Travel dog crate?

I have a cage like dog crate that I use for my dog at home. I want to buy one that I can use for travel or when my pup is with my in-laws being sitted. Would one of those soft ones be OK? Or is it worth it to invest in the hard plastic ones?
My dog is a Boxer, she is still a pup but she will be about 60lbs

I think she will chew the soft ones. Get a hard plastic one, they're only about $50 at Walmart.

One of the many fine dog crates on the market can be the best friend you and your pet will ever have. While it may seem like some sort of "cage" to you and I, your animal will regard it as his own personal indoor dog house, a security blanket of sorts where he can go to sleep or escape. Travel models have the added advantage of providing the comfort of home for your animal while in strange or different surroundings.

They come in many different styles, shapes and sizes. A general rule of thumb about dog crates are that they should only be big enough for your pet to stand, turn around and lie down easily. Ideally, it will be just large enough for the animal to sleep on his side, with his legs stretched out. If buying a travel model, measure your vehicle first to make sure it will fit, or you could be in for a nasty surprise!

While this might seem a tad steep, keep in mind that it will most likely last for your pet's entire life, and even beyond. This can often be a difficult purchase for those with growing puppies. If it's within your budget, you might want to check out the types that include dividers, so it can grow along with your puppy as time goes by.

How do I use the crate to train my dog?

It is important a puppy to be trained to use a crate in order to save time and effort in cleaning up after them while they are still being potty trained.
Believe it or not, a puppy is genetically pre-disposed to needing a den.

Though you may have furniture that a puppy likes to lay on, they really need something that is completely enclosed, giving them a sense of security and comfort. Isolated rooms in your house are simply too big for puppies, and can leave them nervous, anxious, and even destructive.

Once your pup is housebroken, then you should leave the crate open for them for the entire day. You will likely find that that your puppy will willingly go into the crate to take a nap at various points in the day. When you have to leave for awhile, you can put the dog in the crate, but not for more then four hours at a time.

Remember, even though we as human beings don't wish to be placed in a tiny area where you only have enough room to turn around, you must keep in mind that dogs are not like people. Their ancestors would find safety, shelter, and comfort in their dens. Dogs today find solace and safety inside their crates in the same manner.

Question about crate training and mats in the crate?

I am getting ready to adopt a four month old pug puppy. I have reserached and spoken with many dog owners about the benefit of crate training. I have purchased a standard crate that is the appropriate size for the pup. My only concern is that it doesn't have a floor (it's a cage looking crate, not the carrier version) and so I thought I was supposed to buy a mat to put in it, but I was told not to put anything in it because the puppy will get to hot. Should the crate have some padding in it or none at all? I want the puppy to find it comfortable, but pugs especially are sensitive to temperatures. Do I put a mat in there or not?

Use a crate pan, found at most decent pet stores. It looks like a large plastic cookie sheet.

Should you be planning a trip to a mosquito-infested area, you will probably take steps to protect yourself from malaria, the virus that is carried by infected mosquitoes. For humans, malaria, West Nile virus, and encephalitis are diseases that a single bite from a carrier mosquito can transfer into our system. However, you should also worry about the diseases that mosquitoes can give to your cat or dog-such as heartworm, a parasitic worm that eventually clogs your pet's heart and arteries.

Heartworm disease is actually caused by a roundworm that spends part of its life cycle floating in the right ventricle and connecting blood vessels in its host. Although its preferred host is a dog, heartworms also reside in cats and other wild animals, such as coyotes and foxes. When your pet is bitten by a mosquito carrying the heartworm parasite, if the worm is transferred to the animal, it has a heartworm infection. However, it is not until the infection as grown into an infestation that the host will show the detrimental effects of heartworm disease.

To fully understand how this parasite harms your pet, let us examine the life cycle of a heartworm. In a host, a female heartworm lays eggs that give rise to microfilariae. These microfilariae float around the bloodstream of their host until a mosquito punctures a blood vessel and unknowingly ingests its meal of both blood and baby heartworms. In the body of the mosquito, the heartworm eggs develop into larvae in about two weeks. When the mosquito bites its next victim, the larvae travel into the bloodstream of the bitten animal. In sixth months, the larvae turn into full-blown heartworms.

Heartworms are not like tapeworms, where for the most part a bit a medication can rid your pet of its problem. Heartworms can actually live up to seven years in your animal's body. However, once a female worm lays its eggs in your pet, the microfilariae cannot grow into more harmful parasites without undergoing its larval stage in a mosquito.

Once the larvae mature into adult worms, it might take awhile for your pet to show signs of infection. This is because they accumulate and grow fairly slowly, as repeated bites from carrier mosquitoes can transfer even more larvae into your pet. As the infestation grows, your dog may cough and become increasingly more lethargic. Reduced appetite, and therefore weight loss, can also be a sign of infection. Cats tend to gag or vomit and have difficulty breathing. They also might lose weight like dogs.

Unfortunately, there is no way to treat heartworm in cats. However, as long as it is caught fairly early, your dog can be fully cured of its disease. After detected by a blood test, x-ray, or ultrasound, a series of injections of an adulticide can save your dog. Before getting to this point, though, you can actually work to prevent heartworm infections in your pets by giving them vet-approved products like monthly pills.

Crate Training?

We have moved into a new house and from what I've heard, crate training is awesome, making the dog feel secure.

It is never to late to crate train. I like the plastic crates because they are den-like and cozy for the dog. Wire ones are great for travel, so they are more versatile.

Line the crate with towels or blankets for comfort.

Crate training is wonderful. It gives your dog a place of her own, where she can feel secure and relax, as well as make life easier on everyone.

Start slowly. Bring the crate home, put in the blankets/towels and some treats. Keep the door open, and praise/treat her when she shows interest in the crate. If you get a kong and stuff it, you can put that in there to lure her in.

Don't keep her in it long to begin with! And do not take her out while she whines/barks or makes a fuss. This will encourage that behaviour and you will never have peace and quiet! Take her out while she is quiet, and do not make a big fuss out of putting her in/taking her out of the crate. Keep it calm and uneventful.

Freezing a stuffed kong and putting it in the crate will keep her busy while she is in it. Also, make sure you take her for a good walk prior to putting her in their for a lengthy amount of time.

Also, putting an article of clothing that smells like you in the crate can help her adjust.
