Arthritis is where you have an inflammation of the joints. And in old age for dogs it means that the joints swell and become painful and stiff. Some of the things that can cause this problem are earlier injuries such as torn ligaments. Symptoms of arthritis are lameness particularly after first getting up from lying down and unwillingness to jump or go for long walks or even getting up. Dogs will suffer more in winter time as the joints tend to swell more.

Some ways in which you can manage arthritis are:

Weight Control: - Ensure that your dog is the correct weight for their breed and age. As the owner, you have control over what you feed your dog. Feed quality food in an amount appropriate for your dog's size, breed and activity level and keep treats to a minimum; your dog should be able to maintain an ideal weight. If your dog is overweight, seek the suggestion of your veterinarian regarding low calorie dog food and an exercise program.

Exercise: Make sure that your dog does get regular exercise in shorter sessions this is always better than long work-outs on weekends. Warming the muscles prior to exercise and following exercise with a "warm-down" period are beneficial. Daily exercise will ensure that they maintain their correct weight. Exercise that provides good range of motion and muscle building as well as limiting wear and tear on the joints is best. Leash walks, swimming, walking on treadmills, and slow jogging are excellent low-impact exercises. Keep in mind that whatever exercise program you select it should be individualized for each dog based on the severity of the arthritis, his weight, age, and physical condition. If in doubt consult with your veterinarian regarding an exercise program appropriate for your dog.

Sleeping areas: Cold and damp weather will aggravate the symptoms, keeping your dog warm, with a pet sweater and keep the temperature in the house a bit warmer. Providing proper dog bedding such as a orthopedic foam bed helps many dogs with arthritis. Beds with dome-shaped, orthopedic foam distribute weight evenly and reduce pressure on joints. They are also much easier for the pet to get out of. Place the bed in a warm spot away from drafts.

Massage therapy: Your vet can show you how to execute physical therapy and massage on your dog to help relax stiff muscles and encourage a good range of motion in the joints. Remember, your dog is in pain, so start slowly and build trust. Begin by petting the area and work up to gently kneading the muscles around the joint with your fingertips using small, circular motions. Gradually work your way out to the surrounding muscles.

Daily Routine: Climbing stairs becomes difficult for arthritic dogs; it can make going outside to urinate and defecate extremely hard. Dog owners will tend to build or buy ramps, especially on stairs leading to their yard, to make it easier for their dogs to go outside.

Don't let your beloved dog suffer from arthritis there are many things that you can do as a caring owner to help them manage their pain

How do you keep a dog house warm in the winter, but cool in the summer? without any electricity?

I am doing a science project, and we have to keep a dog house cool in the summer, and warm during the winter, without any electricity. I was thinking of using straw bale, but how would i do that? like, how would i attach it? would there be cement involved? oh, and its not literally a doghouse, its a model/prototype. please help! thanks!

Just like your own house, insulate it from the cold/heat with insulation.

When your dog comes in after being outdoors, make sure you check him thoroughly. Look for any discoloring, particularly on the tips of his ears and other extremities. If you see ANYTHING that looks like frostbite make sure you contact your veterinarian. People don't realize what harsh chemicals are used on the roads in the winter. There is salt (or other ice melting chemicals) as well as antifreeze that has leaked out of cars. This can be extremely hazardous and even life threatening for any dog that happens to lick that snow or get salt lodged between his footpads.

Your dogs needs a little extra care in the winter so here are some guidelines to help make them feel comfortable.

1. If your dog likes to sleep on floor heating vents to stay warm, there is always a chance he could get his identification tags caught in the vent. Put his tags in a "Pet Pocket" that can be attached to his collar. You can find these Pet Pockets at any pet store.

2. Don't be afraid to give your dog additional food in the winter. They need extra energy to fight off the cold.

3. If your dog has his own dog bed, place a flannel sheet over it for extra warmth.

4. If you have a small dog that is very accustomed to living indoors, please watch him when he goes outdoors and don't let him stay outside for very long. They can acquire frostbite much quicker than larger dogs.

5. NEVER leave antifreeze in an area where your dog can get at it. Also, make sure to clean up any spills you have made in your garage.

6. Always wipe off your dogs paws thoroughly when he comes in from outside so you can get rid of any salt that is in between his paw pads.

7. If you have an elderly dog with short hair and he is sensitive to the cold, make sure to purchase a warm sweater for him even if you go on short walks. You don't want to add to his discomfort.

8. We all know warm air rises, so if your dog can sleep "OFF" the floor it would add extra warmth for him. Also make sure he is in a draft free area in your home.

9. Please do not let your dog off the leash in a snowstorm or ice storm. He would not be able to use his sense of smell to find his way home if he got lost.

Dog Warm Winter

Keeping dog warm in winter?

I have a 1 and a half year old border collie mix. When we are home she lives is inside and will always be indoors at night. However, in the mornings it get quite chilly (we live in NC) and she has to be in our garage. We have a dogloo and several blanket but I am scared she will be cold...what do you all think, any suggestions?

Thanks

You can get a heated pad for the dogloo. See the link below for several options.

My concern in the garage is that she will get into things (like chemicals) that can be flammable (like gasoline) and/or poisonous (like anti-freeze). If you park your cars in the garage, she could lick-up a puddle of leaking anti-freeze and/or other car fluids and die. ...Just something to keep in mind.

Most dog owners would agree that dogs do not need to wear clothes, since they were born with a built in fur coat. Why defy nature?

Other dog owners maintain that their dogs need to wear clothes, since they will feel cold in cold weather like human do. Why denied them the apparel to keep them warm. And then there are those other dog owners who just dress their dog to look fashionable and cute, simply for their own delight.

In spite of all the different opinions, there are however real reasons to consider making your dog wear clothes. Modern dogs do not have to endure the ravages of nature as they did back in the days of wolf packs, so our pet dogs have become accustom to the same climate controlled environment we enjoy.

Today, even veterinarians agree that domesticated dogs physiology has evolved and adjusted to human environmental standards, therefore they do need extra protection from the cold as much as their human counterparts. If you are trying to decide if your dog needs clothes apparel in the practical sense, a good indicator is the type of dog breed and the environment you live in.

Obviously dog clothes are not a must to every dog breed living in warm climate. It is typically in these warm climates that dog owners only dress their dog in fashionable little outfits. Owners of small dogs and dogs without a lot of fur living in a cold climate may choose to put their dog in some sort of clothing.

For example, small breeds like Chihuahuas lose heat quickly and easily, so a sweater would be essential in rainy or cooler climates. In areas where the weather is bitterly cold, a sweater and insulated dog booties may be required. The best bet during these bitter cold months, however, is to keep your small dog indoors.

Dogs that have had medical treatments that result in the loss of fur will often need at least some protection from the weather until their fur grows back. This also applies to dogs that have been shaved for agility and show reasons.

Large dogs that have short hair, such as a Great Dane, may need a shirt or a sweater in cold climates. There are several online stores that specialize in custom dog clothes and these would be the best bet for purchasing clothes for large dog breeds.

Some dog breeds that are acclimated to living in cold conditions do not need clothes at all even in extremely cold weather. Examples of such breeds that enjoy the cold are the Siberian Husky, Great Pyrenees and the Saint Bernard. Besides, putting clothes on a large dog that is used to being outdoors would be plain silly - they would get too hot and get heat stroke easily! The only type of clothing these dogs might need would be insulated booties if they spend long periods of time outdoors.

Some dog owners may have the opinion that dressing your dog in clothes is cruel and defying nature; however, under practical circumstances such as during bitter cold winter time, putting apparels on your dog could keep them comfortable, warm and even save their life.
