1. Parrots need daily contact with their owners. – Some kinds need more care and attention than others. Cockatoo, Lorry and Jacob need special care every day. Amazons, Budgie, Conures small Africans parrots need also (though not that much) their owners’ daily attention for keeping up their spiritual tone and socializing.

2. Breeding a parrot could be a very expensive pleasure. – The issue expenses include buying a bird, a big enough bird cages and a first check-up by qualified vet. Subsequently the other required expenses are for food, MANY bird toys, a routine check up, whetting up of the wings (it’s required, not obligatory), nails and beak and sometimes help from a vet in case of emergency. Birds medicine is a very specialized field. Normally, the tests and procedures in the birds treatment cost a lot. Furthermore, it’s typical for birds to express symptoms of some kind of illness when the illness is in an advanced phase (in case when it passes sharply). Because of that fact to start a treatment in this phase is something we often call “emergency help” and as a result it’s more expensive.

3. The parrots are loud. – They live in nocks and make big groups. In the wild they keep contact one another, by the sounds they make when there is no visual contact between them. The bird has the ability to accept you as a member of its flock and that is why the sounds it makes can be interpreted as “keeping in touch” with you. Early in the morning, at sunrise, parrots call the nock to start the new day. At sunset they call the nock again to gather it and execute alighting in order to prepare themselves for their night sleep. These sounds are normal for the parrots and their owners should not get angry and harm them using mean words and to restrain them in those moments.

4. Not all parrots speak. - Although almost all parrots have the ability to learn to speak the human language, not all of them have the desire to start to speak. Some of the most chatty parrot species are the Jacob, Budgie, Yellow-forehead Amazon and double yellow-forehead Amazon, but even for these ones there is no guarantee they shall do it.

5. Birds love to make a mess all around them. – They have their very important place in the wild world because their main function is to “afforest” the wood. Regarding to that, the bird takes a piece of its food and the rest throws on the ground. So be ready to spend a lot of your time cleaning after your parrot. You must feed your bird only seeds. Variety makes birds healthy. Consider just for a moment: how long do you think you shall remain in good health if your food includes only seeds and water? That goes for the parrots, too. Actually, there is a good rule regarding the birds which says: “If something is good for me, it’s good for my parrot as well”. You should try the system with the three bowls: Fresh water, Fresh fruits and vegetables, packed food, nuts and seeds.
6. Parrots need to take bath regularly. – The origin of most of them coming from the rainforests where they take a shower app. 3 times a week, no matter if they want it or not. The clean water they use is very important for their feathers. Some of them prefer taking a bath under the shower with us, others – to be splashed with water (for example with sprinkler for bedewing flowers) or to be placed under the stream of water in the sink. Often they also prefer taking a bath in a bowl filled with water. You should try each of these methods until you find the preferred way of your parrot for taking a bath.

7. Parrots like to destroy things. – In their natural environment they spend 90% of their day searching for and consuming food. Living in our homes they receive their food without making any effort which results in some need inside them to “rediscover” and fulfil their time, which normally they spend in searching for food. If you don’t provide them regularly with different bird toys they could start to use your furniture for that purpose. Parrot toys are made specially to be ruined. If the toy cannot be destroyed in that point, there is possibility the bird might not be interested in it. It’s recommended to replace the toy with a different one periodically, to avoid the parrot to get bored.

8. The parrots bite. – Sometimes they bite the hand that feeds them and the people they are familiarized with. This is not like a dog’s bite. It’s true, they bite in some cases because of aggression but more often it is a result of fear or anger. Sometimes as a part of their daily communication, they “bite” each other and expect their natural behaviour to be tolerated by us. Biting is one of their means of communication which makes many people feel themselves hurt and ignored by their pets. To state that simply: birds have an ability to communicate perfectly. By biting they say simply: “I don’t like that” and this way of their expression is so effective. People often are not that honest and convicting and tend to be resentful, when someone else or even a bird is more honest in its attitude than us.

9. The parrots are not appropriate pets for kids. – They are not good choice for kid’s pets because of their incredible intellect. They live long and require daily attention and contact with their “human flock”. A kid goes through a lot of changes and phases of his/her style of living (school, marriage, building a family, moving etc.) which makes it almost impossible to keep a life-long relationship with such an intelligent creature as a pet.

My Mum's African Grey Bird bites when she leaves the house?

We bought my retired mother a MALE African Grey exotic Parrot (bird) 2 years ago. It was money well spent that bird is her life and goes everywhere she goes. She has no children lives alone and spoils him rotten. It has a purch, cage and numerous toys. He is exceptionally taken care off. He walks and fly's around the home sits on her knee and shoulder. He is rarely in his cage except when it is time to sleep. It talks, does tricks roams the home and enclosed garden. It seem's to have paired up with my mother. She rarely leaves the house but for a few hours. When she does upon returning home the bird will bite her if to let her know he is upset because she left him to go the store ect. He tries to mate with my mother and she thinks he is frustrated. He is very healthy and has no problems. He is 2yrs old. I suggested to get another female to stop his frustration but, Mother seems to think he will stop talking and doing tricks if she purchases a female. Is this true. What should she do?

Don't introduce another one, as that could create more problems. African Grey's are actually quite happy to interact with one human, which is what they do - but equally, they are quite stroppy and controlling and will like everyone to know when they are upset. I have known of one who dislikes everyone else in the house except one person, so they all live in fear - they can be a very dominating bird!!

Your mum has to show the bird who's boss, obviously not by being cruel, but when she goes out, she shouldn't make too much of a big deal about it - yet when she returns, she should give him a treat - but only if he doesn't bite. If he bites, she should leave the room and ignore him. Basically reward his good behaviour (not biting) and ignore the bad.

Worryed about my Cockatile!!?

He his hand raised and about 9 weeks old defenatly male, has a great personality, he is extreamly happy in his cage with tons of toys but the only problem I have with him is that I think he is addicted to sunflower seeds????
What he does is we fill up his bowl with small parrot mix full of diffrent seeds including sunflower seeds and all he does is sift through the seed spilling most of the seeds on the floor and only eating the sunflowers, so I took the time to sift through all the seed and taking out all the sunflower seeds but then he gets demanding and screeching for more!
he wastes all of his other seed, I have to fill up his dish every second day nearly.
What can I do?
And before you say just give him the sunflower seeds, we were told by a bird breeder that too much sunflower seeds would make him hypoactive or even kill him.
That's why I'm so worried.
Please help.

I would never say give the sunflower seeds. they will either kill him or cause soem ill health that will cost a fortune in vet bills.

As said above, try different foods. Lay off the fruits because they're high in sugar & not a tiel food, but ya can use them to start with & not too many fruits in a day. they're HUGE grassy, sprouty, leafy veg eaters so try sprouts, fresh chilli, a touch of fresh herb (all added together.

Also eat some veg in front of him & make it sound really yummy, try & tempt him to eat.

My tiel LOVES his cooked meals! I cooked & mash egg & shell, sweet potato, pumpkin, carrot, broccoli, cauli, mix beans, rice & freeze them in meal size portions. All my birds including my tiel loves this food warmed up for dinner.

Cockatoos are sweet, loving, beautiful birds. They make great pets if they are given the proper care. However, they can be a handful. Make sure you know what you are getting yourself into before you bring one home.

The first thing you must do before even thinking about getting a cockatoo is to consider cockatoos to be like children. You would not leave a child alone all day. Cockatoos also cannot be kept alone all day. They need plenty of interaction. If no one is going to be at your house during the day, then I would not recommend getting one of these birds. The cockatoo is the most emotional bird species and needs human interaction every day.

Another thing you must realize is that cockatoos live for a very long time. They can live to be 100 years old! You will be taking care of this bird probably for the rest of your life. This is also a very expensive bird. The bird, cage and accessories really cost a lot!

Cockatoos need a very large cage. Many people even suggest you keep them in an aviary! The minimum cage size for these birds is 36 inches long by 36 inches wide by 48 inches tall. Inside the cage they will need perches, toys, food and water.

Toys are something that your bird must have. If they do not have toys then they will not get the mental activity they need. This can lead to serious health problems. You also have to change the toys as least once a month. Birds get bored if they have the same toys all the time.

For your bird's diet, you cannot just feed seeds. A little bit of seeds is okay but buy a food that is mostly pellets. You will also need to prepare fruits and vegetables every day. Take out any fresh foods once they have been in the cage for a while.

Cockatoos have dust in their feathers and must be given weekly baths or showers to prevent dust accumulation. If you have allergies, this bird is not recommended for you. Also, the wings, beak and claws need to be kept trimmed.

Every day you will need to clean out the food and water dishes and also wipe off feather dust from the cage bars and perches. Twice a week you need to clean the bottom tray of the cage. Once a week you will need to clean the whole cage and all accessories.

Cockatoos do not do well with small children. Some birds have even been known to attack small children for no reason. If you have small children, never leave them alone with the bird.

Cockatoos develop very strong bonds with their owners. They are extremely lovable and affectionate. However, they are very much like small children and will demand your attention. If you aren't giving them attention then they will scream, knock things over, or even bite to get your attention. Someone needs to be home most of the time with this bird.

If you give lots of attention to your bird, you will be greatly rewarded with a very sweet, lovable bird. Just be sure you have enough time to spend with the bird. These birds can cause serious problems if they aren't given enough attention. Many people buy these birds not knowing what they are getting themselves into and then end up having to give them away.

good parrot toys anyone?

make it not too complex and have fooon it in a way
fooon was actually supposed to be food, and make it so he can play with it for a long time
Mine likes to rip stuff up

What type of parrot do you have? Each one has its own playing style.

There are 11 categories of toys. It is reccomended to have toys of at least 3 or 4 of these categories. One toy may also fit into many categories:
* Noisemakers (bells, musical toys, etc)
* Puzzlers (where the parrot needs to solve a problem... many toys that have food are puzzlers)
* Destructables (toys made to be destroyed and replaced)
* Non-destructables (acrylic toys, etc)
* Food Finders (foraging toys, the ones with food in them)
* Preeners (toys that can be preened, shredded, picked at)
* Push N Pull (toys that have pieces that can be slide back and forth, etc)
* Movers and Shakers (swings, ladders, rings, etc)
* Foot Toys (toys that are held by the parrot and aren't tied to the cage)
* Cuddlers
* Toy Chest (container in the cage where the parrot can pick out foot toys, the toy chest can be made interesting)

Keep in mind your parrot's playing style. A macaw will want things to chew on, so don't just get indestructable acrylic toys. A rainbow lorikeet, on the other hand, isn't much of a chewer, but loves noisy toys and things it can swing on. An african grey might appreciate puzzle toys.

Some sort of swing or boing is appreciated by most birds. A great one is a set of rings linked together (that are large enough for the bird to pass its whole body through) with a bell attached at the bottom. Parrots love to climb then while making some noise.

Bells are often big hits. Don't get jingle bells, that can be dangerous. Be careful that the bird doesn't chew off and swallow the clapper though. For a bird that might do this, there are indestructable bells available (www.parrotrescuecentre.com is one place you can get them).

Foraging toys I think are one of the best. They are the ones you put food in. Some are more complicated than others, and can provide the parrot with hours of mental stimulation. There are many different types. Some people provide ALL of the parrot's food in foraging toys instead of containers (just make sure the parrot is getting to the food and not starving though). For me, I put all my parrot's vegetables, fruit, etc in foraging toys but the base diet is still in contaners.

eBay.com is a great place to look, as well as pet stores and online pet stores are great.

The 1964 musical "My Fair Lady" features a song entitled "Wouldn't It Be Loverly?" with music by Frederick Loewe, lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner. In that song, Eliza sings: "All I want is a room somewhere, Far away from the cold night air, With one enormous chair. Oh, wouldn't it be loverly?"

Parrots, were they able to verbalize, might sing a similar tune: "All I want is a cage somewhere, Strong and spacious, but not too bare, With tender, loving care. Oh, wouldn't it be loverly?"

Parrot Cages

Just as parrots come in many sizes, parrot cages vary from small to large. They come in rectangles and cylinders, plain and fancy. Parrot cages can be difficult to purchase, and the savvy buyer will do research before attempting to do so. Four of the factors to be considered are given here, but you will want to discuss your final purchase with a knowledgeable dealer.

1. Parrot Breed and Size

The breed and size of your parrot figure strongly in the consideration of available parrot cages.

Large birds need sufficient space to stretch big wings, climb around, and enjoy healthy exercise. Large parrot cages are needed for parrots in the size range of African Grey Parrots, Amazons, Cockatoos, and Macaws. Large parrot cages should be made of steel or metal, and have a bar spacing of one or more inches. Any smaller spacing in large parrot cages will permit your parrot to get caught and injure itself.

Medium parrot cages are good for medium size parrots such as Caiques, Cockatiels, Conures, and Senegals. Medium parrot cages should have steel or metal bars spaced 1/2 to 5/8 inch apart. Parrot cages with larger or smaller bar spacing may allow your bird to be injured.

If you have a small parrot such as a Budgerigar (Budgie), Lovebird, or Parrotlet, you will need to look at small parrot cages. Small parrot cages also should be of steel or metal, since all parrots love to chew. Bar spacing should be 1/2 inch or less in small parrot cages.

2. Configuration

The configuration of parrot cages is the size and shape. Since parrots like to climb and fly, parrot cages need to be tall. Even the most basic, small parrot cages should be at least 7-8 inches taller than their width and depth. Dome tops are functional as well as attractive in parrot cages. The parrot will amuse itself climbing across the dome. Wide cages are important for larger parrots, as they will need to fly back and forth. While some parrot cages are built to resemble castles or Victorian homes, complete with turrets, one must be sure the décor does not involve sharp edges or small corners where a parrot can injure feet or beak.

3. Accessories

Accessories can go a long way toward making parrot cages "loverly" in the parrot's thinking. Stands raise parrot cages to a higher level, allowing the bird to see more, and feel more a part of the "flock" in your home. Stands also give owners better access to their parrots. For parrots that crave more attention, parrot cages on wheeled stands can be moved from room to room.

Parrot cages can also be topped with exercise areas, providing entertainment and exercise when the parrot is out for play. Swings, ladders, toys, steps, and more can be included in playgrounds.

The feeder cups in parrot cages should be easily accessible, and should be made of steel, ceramic, or reinforced plastic. Parrots will chew on the cups as part of their exercise, and can readily destroy other materials.

Parrot cages require at least three different perches, each made of a different material. Rope, hardwood, and cement are three possibilities. Proper perches are important to the health of your parrot's feet.

Cage covers are important additions to parrot cages, allowing your bird to get the right dark and light cycle to get sufficient rest.

4. Toys

Finally, all parrot cages will need convenient places to attach toys - and entertaining toys to be attached. Like parrot cages, parrot toys come in different sizes and materials to suit the breed of parrot. Parrot toys do not have to be elaborate. Toys may entertain, and may stimulate your bird intellectually, but their main purpose is to help parrots use the actions they would use in the wild. Toys help them "hunt" food, hide in the "leaves" of a tree, and exercise their beaks to keep them strong.

Toys in parrot cages can be for their feet, giving them foot exercise that helps them maintain dexterity. Toys may be filled with food that parrots must retrieve, chewing away obstacles as they would in the wild. Small mirrors in parrot cages allow the birds to converse with "friends" in the same tree.

Learn as much as you can about your parrot breed, and ask for appropriate toys that will meet the bird's varied needs.

Conclusion: Parrot cages are a big investment. Be sure you shop carefully.

Is my parrot masturbating?

I just moved my conure's wood pot toy closer to his perch, and he has been rubbing his butt against it and making a soft "errrhhhh.....errrrhhhhh" sound when he does it. Is he, um, jacking off? I am not sure he is a male, he has not been sexed. Should I take his toy away from him, or let him do his thing?

HAH!

Yes, parrots do masturbate. So long as his vent doesn't seem to be inflamed or otherwise irritated, I wouldn't worry about it too much. It's just something that they do.

The only reason I could think of to take it away is if he starts to become ridiculously protective of it or even aggressive toward anyone who comes near his cage as a result. Beyond that, if it's not doing any harm then he can keep it.

I've run into this a number of times. It's rarely problematic.

Cuddly toy parrot not as cute as it looks.?

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/21/20090318/tuk-toy-parrot-has-a-foul-mouth-6323e80.html
Would you keep it and have a laugh with your mates
or
complain and make the news headlines.

I loved the quote: "I will be speaking to the manager to make sure he puts it into the correct position,".

Can we guess as to what the "correct position" is?

I'd keep it and take it down the pub!

The African Grey is undoubtedly the most gregarious of all parrots. In the wild, he lives in groups of a hundred to two hundred individuals and remains in same group during the mating season.

He lives in the tropical forest between 50 and 80 feet from the ground. As an almost exclusively arboreal bird he's an excellent climber, but only rarely comes to the ground, so he's not much of a walker. He only comes down to drink from the lakes and rivers around which his colony has settled.

In the forest, his food is rich in vegetable fat and proteins, as well as in vitamin A. The African parrot is fond of palm nuts, of coffee seeds and of palm fruit. His digestive tract is perfectly adapted to this diet. So what do you feed an African Grey in captivity?

Well when it comes to feeding a Grey, remember he needs vitamin A and calcium. As Greys are subject to hypocalcemia (calcium deficiency) it is important to feed him calcium rich foods. Enough lighting and a vitamin D3 supplement will also help him assimilate calcium.

In captivity, African Grey parrots are among the most studied birds and among the most popular with bird lovers, chiefly because of their calm personality, their intelligence, their remarkable skill to reproduce sounds, human voices and their ability to speak in order to communicate. Furthermore this bird is appreciated for his sensitivity and his incredible empathy with humans. It seems he can really sense our emotions and state of mind and react accordingly.

However the flip side of the African Grey's thoughtful temperament is that it makes him more timid than other types of parrots. He seems to classify all humans or objects around him in two categories: possibly dangerous or familiar and without danger. Unfortunately, anything unfamiliar to the bird automatically ends up in the first category. This suspicious nature is chronic with African Greys. They will always have difficulty accepting novelty, whether it takes the form of a new human, food, toy, object, etc. But don't be discouraged, after a while curiosity will get the better of him. The main thing to remember is to give him the time he needs to accept the new element into the familiar and non-threatening category. But be patient: this may be a slow process!

What are the best toys for Quaker parrots and what do they eat?

I might git a Quaker parrot thise summer and i want to know what toy is the best for them and what food they eat ?

And i would like more infomation about thise birds if you know eney

Look for the Quaker Parrot Society online. They are a great source for all the info you could ever want!

As far as toys go, they like about everything! I have 6 of them and love them! They are incredibly sweet and GREAT talkers. All of my babies from these birds are talking by the time they are weaned.

You will love them!

Parrots are noisy birds and if you have made a decision to keep a parrot, you have to learn to adapt to the squeaky sounds that they make. Yes they can talk beautiful words and entertain you. They can also sing like Bing Crosby. But there is also the other side, where they scream and squeak until your eardrums fell out.

Even the quietest of parrots can scream loud enough and often enough to make you wish you had kept a cat instead. The incessant screams can lead to complaints from your neighbors so be prepared to handle that.

So how do you get your parrots to shut up? You can't use a scotch tape to tie the bird's beak. The answer to that is to understand how parrots communicate and why they make all those noises. It is normal for a parrot to squeak or squawk and you have to accept that there is no such thing as a quiet parrot. Parrots can squawk for hours just like humans talk and chat non-stop. Then at the right time when the parrot has had enough, it will be quiet.

As in humans, the more comfortable a parrot is with its surroundings the more it will squawk. That's why when you first take your parrot home it will be fairly quiet as it begins to adapt to its new home and surroundings. Once that is settled, be prepared for parrot noises.

However, parrots don't squawk all day long. They usually do so early in the morning and then quiet down. They will then start the process again around sunset. They will also get a little active vocally after a nap. This is normal behavior which you should not worry about. It is an indication that your parrot is happy with its environment. If you feel that your parrot is noisier than usual, then it is quite possible that you have chosen a species that is more vocal than others. A Macaw can scream at ear piercing decibels for up to ten minutes at a time as compared to an African Grey or a Cockatoo.

As a parrot owner, you need to learn to identify between happy chirping and upset squawks. This is not hard to do once you have lived with your parrot after sometime. Upset squawks have a tone of desperation and unhappiness about them.

Once you've determined the cause of the noise, you can make your parrot quiet by giving it something to do. Like a baby, bored parrots scream more. Give them different parrot toys to amuse themselves and play with. You will notice that the sound will become less noisy and less frequent once the toys are placed in their cages.

Another thing you can look into is your parrot's diet. Make sure that the food is fresh and has not expired. A healthy parrot is not going to be as noisy as one that is being fed with a proper meal.

Also look at the cage and ensure that the parrot has enough space to move about. Parrots squeal more in smaller cages. Let it out of the cage often so that the bird can feel the open space.

As a parrot owner, you have to accept the fact that parrots are noisy. But your love for parrots and their companionship means more to you than little noise inconveniences. What you can do is to look out for factors that cause your parrots to scream more and address that so that the noise can be minimized.

How to make parrot toys?

how big is your "parrot"? Some parrots love to shred phone books. My green cheek conure loves playing with toilet paper rolls.
If you're going to make your own toys, please be careful what you use as there are many things that can be harmful to the bird.

Parrots are very intelligent creatures that while in the wild get to indulge their curiosity by flying and exploring the world around them.  They tend to fly from tree to tree, peck at interesting things and forage for food.

What happens when this creature becomes a pet?  There is significantly less physical and mental activity unless the pet owner makes a conscious effort to provide both.  Parrots toys are a great way to provide mental stimulation and to generate some physical activity also.

One of the basic things to remember when choosing a toy for your parrot is DO pick something that is size appropriate. DON'T get a big toy for a small bird such as a Green-Cheek Conures or Quaker Parrot or a tiny toy for a larger bird such as a Cockatoo or Macaw.  This can be frustrating and can even lead to injuries.

When choosing parrot toys DO keep in mind the activities that your bird enjoys.  Parrots love to chew, they like shredding and they like to peer into nooks and crannies.  The best toys are those that build on these natural instincts and allow the birds to stay engaged while doing so.

Wooden and paper toys are good materials for them to chew on and toy manufacturers use soft to hard woods to provide varied levels of challenge for the birds.  Very often parrots toys include raw hide as it provides the birds something to chew on.

A variety of textures can be very stimulating to a parrot so DO pick parrot toys which incorporate varied materials or pick toys made of varied materials. Other than wood and paper, you will also find commercial toys that have introduced clothing material, cotton ropes, coconut fibers and raffia in imaginative ways so as to provide variety for the birds.

DO pick toys that have a puzzle quality to them as that will serve the purpose of mentally engaging the parrot. Some of these toys have a space where you can hide a nut or small treat because that will give the bird the joy of foraging and the emotional high of succeeding.

Remember that parrots are very intelligent,  and in that sense,  their toys have to serve the purpose that infant toys are supposed to serve.  It is to keep them entertained but it is also to ensure that they get to use their capabilities.

At this point,  it should also be pointed out that you need to gradually increase the complexity of your parrots’ toys. There is nothing more frustrating for you and your bird than to start with the most complicated toy in the market. Yes,  it may be the ultimate combination of texture and puzzle,  but it will be best to work up to that stage.  DON'T drop that on your parrot at the very beginning.

Toys can also be about physical exercise.  You would like to get your bird a lot of flying time but that may sometimes not be feasible.  A well chosen toy can help them work off some of their energy.  DO pick toys with movable parts such as ring swings and varied levels of dowels can encourage movement in parrots.

There are also foot toys which are specially intended for parrots to manipulate with their feet. There may be something to open and some simple mechanism to work which can keep parrots happily engaged for a while.

There is no overstating the emotional value of toys for parrots but there are a few things to keep in mind here. DON'T see your role as merely providing an extravagance of playthings and leaving the parrot to his or her own devices.

DO monitor the appeal of each toy you introduce and replace ones that are not working.  It will also be most productive to introduce one toy at a time and to rotate between a few so as to prevent boredom from over-exposure.

And remember that while the toys provide much needed stimulation,  it will not be a complete replacement of the time you need to interact with your smart pet.  Make sure you DON'T let that happen!

In terms of parrot safety,  DO make sure you select toys that are made of safe materials such as nontoxic plastic, natural fibers and organic dyes and untreated wood and avoid toys that have chemically processed leather,  zinc, lead or treated wood.

When you choose a toy with a rope element watch out for frayed material as this can be disastrous for parrots.  As mentioned earlier,  DO pick size appropriate toys so that your bird will not get a head or toe stuck in an awkward place or angle.

And as a part of your safety awareness,  DO inspect toys that your bird is playing with frequently and replace broken or worn out ones promptly.

It may take some thinking and choosing but your bird will definitely benefit from the effort you put into picking your parrot’s toys.
