. Cuttings should be planted individually. They will grow vertically and sprout shoots at the joints of the leaves. When these shoots grow to be a couple of inches, it is time to cut them and plant them individually.

Live plants may be kept in aquariums alone or with fish. The plants may even be used as a food source for some species of omnivorous fish. At the very least, they will provide shelter and a feeling of refuge for the fish. All plants require some form of light in order to thrive through photosynthesis. Check the specifics on the types of plants with your local retailer. Some plants will thrive on the waste put out by the fish in the aquarium, while others will require regular fertilization. Again check with your supplier for compatibility and feeding requirements. When purchasing plants, make sure that they are true aquatic plants. Live plants should be pruned weekly. Dead or broken leaves should be removed daily.

A live plant aquarium will require the same basic equipment needed for an aquarium containing fish. The basics are as follows. You will need a tank, some sort of filtration system, lighting and some basic cleaning tools. The plants are fairly easy to care for, but you do have to keep up with your regular maintenance. Synthetic plants may be a good alternative to live plants, if you are not willing to make the investment in live plants. Faux plants have come a long way in recent years. So much so, that your fish may not even notice the difference. Whether you choose live or synthetic plants, they will add interest and life to any aquarium.

External Aquarium
Hep how do I set up an external filter in my aquarium?

I have just been given a Fluvel 204 external filter from a friend but he has lost the instructions how far apart do I have to put the inlet and out let pipes as he can't remember and are they easy to use .

If you were so inclined, you could put them right next to each other. Ideally, you would put in input at one end of the tank with the output at the other. This will create the best water circulation, which carries heat, oxygen, and nutrients to, and away from, fish, plants, and necessary bacteria. By the way, Fluval canisters are great!

There is no doubt that aquariums can beautify your house but since fish are living organisms the aquarium is bound to get dirty. If you are wondering “what products should I use to keep my aquarium clean” then I recommended you make a note of the following products that can help you keep your aquarium crystal clear.

The first product that can help you keep your aquarium clean is an aquarium python. This product is very beneficial during water changes. It can help you clean the water of your aquarium without any hassle.

Aquarium pythons allow you to clean the gravel in the aquarium while doing a water change without disturbing the fish. The aquarium python is a long pipe that allows you to directly fill water from the tap and also let the water out the aquarium directly into the sink. Most aquarium pythons allow you to adjust the water flow and some of these devices come with extra fittings such as a splash proof outlets to prevent water splashing when you are letting the water out of the aquarium.

It is also possible to get battery operated siphons that can help you clean the gravel and water of an aquarium. Battery operated siphons are beneficial if you have aquariums that hold less than 15 gallons water.

The second product that can help you keep your aquarium clean is a magnetic glass cleaner. Magnetic glass cleaners allow you to clean algae from the insides of the glass without putting your hand inside the aquarium. It is important to note that special magnetic cleaners are available for acrylic aquariums and regular magnetic cleaners should not be used on acrylic aquariums since they can cause permanent scratches. It is also possible to get aquarium cloth mops or other algae cleaning accessories that are suspended on a stick and help you clean those hard to reach spots.

The third and most important product that can help you keep your aquarium is an aquarium filter. Sponge filters are beneficial for aquariums that are can hold less than 10 gallons water and internal filters or hang on back filters are beneficial for aquariums that can hold up to 40 gallons water. External canister filters are recommended for larger aquariums since these filters are apt for cleaning larger aquariums with more fish. An under gravel filter is not recommended for large aquariums since large aquariums generally have a bigger fish load which can cause the plates of the under gravel filter to clog. Under gravel filters require regular maintenance and siphoning the gravel is an important part of maintaining an under gravel filter.

Glass cleaners are required to clean the external glass of the aquarium and care should be taken that the glass cleaning liquid does not mix with the aquarium water while cleaning since this can prove toxic to the fish.

Diffuser Aquarium

Help with a homemade co2 generator?

I recently just built a homeade co2 generator with yeast and sugar and about a 2liter apple juice bottle. I was wondering if I can stick a Aqua Euro Glass CO2 Diffuser at the end of airtube that enters the aquarium or would it be better to just have the airtube by itself in the tank?

You have to, otherwise practically all that CO2 will be wasted by rising straight to the surface. A diffuser that uses a ceramic plate works best in my experience, another good type are those closed units where the CO2 has no escape at all and is churned up by the water entering the diffuser from the filter. If you are using the ceramic diffuser or an airstone (use those that produce as fine bubbles as possible), position it below your filter outflow so that the bubbles are swept across your tank instead of reaching the surface. Also make sure your water surface is as little agitated as possible to reduce CO2 loss.

With CO2 injection, do note the effects if you have fish. CO2 can make pH drop rather a lot especially if your tank has little buffering. Since you can't switch off a DIY CO2 generator, you may need to run an air pump & airstone at night to reduce CO2 accumulation slightly and if your tank is heavily planted since plants consume oxygen at night instead of releasing it during the day.

My wife and I had kept tropical fish before, but we wanted to do something different. So we decided to reconstruct the fireplace - a typical modern affair with no real quality or style - into a 7 foot long 4 foot deep paradise for fish and eventually into an African Cichlid sanctuary...

Having got some real clever mathematician to work out that the weight of the water and tank was indeed supportable in our house (! - you'll never believe how many people don't check that out, especially those in apartments), we set about planning the aquarium with delight...

The tank was to stand on ornamental stone blocks which a local builder fixed in place. We needed to talk to a specialist tank supplier as the tank we were building was just a little out of the ordinary - and finally several weeks later the tank arrived.

The first trip to the store

My excitement was extreme as we made our way to the local store to get the bits and pieces we would need to start off:

• the gravel

• the filter and aerator

• the lighting

• the heater

• the cleaner (gravel vac).

When I got home I scrubbed the tank, and checked to make sure there were no leaks, then started to lay the gravel (having first washed the gravel through to make sure the dust was removed). At this time there was no need to be particular as water disturbs the gravel when it is first added. I then added about a third of a tank of water and started to mould the gravel to the way I wanted it. At this point I added some water purifiers and de-chlorinator to the tank.

Ok so then I put in the filter and aerator in, and also added the heater. These all remained switched off until I was finished in the tank. The rest of the water was then added - and I used a plastic tray floating on the surface to make sure there was not too much water movement which meant my sculpted gravel remained the way I wanted it.

Next all the equipment was turned on and left for two days.

The it was back down to the store for two more things:

• lots of plants and:

• CO2 diffuser to help with plant growth

The next day the plants were now neatly arranged and growing in my warm tank, so off down the shop again to get my first fish.

The first fish.

I love platies, the variety of colors is fantastic - but any live bearers are a good place to start. Mollies, swordtails, platies or guppys are ideal to get your water up to scratch. This is generally called cycling and is really the growth of good bacteria in your tank - which in turn break down the waste. So only add a few fish at first or the waste will kill the fish before the bacteria gets to work.

Five platies later and they are floating in their plastic bags on the surface of the tank. This was just to get the water temperatures equalised, and then over a period of a couple of minutes I let some of the tank water in the bag a couple of times. Finally out the five popped and made their way in the new tank.

Technically the fish waste is ammonia and needs to be broken down by bacteria into nitrite, and then later on into nitrate which is what helps the plants grow. This cycle needs to establish in your tank if you are to keep healthy and happy fish and generally this takes about 8 weeks to settle down. Even then my advice would be to add fish slowly til the are all established.

Eventually and with patience.

My wife and I eventually decided that tanganyika cichlids and malawi cichlids were our real tropical fish hobby (with some dwarf Kribs thrown in) and we managed to breed a few different types including labidochromis caeruleus or more commonly Canary cichlids, and also neolamprologus leleupi or the tanganyika yellow. At one point our tank was a huge splash of yellow delight.

In the evenings now we just switch the television off, cuddle up and watch the fish tank - and soothe our worries away.

Can someone explain what carbon does in an aquarium filter?

I am looking into various filter types for my aquarium. I have an undergravel/carbon floss filter on my 3 gallon aquarium (For my Betta) and its LOUD!

So I was just looking into other options and trying to get myself educated some. Just wondering what the carbon was for. Shoot, for that matter, what does an undergravel filter do? That part doesn't make much sense either.

Anyhow - if you know about any of these things, and would be willing to share it - that would be great. If you happen to know of a website that you would suggest to explain these things, that would be even better. The weird part about trying to do research about these sorts of things, is that you look at three different sources, and sometimes get 4 different explainations, ha ha.

Be well all
Thanks a bunch

Your doing great already by doing your research. I'll answer a couple of the questions for you, as far as Bettas, that's a little out of my area of knowledge, I have never kept them.

Carbon in the filter is there to remove any heavy metals in your water, it also removes odors and is good for removing toxic dissolved gasses such as hydrogen sulphide and methane, which result from imperfect water circulation. It acts as a catalyst to quickly convert dissolved chlorine gas to relatively harmless hydrogen chloride. It provides crystal clear water by removing minute suspended solids and colloids - those particles too small to be trapped by filter floss. It helps defend aquarium life on some occasions of accidental introduction of toxic substances such as pesticides, paint fumes, cigarette fumes and the like. It is also used to remove any unwanted medications that you had been using in the tank.

Undergravel filters can be a disputed topic, some like it, and others think that it is out dated and the new flters do a better job. The job of an undergravel filter is remove the fish waste from the surface of the gravel. It grows benifical bacteria underneath the plastic grate, because of this you do not clean underneath this because it will mess up you biological filtration. I really am not a fan of this type of filtration because I don't like the fact of taking all the waste and keeping it in the tank, you do need benifical bacteria, but you don't need to keep all the waste to do this. There are many other types of filtration out there that do just as good or better of a job than a undergravel filter and are not as delecate.

Here is a little info on bettas, sorry I don;t keep them, but good luck.
