A Giant Schnauzer is a highly spirited and outgoing breed, the dog is intelligent, loving and loyal which owners find to be very endearing. The breed is composed and makes an extremely efficient watchdog, hard-working and possessing of the Terrier temperament. The Giant Schnauzer is a breed which is dominant and needs a firm and diligent owner, one with experience handling dogs with this temperament.

The breed can be easy to train if you first earn their trust and respect, the dog responds to positive reinforcement and being supplied with treats when training. The dog must be trained by someone who has professional experience, if they are to reach their full potential and be a good family pet. Giant Schnauzers without proper training and socialization will not adapt well and make a suitable household pet.

When the dog is a puppy, they are dominant and stubborn, testing their owners time and again. To a Giant Schnauzer, it is up to the master to conform to their ideal standard of life. However, once the dog has received adequate professional training they will adapt and become a loving and loyal companion, growing attached to their family and being very protective.

The Giant Schnauzer is a breed that requires a high level of attention and will follow an owner around incessantly. There is no place off limits to the dog, it has an almost compulsive need to be in the same location as an owner at all times. The dog will smother an owner with attention and will not respect the owner's personal space at all. The dog will invade an owner's personal comfort zone and in doing so it keeps them well adjusted and gives them unadulterated joy. It is said that the breed is so in tune with an owner's feelings that can pick up on emotions through a person's facial expressions.

The Giant Schnauzer is an independent dog, true problem solvers and adept at figuring out the solution to a wide variety of problems or situations. There are stories in which an owner reports a Giant Schnauzer has learned to open the door to a cupboard or refrigerator to gain access to a tasty snack! Once the dog figures something out, it can be hard to stay a step ahead of them.

The dogs can become destructive if left alone for extended periods of time. Some Giant Schnauzers have been known to chew their way through an entire sofa if left alone for even a short time! Without proper supervision and stimulation, the dog could put the owner's possessions in serious jeopardy. So, do not leave anything in the dog's grasp that you hold sacred.

While the dog is engaging and amiable with an owner and family, the same cannot be said for when the dog encounters strangers. The dogs are generally reserved and leery around strangers, and are tremendously protective of their family. The breed does not like to feel threatened and can be imposing just because of size alone. The Giant Schnauzer is a breed that is truly unique, if you are a person that can adapt well to a dog of this nature, then this could be a well-suited breed for your family.

One of the greatest pitfalls I've discovered as an online business owner is getting stuck in my own comfort zone. In this comfort zone I'm quite capable, comfortable, stress-free, and quite frankly, caught in a rut. When I make the unconscious decision to "nest" in my own comfort zone, I usually become bored in a short period of time. It seems as though there's nothing more to do, no more great challenges to tackle, nothing to which I anticipate and look forward -- in other words, a slow yet painless death of my business.

When I feel the walls of this comfortable rut grow higher and higher, I think of a story shared by a life coach at a conference I attended several years ago. This coach was vacationing in Australia and had the opportunity to go bungee-jumping. This sport scared her greatly, so she spent the first 3 weeks of her visit coming up with all the reasons she didn't want to participate. Eventually she decided that she would regret this missed opportunity if she didn't rise to this challenge, and made a reservation to go on a jump. On the day of her jump, after she harnessed up, the two people in line in front of her backed out. She was now in a do or die position -- it was her turn to jump -- and she had to decide if she really wanted to do this.

Her bungee jumping coach came up to her and whispered, "You wouldn't be here if this wasn't what you wanted to do." She realized he was right, and she jumped. This defining moment in her life enables her to coach her clients to "jump" from where they are to where they want to be, even though it might be the scariest moment in their lives.

How would your life or business be different if you forced yourself out of your comfort zone? What is it that will make you move forward to get where you want to be? Here are 5 strategies that I use re-energize my online business when I get a bit too cozy in my comfort zone rut:

1. Read magazines/books/trade publications in other industries. I love to use this activity as a way to generate ideas for my business -- it stirs my creativity. Reading what others are successfully doing in their industries inspires to me determine if I can replicate their success in my own business or industry.

2. Contact someone who intimidates you. We all have these gurus in our industries that may scare us or intimidate us a bit because of their popularity. Or, perhaps their success scares you in some way. Determine what you'd like to learn from them, and request to speak with them by phone, email, or in-person for a short amount of time to ask them a few questions. If you don't personally know them, find someone who does and request an introduction. More than likely they'll agree, and you'll discover that they're just as human as you are.

3. Ask for honest feedback from a trusted colleague. Many times when we stay wrapped up in our businesses, it's hard to see where we need improvement or additions because we've become accustomed to how things are. Ask a trusted colleague for honest feedback about some aspect of your business. You can create your own mastermind group and ask for this on a regular basis, as I do.

4. Participate in an activity that flies in the face of your beliefs. Nothing stirs the pot like participating in some function where you're the minority -- where there are few others who believe what you believe or hold the values that you hold. Be patient, and permit those you meet to fully express their point of view. You never know -- you might actually learn something, or better yet, get an idea or inspiration to propel yourself forward.

5. Attend an event that scares you. I recently enrolled in a coaching program where the coach is speaking about several subjects that scare me, as these subjects are areas in which I need a great deal of improvement. However, I know that in order for me to succeed, I need to follow her model, as she's already manifested great success by using it. I'm still completely resisting several of the strategies (screaming loudly, in fact), but that's ok, as I know that when I'm truly ready, I'll quickly move forward to implementation.

Acknowledge your need for ongoing creativity and innovation as an online business owner. Sometimes the change you desire may be painless, while in other cases you might find yourself kicking and screaming all the way, yet willing to take the chance to move yourself forward. In my experience, the louder you resist, the more profound the change. Are you ready to jump?

Have you used Feliway? Does it work?

I have a 10-month-old cat who is absolutely bonkers. I know that all cats are a little crazy, especially young ones, but believe me when I say that this is the most feisty, active animal you'll ever meet. And she's also quite aggressive - I have two arms covered in scratches and bites to prove that. I've had her since she was 6 weeks old and she's been socialized with plenty of people and animals. I've never encouraged rough-housing behavior and tried to redirect to to toys. I'm pretty sure she's just a maniac by nature.

I've been considering getting the Feliway Comfort Zone diffuser to try to calm her down a little. Has anyone tried this before? Has it helped?

Your kitty sounds like a handful- kudos on doing everything you can. You're probably right- she IS probably just a maniac by nature, but luckily she's got you.

I've used Feliway diffuser with a huge amount of success. My cats could be in an advertisement for the product. It does take a few days for the full effect to be noticeable, but for me it seemed to start helping right away.

Good luck with your fiesty kitty.

Moving House with your Cat

Cats are creatures of habit and thrive in a consistent and familiar atmosphere. Moving house can be very stressful for cats once they are taken out of their comfort zone.

Prepare ahead of time to make moving house with your cat go as smoothly as possible.

The Journey

If you need to stay overnight at motels check ahead to find a pet friendly motel. Don't leave your cat in your vehicle if staying at a motel. Pet friendly motels can be researched on the Internet.

If you have a very nervous cat and your move entails a long car journey you may wish to discuss with your vet whether or not it would be advisable to give your cat a tranquiliser before the journey.

When traveling by car, your cat needs to be contained in a cat carrier which can be secured by a seatbelt. Make the carrier comfortable and include a favourite blanket or toy with a familiar smell.

If you are traveling a long distance to your new home pack a 'Cat Pack' The pack should contain food, food dishes, water dishes a litter tray and clean litter. You will also need plastic bags and a scoop for cat litter disposal. Don't forget a spoon or fork if you are taking canned food and some paper towels and wipes for any accidents. For nervous cats you might want to take a blanket or towel to cover the carrier.

When to move the cat

If you are moving a shorter distance to your new home and are making several journeys back and forth leave your cat until the last trip to bring it over to your new house. Your cat may be disturbed by the activity of furniture being moved out, but at least it is in familiar surroundings. Confine it to one room if possible with a familiar piece of furniture or it's own personal bed if it has one.

The new house - Settling in

On your cat's arrival at the new home try to make sure that the removalists have left and all furniture and packing box transportation is finished.

Make sure all doors and windows are securely closed. Remember to block chimneys too. Let him out of his carrier when it is quiet, not when there is still lots of activity associated with moving and unpacking going on. Make sure there are familiar things around him. Your furniture will have smells he will associate with home. Let him explore by himself and don't force him to do anything.

Some cats take to moving without much drama while others are very stressed and may hide under a bed for days. If your cat refuses to come out of a room or is hiding under a bed supply him with a litter tray and food and water in that room. Put a favourite blanket, toy or piece of furniture in the room to reassure him.

Feliway® sprays or diffusers can be used to settle your cat. Feliway® is a product which reproduces certain pacifying properties of cat facial pheromones.

Reassure your cat frequently by giving him plenty of attention. Lots of love and cuddles go a long way.

Sometimes your cat won't want to eat. Don't worry, he will eat when he is ready. Always have food and water available in familiar bowls. If your cat usually sleeps with you encourage him to do this in your new house. He will feel secure at night cuddled up with you in a bed he knows and with people he loves.

Don't allow the cat to go outside for a week or two or until he is very settled in his new environment. When you feel it is time to go outside it may be advisable to take him out on a harness, however if your cat is not used to a harness it could contribute to his stress levels. Supervise him for all outside visits at first and make sure he knows the way back into the house.

Collars and ID

Your cat may not usually wear a collar but it would be advisable before your move to get him used to wearing one. When you move attach an ID disk with a phone number. He should get used to wearing a collar BEFORE you move as putting a collar on after the move may add to his stress.

If your Cat is micro chipped

Don't forget to notify the Microchip Register of your new address and phone number. Do this a couple of weeks before you move and let them know your moving date. Ring the vet who implanted the microchip if you are unsure of who to contact. Usually you have notify the registration people in writing so make sure you organise things well in advance of your move.

Interstate and Overseas

If you are moving interstate or overseas and flying, then you will of course need to check out airline regulations for information on flights, container regulations freight costs etc. Thoroughly check quarantine requirements when traveling overseas. You will also need to check with your vet if any additional vaccinations are required.

By making plans ahead of the move you can make kitty's transition to her new home less stressful for you and for her.

Did I botch the new cat's adjustment to my home?

I got a new cat on Tuesday (it's now Thursday), showed it where the litter is, the food and water. I didn't completely leave it alone -- I touched it a couple times and looked for it when it was hiding. He's still hiding. Bought a Feliway Comfort Zone diffuser yesterday. Hasn't made a different yet.

He's a 6 yr old neutered male from a cattery. When he first got out of the carrier, I pet him a bit and he purrer. Now, nothing. He just looks miserable.

Advice?
Pardon the typos. I do know how to spell. Should I pet him even if doesn't purr when I do? I do have toys, strong catnip. He hasn't engaged in play yet.

He's scared because he's in a new environment, it has nothing to do with you. Your place looks, smells, and feels foreign to him - cats are sensory creatures. Some cats adjust more easily than others. Let him hide and do not pull him out of his hiding place! This will just make him more anxious and tell him that he can't be safe ANYWHERE in your house. He will start to come out little by little over the next week or so. When he does this, hold you hand out and talk to him in a calm voice - let him come to you. Don't make any jerky movements. Give him love and affection like you want to when he is brave enough to come to you. He will become acclimated and learn that your house (and you) are safe.

It was an excellent idea to get a Feliway diffuser. I swear by mine. It will take a week or two to really show results, though...so be patient. Be sure that it is in the room that your cat is hiding in.
