Lots of new dog owners are excited about becoming a dog trainer at home. Often times, however, this enthusiasm leads to an over zealousness and possible backlash from our canine friends. In this article we look to give our readers some tips to become a dog trainer for their four legged friends.
A big mistake most people make is placing puppies and new dogs in closed off cardboard boxes. This is a definite "don't do"! It is important to find your pet a quiet and safe area which you can prepare a soft bed for them in. Next, provide your dogs with their own chew toys, and make sure there are no dangerous objects lying around that could harm them if they attempt to chew them. Chewing is normal dog behavior, so give them an appropriate outlet.
Also, make sure you interact with your dogs and puppies on a regular basis, and avoid leaving them in closed off areas for extended periods. Ignoring your dogs and puppies can lead to severe behavioral problems in the future. Love, compassion, attention. These are things to share with your dogs and puppies on a daily basis. Set aside some time daily to interact with them, let them know they are accepted by you and your family.
On that note, don't hit your dogs. Also, there is no need to yell. Treat your dogs or puppies as you would a 2 year old child. Hitting or yelling at a child, especially one so young, has little positive effect on their healthy development. The same goes for canines.
In regards to leaving your dogs unattended and alone for extended periods, a matter of safety arises when it means leaving them in your car unattended in hot temperatures. This can lead to heat stroke and be potentially fatal to your animal. Again, treat them as you would a young child.
To become a dog trainer, it is important to realize that dogs and puppies rely on their owners for guidance, and that as the owner, you are in a position to train your dog the proper way.

Dog Trainer Shock
Has anybody used the citronella spray collar or a shock collar to try to control animal aggression?
Have you tried either the shock or citronella spray collar to control animal aggression in your dog? If so, was it successful and what breed of dog do you have?
And please, no responses about the shock collar being cruel, taking the dog to obedience classes, or the need to socialize the dog. The shock collar isn't cruel if used properly, most dog trainers do not deal with aggressive dogs, and trying to socialize an aggressive dog without some type of aid is just plain dangerous.
Chalice, actually with shock collars the tendency is to turn the level down over time. A dog will remember the higher levels and will occassionally only need a low level reminder. By the way, I test the collar on myself before putting it on the dog. And, in case you were wondering, my dog loves his collar. As soon as I get it, he gets excited because he knows we're going to the park. In contrast, both of my dogs run when I grab the gentle lead.
I have used it before but it's a really sensitive issue. You have to ensure you are engaging the shock correction at the precise moment..preferably before an aggressive behavior starts. In some cases, the shock could cause even more aggression and if it involves another dog- the dog could associate that dog with the shock and the situation could escalate. For an already aggressive dog- the shock collar agitated him even more. I found the shock collar to be more effective when I have my dog off leash in the fields, practicing hunting, deter him from chasing animals, etc..but so far I have stopped using it for aggression.

Personally, I think you need to work with a trainer before you try to use it by yourself.
In using it with my dog, I found that timing. is. everything. It has to be *precise*. It is too easy for an inexperienced person to become unaware of what to do in the particular situation they are training in, and press that button at the wrong time. You are not aware of what to do if you're dog has an unexpected reaction to a command.
Using it at the wrong time can ruin a dog, and it is not a chance I am willing to take by trying it on my own without first consulting a professional.

Remote dog training collars are a double edged sword. One one hand they are evil torture devices for your dog. On the other hand, they can be quite useful for training purposes. The fine line between them being used for good and used for bad all falls on how you use it.
The only way I would use remote dog training collars is for "distance" training. For example, if I was training a hunting dog or a SAR (search and rescue) dog. I would anchor the shock to either "sit" or "freeze". That would mean the dog would either sit or freeze when they felt the shock. That way I wouldn't have to worry about the dog running off after a butterfly.
The bad thing that a lot of people use remote dog training collars for is punishment. This is quite a harsh form of punishment, too harsh for dogs. If someone keeps the remote dog training collar on a dog all day, every day, and shocks them for everything they do wrong, such as not sitting quick enough, the dog is going to go crazy. This is the time, and one reason why dogs start to go kinda stir crazy. They are being shocked over and over again. It is quite understandable, isn't it?
The remote dog training collar, if used, should only be used for a limited amount of time. It should only be used for training purposes. It should not be kept on all the time, the metal prongs will dig into the dogs neck and could cause an infection.
If you do decide to use the remote dog training collar please keep in mind a few simple rules. First, never use it as punishment. That will make your dog run away from it and try its hardest to not wear it. Second, only keep it on for a limited amount of time. Once training is done, take it off and treat and reward your dog for doing a good job. Lastly, try to find a different method of training. Depending on what you are training for, you might find a method that works better. Don't use a remote dog training collar for basic obedience, that is a little over kill.
