We have wanted to install an under sink water filter system for quite a long time. Our refrigerator already has a built-in ice and water dispenser. You know, the through the door model. There is a water filter inside the refrigerator and an external 5,000 gallon filter. Water going through these filters has a distinct different taste than the water straight out of the faucet. There are no chlorine, no ammonia and no metallic aftertaste. It is just good clean water.

For several years now, we have run water for the coffee pot through our refrigerator's filters. It is slow and wastes electricity to cool the water before we heat it for coffee. We thought there had to be a better way.

So, the last time I was in Lowes, I looked to see what water filters I could find. There were many of filters. All kinds of water filters. All different price ranges and different flow capacities. There were too many differences. So, I did what I always do when I need plumbing help. I called James the plumber, who just happens to be my son. He met me and we discussed all the options.

The water is good, but could use some additional filtering. This criteria narrowed the options down to basic filtering to get rid of the chemical taste using a charcoal system. The charcoal system is currently used by our ice maker and it works well.

Whirlpool has a Premium under the sink Filtration System. It is model WHED20. It has two filters and includes a faucet on the counter-top. This specific model has a built in change notifier that, as far as I can tell, is not based on water quality but time in service.

The other drawback is that the filters should be changed every six months. Once again, it is time and not water quality related. The company even provides an email notifier to remind me to change the filters. I believe water quality should be the deciding factor, not time.

We already had a hole to place the water dispenser. It had a soap dispenser there that was never used so we tossed the soap dispenser and installed the new water dispenser in its place.

Several screws were required to mount the filter assembly to the inside of the sink cabinet. A plastic hose was placed from the side of the filter assembly to the faucet. It was an easy snap together assembly.

The input hose runs from the cold water supply to the other side of the filter assembly. Here is where we changed the configuration. The kit came with an adapter that let us to remove the hose from the cold water shut off valve at the bottom of the faucet and insert a new plastic fitting. Instead, we inserted a brass assembly that allowed us to do the same thing, but at a point next to the shut off valve. It was very easy to install.

We then turned the water back on and checked for leaks. There were none found. We next ran the water for 10 minutes to clean out the filters. That is all there is to installing a water filter system under the kitchen sink.

How much time does it save us? To fill the coffee pot it took 1 minute and 40 seconds using the filter in the door of the refrigerator. Now we can do the same task in 20 seconds and my family agrees the coffee taste better.

I have an aquarium in my office cabin and very difficult for a frequent water change. I need to keep fish that require a minimum water changing cycle. I have a bio-filter and sponge filter and air stone installed. The gravel is good quality and so are some aquatic plants. But I can not change water in less than a month.

I have two tanks with guppies, mollys, platys, plecos and khuli loaches. They are well planted and have a bio-filter and heater. I clean out the tanks with a gravel washer and take out almost half of the water and trim back the plants about every other month. The plants are essential as they will help clean the water.

Saltwater aquarium fish are actually very difficult to keep; the problem is that the majority of tropical saltwater aquarium fish and invertebrates will become damaged when being collected, handled and shipped. Plus there are a number of species of saltwater aquarium fish that are for sale which have certain requirements that you as an aquarist will not be able to meet.

1. It is crucial that rather than purchasing new aquarium fish, you go for ones that have been in the shop for some time, around about two weeks or more. Can I use a pond filter on my fish tank attached to my sump?

Would I have any trouble if I use a pond filter (300gph) and attach it to my sump therefore I wont have any out flow issues in my main display tank. And I want to use it on a 36gal saltwater tank.

Pumps are pumps and from a water movement perspective the pump doesn't care what it's pumping as long as there aren't particles to hurt the impeller. In terms of water flow you're looking at 10 times turn over rate from 1 source on your aquarium. I like an 8-10 times turn over/water circulation movement in saltwater tanks though make sure this is well gathered and properly distributed. BTW once you have some filtration on this pump and the head from the sump back up your flow will be a lot less anyway. This pump will work great enjoy.

The maximum number of fish you can have in a pond depends on the volume of the water, the quality of the water, the size of the fish, the species of the fish, the climate of the area and the food available.

If the pond has no pump, filter or other equipment, in a warm climate, you shouldn't keep more than two 15 centimetre fish per cubic metre (two 6 inch fish per cubic yard). You can keep fish at much higher densities than this, but the chances of them remaining healthy are not good.

The better the water quality, the more fish you can keep. With the right technology, fish farms keep up to 200 kilograms of fish in a cubic metre of water (about six pounds of fish per cubic foot). However, as a rough guide, in a garden pond half a metre (one and a half feet) deep, constantly in the shade, with well-buffered water being pumped continuously through an ultra-violet clarifier (to prevent algae blooms) and a biological filter, you could keep up to nine goldfish of 15 centimetres (six inches) length per square metre of pond (i.e.135 centimetres of fish per square metre, or about 45 inches of fish per square yard). To be safe, keep less than half this number so that you have plenty of leeway in the event of the pump or UV failing. In a warm climate, if the pond is in the sun much of the day, reduce the number by half again - i.e. about 35 centimetres per square metre (14 inches per square yard).

Obviously, the larger the fish, the more it pollutes the water so the less the number you can have in the pond. Fish growth tends to be restricted by the size of the water body they live in. For example, goldfish can grow to more than 30 centimetres (12 inches) long, but in most average-sized ponds, they usually won't grow to more than 20 centimetres (8 inches).

Some species need more space than others and some species pollute the water more than others. For example, koi are twice as polluting as goldfish, probably because they stir up the pond bottom sediments more. Also, some species of fish are more tolerant of poor water quality than others. For example, koi can live in water that isn't pure enough for trout.

Climate affects fish activity because they are cold-blooded. Their metabolism doubles with every 10 degrees centigrade rise in temperature which means they eat twice as much and pollute the water twice as much. As a general rule, you can keep double the number of fish in water at 13 degrees centigrade as you can in water at 26 degrees centigrade.

Ideally, you should keep only as many fish in a pond as the food chain in the pond can support. The amount of natural food available will vary from pond to pond. Up to 30 centimetres per square metre (12 inches per square yard) of fish survive well in some ponds without being fed. So, keeping the fish numbers down means you don't have to spend the money or time to feed them. More importantly, by not feeding the fish you aren't adding nutrients to the pond which feed algae.

Filter Koi
I have a 4m x 2m koi pond with 80,000 litres of water,i run a bio filter & waterfall,?

I tested the water & all is spot on,but the water is still green/black,& i cant see my koi,i've tried pond clear & greenaway but nothing clears it up,can anyone help

The green color has nothing to do with chemicals, its a waterborn algae that rises to the surface when its sunny, and goes back into the water when its cold. I got it right on the money, huh! Anyways, no amount of chemicals can kill such a large quantity of algae, so the best thing to do would be to get some plecos from your local fish store. It may take a couple months, but it works. Another thing you can do to get the algae off the surface is to get a protien skimmer - look it up on the internet.

They continue to build up and putrefy, creating a breeding ground for harmful species of heterotrophic bacteria which are pathogenic to koi fish. As stated, the biological filtration process utilizes Nitrosomonas bacteria to break down ammonia into nitrite and nitrobacter, further converting nitrites into nitrates, which is less harmful to koi fish.

Plants now utilize the nitrate and phosphate for fertilizer; if you have not provided an adequate ratio of water plants to koi fish, “hard” algae (growing on rocks and koi pond walls) and “free- floating” algae use nitrate and phosphate to reproduce. The key to preventing this condition, called “algae bloom,” is to provide enough nonsoil bearing plants such as water lettuce and hyacinths to compete for the nitrate and phosphate. Since these two plants are tropical and can only survive in warm climates, hardier varieties such as Elodea and Anacharis will perform well in cold climates. These plants are commonly used in bio-filter ponds.

A bio-filter pond is used in conjunction with shallow koi ponds with small populations of koi fish. It will also eliminate the need for a mechanical bio-filter and a second pump to operate it. The bio-filter pond is located higher than the main pond for two reasons. It prevents the koi fish from eating the plants and it allows the water from the waterfall to be filtered as it passes through the plants prior to spilling into the lower koi pond.

An adequate ratio of plant cover for the koi pond’s surface is approximately 20 to 30 percent. This is a basic rule of thumb and many factors can change this equation. For example: koi fish population, water temperature, and debris accumulating from leaves or over-feeding the koi fish. Original often means the SAME BRAND that the factory ORIGINALLY chose to install. Replacement would be anything else. You can assume that ORIGINAL is good enough (but nothing great). Some replacement are just crappy. Some replacement are much superior (yes not all oil filters are made the same).
