Does anyone have a large parrot cage, macaw size?

I am looking for a large parrot cage preferably with a playtop to house a large macaw. Cage needs to be approx. 40-50 inches tall, at least 26 inches deep and 30-40 inches wide. Looking for a cage in the Central/Western Massachusetts or Hartford, CT area, but I will travel a bit further if need be. I will pick it up and pay you a fair price.

Have you checked in your local newspaper? Sometimes after the "pets" classifieds they list miscellaneous things (like cages). You may find something there.

If you find one make sure you disinfect it "thoroughly"!

No, for many reasons. You need to quarrintine new birds for at least thirty days. The new bird should be kept in a room with a separate air source than the room containing the other bird. If your bird hasn't showed any signs of illness after the first thirty days, then you can start introducing them to eachother. You should do this in a large room; set both birds on the floor across the room from eachother and see what happens. If they start fighting, separate them immideately. If all goes well, continue this for a few weeks until they're comfortable on the same playstand or perch together. After about a month, you can put them in the same cage, but not the coonure's old one. If you introduce a new parrot to another parrots cage, the original owner will usually become very territorial and attack the newcomer, even if it knows the new bird. You'll need to get a new cage and put them in at the same time if you want them housed together. For the first few days of them both being in the same cage, you should put two water bowls and two food bowls on opposite ends of the cage so one bird can't prevent the other from eating. Just make sure the new cage is very roomy with a ton of perches.

These parrots often screech and scream rather than talk. Their 12 inch length means they will require a smaller cage than larger parrots, but you and your family may require earplugs. If you train your Sunnie to lower its voice, you will enjoy its antics, as these parrots tend to be playful.

4. Parrotlets: Parrotlets, especially Pacific Parrotlets, are one of the smallest known parrots of the world – about 4 inches in length! They are also one of the most pernicious and spunky of all the parrots of the world. These tiny parrots learn to talk in a voice that sounds like that of a robot. This tiny voice, their size, and the fact that they do not scream, make them ideal for those who need a quiet companion.

5. African Greys: African Grey Parrots are probably the most intelligent of the parrots of the world, and indeed, of all birds. These parrots are not as colorful as some. They are mainly grey, as the name implies. They do have a bright red or maroon tail, though, depending on the subspecies. African Greys excel at mimicry, sometimes learning as many as 1-2000 words. They learn other sounds, too, and may quickly learn to imitate a jet engine if you walk through an airport with them. Among the many parrots of the world, these may be the most demanding. Just like your toddler, these birds get bored and want their owners to provide entertainment. Life Expectancy

People who purchase a parrot, purchase a commitment that is likely to continue throughout their lives and beyond. Most parrot owners are already 20 years old or more, and parrots themselves often have a life expectancy of more than 50 years. Some live to be nearly 100 years old. Added to that long life expectancy, many parrots of the world tend to bond with a single person. If that person breaks the bond in some way, the parrot may die.

Before you ask a parrot to be your companion, think it through carefully. The bird may outlive you.

Which is better a small cage or a big cage for an african grey parrot to start talking?

My african grey parrot is in a small cage and he didt start talking. Some people are telling me that if I put him in a big cage he will start playing and will not learn how to talk. So should I bye him a big cage or leave him in this small cage.

First, how old is your grey? Some greys will not start to really talk until the age of two years. Usually, they will start to talk after a one year.

Second, do you understand what parrot "talking" is? Some people think that their bird will start to converse. More than likely, this will not happen.

Third, has your grey been checked by an avian vet recently? Many birds will stop talking (or not start) when they are ill. I strongly suggest a wellness check up.

Fourth, what another answerer said is true, that misery will discourage talking. If you don't supply toys, interesting (and nutritious) foods, play time, and a large cage with enough space to move around and exercise, this will often cause birds to become unhappy; thus, they don't talk. A large cage is always better than a small cage, even if your grey is out of the cage a lot. When you're away, and the bird is alone in the cage, this is the time they need to keep themselves busy.

Fourth, not all greys are going to talk. Each bird is an individual, and it's up to them if they wish to talk. I work with a lot of greys, and I have six of my own. One, has a large vocabulary, makes sentences on his own, and asks for things he wants; however, he rarely talks, because his needs are taken care of. The last thing he said was days ago, it was to his cage-mate to stop throwing a toy around. He simply said, "no." Two "talk," but it's just a lot of mumbling (which I think is funny as anything) another says, "hello," often and when you say hello to him, and another hardly talks at all and has a limited vocabulary.

I still love my birds. They offer a lot more than just a potential talking ability. They are my friends and my family. I hope that you feel the same way about your grey, because they are special birds who deserve all the love you can give.

What kind of paint is safe for Parrot cages?

I bought a used cage for my african grey when he gets older and want to redo the paint, but Im not sure which kind of paint I can use if any.

I'd make sure that your bird isn't inside first. Have a temporary cage to put everything into while you put them on.

Like other pets, your bird can get sick but unlike other pets your birds illness can become serious, even life-threatening, very quickly. If your bird is acting even the slightest bit ill you should get him to your veterinarian right away since birds can go downhill very fast.

Sometimes, however you can get your bird to the veterinarian right away so here are some steps you can take to help care for your sick bird.

first off, you want make sure that you sick bird stays warm. Keep his cage out of many drafts and you might want to try using a grow light ( the same kind you use to grow plants) aimed at the cage but placed in such a way so that your bird can get out of the direct light if he gets too hot.

If you find that your bird is just sitting on the bottom of the cage and is to sick to even sit on his perch, then you might want to move into a hospital cage for better safety. A glass aquarium can make a great hospital cage. Put a towel or some newspaper on the bottom of the cage and put shallow bowls of food and water where your bird can get to it. Newspaper can be kind of slippery so you want to put something that has a little more grit like paper towels on the bottom so that your bird isn't sliding around.

If you can get a freestanding low perch in the aquarium this is perfect in case you bird wants to perch. Position the light so that It shines and to only one side so that the bird can get out of it if he gets too hot.

if you don't have an anti-aquarium readily available than you can make a few changes to your bird's regular cage. Cover most of it with a towel to keep in the heat input the birds food and water dishes on the bottom of the cage where he can get to them. Also, if you have a freestanding parts put this on the bottom two.

You've got to make sure that your bird keeps up his strength as he can easily become weakened by lack of food and water. electrolytes can give your sick bird some quick energy and if he is a hand fed bird then you might see if he'll try taking a few drops of a sports drink from a spoon or eyedropper. If you have a hand feeding formula ready mix that up with some of the sport strength instead of water and see If you'll take that. if you bird is eating on his own make sure that he's getting enough and maybe offer him a tree like a spray millet so that he can get some quick energy. Make sure he also gets enough water.

If you bird is bleeding you need to provide emergency care before you can get them to the vet. Look him over to see where the blood is coming from. While most others do not bleed new feathers that are still growing can bleed. These occult blood feathers and if you do find that the blood is coming from one you'll need to pull the feather out completely. It's a good idea to cover your birds head with a towel while you are doing this. If it's not a feather that's bleeding check his nails and toes and if it's coming from they are applied to styptic powder to the cut. If you don't have styptic powder handy you can use flour In a pinch.

The key to successfully treating your sick bird is getting him to the vet at the first sign of illness. Be sure that you're always watching your bird in checking him for signs of illness. If you notice that your bird Is acting a little different or even look sick it's best to call your bet and get them in right away. It may be that nothing is really wrong with your bird but it's better to be safe than sorry.

can a cockateil baby once weened be put in the same cage as an adult parakeet?

i know some one had a simalar question, to mine but if the cockatiel is introduced as a baby to adult parakeets would they get along? i am hand feeding a cockateil baby and it will be a matter of weeks before it is weened. i have layed it in the bottom of the parakeets cage and they just look at it but dont do any thing to it.

There is a very slim cage that everything would work out fine, but i wouldn't recommend it at all.
They may have ignored it as they might not have perceived it as a threat, but if you put it in there permanently (as in longer than 1/2 an hour or so), the parakeets, who have no doubt been in the cage for some time, will likely see the cockatiel as an intruder into their territory and attack it. They may not do this straight away, but there is a very good chance they will whether you see it happen or not!
If you had a large (as in quite big!) spare cage, that the parakeets had never been in, you MAY be able to put them all in there together right from the word go, because it would be no-ones territory.
But I still wouldn't recommend it!
If you had a proper aviary that was at least say 10ft long, then there should'nt be too many problems as there is enough space for everyone, and room for a persecuted bird to escape.
But in any situation like this, the most important thing is to PAY ATTENTION and WATCH, WATCH, WATCH! Just because no one has a go at anyone else in the first half an hour of being together doesn't mean that there won't be any fighting.
I think your best bet is to put your new little guy in a cage by himself, set up near your parakeets cage, as he will still benefit from having other birds to 'talk to', even with his seperate quarters.

There are 21 known species of Cockatoos. Cockatoos belong the Cacatuidae bird family and are not considered a parrot. Buying a Cockatoo from a breeder that has hand raised their birds helps to destroy the black market for the Cockatoo trade. I would like to get a parrot, any infromation on them?

Hey guys, so I really would like to get a parrot once I am out of the house which is in a few years. I've never had birds before because of my cats, do you think I should start out with something smaller? i've always wanted a macaw. (: So any links to like information on them, what kind of cages and things they need, food that is good for them, that kind of thing. I'm just considering the option, so I would like to get knowledge about them.

I would not suggest one of the larger Parrots since you are a first timer. The bigger the bird, the more time, money, attention and effort are needed.

I would suggest a Quaker Parrot. They are very affectionate, very intelligent, good talkers, andf lots of fun. Yet they are also much cheaper than the bigger birds, do less damage when ( NOT "if" ) you get nipped, and eat less food.

Parrots are expensive. A Quaker is roughly $250, which is a pittance compared to the price of some of the larger Parrots!
Expect to pay at least as much for the cage as you pay for the bird, and possible much more if you get him a really nice roomy cage to call his home! Avian Vets are very expensive, toys can be costly( and can be destroyed in a matter of hours! ), quality food is not cheap, and neccessities like special soaps or feather conditioners can be kind of high.

There are 3 major facts that you must be aware of.

1. A Quaker has roughly the intelligence and emotions of a 3 to 4 year old human child. Therefore they must be treated with all the same love, respect, and caring that you would expect to give to an adopted child. To do otherwise is as much of a tragedy as an unwanted child who is abused.

2. Your bird will require a LOT of personal attention. A minimum of 1 to 2 hours per day of personal quality time is a requirement , not an optional activity. Neglecting your bird will result in an unhappy, depressed, and possible violent bird!

3. A Parrot is NOT a "Pet". It is a member of your family. It will expect to be treated as such. I am sure that you would not adopt a child and then confine him to a small room, ignore him, and then expect him to entertain you or your friends upon demand. So Please do not do this with your bird!

Do a LOT of research, and know exacly what you are getting into. A Parrot that is no longer wanted will be just as heartbroken as a child who is no longer wanted. If you decide beforehand that a Parrot is not for you, then no harm is done.

But if you have the temperment to give a loving home to a parrot, you will be rewarded with a faithful and loving companion for decades to come!!

Well I bought my cage that fits 2 parakeets for just 10$ and I went to petco and saw that same cage for 70$.In pet shops they usually sell cages for more price because the item might be better quality or they just want to make people pay more.I bought my cage at the swapmeet and the cage seems to be fine my bird stays in that cage for over 3 years now.But if you do buy one at swap meet or wherever make sure you wash.

How big should my parakeet cage be for 2 birds?

I have 2 parakeets and i want to know how big i need the cage to be and what kind of toys/food to get them and if i should let them out of there cage for a little. My house is big so should i put them in a small room? Thanks!

For all cages always, the bigger the better! If there is room for them to fly, it's great. Always when you have multiple birds they need to have room to get away from each other as well as plentiful water and food in case one picks on the other and keeps them from the food dishes. As for toys - try to go for naturally made toys. From pet stores get the ones from Planet Pleasures that are purely organic parts. Parakeets love to chew so the ones that allow them to do so are best and make sure you change up their toys often (bi-weekly and at least monthly) so they don't get bored, even if they haven't gone through that particular toy yet.

Organic pellets are best and are not sold at petshops. There are two brands I know of;

And it's good for birds to get true exercise. Letting your parakeets out is a great idea so they can really strech and fly around. Recall flight is best, so trianing them to come back to you on cue. You can do so through target training;

Just make sure no fans are on, windows open, etc. or else they will die outside on their own and a fan is a dangerous thing for them to attempt to land on.

Not really. You just need to cover majority of the cage. The cage just needs to be dark enough for the budgie to sleep it.

If you cover the whole cage completely, it would be difficult for the budgie to see and it would be very humid.

No, they cannot coexist together in the same cage. Even if they did happen to get along, which is doubtful that it would continue, you run a huge risk of them injuring one another at some point in time.

Macaws are very sensitive to birds that give off lots of dander, which African greys do, so your Macaw would suffer greatly from being in that close a proximity to your Grey. I do have both a Grey and a Blue and Gold Macaw and I have to run air filters in their rooms to try and keep the dander in check, and they are not even in the same room and even still the macaw will still occasionally get the sneezes.
