You have to be mindful of the size of your dog,

something he is not supposed to, or you want to be

sure he is extra safe, you can put him in the

being in the crate, because he'll feel safe. You

dog is safe, and that the items in your house are

also safe!

The crate is very effective for dog house training

(which is probably why you're interested in it!).

The reason for this is because dogs do not like to

go to the bathroom where they sleep. Since the

crate will not allow them to leave, they will hold

it until they are in a place with they are

supposed to go to the bathroom.

It is important that you are very mindful of

letting your dog use the bathroom often enough.

This is especially true when they're the newest of

puppies, as the bladder control is not the best!

If you want this method to be as effective as

possible, you need to help your puppy develop good

feelings about the crate. Toys, comfortable

pillows, and food are positive items place in

there. Your dog will learn that good things happen

in the crate, and that is a safe and happy place

to be.

If you have a puppy, it's an especially a good

idea to start dog crate training as soon as possible.

It will help you with your potty training efforts,

and it will help to keep your dog safe and secure

since you can't be there every second of the day.

It will take some getting used to for your dog,

but the efforts are well worth the positive

results.

My dog is suddenly afraid of her crate?

I have a 2 yr old mini daschund. She has been sleeping in her crate since puppyhood. She goes in her crate willingly and without problem when its time to go to bed but this past week she does not want to go. I put her in and before I close the crate door, she tries to come out and whimpers when I place her back in. I have no idea how this whole thing came about. Is there any reason as to why she suddenly won't go in?

For a while my dog suddenly stopped liking her crate too. I eventually realized it was because I was leaving her ear medicine on top of the crate and she hates the ear medicine. So I moved the ear medicine and put a jar of peanut butter up there instead. Problem solved.

Look and see if you have made any changes to the crate, what is around it, how you have been using it (don't use for punichment), when you use it. If you can figure out what has changed, you can find out what she objects to. If all else fails, just feed her in her crate for a few days. It will remind her how WONDERFUL the crate is.

How can I help my claustraphobic dog?

I recently rescued a 1 yr old GSP mix from the SPCA, so I am not sure of her history. They stated she chewes and jumps..She has not chewed anything (except at our gates), she did jump, we trained her to sit and laydown. She walks on a leash 2-3 times a day, very well and loves to ride in a car. She is with me about 18 hrs a day. But when I placed her in our back yard she freaked out, chewing and pushing at the gate. We fixed the wooden gates so she can't chew at them. She starts to run around in a panic (I was w/her) and starts to pant rapidly. She has gotten a litte better over the last few days. I wanted her to sleep inside with me, when I closed my bedroom door ( I was w/her) she scratched at the door and started panting again (rapidly), she seemed like a scared little kid. I have not tried a crate yet, because I don't want to stress her out. I want to take her camping with us in our RV but I am worried that she will be stressed in a small area .How can I help her?

It seems like a closed door or gate triggers an "I am trapped" type of response from your dog. You should work on reprogramming her by feeding her next to a closed door, brushing her and giving her treats next to a closed door or gate, etc.

We adopted a Minpin with a LOT of phobias, and we have been able to help her work through almost all of them. It takes patience, creating positive experiences to accompany the phobic situations, and lots of love.

Do you travel with your pets? How I love camping trips with my animals! We just returned from hiking explorations of the Wind River Range, the Teton Mountains and the Gros Ventre Range. Cinnamon, our cat, and Maddie, our dog, travel with us. Maddie is sooo energetic. Those few people we passed on the trails would comment on her energy and joy.

"Now that dog has some hunt in her!" commented one man as Maddie flew back and forth across the grassy meadow. Well, we aren't hunters, but I'm sure Maddie wouldn't mind at all if we were. Watching her run and do her own form of hunting is a thing of beauty to watch and brings smiles to our faces. This is a picture of Maddie and me at the top of Coal Creek -- Mesquite Divide with the back of Grand Teton in background.

My nephew, Brad and his fiance, Lauren, traveled from Boise, Idaho to meet us in the Wyoming Wind River Range before Tom, my husband and I rolled further north in Wyoming. Of course, Brad brought his black lab, Drake and Lauren brought her dog, Moose. You see Drake here with Maddie enjoying his daily hot dog treat from me at our campsite. It was an adventure in itself getting 4 humans, 2 large black labs, a Shiatsu, and a cat in one small camper for dinner!

And who says small dogs can't do long hikes with the big dogs? Here is Lauren's solution to Moose's tired little legs, but that didn't stop him from traveling up Green River Lakes trail with the rest of us!

My favorite has to be my 16 year old cat, Cinnamon, who gets braver each year. Here you see her looking out the truck window in Pinedale, Wyoming, a first for her since she began traveling with us at age 12. She used to hide in her litter box in the back seat during all stops. Who says an old kitty can't learn to have new adventures?

I wouldn't miss these trips with my special animals. Now I know why so many people travel in campers and RV's, because most of them have at least one animal, usually a dog, along for the ride. It costs less, too. You don't have to pay a kennel or a pet sitter to care for them while you are gone. You get the added joy of their presence while you are on vacation, and you don't have to worry about them while you are gone with them right under your nose.

You can only fold it down if it's meant to. If it is, you should be able to push down on the top while pulling out on the front door- it will unhook from the top, then you can fold it in. Then, you do the same with the back wall- fold it in. Then, lean it to one side and the side will fold down, lean it to the other side, and it should be folded. (Sorry- it's hard to describe)

Choosing a dog crate is an important first step in the process of crate training your dog. Of the three basic types of dog crates- wire mesh, hard plastic, or soft fabric- the wire mesh variety is the oldest, and perhaps the most popular. According to one source, the practice of keeping dogs in cages such as these began in the 1960s. An enterprising individual from Indiana apparently bought cages originally intended for burning trash, and began reselling them as dog crates. Today, despite the fact that they have been adopted by the competitive pet supply industry, the basic design has not changed much. However, there are a few factors to consider when purchasing a wire mesh dog crate.

This style of dog crate can be further split into two basic designs- the folding "suitcase-style" variety, versus "drop pin" designs. The difference refers to the manner in which the sides of the crate are connected. A drop pin is a long metal wire with a hooked end. By inserting the pin through a series of loops along the edges of the crate sides, it holds the entire assembly together. Although this process requires no tools or mechanical expertise, it is sufficiently time-consuming that these cages are not considered "collapsible".

Suitcase style designs, on the other hand, are hinged together in such a way that the entire cage can be collapsed flat when desired. These designs are not quite as sturdy as the drop pin design, but allow the user to transport the crate much more easily. They are popular with owners who must frequently transport their pet in crates- if you plan to show your dog or take it to agility competitions, this is a good choice.

Apart from the basic design, there are a few other features to look for. Many cages have a removable catch pan in the bottom for when the dog soils its crate. Unless your dog is thoroughly housebroken, you'll want one of these, which can be bought separately for about twenty bucks. On the contrary, if your dog is consistently soiling its crate, you may consider picking up a "floor grid"- a simple wire mesh floor that keeps your dog from sitting in its own waste in case of an "accident".

Finally, look at the quality of the cage. Test doors to make sure they swing open and closed easily, and latch securely. Check all welds and ends of wire for sharp edges that may injure your dog. Once you're assured of the quality and safety of the crate, you can buy with confidence, knowing your dog will have a happy and comfortable home.

I have a cage like dog crate that I use for my dog at home. I want to buy one that I can use for travel or when my pup is with my in-laws being sitted. Would one of those soft ones be OK? Or is it worth it to invest in the hard plastic ones?

How do I use the crate to train my dog?

It is important a puppy to be trained to use a crate in order to save time and effort in cleaning up after them while they are still being potty trained.
Believe it or not, a puppy is genetically pre-disposed to needing a den.

Though you may have furniture that a puppy likes to lay on, they really need something that is completely enclosed, giving them a sense of security and comfort. Isolated rooms in your house are simply too big for puppies, and can leave them nervous, anxious, and even destructive.

Once your pup is housebroken, then you should leave the crate open for them for the entire day. You will likely find that that your puppy will willingly go into the crate to take a nap at various points in the day. When you have to leave for awhile, you can put the dog in the crate, but not for more then four hours at a time.

Remember, even though we as human beings don't wish to be placed in a tiny area where you only have enough room to turn around, you must keep in mind that dogs are not like people. Their ancestors would find safety, shelter, and comfort in their dens. Dogs today find solace and safety inside their crates in the same manner.

My dog hurts its snout trying hard to escape crate when i am at work. Ideas on how to safely keep dog crated?

My new dog (4 years old medium sized) will break out of the crate by unhooking the metal latch. It is a very smart dog. When it does get out, it will destroy the house. Does anyone know what I can do to keep it in the crate without it hurting itself to get out. Is there a better crate out there that will fit the description i am dealing with?

Plastic airline crate, drive two holes, one on top and one on the bottom of the door, right on the plastic and stick a rod through it. The rod stays in front of the door and prevents it from opening. Alternatively, you could get an aluminum crate, they are malinois proof and nothing will escape one..

Will this work for kennel/crating a dog when trying to potty train?

I was wondering if rather that actually putting my dog (chihuahua) in a kennel/crate if I could just puppy gate her in our kitchen. She does NOT go potty or poop in the kitchen, probably cause of the tile. But if she is holding it then that is the same concept as crating T/F?? She is also not destructive. And this way she has room to move about & stretch her legs. THOUGHTS?

It's about the same concept. If she is 100% adversed to going on the tile than it should be ok.
