All pet dogs should be treated as members of our family and adequate attention must be paid to the canine's health. Sometimes dogs become sick but may not look so. It is very important to recognize and understand dog illnesses symptoms.

Since prevention is a better cure, we must learn something about dog illnesses and symptoms so we can better understand their conditions. This will help us recognize some common dog illnesses. If appropriate and adequate vaccinations are administered to the puppies, most of the common dog illnesses can be easily prevented.

Some elementary observations are useful to recognize certain common dog illnesses. Dogs take a lot of sleep but their sleep is marked by alertness. If a dog is sluggish then there may be various causes contributing to it, right from anemia to old age. If the dog is limping then you should check for prospective painful areas using a firm and yet gentile hand. Check out for any signs indicating lameness from time to time.

The appetite of the dog is bound to be affected by ill health. Look for any signs of loss of appetite. An important sign of dog health problems is excessive thirst. A pronounced weight loss is also an indicator of ill health. Check the eyes for any ulcers, discharges, veins or sores.

The mouth of a healthy dog is pink. There should not be any discoloring or cavities in the teeth. Look for signs of discharge from ears. It is advisable to clean the ears from time to time. The dog's head should be regularly checked for sore patches, hair loss, or deep wounds.

Investigate the limbs and trunk for the same signs. If the dog is vomiting, there may be various underlying problems. If the body temperature of your dog is not between the range 38 to 39 Celsius it is an indication of some kind of illness. Check the female dogs for any kind of foul smelling vaginal discharge, which needs attention of a vet.

The symptoms of pain and discomfort experienced by a dog can give us many clues about the possible underlying illness. If the dog is suffering any abdominal pain, it may be due to canine hepatitis, enteritis or it can be a simple case of constipation. The abdominal swelling dogs indicate canine bloat and roundworms in puppies. Aggression of the dog may be caused by rabies. Roundworms, tapeworms, and whipworms my cause anemia in dogs. Any behavioral changes in dog can be an indicator of hookworms, tapeworms, whipworms, canine arthritis, heart disease, canine, or parvovirus.

Kidney diseases sometimes cause blood in urine. Eye infections and entropion cause bloodshot eyes in dogs. A ruptured diaphragm, obstructed airway, lungworm, bronchitis, pneumonia, food poisoning, heatstroke, allergies can cause respiratory problems in dogs.

There are various reasons of sudden change in weight of dogs like heart disease to heartworms. Hernia might be caused due to long term constipation in dogs. Allergies, parvovirus, hepatitis, lungworm, TB, pneumonia or distemper may be one of the reasons of coughing in dogs. Cannine parvovirus can also cause dehydration in dogs. Any pancreatic disorder, food poisoning can give rise to diarrhea in dogs. The dog may suffer from hair loss due to mange, red mange demodectic, scabies, cheyletiella mange, or cushings syndrome.

In its simplest terms, Pyometra (Pyo means "pus" and Metra refers to "uterus") is an infection in the uterus. The disease mainly affecting middle-aged female dogs that have not been spayed. Pyometra is a hormonal abnormality, and a secondary bacterial infection may or may not be present. Pyometra follows a heat cycle in which fertilization did not occur. Typically, within two to four months after the cycle, the female starts showing signs of the disease.

Female dog ovaries are producing tow main hormones estrogen and progesterone. Overquantity of progesterone or oversensitiveness of the uterus to progesterone causes Pyometra and cysts are forming in the lining of the uterus. These cysts contain numerous secretory cells, and large quantities of fluids are produced and released into the interior of the uterus. This fluid, along with a thickening of the walls of the uterus, brings about a dramatic increase in the overall size of this organ into sac-like pouches the circumference of cucumbers and 12 to 18 inches long and weighs around 1 to 4 pounds compare to normal 2 to 4 ounces.

Bacteria commonly colonize the uterus by entering through the cervix. This produces an even greater response by the body, as it showers additional fluid and white blood cells into the affected organ. This effectively traps all of the fluid within the uterus. As the body attempts to flush out the build-up of waste products through the kidneys, the animal will drink excessive quantities of water and urinate large amounts frequently. As the uterus increases in size and weight, the dog shows weakness in the rear legs, often to the point where she cannot rise without help. As the dog enters kidney failure, she stops eating and becomes very lethargic.

Diagnostic test were; complete blood cell count, a chemistry profile to evaluate function of internal organs, radiograhs of the abdomen, ultrasound of the uterus, culture of pus in the uterus, and biopsy of the uterus if cancer is suspected.
Since toxicity may develop very quickly in dogs with Pyometra, it needs to be treated promptly. Dogs will receive intravenous fluids, usually for several days before and after the surgery, and antibiotics for 1 to 2 weeks. In most cases, the preferred treatment is a complete ovariohysterectomy (spay). This removes the ovaries, oviducts, uterus, and all associated blood vessels. Other treatment includes transfusions of plasma, Hetastarch and while blood. In mild cases, when the cervix is still open and the fluid is draining, the success rate is excellent. This therapy should only be used in dogs 6 years of age or younger, who are in stable condition, and have an open cervix. Prostaglandins help the uterus to expel pus and alters the hormone levels of the ovaries. Prostaglandins can have side effects, especially after the first dose, including restlessness, panting, vomiting, increased heart rate, fever, and defecation.

The best prevention is to have all female animals spayed at or before six months of age. If the animal is used for breeding, then spaying the animal after she is past her breeding years is highly recommended. Pyometra is a fairly common and serious problem and is just one of many compelling reasons to have female pet spayed at an early age.

As usual my new puppy is giving me something to write about. This time it is her first heat. By now a new dog owner should have made the decision to breed their female dog or not. Breeding is not a profitable endeavor, therefore it should be done only to propagate a breed of dog.

Having your dog go through the heat cycle is a messy stressful 3 week or more period. A dog usually experiences a heat cycle twice a year after she reaches 6 months of age. In larger dogs the cycle may be every 9-12 months. In some breeds like Basenji's it may only be once a year.

There are four stages to a heat cycle. The first is called Proesterus. The vulva swells and there is a bloody discharge. The bitch secretes pheromones which attract the males. This period lasts about 9 days and the dog will not allow a male to mount her. It has been recommended to me that even though some dogs may wash themselves frequently, to protect my carpet, clothes, and furniture, it would be wise to purchase protective panties and use mini-pads. The second stage is called Estrus. The female still has a discharge, but now she will allow a male to mount her. This stage lasts another 9 -12 days. The third stage is called the Luteal stage. It lasts 2-3 months whether or not the dog is pregnant. Some dogs who are not pregnant will experience a false pregnancy. Their mammary glands swell and will secrete fluid. They get nesting instincts and become possessive of their nesting or bedding area. The last stage is the Anestrus cycle. It is a stage of reduced hormonal or ovarian activity. It's the calm before the next heat. During this period, if you are not planning on breeding, you should again consider spaying your dog. Always consult your veterinarian and your breeder for a course of action that is best for you and your dog.

Can a female dog produce milk when she have never been pregnant?

My dog went into her first heat on May 28, 2006. The possibility of a male mating with her is almost impossible. Assuming optiminal fertilization time of 10 days and gestation of 64 days, that brings us to August 10, 2006. Her nipples are now swollen and producing a small amount of milk. She abdomen looks normal. Has anyone ever heard of a female dog producing milk and never being pregnant?

Yes. Its called a phantom pregnancy. You can get medication from your vet to stop her lactating.

how old a female dogs when they get there period??

my puppy is 18 weeks how old are they usually when they get there period??? does the diaper method actually work?? i just want to be ready for it

Check out this site:

http://www.dogbiz.com/faq-heat-cycle.htm

It is not called a period it is estrus or heat.
Those diapers do not really work because a lot of dogs will not leave them on. You should spay your dog and then no messy heat to deal with.

If your aging pet is beginning to have "accidents" in the house, incontinence in older dogs may be the problem.  This is a distressing problem, but it can be managed.  First, it's necessary to find out what's causing the problem.  Second, choose the right treatment.  And third, you may need to change your pet's environment.  Incontinence in dogs doesn't have to mean the end of the road for your canine companion.

What Causes Dog Incontinence?

There are several reasons why an aging dog may become incontinent.  Cystitis in dogs is more common that you would think.  This bacterial infection causes irritation in the bladder that makes it hard for your dog to "hold it."  She may not be able to make it outside.  You may notice blood in her urine.

Dog bladder stones are also common in older pets.  These stones can irritate the bladder and cause an infection.  If your canine friend has repeated bladder infections, bladder stones could be the culprit.

Canine cancer can also cause incontinence in dogs.  If you notice persistent bleeding from your pet's urinary tract, don't ignore it.  Take her to the vet for a check-up as soon as possible.

If you notice puddles of urine or a wet spot when your companion gets up from a nap, her urinary sphincter may be relaxing.  This is common is spayed females.  Lower estrogen levels cause a lack of muscle tone, including in the muscles that control her bladder.

Treatments For Incontinence In Older Dogs

A bacterial infection is usually treated with antibiotics.  Bladder stones sometimes can be dissolved with dietary changes, but may need to be removed surgically.

There are many treatments available for canine cancer, including chemotherapy and radiation.

Hormone treatments are often given to females who are leaking urine.  These hormones help to tone the muscles, and can lessen or even stop the urine leaking.

Environmental Changes

It may be necessary to put a waterproof pad under your pet when she's sleeping to protect your furniture and floors.  "Doggie diapers" are available for pets who have serious incontinence problems.

Natural Remedies For Dogs Can Help

More and more people are turning to natural remedies to manage their own health issues, so it's only natural that they would want natural remedies for their pets, too.  You may be surprised to find out that there are many herbal and homeopathic remedies formulated especially for cats and dogs on the market today.

When using natural remedies for dogs, you'll want to know that what you're giving your pet is safe and effective.  The correct dosage is essential.  Look for a remedy that contains the herbs uva ursi and berberis, along with the homeopathic remedies Cantharis and Staphysagris.  These natural remedies have a long history of use in people, and they're very effective for urinary problems in pets, too.

Don't despair if your beloved companion is showing signs of dog incontinence.  You'll want to start her on a high-quality natural remedy for pets right away.
