Dog Destructive Chewing: Stopping Your Dog From Chewing Everything

August 8th, 2009 admin No comments

Dog destructive chewing is variable for every dog. You have some dogs that love to chew everything, yet there are other dogs who do not enjoy chewing.

Listed below are three reasons why some dogs chew:

- Dogs generally have a natural desire to chew, especially if it is something really good like a bone. However, some dogs will chew on anything, like pencils, shoes and rocks!

- Chewing provides relief for anxious or nervous dogs

- Dogs who do not get enough exercise often chew to get rid of nervous energy

So how do you stop destructive chewing?

1. Make sure that you dog-proof your home just like you would when a new baby is in the home. Put your things away, keep food put up and take care in making sure there are no temptations for your doggie.

2. Refrain from giving your dog your old personal items to chew on as this only serves to confuse the dog. They will not understand what is off limits.

3. Provide your dog with alternatives. Buy her bones, toys and other dog friendly items to take the place of your prized possessions.

4. Be sure you are spending time watching over your dog so that you can correct any bad behavior while it is happening.

5. Come up with a sound (clapping, for example) that you can use when you catch your dog chewing on something bad. Do not spank or yell, as this will just scare the dog and lose the lesson of the moment. Instead, have a spray bottle with water or clap to let the dog know that this is a wrong action.

Above all, be patient and love your dog. You can take care of dog destructive chewing if you spend time doing the right things. Dog destructive chewing can be so irritating! I really loved reading about the "5 Myths of Dog Training" at this website: DOG TRAINING CHEWING. And it was FREE!

Excessive Dog Barking – What You Can Do to Help Your Dog

July 27th, 2009 admin No comments

First, if your dog barks because it is bored, it needs some exercise. Many dogs will need lots of exercise. Take your time to play with your dog and give it the attention it needs. Dogs that are constantly outside are especially prone to feeling lonely and bored. Give your dog chewing toys to keep it busy. You must also interact with your dog as often as possible. This will also alleviate its loneliness and boredom.

Maybe you should consider getting a second dog. Some dogs need company. Sometimes it is enough if you just let it meet other dogs. The company of another dog can be a valuable help to stop excessive dog barking. Some dogs barks because they want to communicate with other dogs.

However, perhaps the best way to stop it, is to train your dog. You can train it to avoid excessive barking, you'll need to train your dog. Dogs, like people, learn through association. If your dog can attract your attention through barking, it will do it as often as possible. You are actually rewarding it. Note that there are "good" barking, that has to be rewarded and "bad" barking, that has to be corrected.

You must reward your dog for this kind of barking, since it is needed and welcome. Pet it for a minute or so. Let the dog know this kind of barking is allowed. Believe me, dogs will know what kinds of barking are desirable and what are not, if they get the proper feedback.

Every time your dog barks without reason, you have to tell it to stop this behaviour. To reduce excessive dog barking, shake your hand in front of your dog. At the same time, simply say "no" in a very firm voice. Do not yell at your dog. And do not hit your dog either, this turns out counter productive for his behaviour. This could make him aggressive, which is the last thing you want. When the barking stops, reward your dog with praise. If it remains quiet for a minute or more, you can repeat the praise

Training a dog in general can be a bit of a mine field. There is so much to take in, what I have covered above just scratches the surface. To train a dog properly you really need to have some structure around what you do. There are many things that you need to take into consideration, such as exercise, diet, discipline, behavioural issues to name a few. I did a lot of research and tried lots of different things.

My dog Sammy is a Border Collie and had various behavioural problems, I tried a variety of so called dog training methods, such as different types of dog collars, books, diets etc. Some of these things did help, but the reality of it all was I had no structure or guidance from anyone to help me. Eventually I found my and now I understand why Sammy barks, he knows when its right to bark and when its not. Things are so much better for everyone, including the neighbours!!

Are Pugs A Good Choice For Families With Small Children

July 11th, 2009 admin No comments

No family feels complete without a dog, but what do your children need to know to make certain that having a Pug, will be the best pet for your family? Children need to learn to make sure the dog has plenty of food and fresh water on a daily basis, receives adequate exercise, gets let outside at regular intervals, is treated kindly and does not have access to things they can chew up and ingest. This article is going to explain in detail how your children can learn to mix well with a Pug.

Water and Food:

Every dog needs access to fresh food and water on a daily basis, once your child has learned this, they can help take care of the family pet. Teaching children that a dog needs the right nutrition to grow big and strong, is a great way to teach them the importance of the dogs diet. This talk can be brought up when you are explaining why its important for children to eat their vegetables.

Getting Enough Exercise:

Another factor in keeping your Pug happy and healthy is to make sure he or she gets enough exercise. A dog needs to have regular exercise to help them stay fit and maintain a healthy lifestyle. A game of fetch with a ball or Frisbee is a classic, and a good way to get those little feet moving. Explain to your children that just like a human being, mans best friend needs to stay in shape too.

Outside Breaks:

This is a big part of the responsibility of owning a dog and will not go unnoticed if a someone lets it slide. Explain to children that it is important the dog is let outside to go to the bathroom and it will help them gain a sense of responsibility. A child will come to notice that some things have to be done consistently, and cannot be put off while picking up another skill that will assist them in becoming more independent when it comes to taking care of the family dog.

Playing Nicely:

You need to be extremely gentle with your pets because you do not have any idea how the dog is going to respond, especially a new environment. You should talk to your children about playing nicely and then illustrate this behavior to them. Children are natural mimics and once you show them how you treat a Pug, they will learn how to be gentle from you.

Chewy Dog Toys:

This is a great chance for children to learn about picking up their toys. Pugs cannot always tell the difference between a new chew toy and a childs toy. An honest and frank talk with the children about what can happen when they leave their toys laying around might help you keep the house a bit more tidy, if only because the children do not want the dog chewing up their favorite toys.

The sooner a child learns about the responsibility that comes along with owning a dog, the better the situation will be. They must learn to feed the dog and give it water every day, take the dog for a walk, let it outside regularly, give it adequate attention and provide it with access to toys that are safe to chew on. Teaching children all about these responsibilities will allow them to learn a lot from owning a Pug.

How To Stop Your Dog From Chewing

July 6th, 2009 admin No comments

Destructive chewing is a very common problem that all dog owners face at some point. IT is important to understand that in dogs, chewing is completely natural, especially in puppies or dogs still teething.

Though this is completly normal, it becomes a problem when your dog chews on dangerous or expensive items. Also chewing can be hazardous to your dog, if a piece of chewed material gets suck in your dogs throat, it could suffocate and die.

Dogs Chew for many different reasons, and if you want to stop dog chewing, it is important to identify what is triggering this behavior.

Solving Dog Chewing problems

* First of all "prevention is better than the cure" having a dog requires responsibility, don't leave valuable items laying around so that your dog can get to them, unless your dog has proper obedience training.
* Chewing is natural for dogs, so provide your dogs with tasty chew toys, condition your dog to understand that if he needs to chew, that is what he chews on. Fill his chew toy with his favorite treats and reward him for chewing on it.

* Take your dog out to play, go on a walk, jog, dog park or a dog beach, give him lots of exercise, play games with him fetch, catch obedience training so that he doesn't have so much energy bottled up inside.

* Until your dog is properly obedience trained, keep him in a confined area, a kennel, dog crate, or you can just section off a corner of your house or yard.

Why does my dog chew her puppies ears?

The dog is about 4 years old, we got a new puppy about a year or so ago and while it was a puppy the first dog chewed on its ears, now the first dog has puppies of it own, it keeps her puppies ears wet 24-7, she chews their ears constantly, but it don't hurt them because they don't act like it does, but i was just wondering if anybody knows why she does it......
HOW THE HELL DO CHEWING ON EARS SHOWING LOVE??

PEOPLE READ THE QUESTION! THIS IS A LONG TERM PROBLEM. HE IS SAYING "CHEWING" NOT LICKING!

Sounds like your dog has a tick/habit, ticks are common in dogs packs ranging in 3 or less. A dog that is raised in a large pack of dogs (even domestic) would be corrected on the spot for bad behavior.

**If your dog has a habit of chewing you want to cure it by try bitter apple; it makes chewing less appetizing. Just apply a diluted amount to one ear or the puppies. Or just one and singling it out with the mother, you don't want the puppies to be afraid of each other; because they taste bad:) good luck

Bitter Apple can be purchased at almost any pet store, in the training section. Or you can make you own by diluting apple cider vinegar...the better quality of vinegar counts. cheap brands will leave a bad smell, while quality brands will wash off/out when use is no longer needed.

Good Luck

Dog Chew Bones, The Good And The Bad

When it comes to giving your dog a bone to chew on, the main attitudes are either for or against the action, because of all the different benefits, or problems that come from dogs gnawing away on a bone. On the one hand, many people fully believe in the benefits, as well as the fact that dogs have been chewing bones... since there were dogs. On the other hand, others argrue that now that more people are aware of what kind of damage animal bones can inflict on a dog's internal digestive system, the idea of giving your dog a bone is practically sadistic. One view is more extreme than the other, and there are happy mediums that can be reached here, somewhere in the middle. First we'll go over the benefits, then the issues, and finally, which bones should be selected based on facts, rather than speculation.

Benefits

- Bones give your dogs something to chew on that isn't your new shoes, the curtains, or the garbage; it's simple, and effective on the doggy to-do list. A chew bone is a dog's healthy alternative to your furniture, clothing, or other household items. If he or she has a designated chewy, then the chances of him or her going for the couch legs are much slimmer.

- Contrary to rumours, bones actually do improve dental health. Chewing a bone scrapes away tartar and plaque buildup, which fights the growth of bacteria, which in turns prevents gum disease and bad breath. It will also improve the whiteness of their teeth.

- Puppies that are teething especially appreciate having a bone to chew because it eases the pain of new teeth coming in, just like a baby chews on a cold teething ring. Give your puppy the same treatment by keeping his bone in the refrigerator when he's not after it.

Problems

- Some people are concerned with whether or not a dog's teeth will hold up to the tremendous pressure of chewing on a hard bone; the dog's teeth may crack, or chip. Despite the validity in this concern, an dog's teeth are specially formed to withstand crunching, and chewing hard objects; this is part of their genetic makeup as predators.

- Another major concern is the bones splinter and crack in the dog's mouth, and later, the pieces may be choked on, or cut up the animal's mouth. Or even worse, if swallowed, will pass through the animal's digestive system, creating cuts and tears in the throat, stomach or intestinal lining.

Which Bones To Choose For Your Dogs

Many of the more extreme disbelievers in the benefits of dog bones prefer to give their dogs absolutely nothing even resembling a bone; better safe than sorry, but there are other options. The hard exterior of a good chew bones is good for teeth, --the same as the hard dog food or treats that is the staple of the majority of dogs' diets. Instead, you can use healthier and safer hide chewies; you've seen them before, usually they're hard pieces of white or red rawhide, --you know, the slimy drool covered things that you've seen stuck to your friends carpet? Those are great for dogs because they're hard enough to provide good chewing, which means puppies can use them for teething relief, and bigger dogs can safely chew without cutting their mouth. Other bones are sold specifically for dogs as well, found in pet stores, that are treated with vitamins and flavouring, and big enough so that they don't chip or splinter.

What is the best dog toy to keep a Labrador Retriever busy?

I have a 10 month old Labrador Retreiver and he is very good at chewing.

Now before I had this dog, I had another Lab and the other dog was a good chewer, but if we gave him a toy like a Boodah Chew, it would take him a few hours to eat it all. But here is the thing, the old dog was a dog who would chew something until it was gone, but this dog will chew his toys in multiple sittings. He will eat Kong Toys with peanut butter in one sitting, but the problem is, this new dog is a genius. He knows how to open the doors of the house, he knows how to unscrew lids. Its rediculous.

So I was wondering if there is a rough dog Chew toy (Doesn't need to be reusable) that is good to keep a Lab busy and interested.

A kong with a treat inside

Dog Chews

Dog Chews
My dog chews up everything how can I get him to stop?

He is a bulldog mix about 18 months old. When I leave home I put him in my fenced in backyard. Lots of room for him to run and play. I make sure he has plenty of toys but he still chews up everything. I come home one day and he had chewed the wood off my building and rails off my porch. I don't wont to crate him when I'm gone. I have tried walking him everyday before I go to work but it doesn't help.

he needs to be walked daily at least once a day for 45 minutes. 10 minutes on a leash a few times a week won't help.

1. Crating is fine as long as you will be gone no longer than 6 hours. If you will be longer than that call a friend or neighbor and have them come over and let the dog out for at least 15 minutes to stretch, relieve himself and have some water.

2. Hire someone to come over in the middle of the day while you're gone to take him for a 1 hour walk (this is in addition to your 45 minute walk with him prior to going to work)

3. Rehome the dog.

Your dog is bored and lonely and therefore destructive. Dogs are smart and pack animals and even though it seems to you that he has plenty of room and should be satisfied, dogs are hardwired for long distance walks with their packs every day of their lives. Your gorgeous back yard is no different than a kennel to your dog.

Dogs make the perfect companion, they are loyal and can be like a best friend. But they can have some pretty unpleasant habits and chewing everything in sight can be one of them. It is natural for a dog to want to chew but this can reach an unbearable point. A point where nothing you own is safe from your pet - when this happens you need to stop a dog chewing, and fast.

Training is one of the first ways that you can attempt this and there are plenty of dog obedience classes out there. Many of these classes specialise in dealing with problems in dogs such as excessive chewing and backing. You need to be aware that these classes can be quite expensive and you may need to attend for several weeks before you notice a difference in your dog.

You might also want to provide your dog with toys that he or she can chew on. There are some times that you can put treats inside, so they don't have to work hard to get at them. Toys like these can distract your dog sufficiently so that he or she does not chew your possessions any more.

Bored dogs tend to be more destructive than those that are busy, could your dog be bored? if your dog is at home by itself for long periods of time the chances are that it is. Try to get home at lunchtime to walk your dog or make sure they get plenty of exercise when you are at home. This should work to prevent your dog from chewing everything in sight.

Don't give up on your dog just yet if he or she had a chewing habit. As you can see if you need to stop a dog chewing our ways this can be done quite quickly and easily.
