Our dogs are beloved companions and family pets. They can't tell us by speaking when they are in pain, so it is up to us to read their behaviors in order to know when they need our help. The signs of arthritis in our dogs might be difficult to spot at first, but there are some signs to look for to tell if they are struggling.

When a dog has arthritis, their joints became inflamed, and they'll experience pain, heat and swelling in the joints. Just like us, dogs need exercise to stay healthy. If your dog has developed arthritis, you'll need to encourage exercise, but limit it to gentle, short walks, a few times a day. Our joints work the most effectively when we are at a healthy weight, and our dogs are no different. Dog rescues are organizations with the goal of helping dogs find permanent homes. Adoption:  If you are looking for a dog to adopt, going to a dog rescue is a great way to get a loving pet. You can find the breed, age and type of dog you want by searching for the appropriate dog rescue.  This is the number one way to help in rescuing dogs.

Fostering:  If you do not want a permanent pet, but could take one on for a short period of time, fostering may be the way to go for you.  You can be an individual or a family with a heart big enough to take one a dog in a safe loving environment until a permanent home can be found.

Transportation:  Sometimes a dog that has been relinquished needs to travel from one place or another (for example from a shelter in one city to another city a particular breed dog rescue is located in, or a dog on his way to a permanent home in another state).  You could volunteer to transport the dog from one city to another, one state to another, or even just part of the way.  Dogs also need transporting from the rescue site to a vet appointment.  You could be very helpful in volunteering your services in this way.

Supplies:  You could donate things like dog collars, leashes, dog food, bowls, dog toys, crates or whatever else you may think of that dogs would need. Just contact the dog rescue to find out what they may need and let them know you would like to help. You could collect items from friends, family members, garage sales, etc.

Monetary Donations:  Since dog rescues are typically run by volunteers, donations are always welcome.  You donations would go towards the feeding and housing of the dogs. Adoption fees only go so far, especially when there are so many dogs in need of rescue. And, most donations are tax deductible. Again, contact the rescue to find out how to go about this.

Administration:  You could volunteer your services in an office capacity at a dog rescue. You could help process adoption application, keep records for vet and other bills, answer telephones, handle correspondence, etc.

Advertising:  One of the most important jobs for dog rescues is trying to find appropriate homes for the dogs.  You could volunteer to put up flyers, advertise in newspapers or magazines, or even send out messages on the internet to find people who may be suited to adopt a dog from the dog rescue.

Whichever way you choose to go, dog rescues would be very grateful for any help you give them. Through caring volunteers, the dog rescue benefits and so do the dogs – and the bonus for you is the knowledge that you have helped give a needy dog a loving home.  

Dental care for dogs is to be given more emphasis nowadays because of the fact that dental diseases are emerging in the case of pet animals like dogs to a greater extent. Although you are giving home dental care, if you suspect that dental disease is beyond your control, then immediately get in contact with your veterinarian for proper treatment.

All dogs need love in order to lead happy, healthy lives. Since most breeds of hypoallergenic dogs are smaller, they will need even more love. There are several ways that you can show your dog that you love them. Respecting your hypoallergenic dog’s space will result in the more respect from your dog. Make sure your dog has a clean bed or blanket and they receive enough attention during the day. If your dog is sleeping, then you should not disturb it. This will only make the dog angry. Taking care of a dog also means respecting the dog’s boundaries. Some small breeds will become angry when their space in invaded during times when they do not want to be disturbed. As your dogs grows, you will learn when to socialize with the dog and when leave it alone.

What was, in the past, thought to have been intestinal and skin allergies, is now being revealed as illness due to the additives in commercial dog foods. It has gotten to such a point that a responsible pet owner does not know exactly where to turn. We have to continue to feed our four legged family members, but we do not want to put them at any kind of risk.

One of the easiest and best ways to find safe and healthy food for your pet is by using the organic pet food brands that are becoming more and more widely available, or by simply making your own. Before making the switch to organic foods, there are a few things that you should consider.

First, do not make a sudden diet switch. Ease your dog or cat into a new food routine gradually so that he does not develop any kind of stomach issues. Buy the new organic food, or your homemade mix, and start blending it with the old brand. Mix it fifty-fifty first, then, gradually increase the amount of the new food until the change over is complete.

Again, do not buy a huge amount of the new food until you are sure that the pet can tolerate it and likes it. It does not matter how much a food costs, it is not a bargain if nobody will eat it. (The smaller size will be more expensive in the long run, but again, it is not a bargain if you have a fifty pounds of dog food that Fido snubs.)

Making your own dog food, of course would be the ultimate goal. There are no huge dollars to be lost if your Rover decides he doesn't like what you “cook”. You can experiement to your hearts desire until you come up with the prefect meal that is nutritionally balanced and your dog loves – then freeze it in larger quantities!
