Some people are driven to acquire the fastest possible car. Or amass wealth. Or get the corner office. Others are driven to build a strong family unit, or to find the perfect romance.

What drives you?

Humans are composed of many drives and desires. We humanoids are complicated creatures. Dogs, however, are much simpler in their major needs and desires, or what I’ll call drives.

A dog’s most important need is the desire for social order, to follow a strong, compassionate leader. I call this Pack Drive. Pack drive can be best summed up like this; it is the desire to follow and collaborate with a clear leader. You can see this drive in action when you notice your dog trying to please you.

But dogs do possess other drives as well. Here is a list of the other most important instincts that literally drive dog behavior…

Prey Drive: the urge to chase, catch, kill and consume moving animals. You see this in action every time your dog chases a squirrel. Unfortunately, you may also see it when your dog chases your cat.

Play Drive: a modified form of Prey Drive, Play Drive is the urge to engage in mock hunting behavior. Play Drive is at work when your dog pounces on a squeaky toy and pretends to shake it to death.

Defensive Drive: the urge to defend himself, his pack mates, or his territory. Not all dogs have the drive to defend, and not every dog can stand up to the pressure of defending. A dog who reacts with a desire to defend, but who lacks the confidence to do so, generally shows fear before aggression. You may note this if your dog barks at the door, but runs away when you let someone in.

Fight Drive: If your dog stands his ground when confronted by threats, real or imagined, he may be high in Fight Drive, the instinct to take action to defend.

Flight Drive: A dog who does not stand his ground when facing a so called enemy or frightening situation, flees, and he is said to be high in Flight Drive. This and other drives are well explained in the works of authors Jack and Wendy Volhard.

It is important for us to understand what drives a dog, what makes him tick, in order that we may not only live with him peaceably, but also so we may train him in the easiest possible manner. To train a dog naturally, in a way that makes sense to his way of thinking, means the dog will learn to do what you want at incredible speed.

If that sounds hard to believe, think about it this way. When dogs play or interact, from the second they meet, they are exchanging information using body language. They speak much faster than humans because they can say “don’t come any closer,” merely by squinting an eye. So their language is quick and most dogs speak it fluently. This is why you’ll see dogs introducing themselves carefully at the dog park before playing. First each must know where he ranks in the pack, who he can be boisterous with, and to whom must he yield. Rarely does a dog fail to understand when another dog explains to him, “I am dominant. I would like to play with you, but please allow me to control the play.”

This happens in the blink of an eye and is the main reason there aren’t constant fights in dog parks. In fact, one of the rare times dogs do fight is when two dominant dogs meet and cannot negotiate a power sharing arrangement. This is rare, because they normally can work out a solution. Fights can also occur when a dog lacks confidence, is high in flight drive, and is cornered by other dogs.

Generally, though, dogs communicate quickly, and for a great reason. If they can instantly determine what their relationships are to be, there is limited need for fighting. And that is good for the species. Evolutionary success demands that social creatures work out their problems peacefully within the species, lest the animals expend more energy on killing one another than thriving. Dogs are a very successful species, and their drives, coupled with their ability to adapt, is the reason.

So what does any of this have to do with training your dog? Let’s go back and remember Pack Drive, the urge to follow and collaborate with the Leader. Dogs have this instinct for a good reason. If no one is in charge, chaos reigns. This means in the dog pack, no one has the authority to determine when we hunt, which deer is slow enough for us to catch, which dogs should pass along the best genes by breeding, and so forth. Lacking clear Leadership, dogs become nervous or aggressive…or both. In the wild, neurotic or unproductive aggression spells doom for the individual so afflicted, or for the entire species if those traits become common.

Dogs are born with Pack Drive so that their species does not live in chaos, thereby dying out. Instead, Pack Drive allows a Leader to emerge and keep the pack safe, content and well fed.

Training your dog is an important step in teaching him to meet your expectations. By recognizing how he his psychology functions, you’ll have a better chance of helping him understand what you want. Appeal to your dog’s need for social order by being a clear and compassionate Leader. By all means, share resources with your pet, just be sure you go first.

Here are a few tips that can help engage your dog’s Pack Drive so that he’ll see you as a Leader, and want to cooperate with you.

One, exit doors ahead of your dog. Encourage him to wait while you step through first.

Two, when walking your dog, don’t permit him to pull ahead of you. Instead, use any fair training method to teach him to walk at your side on a loose leash.

Three, ask your dog to sit before you feed him. Do not release an excited dog to his food bowl. Simply get the sit and stand quietly until he relaxes for a moment, then feed him.

Four, if you enjoy close contact with your dog, allow him to snuggle with you, but only when you have invited him to do so. If he gets in your lap without an invitation, take him off, have him sit, then invite him up as a reward.

Five, take your dog for a walk in a large open field on a 20 foot leash. If he runs ahead of you, simply turn around and walk briskly the other way. Before long, your dog will find it more pleasurable to keep an eye on you and allow you to pick the direction.

If you struggle with any of these matters, a professional dog trainer can help you upgrade your Leadership skills. Reward your dog only when he is in Pack Drive, attempting to please you. As Dog Whisperer Cesar Millan says, dogs follow a Pack Leader.

i want to buy a set of mag wheels i need to know what 8/9 gears means?

in the add it said the rims are for a bike with 8/9 gears. how can i check my mountain bike to see if i have a compatiable bike with the right gears. please help with this question it is driving crazy.

The rims are made to fit any amount of gears ( 7,8,9,10 ) . It is the hub that takes in the cassette (not the rims!) so there shouldn't be any worries about this . Its the rear derailer that you should take note of when fitting 8 speed or 9 speed gears . Also , do take note of the shifter AND chain when fitting you bike . When in doubt , bring your bike to a reputable bike shop and have the people there sort it out for ya .

If you have an Xbox 360 or a PS3 you are well aware how awesome the play is already. For those of us that have our PC joined at the hip we are looking for good PC play, naturally. For all those times when I am unable to play the stuff hooked up at home, such as going out of town for work and when I'm lucky enough to go on a vacation, I like to play on my handy PC. It's always there so I am always keeping an eye out for new games. Not only new but good play is what I'm after. To date the best I have found is the ARMA II Armed Assault PC Game. For PC play it hits all my buttons

Don't let the small price slow you down. This game far exceeds expectations. I was thinking it would not be so great because of the price. I was wrong. If you are into army simulation type games then you will be amazed by the realistic aspects of this game. More so than any other game of this type that I have played ever, on any gaming platform.

The war campaign is complicated. There are main plans that soldiers get sent out on, then they go off on mini missions quite a lot. So many things are happening in a small area with different surprises popping up to test you. The smallness of the battle area keeps you close to the action at all times.

The coolest part of the game is how you get to plan it all out. It is called the Editor. The ARMA II game has two massive maps that you can use. It's like playing house in a war game because you can go trekking around to see everything and install your soldiers, animals, and vehicles anyplace you want. You can get into fights and drive wherever too. This allows you to create the battle zone how you want and then the battle begins.

When you look at the whole picture this game rings all the bells and whistles for intense action. You do need around 60 minutes to go through the whole adventure from start to finish. This is a game for the total game player who needs something for the PC. You get the added involvement of talking to other players, and that is sometimes funny. It makes you feel like being even more into the game. The reviews get the message across that a fast internet connection is needed to play to the fullest. Playing hard is the whole point. So if you don't have high speed yet, this is yet another reason.

If your hoping to try a new game for your computer then ARMAII Armed Assault is one to buy. The new ARMAII Armed Assault PC Game makes you feel like you are really inside of the drama.

What is the difference between industrial standard push button compared to heavy duty?

I can't find the answer to this anywhere, anyone help?

What is the difference between an industrial push button and heavy duty push button? Is it just the casing it's in, or can it not carry as much current?

Thanks

You are probably better off phoning the supplier and asking them. It might just be that the casing is a bit tougher.

Gph Submersible
Better submersible pump out there than what I have?

I have a Bird's Choice Stonecreek Waterfall, which is basically a rock with a pump inside that recirculates water in a birdbath out the top opening in the rock and down the sides. The pump is 120 GPH. Although it seemed to perform OK last year, this year it moves very little water despite its obvious attempt. There seems to be no way to take it apart and clean it so I've done the best I can. Does anyone know of a way to clean or repair a pump like this? If I need to replace it, can I buy a more powerful pump or do I have to stick with an exact replacement. Obviously it has to fit within the rock, but there seems to be many that are the correct size. I am afraid that I don't know anything about these things, so any advice would be appreciated. Thank you!

contact the manufacture..... or maybe run vinegar through it....

So you're looking for a Koi pond pump, but you're not quite sure where to turn? Well maybe these guidelines can help steer you in the right direction.

One of the main things that you want to get right is the power and function of the pump. First of all, it has to be able to move the volume of water in the pond. We're talking about a pump that will circulate half of the volume of water in the pond within one hour. It has to be able to do it efficiently without struggling. So you're looking to get a pump with an adequate gph (Gallons Per Hour) capacity.

Now if you own a large pond, then you will want to consider looking into a Koi pond pump that doubles as a filter. The reason and necessity for this added filtration is simply because most dedicated biological filters lack the power and capacity to successfully filtrate many of the solid particles and waste in a large pond by themselves. The added filtration of the combination pump and filter puts your mind at ease that your Koi are less likely to be swimming in muck and adverse health conditions. Remember, Koi require clean, fresh, aerated water for good health and longevity of life. Along with proper feeding, pond maintenance and overall care on the part of the owner, there is a heavy amount of responsibility that lies with the Koi pond pump and filter as they are in essence, the lifeline of your Koi.

Waterfalls and fountains are great additions to any pond, and in a Koi pond they are even better for a few reasons. First, fountains and waterfalls fold oxygen back into the water. This folding process helps to aerate the pond water by supplying this needed oxygen to your Koi fish. Secondly, the sound of running water through a fountain or over a waterfall induces such a calming and tranquil atmosphere, and all of this adds to the serenity of your garden. So with all that said, a sufficient Koi pond pump is needed, one that will move the large amount of water in the pond well enough to supply water to the fountain and waterfall.

There are two main types of pond pumps to choose from, and depending on your particular circumstances and preferences will determine which one you should go with. The two types are submersible and external pumps. Submersible pumps are often favored because they are, for the most part hidden, submerged under the water of the pond and out of sight, contributing to the aesthetic beauty of the garden pond. In the past they were not as sufficient in larger ponds as apposed to an external Koi pond pump. But these days there are several submersible pumps that will handle the movement of water in larger ponds effectively. Be sure to check its gph capacity.

Within the two categories of submersible and external, there are several sub-categories including solar and magnetic pond pumps to choose from. In most cases, solar pumps are not sufficient for managing the water in larger ponds. On top of this, there is the obvious - solar pumps will require sunlight. If there is not enough of it reaching the pumps solar panels, due to trees, buildings or lack of sunlight in general, then the pump does not operate effectively. However, in smaller ponds with adequate sunlight, a solar powered Koi pond pump could be a great way to go eco-friendly and save on energy costs keeping you and your Koi a little happier. A magnetic pond pump is also nice because it is generally much quieter then a standard pond pump. Again, taking us back to that idea of maintaining that peaceful, tranquil garden atmosphere with little to no unwanted noise from the pond pump. A magnetic pump is also safer for the fish as it contains no oil that could leak through seals and into your pond water. Even so, the seals on a magnetic pump are generally tighter then standard pump seals. A magnetic Koi pond pump is also energy efficient.

It would be a good idea to have your pond details to hand when talking to a specialist regarding your pond pump requirements. You will need information such as the dimensions of your pond along with the water capacity, how many fish are in the pond and how large they are. You might be asked how large you intend to grow them and if you have intentions of adding more fish in the future. You should also let them know if you have any plants, fountains or waterfalls in the pond or if you intend to add any of these features later. Getting as many details together before hand can save you much time and money in the long run.
