How to keep a dog from breaking out of or escaping a Invisible Underground Dog Fence

There are a lot of reasons a dog may break his fence boundary. The first thing I would look at is the dog fence collar. Is the battery good, most batteries are good for four months give or take. Some electronic collars malfunction and will start to eat the battery as soon as two days after it has Benn installed.

In the case the dog fence collar is killing the battery you should contact your local office. Most professional pet systems will have a local office. If there is no local office contact the manufacturer. After you verify the underground invisible dog fence has a good battery check the fit. The fence collar should not be loose both metal posts must make contact with the dogs skin. Thick hair may also prevent contact if that is the case you may need to thin the neck area out a little.

Ok you have checked all that and the dog escapes. Most underground dog fence systems has two adjustments. First is the signal field adjustment, if this is to small most dogs can run out in many cases with out a correction at all. Most dog fence systems have a short delay and if your fence transmitter is only set up to a two foot signal field it needs to be turned up. I would suggest at least six feet on a average size property of a half acre. If there is two or more acres fenced then there is no reason not to have at least a ten foot signal field.

Next is the underground invisible dog fence receiver. Most fence systems can be adjusted for a stronger correction. This means a stronger shock and removing the delay. Some containment systems will have a adjustment on the transmitter or the fence receiver itself. See owners manual for your brand they are all a little different. Invisible dog fence brand is not adjustable by the transmitter or on the receiver you will need to have a tech come out or visit the local office.

If the dog is still leaving the containment area after these adjustments find out where. Most dogs will leave the fence area in the same spot, the driveway is the common. I have found that a tie out in the area where your dog is leaving is very affective. For a period of about two weeks tie the dog out with the fence receiver on. Leave the slack in the tie out long enough to almost get out of the containment area but not all the way out. I know you got the fence so you don't have to use a tie out but a couple of weeks of this is what I have found to be the most affective to break the dogs bad habit and keep your pet at home.

Will this Electirc Dog Fence work?

It almost seems to good to be true. It's only $140 and i've heard that is way to cheap for those fences.

Get a real fence or train your dog to not leave your yard. Those electric fences are cruel and the lazy way to not properly train your animals. I had a dog who was trained to not leave the yard - there was no fence and she never stepped foot from the grass to the sidewalk.

But if you still insist on doing this, $140 is going to be a very poor quality fence. Like the first poster said, decent ones are going to cost you over $1,000.

Seriously though, train your dog or get a real fence. These are cruel.

So you want to install an underground dog fence and avoid paying the $1,500+ that a big national franchise like an Invisible Dog Fence, Dog Watch or Pet Stop installer would charge? Here's how you can do a DIY install of a dog containment system for a fraction of the cost in just three steps.

First, we will install the Dog Fence Controller and test that everything works. We want the controller to be located close to a power outlet and sheltered from the elements, most people put it in a garage. Attach the controller box to the wall and drill a small hole through the wall. Run the twisted wire that came with your system from the controller box outside to the perimeter of your property. Now run the single strand wire around the property joining each end of the single strand to the twisted pair with the provided wire splices. Now switch on the system and check that everything works well.

Second, we bury the wire. The fastest way to bury wire is to use a trencher with a cable laying attachment. This tool cuts through your soil, lays the boundary wire and then backfills. You can rent a trencher at bigger tool rental stores, the cost is modest (under $50) and the time savings is huge. The rental store clerk will show you how to best use the trencher when you go to pick it up. But basically, you will feed the boundary wire through the trencher and tie one end of the wire to a stake in the ground. You will then start the trencher, engage the cutting blade and drive it around your property. Now that the wires are buried you should reconnect the system and again check that everything still works.

Third, we set up the Dog Containment System. The Dog Fence Controller will have a dial to let you adjust the field width. This controls how far from the boundary wire the collars start beeping and delivering the correction. Adjust the field width so that the field width is between one and two yards. A bigger field width will keep your dog safer but also reduces the amount of space in which they can play. Owners with bigger yards and more stubborn dogs should aim for a wider field width and owners with smaller properties and more compliant dogs should head toward the narrower end of that range. Now mark the edge of the field with the provided flags, spaced out at two yard intervals. Perform a final check of the system, and check that the collar beeps whenever you move it past the flags.

pet safe inground radio fence?

I am installing the pet safes inground fence for stubborn dogs and was wondering if anybody had any advice for me on the best way to use this system.I have three dogs one is very well behaved and comes when called she has only left our yard twice the other two are a little harder to handle and when they get out and off their chains they just run and run they do not listen and are very hard to catch.any advice would help

Like ANY non lethal method of physical control, the essence of the system lies in the mind of the controled. Set the system up and make SURE that two things happen, the jolt level is HIGH and the animal KNOWS through much trial and trainning that he will get ZAPPED if he approaches the boundry. If you let him LEARN that the boundry can be breached, either by setting it too low, or by turrning it off, they will learn THAT too.

For your dogs safety, make the consquenceses known early on. Once they are sufficiently fearful of the boundry (the vibration/buzz warning) they will obey it faithfully.

As the city slicker said in response to the country black smiths question of "Hot?" when he picked up a glowing red horseshoe and immediately dropped it on the floor, "No, just don't take me long to look at no horseshoe".

Once they get the drift of the mechanics of the situation, it won't take them long to figure out the boundry lines.

The electronic pet fence is designed to create a low-impact, easy-to-install and effective pet containment system to keep your dogs safe but space-constrained.

3. Collar Receiver Units. A light weight weather resistant collar is the "messenger" part of the underground dog fence system, where the "action" and training occurs. A simple receiver technology, the underground pet fence collar and controller transmitter can be calibrated or powered up or powered down, in order increase the radius of the "beware don't enter" zone along the perimeter line. After training, dogs quickly learn that the "beep beep beep" sound radiating form their collar means "stay away"...or receive a low voltage shock from the collar's pins, which butt up onto the dog's neck. Don't worry, there's no physical harm or impairment caused by the "corrective" shock, rather your dog experiences a startling sensation which effectively trains, and reminds her where the boundary line exists.

4. And Your Dog. No underground pet fence would be complete without a dog or two to complete the system. Training is gentle, lasting only 10 minutes or so on several sessions, with your dog on a leash, wearing the collar...listening for the tell-tale "beeps" near the line of warning flags inserted into the ground, acting as a visual cue. My dogs have a large fenced in area but it is full of muddy holes, what can we use to fill them in? 10 POINTS!

And also use on the muddy areas that aren't holes? It has to be pet safe. I have 3 Shelties and this time of year is a disaster! Even taking them for walks on our dirt roads to our beach is a muddy mess! I thought of spreading hay or straw. I also thought of wood chips like mulch. Is there a paticular kind that's best? What's the cheapest? And what may not be the cheapest but is the best looking? I just want to make sure that if the dog puts them in their mouth, that it isn't dangerous. HELP! Our backyard looks like c**p! Oh, one other thing! Does anyone know about those underground things to dispose of your dog's feces in? THANKS!

I would fill the deep holes with sand with an inch or two of soil on top planted with a grass.
Sand has to be the cheapest thing and you can call up somewhere and get a truck load. You can buy it in bags too but it sounds like you will need a full truck load. Sand will improve all soil for drainage too.
If you spread wood chips down for walking on I would get cedar chips. Cedar will not rot away like the pine chips.
You might be able to run a pipe under the ground that has many holes in it to catch the water and drain it off.
A few stepping stones on a path could look nice too.

Should i get a dog or an electric fence?

My neighbour's cat keeps coming into my garden and I'm tired of using the hose.

I think you should start by putting in an electric fence. Then put in mines just around the perimiter. Then dig holes and put spikes at the bottome and cover with leaves and cat food. Then put down snares and broken glass. Then purchase ten Dogs and place them around your garden in different area's. If the cat lives and get's past all this I seriously suggest you surrender and becomes the cats slave.

Does the PetSafe Invisible/wireless fence system work with weimaraner?

I am thinking about getting a female weimaraner puppy and have heard that they can figure out how to jump fences, dig under, ect to get out. I am thinking about installing some sort of wireless fence system and have heard good things about the PetSafe wireless system. Does this system work as well as it sounds, does it keep the animal within the designated boundaries? Can the dog figure out a way to get out, either by jumping, digging, or running through? Please tell me your honest opinion if you have used this system or know of someone who has used it. I need to know it if works before I bring this puppy home. Thank you.

They only broadcast a circular signal around the transmitter at preset diameters. Unless your yard is large enough to contain the circular containment field you choose you will also be overlaping into the neighbor's yard and maybe the street if you set it at a high enough diameter to cover most of your yard. And your dog will not have access to the majority of your yard.

I have had the "invisible" type of fence for over 10 years now.

The "invisible" type of fence is not cruel like some people on this site will tell you. The shock that it gives is mild (and yes, I have been shocked by it). The shock value is immeasurable. The better type of fence systems collars also give a warn beep when the dog gets near the perimeter well before delivering a shock. With proper training the dog will learn quickly where it can and cannot go. Hence it won't get a shock.

Sometimes a conventional fence is not an option. Either due to the cost of fencing a large piece of property or because some housing developments have restrictions on fences.

Sometimes a conventional fence will not contain your dog at all. He can go over it or under it.

If you are looking for an Invisible Fence brand fence you will have to contact a local dealer for a price to install it though I can almost guarantee it will be over $1000.00. If you wish to install it yourself (and it's pretty easy to do in 2 - 3 hours depending on the size of your property) it is available online (but not I/F brand).

The "invisible" type of fence consists of three things. First is the wire which is buried an inch or two into the ground. This wire defines the outer perimeter of the containment area. You can also block off areas (flowerbeds, pools etc) within the containment area. Some experimentation may be necessary in this. Second is the transmitter which is mounted to the wall indoors and connected to the fence wire, and third is the collar that the dog wears. The transmitter sends out an AM radio band signal that the collar will sense if your pet gets to close to the electronic field. The collar will then deliver a correction. Some of the better ones will give a warning beep prior to delivering a shock. Though it is a strong shock it will not harm the pet in any way. Small marker flags are placed along the inner edge of the field about 5 to 10 feet apart during the training period and removed (every other one) as the pet gets used to the fence.

Huskies are escape artists. We have 14 of them. The only thing that I have found that they can't go over or under is invisible type fencing. Some folks say that it doesn't work on Huskies. They don't know what they are talking about. You can't buy the cheap stuff, like what they sell at Lowe's or Home Depot or PetSmart etc. The best I have found is the Smart Dog 2100 by Innotek. You can find it on line at several sites, discounted for less than $170.00 with 1 collar. Extra collars are about $80.00. The kit has everything needed including 500' of wire and flags, enough to do a quarter acre. Expansion kits (500' of wire and flags) are available for $38.00 and will contain a bit more than an acre. The collars are rechargeable (unlike the "Invisible Fence" and most others where you have to buy the proprietary (one place to get it = expensive) batteries every 3 or so months), has battery backup for the transmitter, run through prevention, waterproof, etc. if you are in an area that has a lot of thunderstorms I would consider a lighting protection module ($50.00). Innotek now owns Invisible Fence brand. Be sure to use heat shrink type splices in the wire if needed. They are available at marine supply stores. Do not use the "weatherproof wire nuts" from Lowe's etc. They will not work for this application. Use an edger to dig the "trench" for the wire. The wire only has to be buried 1 or 2 inches down. The yard will “heal” within a few days normally.

The key is taking the time to train your pet. I have known of people to pay big money to install a fence, strap the collar on their dog and then complain that the fence is junk when the dog blows right through it. Also, you do not mention the breed of dog. Longhaired breeds require a longer contact probe on the collar (these are included with the system above). Training may take awhile, one of ours took 18 months (she was a bit stubborn) before we trusted her, most were pretty good in a month or so and we have one that it only took 3 days! The amazing thing is that we can take the collar off, put them on a leash and when we head towards the perimeter their brakes come on immediately! You can also block off areas of the yard that you don't want them in. When hurricane Isabelle came through we had no power for 3 weeks, the terrain was changed with all the fallen trees, and the underground wire for the fence was damaged and NONE of the kids even tried the fence. As I said earlier, the people who say that it doesn't work don't know what they are talking about. We have 14 Huskies (15 until we lost one over the summer due to medical reasons), all free to run around, contained in our 6 acre yard. And no I am not a dealer ..... just a satisfied customer with 14 hardheaded Huskies most of them rescued as adults. We can leave them outside unsupervised for hours with no problems. However, we do not leave them outside when we leave the house.

It will not keep other animals out including the neighbor’s brats. Neither will a 6 foot stockade fence ... this I learned when I lived elsewhere and was attacked by a neighbors dog in my backyard. As far as people being scared of dogs, well if a 15 to 20 foot barrier field isn't enough, neither would a chain link fence be. Besides, if the pet stays on your property who cares if they are unreasonably scared. As far as a dog running through ... well yes, that could happen, however, with proper training it is unlikely. Huskies have an extremely high prey drive. Where we live we have a lot of wildlife, large and small. The kids will line up along the edge of the field and watch the rabbits, geese, deer etc. They won't challenge the fence. The deer and geese have learned where the kids can and cannot go and will stay just outside "Husky country". Sometimes within 5 feet of the kids. As I said it does work. The key is training. That is the most important part of the installation of the fence.

Some people advocate the “wireless” type of fence. You have little control over the coverage area. The other problem with them is "dead" areas caused by obstructions to the signal by things in your walls, trees and such. Your dog WILL find these areas.

Others advocate tying a pet out “because “invisible” fences are so cruel!” Or “why do you want to electrocute your dog?”, however, think about what could your pet do if attacked by another animal while tied? Where is he going to go to get away? At least with an “invisible” fence or a conventional fence he has a decent chance of evading an attacker or fighting back.

Please note though ..... you MUST not leave your dog out 24/7 with the collar on. You MUST bring him in at night and remove the collar. If you do not remove the collar he WILL most likely develop sores were the probes contact the skin which can become infected quickly opening a whole new can of worms.

Has anyone used instant wireless fencing for dogs?

Does it work like buried wire? Is buried wire difficult to install?

I have used it but found it to be a lot of work. You must have plenty of time to train your dog, don't expect it to be easy. If you have a large yard, plan on renting a machine to dredge a path for you. I personally will never buy one ever again. Good luck with that.

train my dog to stop eating shit off the ground?

i need to train my dog not to eat shit off the ground. leaves kukui nuts wood chips at the dog park. basically shes eating stuff that shes not supposed when i tell her to drop it sometimes shell just drop it but now she's running away as if it was a game.

You need to train her on the command "leave it". Start with a treat on the ground and cover it with your foot. Show it to her and when she goes to get it say leave it and give her a treat you have in your hand. Never give her the treat that is on the ground as that is what you want her to leave alone. Keep practicing this and she will eventually learn that she needs to leave things on the ground where they are.
