Across the country, thousands of birds will often surround an area for months at a time. The noise, smell and contamination of parks, fields and structures can create a huge problem. Clean-up efforts can be costly, not to mention repairing the damage pest birds can create. Unlike some cities in Europe where birds are tolerated as part of the urban landscape, USA bird control strategies seek to limit bird invasions. In fact, many on this side of the pond have sought to enforce bird control using BB guns, poisons or other lethal culling methods. These methods are frowned upon by professional bird control experts who say that they only offer temporary relief. For the minute these measures are put aside, birds will start to return en masse to wreak havoc once again.

Experts in USA bird control insist there are much more effective bird deterrent measures one can use to keep pest birds away from parks and property. Some of these devices and methods are discussed below.

Visual Bird Deterrents

These bird scare deterrents include reflective foil banners, reflective strips and blow-up balloons that make pest birds feel threatened and uncomfortable. Strips and banners will crackle in the wind and sparkle in the sunlight, which makes birds feel very nervous. Balloons emblazoned with large predator eyes are intimidating as well, convincing pest birds that predators are lurking and just waiting to attack. These devices are widely used by USA bird control experts because they are easy to install on gazebos, overhangs, patios, eaves, and other open areas where birds often nest and roost.

Bird Spiders

Creating alarm and distraction with flagellating arms that whip around in the breeze is the Bird Spider. These devices come with various length spider arms to deter birds of different sizes. Spiders are easy to set up and virtually maintenance free. They can be used on tabletops, awnings, patio covers, and canvas boat covers--just about any flat surface where pest birds like to land.

Bird Spikes

The ubiquitous Bird Spike, while appearing lethal at first glance, is actually quite humane and surprisingly effective as a bird deterrent. Bird spikes simply won't allow pest birds to land anywhere near them, which is why they have been widely used on rooftops, awnings, gutters, girders, signs and ledges--the list goes on and on. The bird spike is one of the most effective devices used by USA bird control professionals. The spiked strips come with steel or rigid U.V.-resistant unbreakable polycarbonate spikes. You can also get the Mega Spike (with long 7-inch spikes) to deter big birds like gulls, cormorants, vultures and raptors. Finally, there's the Gutter Spike, which is specially designed to keep birds out of rain gutters.

Bird Slope

Once they land, even birds can't defy gravity. Which is what makes Bird Slopes so effective as a bird deterrent. The steep-angled PVC panels keep pest birds from getting a solid footing, so any attempt to land is an almost comic act of "squirrel cage" antics that eventually forces birds to give up and leave. Bird Gels

Bird Netting

Effective USA Bird Control Strategies

It's no secret that people who are already sick are more vulnerable to contracting diseases. And one potentially unhealthful source of disease is bird waste. As a hospital administrator, you are no doubt aware of the problems pest birds can cause.  Many species of birds, including pigeons, starlings and sparrows, often gather to roost on a hospital's roof, under parking structures, in receiving bays and loading docks, and around exterior employee lunch and snack areas. Without bird control, you soon have a noisy, smelly and potentially dangerous problem on your hands.

Keep in mind that a single pigeon can excrete up to 25 pounds of droppings per year. The bacteria, fungal agents and ectoparasites in bird droppings and nesting materials have been known to carry any of 60 diseases--including histoplasmosis, encephalitis, salmonella, meningitis, and toxoplasmosis, even the West Nile virus.

No less harmful is bird fecal dust carried into hospitals through rooftop heating, ventilation and air-conditioning ducts. Birds often build nests around air handling equipment, ducts, compressors and other vented pathways. Dried by wind and sun, this disease-infested dust gets sucked into HVAC systems. The fine particles can quickly spread diseases throughout a hospital or medical center.

Hospital administrators should also be aware of the negative visual impact bird droppings, nests and other debris can have on a hospital's image. Finally, bird droppings can cause dangerous slip-and-fall hazards--a huge legal liability for any institution.

Today's Humane Bird Control Measures

Hospitals and healthcare centers are somewhat restricted in their use of pest bird control measures. They certainly can't use firearms, noise cannons or fireworks. And poisons present too much of a liability. Besides, federal, state and local wildlife protection ordinances forbid the use of lethal or harmful bird control measures. Fortunately, there are several highly effective bird proofing solutions currently available  that are safe, sane and humane.

Bird Spikes

The good thing about Bird Spikes is that they prevent many species of large birds from landing  in the first place. Suddenly, rooftops, ledges, signs, light fixtures and other elevated areas are off-limits to birds. Bird Spikes come in rows of spiked strips. And you can get them in either rigid U.V.-resistant unbreakable polycarbonate or high strength, durable stainless steel. The stainless steel spikes come in 3-, 5- and 8-inch widths; the plastic spikes (which cost slightly less) come in 3-, 5- and 7-inch widths. Plastic spikes are ideal for use near antenna arrays since they won't interfere with radiated RF energy. You can get bird spikes in a non-reflective metal finish or a variety of colors--like white, tan, gray, black, brown, brick red and crystal clear. There's also a no-gap spike that's easy to affix to curved surfaces.

If your hospital or healthcare center is being invaded by large birds like gulls, try the Mega Spike. Its 7-inch spikes made of marine grade stainless steel will make sure these birds get the point and leave. There's also the Gutter Spike, ideal for keeping large pest birds out of gutters or drains. Look for gutter spikes that have adjustable clamps at the base; these allow the spikes to be easily attached to the lip of a gutter.

Lastly, Birds Spikes look dangerous, but they are harmless to birds or people. They have even been approved by a number of humane groups worldwide--including the U.S. Humane Society and PICAS (Pigeon Control Advisory Service).

Sonic Bird Deterrents

Ideal for use in certain areas of a hospital or healthcare center, Typically, Sonic Bird Deterrents emit predator and distress calls that frighten pest birds but are basically just natural sounds that are not unpleasant to humans.  Some highly versatile sonic systems emit distress and predator calls for as many as 22 types of birds. The sounds are cycled every few minutes to convince pest birds that they best leave or risk being attacked. Sonic Bird Deterrents are an ideal bird control solution for deterring pigeons, crows, starlings, swallows, gulls, woodpeckers, sparrows, grackles, cormorants and many other birds.

Bird Netting

To keep pest birds out of certain specific areas--like eaves, overhangs, patios, and parking structure recesses--there's Bird Netting. This barrier bird control measure is available  in various cuts and mesh sizes. For large birds like pigeons or seagulls, use a 1-1/8-inch to 2-inch mesh size. Sparrows or starlings, on the other hand are best excluded using a 3/4-inch mesh net. The best bird repellent netting will meet ISO 1806 protocols, is U.V. stabilized, flame resistant and rot- and water-proof. In areas where electrical conductivity or radio frequency interference is a problem, non-conductive netting is often used. Also note that netting now comes in various colors-- including white, stone and black--to match a structure's color scheme.

Electric-Tracks

A great spot deterrent for ledges, rooflines, eaves, signs and most flat or curved surfaces, Electric Tracks impart a mild electrical shock when birds land on their surface. This is an ideal bird control device for use against a wide variety of pest birds--including pigeons, sparrows, gulls, starlings and crows. The best electric tracks feature a low-profile design that makes them almost invisible. The strips of electrified track are usually powered by an AC charger or solar charger. One manufacturer uses copper knitted wire mesh in a continuous "tube-in-tube" stocking design. This gives the track greater conductivity, strength and reliability. The copper mesh is resists corrosion and will stand up to alkali and acidic environments.

Bird Slope

These angled, slippery PVC panels known simply as Bird Slope, won't allow pest birds enough of a grip to land. After a few unsuccessful attempts, they just slide off like water off a goose. Bird slopes are easily installed, tucking unnoticeably into ledges, eaves, beams and other 90-degree areas pest birds often nest. The best panels are U.V. protected and sun and weather resistant. They deter a wide range of birds, including swallows, starlings, pigeons and seagulls. Some panels have a "snap-on" extender, which allows them to adapt more easily to wider ledges and coverage areas.

Bird Scare Deterrents

These inexpensive bird control devices make pest birds too nervous to nest. There's Flash tape, an iridescent material that shimmers and crackles in the sunlight and breeze to scare pest birds. And Bird Scare Balloons, which, emblazoned with lifelike reflective predator eyes, bob and weave menacingly in the breeze to make birds really uncomfortable.

Who would have thought that there will come a time when people will have to develop ways to control birds and consider them as pests? Birds are supposed to be adorable and important elements of the surroundings but if they are becoming a nuisance that could cause health risks and several other hazards, then there is a need for a bird control. I read a story in my language arts class and I have to write a summary on it but I can't remember the author. The book was called Bird and it was about a girl that ran away from home to find her step-father. She goes to his home town in Alabama and tells this boy about her age that she ran away from home. The boy lets her stay in his shed. The cover is an african-american girl sitting on a tree with her legs dangling. You can't see her face or anything. Birds like the highest points on buildings for predator and food lookout. When you take away the option to land there, they will usually move on and find another spot. Pigeons or seagulls can be deterred by using the spike products. Birds know they cannot land on such a surface. An outdoor sound deterrent also works well in this situation. These units are weatherproof, and can cover large areas. Other options would be the gel repellants. Applied to the roofline, birds do not like the “sticky sensation” on their feet, and will move on. Making the area uncomfortable will be your best bet. Because it can be difficult to access a roof area, calling in a authorized pest control company may be the best way to take care of birds on a roof. 2. Small Birds nesting under and eave or canopy

An eave is the perfect home for a bird. It provides shelter from the elements and predators. Scents in the nesting material and droppings will lead the bird back to their own nest. The most important step is to make sure all of the nesting material is cleaned away. Calling a pest control professional to help aid with the clean up and installation is your best bet. Bird droppings carry disease, and the proper protection is a must. Once the nests and droppings are cleaned up, there are several products that can help. The best way to keep smaller birds out of an eave is to block them out with netting. The netting acts as a physical barrier. Treating the beams that the birds are nesting on with the Bird Gel will also help. The Bird Chase Supersonic, an outdoor sound deterrent, is weatherproof and can be programmed for smaller birds. Predator calls signal the birds to move away from danger.

3. Pigeons on a Balcony or patio

Pigeons on a balcony or patio area are a very common problem. These areas provide shelter, and prime nesting locations. Because the birds land indiscriminately on these areas, it is important to choose something that will encompass the patio or balcony. Many people have success with stringing visual deterrents such as Mylar Flash Tape or Scare Eye Diverters. Both use visual scare tactics to frighten birds away. A sound deterrent can also help with this problem; they cover wide areas, and require no maintenance. For table tops and A.C. units, the Repeller, a solar powered unit that uses motion to scare birds, will also work.

4. Geese in yard, making a mess of grass area

Geese are large birds, which create large messes. Absolute Bird Control carries three different products to deter geese. There is a topical grass repellent called Migrate. It is made out of grape extract, and geese can't stand the taste. Applied to a lawn area, geese will realize they do not have a food source and move onto a better spot. 5. Woodpeckers destroying the side of a home

Woodpeckers peck into surfaces for a three reasons, to look for food, to attract a mate, and to create a nesting cavity. If woodpeckers have chosen your home to peck at, there are a few successful items you can use. Visual deterrents, such as the Diverters, Scare Eye Balloons, or Mylar Tape work well with a woodpecker problem. These three items have reflective surfaces which woodpeckers will avoid. The Bird Chase Super Sonic can be programmed for woodpeckers. The unit can cover between 1-5 acres, and is weatherproof.

6. Birds sitting on a window sill

Window sills provide a perch, and often shelter. Making the sill un-usable for birds is a good way to stop a bird from choosing your window. Products such as the Bird Spikes or Bird Gel work well in this situation. If you have birds flying into a window, or pecking at a window, we carry “window alerts”. 7. Seagulls or Pigeons making a mess on a boat or dock

9. Birds / Ducks in or near a pool

If you are having problems with birds around your pool you may want to consider the outdoor sound deterrent. This devices uses predator and distress calls to scare the birds. It is weatherproof and can be programmed to which bird you are having the problem with. Because you cannot really treat the pool with surface treatments (like spikes or gel) this may be your best option. 10. Small Birds nesting in a Garage / barn

Is trying to control your dogs barking getting a bit of a pain when all you want to do is get a decent sleep, leave your dog for 5 minutes, or have some respected guests round without having to get the earplugs out?

Training your dog to stop barking doesn’t have to be stressful, no one likes the loud barking sound coming from your dog, especially at 3 in the morning so lets go through some tips to control dog barking.

1. Need Attention huh?

Don’t give your dog the attention he wants from barking at you. if I was getting everything I wanted just for barking id probably do it too. You’ve got to teach your dog that barking won’t get him anywhere. If he wants something wait till he has stopped barking first.

2. Time to bark yet?

If your dog barks when you leave the house, 8 times out of 10 it will be because you’re making to much fuss over them when you leave. Dogs can’t fully grasp the idea of saying goodbye and may find it upsetting when you give them cuddles and play then go out the door and leave for 8 hours while you’re in work. For a dog that’s a good enough reason to bark and howl the house down for you to come back and play. Try leaving the house without any fuss, Leave the house without drawing any attention to yourself and the barking will lessen and stop.

3. Bored with nothing to do!

Dogs enjoy barking, it’s something they like to do. The barking sound might not be completely to your taste but dogs enjoy it and it’s a completely natural thing for them, so if your dog has nothing to do in his spare time then barking passes the time like nothing else. Keep your dog busy with lots of exciting toys if he seems to bark a lot at night, something to chew and play with when you’re not around will help comfort the dog and keep him from barking and waking the neighbours. With nothing else to do your dog will bark through the night until you wake up.

4. Visitor time

When visitors come round it’s an exciting time for your dog, new faces, new smells and more attention than usual. This often causes dogs to bark, they want all the attention they can get in the form of cuddles and play time. You can solve this by using the ‘Stop’ command, teach him this and praise him when he listens to you and you should have no more problems with your over excited dog.

5. Be Consistent

Unfamiliarity can trigger your dogs barking off a lot of the time so keep constant with the times he barks most, for a lot of dog owners this is at night time. Decide where your dog or puppy sleeps. If one night your dog is out in the cold and the next he’s all snug and warm in bed with you or your kids you can guarantee he won’t want to be back out in the cold getting no attention from anyone again. Stick to consistency with your dog and you won’t go far wrong, otherwise you may be in for another sleepless night shouting at your dog.

This command is a very useful command and is relatively easy to teach your dog. After learning the sit command, this command should be a breeze for you. Getting your dog to be able to lie down and wait while you go into a shop or walk away is a very useful command and is also key to gaining trust and a good relationship with your dog.

This command should be firstly taught indoors or in a comfortable place your dog is used to learning and doing commands for you, and then as time goes on and your dog gets better at achieving success with the command, you should take it into a public place with lots of interests and new smells to distract them. This should test the strength and commitment your dog has for the down command.

To start, make sure your dog is in the mood for training and preferably in a hungry and wanting mood where they will be more than happy to please you if it means they get a treat, just before meal times is generally a good time for training and will help the progress of your dog.

When you are ready to begin and you have your dogs treats to-hand, start by getting your dog to sit for you, followed by a reward .Then let your dog know you have another treat in your hand for him and slowly lower it in front of him, going lower and lower, as the treat gets lowered closer to the ground your dog will be forced into the down position with their belly firmly on the floor and paws ahead of them.

As soon as your dogs belly touches the floor, the command ‘down’ should be said and you should reward them with praise, encouragement and the treat you used. This makes the dog associate the command with the action and the action with a reward to help your dog training process.

If your dog steps out of line during the training exercise, gently punish them accordingly. After you have learnt this command and you now think you’re ready for the next step, try taking your dog into a distracting place or area, or playing with their ball around them. When you have your dog under control at all times using the down command it is time to move on to more advanced dog training and you have now got a new trick to show your friends and family.

im not sure what fill aquarium kits is. but from the choices above il go with python. you can just always scrape your tank every once in while to remove build-up and so. python comes in 10, 25, 50, even a 100 feet. make sure you get the right one that will reach your faucet to your tank.

and may i suggest another thing. you can just always get a right size hose from home depot or lowes and just let gravity be your pump....python waste so much water when "vacuming" your tank. if you need more info to feel free to PM me

The most effective dog bark control collar?

I need to get my pomeranian chihuahua a bark control collar. He is out of control and I don't want to get kicked out of my apartment because of him. What is an effective collar and/or method to use?

I have tried several brands of bark control collars and the only brand I would ever buy again is Tri Tronics. The brands that didn't last for me are Innotek, DT Systems, PetSafe, and Dogtra. None of them lasted a year. The Tri Tronics product is still reliable after three years.

Correcting Your Dog

You have to correct your dog the right way or you will do more harm than good. We use corrections to change a dog's behavior. A correction needs to communicate to your dog it has not done what you wished, by learning what not to do, dogs will quickly learn the behaviors we need to teach them to fit into our daily life.

A correction combines physical or (preferably) emotional pain with the word "NO." The preferred method of correcting your dog is with a squirt bottle: a quick squirt to the face and a loud firm "NO." It is important you squirt the dog in the face or they will not even notice. With many dogs you will want to add a small amount of mouthwash or vinegar to the water in the squirt bottle (just a small amount) so the water is a little more of a deterrent. You should only add a teaspoon for a whole squirt bottle and even less for smaller squirt guns.

It is very important to recognize the difference between correction and punishment. Punishment has nothing to do with teaching your dog proper behavior and everything to do with you venting your anger. Trying to correct a dog for instance for an 'accident' in the house you find even a couple minutes later must be avoided. The dog has long forgotten his transgression and correction (punishment) now will only confuse the dog and make it more anxious and stressed, even more prone to future accidents.

Since timing is so crucial you should have a squirt bottle on your belt or in the immediate vicinity when training a puppy.

Just as important as the correction is the praise immediately following. You have to praise your dog when it has stopped doing the undesirable behavior immediately so it associates your praise with the correct behavior.

For instance, if your dog is barking too much and you correct it, as soon as you shoot your squirt bottle and the dog stops barking, you immediately offer your praise, "Good Quiet, Good Boy!"

A couple more ideas for non-physical corrections are to ignore the dog, refraining from eye contact and to make a loud sound to startle the dog. This can be a stomp of the foot, a snap of the fingers or if you have a few minutes to kill you can make a very effective tool by dropping a hand full of pennies in a can or a water bottle. Shaking that can is now guaranteed to stop your dog from whatever it was doing.

In summary the key aspects to remember are to properly time your correction (you have to catch the dog in the act) and to give praise as soon as the dog stops the unwanted behavior.

The no bark collars that are cheap - Don't work. The ones that don't use electric stimulation - Don't work. Gimmicks - Don't work. There's no such thing on the planet as a shock collar. There are electric collars, and there are electric no-bark collars. Both are GREAT tools when used correctly by somebody with a brain and common sense and are only inhumane when used by idiots.
A quality no-bark collar is never inhumane because it adjusts the level of correction to suit your dog. In other words the correction (electric stim) intensity is increased each time the dog barks. So it starts off as barely noticeable, and works it's way up, when it's uncomfortable enough for the dog to stop, it has found the perfect correction for your particular dog, not too soft, not too hard. Too soft a correction = ineffective. Too hard of a correction = could damage your dog's nerves/character. BUT quality no-bark collars are idiot proof, charge it, put it on the dog at times when barking would be a problem, tada.
With electric training collars the human needs training on how to use it properly because they're not idiot proof and most people who think they can do it on their own don't have enough common sense to do it...and they end up damaging their dog's character and guess what? The bunny huggers and pretend trainers blame it on the electric collar and not the moron who was holding the remote. A tool is only as good as the person wielding it.

There are some dogs that rarely make a sound, and then there are dogs that keep on barking loudly every time. Don't get it wrong; having dogs bark is far from irritating. It only becomes a pain to listen when they bark and continue to do so for no apparent reason. Though the first solution that comes to mind is to purchase a bark control device, one must understand that telling them to shut up will not be effective on its own. It is important to couple these devices with the appropriate training.

Having to train a dog to stop barking without any device is pretty challenging. Oftentimes it is an untrained dog that makes the loudest noise. If your dog is still untrained, you better start with simple commands like sit and stay. Rewarding them for every successful command is necessary. This will let the dogs focus their attention to you as they await your command. Another way to reduce their barking is to engage them in other activities such as playing or running. The less idle they become, the lesser the barking they will make. If the barking still continues, then that is the time to get bark control equipment.

Ultrasonic Bark Control

First, let's focus on ultrasound devices. These devices stop a dog's barking using a high-pitched sound only he could hear: ultrasound frequency. An example is the ultrasonic remote trainer. This is ideal for dogs whose barking is uncontrollable but can also work with normal ones during training.

There are two buttons: one giving a positive sound while another giving a negative sound. It has a 30-feet range and can be used both indoors and outdoors.

If a dog keeps on barking on a particular spot outside your house, it will not just be you who will have problems but your neighbors as well. In such a case, you can use an outside bark control device. Aside from having an ultrasound player, it also has an audio sensor (focused primarily on dog barks). When the dog makes his first bark, the sensor detects and automatically turns the ultrasound on. This would keep the dog from barking again, thinking that it caused the disrupting high-pitched sound. The sensors can detect a bark and plays the corresponding ultrasonic tone up to 50 feet.

When inside the house, you can use the similar indoor bark control device. It has similar features as the one you would use outside, but it detects and makes ultrasound with a range of 30 feet, since the place is smaller. This is ideal for kitchens or living rooms where the pets usually stay. It also has a manual switch for the ultrasound if you wish to get the attention of your dog whose behavior has become too rowdy.

Static Correction

For extreme cases, you can fit a special bark control collar to a noisy dog. The device often has the same sensor, but it activates a mild static correction instead of ultrasound. It does the same thing without using too much power. Note that the device is still very safe to use for dogs and will only give temporary discomfort.

"Spot On" Flea & Tick Control for dogs. Safe?

OK, all retailers (on-line and large stores) sell this stuff. It is 1/5 the cost of other flea control products, and yes it claims to kill ticks, mosquitoes, EVERYTHING! Yeah, I guess because the active ingredient (Permethrin) KILLS everything. OK, Farnam is a respected seller of ag products (I use their stuff on cows, horses, etc.) But what are the controversies with this dog product? Safe or Not?

The active ingredient in Sevin is carbaryl. Sevin is the trade name for the product whereas carbaryl is the chemical name of the ingredient that does the dirty work. Sevin is also used as a flea/ant killer, but under a different name, like First Choice or another name. A really good example is imidacloprid. Imidacloprid kills fleas, ticks, grubs, mole crickets, Japanese beetles, etc. If you have dogs and cats, you know it as Advantage. It is also under the trade names of Premise, Merit, Admire and Marathon. All of these products contain imidaclporid.
The main difference between Advantage, and say, Merit, is the % active ingredient in the product. The amount of imidacloprid in Advantage is a great deal smaller than what is in Merit. This is so pets are kept safe. This is probably way too much information, but sometimes I get carried away.
As far as killing the ants, you should find out what kind they are. Some ants are attracted to sugar, while others are not. Usually an ant bait will work. You can pick these up at a local home improvement store. All you have to do is sprinkle it around the perimeter of your home, and they will pick it up. Also try to find out what they're doing or where they're going. If you remove what it is that is attracting them, they shouldn't be a problem anymore!

If you want your man to adore you again, you first need to earn back his respect. The next time he acts in a discourteous manner, call him on it and let him know you expect to be treated with respect and love and that you will settle for nothing less. No need to corner him or make him feel defensive: just lay down the law with him and see where he stands.

The pathways of the heart are surely difficult terrain to navigate. While you cannot make your man love you if that love is gone, there are proven ways to fan the flame of his love if it has dwindled of late. Do yourself a favor and give your relationship the attention it deserves. Then, whether the relationship is for forever or is doomed to end soon, at least you will know and either way and get on with your life.
