In training your dog is shock therapy more effective then citronella collar?

To train a stubborn dog, is it better to use a shock collar or a citronella collar (that sprays out and unusualy smell that the dog dislikes), what are the benefits of each and which one is more effective?

I used everthing out there for my dog... I broke down and got a Shock collar and it worked GREAT.. and the good news is I only used it for 2 weeks, Then the next 2 weeks I just had to pick it up so he could see it and lay it back down... So now I don't need it no more,,,

If you get one..
-the 1st couple of times Don't leave you dog alone.
-put it on 1/4 of the shock or less..
-And for Very Short times frames..
-

If you are stuck training an aggressive dog, you're task is obviously harder than usual. But don't worry-when you use the right techniques it can be done very quickly and surprisingly easily.

Before you know how to train effectively you have to understand WHY they act out in the way they do.

Don't worry-this isn't some lame "canine physiology" course... but you do need to know the cause if you want to tame them.

There are 2 different reasons for why they act aggressively. Here they are along with their corresponding solutions.

REASON #1) Dominance

Many dogs think their dominance is in question when new people come over. Therefore they act out to let them know who's boss.

Solution

The best course of action here is to show your authority over them. This doesn't mean be harsh... simply strict.

If the dog doesn't obey then simply put them to bed or give them a "timeout". When you do this enough times--and let them know that disobedience won't be tolerated--they will soon learn you are in charge. This is one of the most important tips for successfully training an aggressive dog.

REASON #2) Fear or anxiety

Canines HATE change. Therefore often times new people or a different environment triggers fear and anxiety in them.

Solution

You need to "socialize them" and get them out and about as often as possible. The more they get used to new people and places the less they will fear it.

But start as quickly as you can. It's harder for an older animal to adapt if they haven't experienced much change in their life.

But even if they are older--it's better lat then never. Just make an effort to keep them out and about when you have your friends over... and also take them to different places to get them used to new surroundings.

Finally--be PATIENT

It make take a short time but eventually they will get over their fear of change. These tips for training an aggressive dog do admittedly take a little while... but if you are diligent you will reap the rewards.

Dog Training

Does anyone know of a good dog training class in the Horfield/Filton area of Bristol?

I have just adopted a second dog and would like to find a good training class to take both of them to. I live in Horfield, Bristol so anything close to there would be great. Thanks.
I was hoping for some recommendations rather than picking one from the internet or yellow pages.

I have attempted to train my dog 3 times in the last 3 years.
Pet Smart, and two private trainers. Nothing worked!

My dog, Barley is overall a great dog. He is a Wheaton Terrier. There were just a few problems that we have been unsuccessfully working on such as him bolting out the door if it's open and by the way he is faster than a speeding bullet!

Also, he would love to jump up on everyone that he gets within a foot of.

I finally stumbled across the Secrets To Dog Training! This really was amazing! This was something I did at my own pace. Although Barley's main issues are no longer issues, I still apply the techniques that I learned from Secrets to Dog Training almost everyday.

Dog Training Free Information To effectively train a dog, or a puppy it is so important to understand a few basic points that will make the training successful; regardless of the training approach you take.

This is because dogs respond well, and are more able to understand and obey someone who they view as their leader or Alpha Dog. If they do not view you as the alpha, any type of training you try to give them will be difficult. Remember that dog obedience is a state of mind more than anything else.

So let's start with training to make sure you become the alpha boss. To begin with always feed dogs after you eat. This is because in their natural habitat that pact leader eats first and then passes the remainder to the pact. So if you feed your dog last his instincts acknowledge the fact that you are in charge. Conversely, if he eats first, his instincts are telling him that you are subordinate to him, and he is above you in the pecking order. Well that is an easy one.

The next dog training event to start on in order to establish your position is walking. The ultimate goal is to make sure that the dog or puppy never leads and never pulls or tugs. If they lead, they will automatically pull or tug because they feel in charge and will want you to follow. Just as dogs would do in the wild as a pact. So start with tiny little walks in the yard, and every time he pulls simply stop and turn around, then make him sit. Look him in the eyes and convey confidnece and let him know you expect him to walk on your side.

Once he is sitting then start walking the other way until he pulls, which he will. When he does stop the procedure and begin again the other way. It is important to know that this is one of the more challenging parts of training a dog, but also one of the most important. That is why it needs to start right when you start training.

Be patient, it will take about 3 to 5 weeks. Look for small and continual progress. Now we will look at general interaction with your dog. Pets are wonderful and we want to love and cuddle with them all of the time. While there is no issue with this, in the beginning crate train your puppy as this will establish leadership boundaries and also let him know that he has a place in the house that is his. More importantly, it keeps him from sleeping with you when he is young. By doing this he will learn that you, as the pact leader, sleep in your area and he sleeps where you tell him, in another location. Again, just as he would do in a dog pact. The next thing to do, especially if you have a puppy, is to inspect all over his body every day. While it may seem silly, this is something his mother would do, so by you doing it when they are young, they understand you are there to protect them. This feeling will also cause them to be subordinate to you. Look for rashes, skin irritations, hot spots, sores, or any painful areas. This will also let you know is you have a dog with allergies. If you incorporate these above items into your dog training routine, regardless of which program you pick, you will have success. More importantly you will have a great dog that is under control to be proud of. All of the above discussions apply top tiny lap dogs up to the biggest breed you can imagine. You see training a dog successfully is not so much dependent on the training program you use, but the dog behavior and leadership you either convey or don't convey.

I hope this article will help train your puppy or correct dog control problems.
