Many people don't realize that their dogs, just like human beings, can suffer from allergies. In fact, about twenty percent of the dogs in the United States alone suffer from one allergy or another, with flea allergy dermatitis being the most common form of allergies in dogs. Other types include atopic dermatitis, food allergies, and inhalant allergies.

Signs and symptoms of dog allergies may vary but are often marked by persistent itching and discoloration of the skin (most common in skin allergies), coughing, sneezing, wheezing, and mucus discharge (most common in inhalant allergies), and nausea, lethargy, vomiting, and diarrhea (common to food allergies and other ailments.)

Over-the-counter preparations and treatments for common dog allergies exist and may be purchased at any good pet supply store, but care should be taken when choosing such treatments. Consultation with a vet is the best first course of action for several reasons. First of all, what you think is an allergic reaction may actually be signs of a more serious ailment and a vet should be the one to determine whether that is the case. Secondly, if the allergy is severe enough, over-the-counter treatments may not be sufficient to treat the symptoms and a prescription strength treatment may be required. There is also the chance that the dog does not have an allergy at all. The last thing you want to do is medicate your pet unnecessarily.

If you do think your dog has some type of allergy, consult your vet. The doctor will be able to perform tests to determine whether an allergic condition exists, how severe it is, and what the proper treatment will be. If the dog has an allergy to certain foods, it will be imperative to restrict the animal's diet to eliminate those items that cause a reaction. The vet's testing methods can help to determine whether this type of allergy exists as well. If the dog has flea allergy dermatitis (an allergic reaction to the saliva of fleas, rather than to the insects themselves), an extreme flea control regimen will be recommended.

Just like humans, dogs that suffer from various allergies can live comfortably with them if they are detected and treated properly. It is important to keep in mind that this is not a time to play doctor by attempting to diagnose and treat a possible allergic condition yourself. Only your veterinarian is qualified to determine whether your dog is suffering from allergies and what course of action to take.

Not many pet lovers are enlightened to know that it is very feasible to have flea-less pets. And the good news is that you don’t have to  burn up all your hard earned  cash on  doing away with these unwanted  visitors on your pets and around your home. You can  achieve it naturally. Let’s  look at some of the things you can do to  accomplish a flea-free environment for you and your pets.

What type of pet do you have? I want you to know that having a flea-less pet is only  possible if you have short haired pets. In other words, long haired pets are haven for fleas. So,  dispose of the long hair. This makes it feasible for you to see if your pet is infected and the work of cleaning him or her is made easy.

Another way to have a flea-less pet is  making sure that your pet stays indoor  every time. This keeps him or her away from playing with infected pets in your neighborhood.  Additionally, it keeps him or her away from sleeping in dirty places that are haven for fleas. It is a fact that fleas thrive on dirty areas and so the best way to  proscribe them is to have a clean place around you and your pet.

Another thing you should look into is the beddings. It is highly essential that you give your pet clean bedding. Wash it  regularly with hot water. This get rid of any fleas that may be present. If you want to permanently get rid of them from the beddings, it is  advisable to use eucalyptus. You can also make use of lavender oil. These are good repellent that will keep them away for good.

If you still  notice the presence of fleas on your pets and in your home after doing the above, it is essential that you clean the entire house. You can vacuum the whole house as it helps  dispose of the eggs. Cleaning your house should not be once in a while. Do it  regularly. This is the best and natural way of getting rid of fleas permanently from your pets and your home.

Flea Control Cats

my cats have fleas, whats the best flea fogger to make sure they die off in my house?

heard from a vet frontline is the best for flea control on cats and that zodiac and hartz is garbage but which fogger is the best on the market so i can kill all these things off and make sure they don t come back?

Ditto for the foggers that are made by Hartz and most of the other crap sold by junk stores. When I really needed to get rid of the fleas and their eggs in my house, I bought the professional foggers sold by my vet. You get what you pay for.

Fleas are a pest that will affect not only the pets in your life but can affect you too. When it comes to fleas, they will suck on the blood of any organism around them. However, they are especially troublesome to cats and dogs because they can give them some intense skin problems. Thus, you will want to try your best to get rid of fleas as soon as you know they are an issue in your pet's life. Organic flea control will help you with this.

If you have a flea problem, you should consider getting rid of them organically. Chemicals can be especially harmful to the environment and can negatively affect your and your pets. Additionally, throughout time, fleas can build up a tolerance or resistance to chemicals. Then, once this happens, you will have to invest in even stronger chemicals, which in turn is even more dangerous. Consequently, not only are pets suffering from annoying fleas trying to bit them, but they have to deal with increased levels of chemicals in the house. Thus, the organic flea control approach is a safer bet than to fill your house full of synthetic chemicals. Nontoxic or chemical-free flea control is not only a safer option to go with, but it can end up saving you money in the long run.

Flea combs are one of the most basic and successful ways to control fleas in the home. These combs are generally stainless steel and have teeth that are close together. These combs are specifically designed to remove fleas and eggs from your cat or dog's hair. Most flea combs have one side of finer teeth to deal with animals with fine hair. When you use the comb, you want to make sure that you check the comb and remove the fleas, placing them into a container full of soap and water. After each combing, the number of fleas that you remove should decrease. If the number increases, then you may need to try other organic flea control methods because the one you are using its not curbing flea production.

You can also invest in an organic flea bath. This, along with combing, can help to reduce the number of fleas on your pet. Invest in some organic soap and wash the pet thoroughly. If you want, you can try and clean the cat or dog first with regular soap and water, but if things do not improve, there are a number of organic flea bath soaps available in today's market.

In addition to the above methods of flea control, you can also change your cat or dog's diet. This can help relieve a pet's itching and irritated skin. There are also plenty of lotions to use to help soothe an animal and reduce the flea population.

Flea Control

Does Advantage flea control really work on dogs?

My dog is allergic to fleas. She is itching and biting herself raw. She can only have one or 2 fleas and she does this. Does Advantage really work?

It certainly does, so does Frontline and Revolution.

You will have to treat your house as well, so get a spray from a vets. Advantage etc will keep your dog treated for fleas, but if you don't also treat your house they will still be about, because most of a flea population lives in the house. If your dog is allergic, it's important to be 100% flea free.

Sentinel for Dogs is an oral heartworm pill using Milbemycin oxime to safely destroy any heartworm larvae your dog has contracted from an infected mosquito bite. In addition Sentinel uses Lufenuron an insect development inhibitor, to destroy flea larvae and eggs.

For dogs that do not regularly encounter new populations of adult fleas this once a month tablet offers an effective flea management system. But, during the first month of using this, as you wait for the adult flea population to die off, many pet owners find it useful to also give Capstar, an oral flea control product that destroys all adult fleas that meet your pet in the 24 hours after treatment.

In addition to destroying larval heartworms, Sentinel for Dogs also controls the adult forms of several intestinal parasites (hookworms, whipworms and roundworms). This means that with one simple tablet you can control three types of pest (heartworms, intestinal worms and fleas). Only needing to buy and use one tablet each month offers dog owners a simple way to save time and money, with one convenient pet medicine.

Sentinel for Dogs has been shown to be extremely safe for all breeds of dogs including puppies. This makes it a good alternative to Heartgard for owners of collie breeds concerned about the collie's sensitivity to Ivermectin. Being particularly mild, Sentinel may be safely used in puppies from four weeks (over 2lbs in weight) and in nursing or pregnant dogs.

This heartworm medicine and flea control pill comes in the form of a beef flavored tasty tablet that most dogs find palatable. No beef is actually included in the formulation (the beef flavor is soya bean and pork derived), making them perfectly safe for dogs allergic to beef.

Need suggestions for Flea control...?

Please give me some suggestions on how to get rid of fleas outdoors. I can control them indoors because I bathe my dogs with Flea shampoo plus I use a flea killer for my carpet. The problem is that I let my dogs out during the day while I am at work and they get full of fleas and bring them in the house. So I really need help to get rid of them outside.

Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

use flea control products on the animal like advantix, or frontline...

also check with your local builders or home centerfor fela control you can use in the yard...

In the house, the average time it takes for a flea to be bor gorw up and reproduce is about 6 days so bathe the dog weekly, and then follow it up by shapmpooing carpets, washing all pillows and comforters and shweets and linens, then vaccum vaccuum vaccuum... daily or even twice a day for 2 weeks, then when you empty the vac, take it out side before opening it....

do that for 4 weeks, and i gurantee youll kill every flea in the house, and can back down to vaccuuming every day or every other day...

5 dogs five cats here, not one flea for more than 5 years....

The age of technology has introduced technological answers to many of our oldest and toughest problems. Fleas are no exception. Electronic flea collars may be the newest weapon in the war on pet fleas. For hundreds of years man and his best friend have been battling these tiny, unwelcome pests - and in many cases, losing. It is important that we consider new technology like the electronic dog collar to help us in this battle, because pets are a necessity that can never be replaced by technology.

In the mid-1900s, time release pesticide combined with plastic collars to make the modern day flea collar. Although they did a good job of reducing bites and irritation on infested pets, the collars were not successful in keeping stopping flea infestations in particularly high risk areas such as kennels or homes with many pets. Another problem was that not all pet owners were comfortable with the collars since the chemicals sometimes caused skin irritation or dermatitis. Since then, alternatives have been introduces, such as topical flea control treatment and electronic flea collars.

It is important to consult your pet's veterinarian before choosing a flea control method for him/her. Although some pet owners may wish to use electronic flea collars, most vets believe that using topically applied flea medication is the most effective way to avoid, control and eliminate flea infestations. Pet owners typically treat their pets regularly with some sort of chemical growth regulator, such as methoprene, that prevents flea larva from developing into adults. Advantage, Frontline and the Program are some of the most popular and widely prescribed brands of this type of medicine.

Pet owners' concerns with traditional topical chemical flea treatments are valid. Often, the active ingredients that harm fleas could potentially harm pets. An alternative to is consider using an electronic pest control collar. Different collars control flea infestation in different ways; some use high pitched or ultrasonic sound to repel all insects and spiders, others produce an electromagnetic around the pet that repels bugs and insects. A newer, cutting edge version of the electronic flea collar uses ionic air cleaning.

Before you buy one of these electronic flea collars, surely you want to know whether or not it will really keep fleas and pests off your pets. Many months of research has determined that these electronic flea collars may not always perform as well as they should. Despite the fact that for some pet owners they seem to be a safer alternative to traditional chemical flea collars, most electronic flea collar manufactures have not provided any proof that their products perform as claimed. Advertisements for electronic flea collars tend to use testimonials rather than scientific research as their main selling point. For some pet owners, it may be beneficial to give the electronic flea collars a test drive, but for money the facts just don't add up.

Advantage Flea Control

advantage flea control?

I gave my cats advantage 20 days ago. They are starting to get fleas again. Should I re-apply or wait ten days? I live in an area with high flea population.

Not really recommended by the maker but my vet says you can if necessary. She says depending on diet some cats expell the treatment from their bodies a bit faster.

Sad as it may seem to the Feline Image Association of America (yes, I made that up...) cats and fleas have been seen together! How can cats get the advantage? Flea control for cats may be the answer! So why, when it comes to flea control products for cats, does it seem like our furry felines always get the short end of the stick?

Even though cats seem to groom themselves religiously, they still get fleas on their adventures through the out of doors. They need a flea control product that is safe for their sensitive skin, and also safe in light of their grooming behaviors. That's where many people succeed with a quality, veterinarian-approved flea control product such as Frontline for cats, Advantage flea control for cats, or another flea killer designed for cats' sensitive skin.

Which product is best? It's hard to say.

For example, both Frontline and Advantage for cats stop the biting of fleas in 3-5 minutes (by paralyzing them) and kill 98-100% of adult fleas within 12-24 hours. These products are stored in the cats' skin and continuously reapply themselves onto the cat's hair, staying effective for a month. The continuous monthly application of a product like Frontline Plus for cats, or Advantage flea drops will help break the flea life cycle, as eventually no adults will be left to reproduce.

However, by the time you spot fleas, it's likely that the adults have already had the opportunity to lay eggs, which drop off your cat and into your carpet or yard. These can stay viable for up to two years before they hatch, so it's important to keep up your flea control program with regular vacuuming to get fleas out of the carpet, and regular use of either Advantage flea control for cats or Frontline flea control products. Otherwise, even if they don't pick up any new fleas from going outside, they can be re-infected by flea eggs already hiding in your house.

Both Frontline for cats and Advantage flea products are meant to be applied as a few liquid drops behind the back of the head and then they spread throughout the cat's body. They will need to be reapplied every month, though. And, Frontline for cats and Advantage flea killer are both chemical pesticides, so it's very important to read the instructions and follow them to the letter. Also, the first time you use the products, be on the lookout for side effects.

If you do notice side effects from your flea control product, I would suggest switching brands.

Fortunately for us, Frontline for cats, and Advantage flea control for cats, both have DIFFERENT active ingredients, so if your cat has sensitivities to one (or your fleas have immunities!) you can switch to the other and see if it is more effective for you.
