First, if your dog barks because it is bored, it needs some exercise. Many dogs will need lots of exercise. Take your time to play with your dog and give it the attention it needs. Dogs that are constantly outside are especially prone to feeling lonely and bored. Give your dog chewing toys to keep it busy. You must also interact with your dog as often as possible. This will also alleviate its loneliness and boredom.

Maybe you should consider getting a second dog. Some dogs need company. Sometimes it is enough if you just let it meet other dogs. The company of another dog can be a valuable help to stop excessive dog barking. Some dogs barks because they want to communicate with other dogs.

However, perhaps the best way to stop it, is to train your dog. You can train it to avoid excessive barking, you'll need to train your dog. Dogs, like people, learn through association. If your dog can attract your attention through barking, it will do it as often as possible. You are actually rewarding it. Note that there are "good" barking, that has to be rewarded and "bad" barking, that has to be corrected.

You must reward your dog for this kind of barking, since it is needed and welcome. Pet it for a minute or so. Let the dog know this kind of barking is allowed. Believe me, dogs will know what kinds of barking are desirable and what are not, if they get the proper feedback.

Every time your dog barks without reason, you have to tell it to stop this behaviour. To reduce excessive dog barking, shake your hand in front of your dog. At the same time, simply say "no" in a very firm voice. Do not yell at your dog. And do not hit your dog either, this turns out counter productive for his behaviour. This could make him aggressive, which is the last thing you want. When the barking stops, reward your dog with praise. If it remains quiet for a minute or more, you can repeat the praise

Training a dog in general can be a bit of a mine field. There is so much to take in, what I have covered above just scratches the surface. To train a dog properly you really need to have some structure around what you do. There are many things that you need to take into consideration, such as exercise, diet, discipline, behavioural issues to name a few. I did a lot of research and tried lots of different things.

My dog Sammy is a Border Collie and had various behavioural problems, I tried a variety of so called dog training methods, such as different types of dog collars, books, diets etc. Some of these things did help, but the reality of it all was I had no structure or guidance from anyone to help me. Eventually I found my and now I understand why Sammy barks, he knows when its right to bark and when its not. Things are so much better for everyone, including the neighbours!!

Australia is a nation of pet lovers. This adoration is most apparent when you take a look at the Pet Products and Pet Supply industry. The KraMar Pet Company, an Australian owned and operated pet supplies manufacturing company, has seen a lot change in their fifty plus years in the pet product industry. Most obviously is the amount of money pet owners spend on their dogs and cats annually- recent research shows that Aussies spend more on their dogs than any other pet, totaling $2.7 billion annually, which works out at $732 per dog every year.

Along with the pampering of pets it is important that pets are taught how to behave correctly, to the benefit of owners, neighbours and other animals. Celebrity dog trainer, Steve Austin, from the Kramar Pet Company, recommends a range of pet products that can help you during the training process. These pet products include dog collars, cat collars, cat leads, dog leads, KraMar’s Supa Naturals Pet Treats, Wagwear dog apparel, and a large range of fun pet toys. KraMar manufacture and sell over 2 million collars and leads per annum, so they are the pet suppliers you can rely on as they know what they’re talking about. Also, all KraMar products are backed with a 100% unconditional guarantee.

All these pet products will help in your effort to train your furry friends to stop some of their worst habits, such as jumping up, barking, scratching, digging and more. Distract your dog with pet toys that are mentally stimulating, as most bad behaviors stem from boredom, says Steve Austin. At the first sign of scratching direct your cat to a scratching post so they know this is the spot for scratching. If they persist to claw the family furniture consider covering their main scratching spots with aluminium foil or double sided tape, as cats hate the feeling of both.

Dog rescues are organizations with the goal of helping dogs find permanent homes. Many dog rescues are geared to a certain type of dog, for instance there is probably a rescue for any breed of dog you can name.  There are rescues for basset hounds, Dobermans, Greyhounds, etc. And there are also rescues for the ‘mutts’ of the dog world.

Dog rescues are typically operated by volunteers who are dedicated to the welfare of that breed of dog.  They try to find new homes for abandoned, abused or relinquished dogs.  The reasons for so many dogs needing homes are numerous.  Some dogs may have been strays where no owners could be found for them.  The dogs could come from pounds or shelters where their days before being euthanized were numbered.  The dogs could simply have been unwanted and relinquished by their owners for reasons unknown.  At any rate, there are a great number of dogs who need rescuing and are in need of new homes.

Most dogs found in dog rescues have been examined by a veterinarian and as such have had their shots updated, have been spayed or neutered and have had any medical problems looked after.  Some of the dogs may have ongoing medical problems, such as blindness, a missing limb or arthritis, but such conditions are disclosed before they are allowed to be adopted.

With many dog rescues, the dogs have been placed in private ‘foster care’ homes and are looked after by caring people before they are offered for adoption.  Such a process ensures that the animal is ready to be placed in a permanent home, and can often dictate what type of home is best suited for that dog.

Now, where do you come in to help dog rescues?  Every dog rescue is in need of your help in one way or another.  Here are a few ways you can help:

Adoption:  If you are looking for a dog to adopt, going to a dog rescue is a great way to get a loving pet. You can find the breed, age and type of dog you want by searching for the appropriate dog rescue.  This is the number one way to help in rescuing dogs.

Fostering:  If you do not want a permanent pet, but could take one on for a short period of time, fostering may be the way to go for you.  You can be an individual or a family with a heart big enough to take one a dog in a safe loving environment until a permanent home can be found.

Transportation:  Sometimes a dog that has been relinquished needs to travel from one place or another (for example from a shelter in one city to another city a particular breed dog rescue is located in, or a dog on his way to a permanent home in another state).  You could volunteer to transport the dog from one city to another, one state to another, or even just part of the way.  Dogs also need transporting from the rescue site to a vet appointment.  You could be very helpful in volunteering your services in this way.

Supplies:  You could donate things like dog collars, leashes, dog food, bowls, dog toys, crates or whatever else you may think of that dogs would need. Just contact the dog rescue to find out what they may need and let them know you would like to help. You could collect items from friends, family members, garage sales, etc.

Monetary Donations:  Since dog rescues are typically run by volunteers, donations are always welcome.  You donations would go towards the feeding and housing of the dogs. Adoption fees only go so far, especially when there are so many dogs in need of rescue. And, most donations are tax deductible. Again, contact the rescue to find out how to go about this.

Administration:  You could volunteer your services in an office capacity at a dog rescue. You could help process adoption application, keep records for vet and other bills, answer telephones, handle correspondence, etc.

Advertising:  One of the most important jobs for dog rescues is trying to find appropriate homes for the dogs.  You could volunteer to put up flyers, advertise in newspapers or magazines, or even send out messages on the internet to find people who may be suited to adopt a dog from the dog rescue.

Whichever way you choose to go, dog rescues would be very grateful for any help you give them. Through caring volunteers, the dog rescue benefits and so do the dogs – and the bonus for you is the knowledge that you have helped give a needy dog a loving home.

Most dogs are born with a natural "coat," although there are some hairless breeds such as the American hairless terrier, the hairless Chinese crested, the hairless khala, the Peruvian Inca orchid and the xoloitzcuintli.  The history of placing human clothing on dogs is said to have begun during the reign of King Arthur around 520 A.D., when the dogs that were used as part of the military wore clothing to protect them from the elements and from attack.

Today, dogs used by police departments may wear clothing for protection, including bullet-proof vests, and service dogs wear special vests to let people know they're doing their jobs and for better visibility.

For the most part, however, pet owners like to dress their dogs up to make them look cute, although some dogs, including the smaller breeds, such as chihuahuas, mini schnauzers, toy poodles and other toy breeds, require dog clothes to keep them warm in cold weather.

Dog clothes and accessories are many and include dog shoes and socks, T-shirts, dresses, shorts, pants, swimwear, diapers, costumes, dog sweaters, jackets, hats and jewelry.  There are even breed-specific dog clothes such as bulldog hoodies.

Dog clothes come in a variety of sizes, styles and price ranges.  You can usually find clothes for your tiny chihuahua or for your lab.  Most dog clothes are suited to the small to medium breeds but there are some clothes made large enough for the larger breeds.

There are even eco-friendly dog sweaters that are manufactured from "scraps" of cotton that are too small to do anything with and would otherwise end up in an incinerator but are made into very stylish and colorful sweaters, thus saving the earth from more chemicals and saving water because they don't have to grow or dye any more cotton.

Relatively new is an eco-friendly dog jacket that's made from 100% recycled polyester fabric that is recyclable again after your dog either outgrows it or wears it out.  It has reflective flares on the back of the jacket to keep your dog visible on dark rainy days or at nighttime.

Some dogs apparently like to dress up for Halloween as there are many dog costumes available.  If your dog wants to be a clown, a football player, a skeleton, a pumpkin, a fairy, a penguin, a flower, a bumblebee, a cop or a dinosaur, you can find a costume for him this Halloween.

Don't forget to keep his feet warm with socks and shoes.  You can find a variety of sock styles and colors and also a variety of shoes, including sandals, boots, sneakers and moccasins.

Dog hats can include top hats, cowboy hats, bucket hats, Santa hats and elf hats.

If you're looking for a collar for your dog, there are numerous styles to choose from, whether you like plain leather or something fancier with spikes, flowers, glitter, snake print, ribbon, bandanna style or light-up.  They, too, come in a wide price range.  Most pet owners consider dog collars as a necessity, even if they don't dress their dogs in clothes.  Collars are essential if you want your dog to carry identification.  Some dogs wear necklaces, tiaras, bows, hairpins and charms.

Dog clothes have come a long way since King Arthur's days, from being necessary for protection to sometimes being necessary for warmth but more often making a fashion statement.  What does your dog's wardrobe look like?

Should shocking dog collars be considered animal abuse?

Those things really hurt. icon sad Dog Collars
If you can't train your dog without using pain, you probably should just get a hamster and call it good.

I think if anything is hurting a dog or made to hurt a dog, it would be abuse. Animals shouldn't have to deal with pain in order to be trained.

Edit -

Yes, I have used one. Turned it up high, and it gave me a jolt that hurt. Also, I've seen my neighbor use it on her dog, pretty sure it didn't enjoy the experience.

Dogs are supposed to be man's best friend. They shouldn't be hurt. They make mistakes, just like people. Imagine going to work and getting shocked by your boss for doing something wrong. Not fun. Same with babies, people don't zap them for flinging food at the wall or crying.

However, I admit, sometimes they are necessary, as with the rattlesnakes mentioned. It all just depends on how it's being used and who's using it.

The development of dog collars has come a long way since the first days of using rope to harness a dog. Now days there are training dog collars, and basic collars, muzzle collars, collars of all shapes and sizes and materials, and also fruity smelling collars (citronella) -- although dogs don't care for them.

GPS Dog Collars

One of the more fresh embellishments to dog collar technology is the GPS collar. It seems only right that if everyone else can have GPS tracking systems why not dog collars. Although dog owners from the beginning have been able to get along without GPS dog tracking systems, now days its almost pertinent to have. Hunters can use these GPS tracking systems to locate their pets, if they are far away from the group, or if a child is walking with the dog, and they get lost, a worried parent would be able to track the dog and the child, and/or if you are camping in the open and your dog runs away you will be able to track him.

One of the latest gadgets in the form of a GPS dog collar is the Astro Comobo-DC30. It comes with a wireless transmitter with VHF antenna, 17-36-battery hour life, collar adjustments so your dog is comfortable, standalone collar transmitters, and even a USB cable to connect to your computer. There is a useful dog tracker view option that allows you to see if your dog is running, walking, sitting or treeing. The works of this Astro combo DC30 really makes life easy for the avid hunter, camper, or park goers.

Reflective Dog Collars

Are exactly what they are, reflectors. A reflective dog collar reflects light in the dark. When light is shine on it, like a cone on the highway. This will help to keep your dog safe in the evening time, while on an after dinner stroll or jog, or to take out the trash. Having a reflective dog collar is important because many K9s have been hit by bikes or cars or stumbled on because at night it is hard to see them. With the reflective dog collars, your dog becomes much safer in the dark-and more visible to cars.

The reflective dog collar and the GPS dog collar are great things to have and make your life and your pets' life easier and safer. Dog collars are so important and as technology furthers, makers will find ways to continue making owners and dogs happier.

How do you make semi slip collars?

I like making things and it would be fun to make personalized dog collars.
it would, you can get super strengh thread, and sled with my dogs more than i walk them

You would be better off making decorative collars if you are going to stitch them yourself - martingale or slip collars are specifically used with a leash, and I would be afraid that the stitching from a regular sewing machine might not hold. That could be too dangerous.

It is necessary to have a dog collar on your dog, as it is often the law in most places to have your rabies shot tag attached to your dog for safety measures. Although they are necessary, a common fashion and trend these days, is to have personalized dog collars for your dogs, and in fact most people don't mind spending a bit to get a unique dog collar for their dog. After all, dogs are man's best friend, so why not treat your dog to something nice and unique as well? Here are some tips and advice on finding the best personalized dog collar....

Custom designed personalized dog collars - These days there are plenty of manufacturers who are providing collars which are exclusive, and they also have custom designed collars to suit your needs. These also make good gifts, as you can get them designed to suit and reflect the personality and likes of the canine owner.

Unique collars - If you want your pet to stand out, you can easily have your collar made to include unique materials like leather, suede, vinyl and many precious metals such as platinum, silver, or gold. You may also find collars decorated with beads, and semi-precious or precious stones which will add a very beautiful touch to the collar. You may also have unique gemstones like rubies, zircons, crystals... and even diamonds, put on the collar and designed in gorgeous patterns.

Most commonly, crystals have been used to spell the pet's name, and they make the collar look more appealing in general. The good thing about designer collars and unique collars, is that they are both fancy, yet they are also functional.

Sizes - Since dogs come in all different sizes, it would be quite obvious that you can find a personalized dog collar sized to fit your dog as well. Some common sizes range from the following:

  • Toy - 8 to 9 inches
  • Small dogs - 10-14 inches
  • Small to medium- 14-16 inches
  • Medium- 16-18 inches
  • Large- 20-22 inches-
  • Very large dogs- 22-24 inches

Most collars have a width of about ½ an inch to about 1 inch, and to scale things, the 10-14 inch collars are most commonly used with dogs like Jack Russell Terriers, Shelties etc...because they have smaller necks. Bigger dogs, like Labs, Retrievers, Dalmatians etc.. will need larger collars, because their neck sizes generally range anywhere from 14 to 20 inches. Finally, Great Danes, Rottweilers, or dogs who have a lot of fur/hair will need collars between 18 and 22 inches.
