Every time you walk through the door your dog is so happy to see you that he wags his tail and virtually smiles at you. How can you show you're pet how much they mean to you? Well, one way is to think about that smile for your pet. Did you know that your dog's diet can influence their oral health and teeth?

Humans need to brush and floss their teeth regularly to keep their teeth, tongue, and gums in good condition. Research has recently shown a link between good oral health in humans and a lower risk of heart disease. If good oral health can have such a profound affect on people, then it only makes sense to consider the impact it can have on man's best friend.

It is important to brush your dog's teeth frequently to keep plaque and tartar from becoming an issue. Even wiping his gums with a clean, damp cloth can be beneficial.

Your dog's diet also plays a role in your pet's oral health. Do you typically feed your dog canned or dry dog food? What kind of treats and toys do you provide for your pet? All of these things can affect the likelihood of trouble with your pet's teeth.

When your dog's diet is nutritionally sound, containing essential vitamins, nutrients, and enzymes, your pet's oral health will be at its very best. Feeding dry dog food rather than a moist canned variety is best for your dog. The tiny kibbles' hard surface rubs against the teeth to remove and reduce plaque. The simple act of moistening the dry dog food with water or gravy eliminates this property from dry dog food.

The treats you give your pet are part of your dog's diet just like snacks are part of a person's diet. As humans, we tend to want to overlook our snacking habits, so it can be easy to overlook the treats you give your dog. This is not a good idea. Carefully consider any and all items your dog will consume.

Do you give your dog bones, rawhides, jerky treats, or dog biscuits? Maybe your pet prefers greenies or corn starch chews. You may not have considered it, but tossing Spot a rawhide chew is like giving him a candy bar. The rawhide, for example, contains calories and is often provided between meals.

Many of the treats and snacks you provide in your dog's diet can be just empty wasted calories. Some treats, alternatively, provide excellent opportunity to improve their oral health and teeth. Greenies, rawhides, bones, and hard dog biscuits all help to keep tartar at bay. The softer snacks, such as jerky treats, do not provide much relief from plaque. The healthy treat, on occasion, will also prevent your dog from having bad breath.

Your dog's diet must be healthy to ensure good oral health. Dry dog food is best whenever possible. Don't forget to select treats for your pet that will enhance your dog's diet. Consciously monitoring your dog's diet will positively influence your best friend's teeth and oral health.

Dogs may not have a clear sense of ownership, but they certainly do not want to voluntarily relinquish whatever they happen to have in their mouths, especially if it is edible. Attempting to remove a dog's full bowl of food as he is eating is a death defying stunt for many dog owners. Removing a dangerous object from a dog's mouth can be a challenge to the owner of a dog that is not trained to release his possessions upon command. When not properly trained, a normally loveable and trustworthy animal can become dangerously aggressive when he senses that a current possession is at risk of being taken.

Early training, in the puppy phase, can be as simple as teaching the dog to fetch, return, and release. The puppy sees it as a game and becomes used to dropping the object or having it gently removed from his mouth, followed by a pat and mild praise. Eventually, by using the same tone of voice and command, the puppy will relinquish other objects that he has in his mouth.

Another great way to gain control over the dog's possessive tendency is to teach the dog to sit and not touch an object or his food until he is given the "OK" command.

Of course, as with any training regimen, it is easier if begun when the dog is a puppy, but remedial training to get your dog to drop or back away from bones, toys, and food can be effective with persistence and patience. The dog must be taught to understand that nothing is his to keep if you decide to take it from him. It would not be advisable to begin training by trying to remove a tasty morsel from the dog's mouth. The prudent approach would be to let the dog take an object that he has little interest in into his mouth and then take it back. A stick, for example, or a new toy. Start the training by putting the dog on his leash. Let him take the stick or toy into his mouth, then offer him a small treat to let it go while commanding him to "give." The dog will most certainly relinquish the toy for the treat.

If for some reason he doesn't relinquish it, shake him gently by pulling on the leash while repeating the "give" command. If he still does not release it, gently reach for the toy to remove it. If he growls, shake him through the leash. Don't cavalierly dismiss the growl; a growling dog is getting ready to bite. Eventually he will give it up. When he does, give him a treat and praise him profusely. Perform this training exercise repeatedly for no more that fifteen minutes per session. Over time, introduce items that he is likely to be more attached to such as his favorite toy, until you have finally been able to get him to drop a dog bone or rawhide treat.

Eventually, as owner, you will find it easier to maintain control over what your dog possesses. Regardless, however, of how well you manage to train your dog, never forget that the dog is an animal and can revert easily to aggressive protective behavior. Never leave children alone around any dog at feeding time. The dog may recognize your authority in removing possessions, but will not recognize that authority from a child that is inadvertently threatening his possession.

What are the best kind of bones to give your dog for chewing and keeping there teeth clean.?

What is better for your dog, sterilized bones that your can buy at Pet Smart, or a raw knuckle bone from the butcher.

If you get a raw bone is it better to boil it for several minutes before you give it to the dog or let her chew on it raw?

I'm wondering if cooked or sterilized bones are harder on the teeth? Could they wear down the dogs teeth?

Also I'm concerned that the sterilized bones have chemicals in them since they look so white.

I have been giving my dog Nylabones and wonder if it would be better to just stick with that kind of bone?

I have been raising and training dogs for over five years now. All of my dogs have enjoyed treated cow bones. These bones have not been bleached , but have been slow heated to remove any harmful bacteria. If those are to hard for you dog you can use a variety of compost bone. Which include Nylabones, corn starch bones, etc. Please avoid bones made with rawhide. these bones can become gummy and get stuck in your dogs throat which causes choking. also these bones do not break down so they are hard to digest. I have also had problem with greenes in small dogs and puppies. These bones I found out do not break down easily in dogs stomachs causing blockage. They also break off in large pieces which has caused choking in one of my puppies. Over all the safest bone is the kind you are already using or an all natural slow heat beef bone. No pork of Chicken. these bones splitter and cause problems. I hope this helps.
