2. Breeding a parrot could be a very expensive pleasure. – The issue expenses include buying a bird, a big enough bird cages and a first check-up by qualified vet. Subsequently the other required expenses are for food, MANY bird toys, a routine check up, whetting up of the wings (it’s required, not obligatory), nails and beak and sometimes help from a vet in case of emergency. Birds medicine is a very specialized field. Normally, the tests and procedures in the birds treatment cost a lot. Furthermore, it’s typical for birds to express symptoms of some kind of illness when the illness is in an advanced phase (in case when it passes sharply). 3. The parrots are loud. – They live in nocks and make big groups. In the wild they keep contact one another, by the sounds they make when there is no visual contact between them. Early in the morning, at sunrise, parrots call the nock to start the new day. At sunset they call the nock again to gather it and execute alighting in order to prepare themselves for their night sleep. These sounds are normal for the parrots and their owners should not get angry and harm them using mean words and to restrain them in those moments.

4. Not all parrots speak. - Although almost all parrots have the ability to learn to speak the human language, not all of them have the desire to start to speak. Some of the most chatty parrot species are the Jacob, Budgie, Yellow-forehead Amazon and double yellow-forehead Amazon, but even for these ones there is no guarantee they shall do it.

5. Birds love to make a mess all around them. – They have their very important place in the wild world because their main function is to “afforest” the wood. Regarding to that, the bird takes a piece of its food and the rest throws on the ground. So be ready to spend a lot of your time cleaning after your parrot. You must feed your bird only seeds. Variety makes birds healthy. Consider just for a moment: how long do you think you shall remain in good health if your food includes only seeds and water? That goes for the parrots, too. Actually, there is a good rule regarding the birds which says: “If something is good for me, it’s good for my parrot as well”. You should try the system with the three bowls: Fresh water, Fresh fruits and vegetables, packed food, nuts and seeds.
6. Parrots need to take bath regularly. – The origin of most of them coming from the rainforests where they take a shower app. 3 times a week, no matter if they want it or not. The clean water they use is very important for their feathers. Some of them prefer taking a bath under the shower with us, others – to be splashed with water (for example with sprinkler for bedewing flowers) or to be placed under the stream of water in the sink. Often they also prefer taking a bath in a bowl filled with water. You should try each of these methods until you find the preferred way of your parrot for taking a bath.

7. Parrots like to destroy things. – In their natural environment they spend 90% of their day searching for and consuming food. Living in our homes they receive their food without making any effort which results in some need inside them to “rediscover” and fulfil their time, which normally they spend in searching for food. If you don’t provide them regularly with different bird toys they could start to use your furniture for that purpose. Parrot toys are made specially to be ruined. If the toy cannot be destroyed in that point, there is possibility the bird might not be interested in it. It’s recommended to replace the toy with a different one periodically, to avoid the parrot to get bored.

8. The parrots bite. – Sometimes they bite the hand that feeds them and the people they are familiarized with. This is not like a dog’s bite. It’s true, they bite in some cases because of aggression but more often it is a result of fear or anger. Sometimes as a part of their daily communication, they “bite” each other and expect their natural behaviour to be tolerated by us. Biting is one of their means of communication which makes many people feel themselves hurt and ignored by their pets. To state that simply: birds have an ability to communicate perfectly. By biting they say simply: “I don’t like that” and this way of their expression is so effective. People often are not that honest and convicting and tend to be resentful, when someone else or even a bird is more honest in its attitude than us.

9. The parrots are not appropriate pets for kids. – They are not good choice for kid’s pets because of their incredible intellect. They live long and require daily attention and contact with their “human flock”. A kid goes through a lot of changes and phases of his/her style of living (school, marriage, building a family, moving etc.) which makes it almost impossible to keep a life-long relationship with such an intelligent creature as a pet.

9 things that you don’t know about parrots

A biting parrot is a menace because it considers anyone close to it as predators and is a danger if there are children in the house. Can Your Bird Scream Like Willie the Parrot ?

First of all one should provide his bird with proper food. There are basically two types of bird categories: seed eaters or hard-bills, like finches and canaries, and hookbills like parakeets and cockatiels. Seed eaters eat seeds of different grasses and plants when in their native environments. Providing these birds with commercial seed mixes and leafy greens such as chicory or dandelions, and slice of apple or orange will nourish them very well. Take care of your pet parrot with proper parrot cages

It is a personal preference. Both can be very noisy. A cockatoo needs more one on one attention, though, where an African Grey does not and will do better if you are not home alot. Cockatoos can be screamers, but Greys, once they start to talk, can be continous talkers, only stopping once in awhile. I have one of each, and would not give up either one. Just make sure you get one that has been handled a lot as a baby. Being hand fed does not mean the bird was handled except at feeding. You want a bird that the breeder has handled other than feeding, you will know it when you see it. Just for your info....ALL birds should have 9 hours of undisturbed sleep each night, in a quiet, darkened room, with his cage covered. This is NOT just for African Greys, it is for all birds. Question on aviary and birds that go in it?

I want 2 society finches, one canary and two doves, and a cockatiel. Will they all get along in the same aviary? and how large would it have to be? Please give me any information and pictures on this. If you have any experience or information on any of these birds please let me know. Experience and info is what I need. Easy points.

I would nix the cockatiel personally but the others will get along beautifully. Keep in mind that Doves prefer to be on the ground so you would need something that had a solid floor - not wired, if possible.
But for all of those birds something that was about 18-10" Tall, and about 33-36" long would be perfect. They all need more length than widths - the finches because they are side-to-side flyers, the doves because they need that space to walk around on the bottom.

I would suggest either an Indian Ringneck, or an African grey. African greys are one of the most common birds in the world. They are loved by people all over the world and are great pets. They are a medium sized parrot.

Social Needs This is a bird that needs a fair amount of social interaction to stay healthy emotionally and mentally. Maintenance African Greys are considered a dusty bird because they produce a fine white powder that goes airborne when they shake or ruffle their feathers. This will require bathing your bird more often, and cleaning the cage more often that a less dusty bird. Using an air purifier near the cage will greatly eliminate this dust.

How do you stop a parrot from digging and throwing out her food?

My African grey parrot just started digging and tossing her food around about a month ago and no matter what we feed her she does it. Watching her it is like she is digging or nesting? Any suggestions?

NEXT..pay more attention to the bird....African Grey's are very intelligent and VERY demanding for attention..you have a 50-year companion here....so get used to spending time with your beautiful parrot...and make sure that you set aside time to train this bird...
if you don't have time...or don't want to put the time out...then sell the bird to a good home...and make sure to interview the potential buyers A LOT...

Would putting eucalyptus in my new Senegal parrot's cage be bad for it?

I woke up this morning and - surprise! - my neighbor is giving me her Senegal parrot. I want to make it a perch out of some wood from a eucalyptus tree I have, but I want to make sure it would be okay if it decided to nibble on it.

It seems to be alright to put in. I checked a few websites on Toxic and Non toxic wood, and it appeared safe. I would check with your vet though just to make sure.

Worryed about my Cockatile!!?

He his hand raised and about 9 weeks old defenatly male, has a great personality, he is extreamly happy in his cage with tons of toys but the only problem I have with him is that I think he is addicted to sunflower seeds????
What he does is we fill up his bowl with small parrot mix full of diffrent seeds including sunflower seeds and all he does is sift through the seed spilling most of the seeds on the floor and only eating the sunflowers, so I took the time to sift through all the seed and taking out all the sunflower seeds but then he gets demanding and screeching for more!
he wastes all of his other seed, I have to fill up his dish every second day nearly.
What can I do?
And before you say just give him the sunflower seeds, we were told by a bird breeder that too much sunflower seeds would make him hypoactive or even kill him.
That's why I'm so worried.
Please help.

I would never say give the sunflower seeds. they will either kill him or cause soem ill health that will cost a fortune in vet bills.

As said above, try different foods. Lay off the fruits because they're high in sugar & not a tiel food, but ya can use them to start with & not too many fruits in a day. they're HUGE grassy, sprouty, leafy veg eaters so try sprouts, fresh chilli, a touch of fresh herb (all added together.

Also eat some veg in front of him & make it sound really yummy, try & tempt him to eat.

My tiel LOVES his cooked meals! I cooked & mash egg & shell, sweet potato, pumpkin, carrot, broccoli, cauli, mix beans, rice & freeze them in meal size portions. All my birds including my tiel loves this food warmed up for dinner.

Cockatoos are sweet, loving, beautiful birds. They make great pets if they are given the proper care. However, they can be a handful. Make sure you know what you are getting yourself into before you bring one home.

The first thing you must do before even thinking about getting a cockatoo is to consider cockatoos to be like children. You would not leave a child alone all day. Cockatoos also cannot be kept alone all day. They need plenty of interaction. If no one is going to be at your house during the day, then I would not recommend getting one of these birds. The cockatoo is the most emotional bird species and needs human interaction every day.

Another thing you must realize is that cockatoos live for a very long time. They can live to be 100 years old! You will be taking care of this bird probably for the rest of your life. This is also a very expensive bird. The bird, cage and accessories really cost a lot!

Cockatoos need a very large cage. Many people even suggest you keep them in an aviary! The minimum cage size for these birds is 36 inches long by 36 inches wide by 48 inches tall. Inside the cage they will need perches, toys, food and water.

Toys are something that your bird must have. If they do not have toys then they will not get the mental activity they need. This can lead to serious health problems. You also have to change the toys as least once a month. Birds get bored if they have the same toys all the time.

For your bird's diet, you cannot just feed seeds. A little bit of seeds is okay but buy a food that is mostly pellets. You will also need to prepare fruits and vegetables every day. Take out any fresh foods once they have been in the cage for a while.

Cockatoos have dust in their feathers and must be given weekly baths or showers to prevent dust accumulation. If you have allergies, this bird is not recommended for you. Also, the wings, beak and claws need to be kept trimmed.

Every day you will need to clean out the food and water dishes and also wipe off feather dust from the cage bars and perches. Twice a week you need to clean the bottom tray of the cage. Once a week you will need to clean the whole cage and all accessories.

Cockatoos do not do well with small children. Some birds have even been known to attack small children for no reason. If you have small children, never leave them alone with the bird.

Cockatoos develop very strong bonds with their owners. They are extremely lovable and affectionate. However, they are very much like small children and will demand your attention. If you aren't giving them attention then they will scream, knock things over, or even bite to get your attention. Someone needs to be home most of the time with this bird.

If you give lots of attention to your bird, you will be greatly rewarded with a very sweet, lovable bird. Just be sure you have enough time to spend with the bird. These birds can cause serious problems if they aren't given enough attention. Many people buy these birds not knowing what they are getting themselves into and then end up having to give them away.

Will my parrot like spicy foods?

I've been wondering if I should give my bird spicy foods. I know that in Pakistan, my cousins have parrots and they LOVE to eat pure spice!! I've been hesitant about giving my bird spice b/c idk if its healthy or not. Does anyone give their bird spicy foods? Should I? My bird is a half moon conure.

Although you cannot dial 911, you should have your Avian Veterinarian's phone number close at hand. When a bird is sick, he or she hides it well because in nature, the flock, out of fear of disease, might harm a bird that appears ill so as to protect the flock from all becoming sick.

Therefore, by the time you notice signs of illness in your parrot, the bird may have already been sick for some time. Be in touch with your bird's personality and characteristics that are "normal", so that you will recognize any signs of "abnormal" behavior.

What should you watch for as "abnormal" behavior?

• Respiratory distress of any kind, difficulty breathing.
• Lack of appetite. You may notice food untouched or clean water that normally is used to soak food in.
• Sleeping and "puffed" up. The bird will always have his eyes closed when you walk by, or does not open his eyes as quickly as usual, so that you notice that he's sleeping a lot. He has a "puffy" appearance.
• He sits hunched on his perch or goes to the bottom of the cage and does not perch and his feathers appear fluffy, not smooth.
• He's quiet, not talking or calling.
• You may see runny droppings or lack of droppings in the cage bottom.
• You should always be aware if you notice nasal discharge or runny eyes and any vomiting should alert you although regurgitation is not always a sign of disease. Regurgitation can actually be a sign of "affection" or courtship behavior. However, vomiting is much messier in general and is not as solid as regurgitation. The bird will shake his head and therefore "spray" when he is vomitting, as opposed to a more solid pile deposited in the cage or on you.

In addition to illness, any trauma should be evaluated by a Vet, in addition to any abnormal swelling or growth on your bird. If your bird were to suffer a seizure, prompt Avian Veterinary care is required as it would be for any bleeding the bird suffers. In a female bird, reproductive issues can develop such as egg binding or continual egg laying, and these too require a call to your Vet.

Establish a relationship with your Vet so that if you need him in an emergency situation, he knows you, and your bird. He should have a well bird weight on file for your pet and that's the best place to start when examining a bird who is ill. If you believe you have a sick bird, do not wait. Prompt medical attention is a life saver. But is also a good idea to have a birdy first aid kit.

Your birdy first aid kit can be purchased complete with many items that you might need in case of an emergency. However, you can also put one together on your own. It should always include the following items:

Styptic Powder This should stop any bleeding from a broken blood feather, toenail, or injury. I also keep Liquid Band Aid on hand. I use Bandaid Brand as it has little smell. NO, THIS IS NOT THE BEST THING FOR A BIRD TO SMELL OR CHEW, but when your bird is in an emergency situation with bleeding, it does work and may be necessary when styptic powder won't stop the bleeding. If it's a smaller bleed, and you do not have styptic on hand, I recommend you try flour or cornstarch in an emergency.

Heat Pad or Lamp Heat is very medicinal to birds and a sick bird may not be able to maintain his own body temperature until you can reach medical care. Ideally, some type of tub or small cage works best. Be sure the bird still has access to food and water easily. MONITOR how you provide heat so that you do not overheat your bird.

Bandage Material This can be used to apply pressure to a wound until you reach medical care.

You might also want to have close by a TOWEL to be used if it is necessary to restrain the bird.

Something to sanitize a wound such as IODINE or BETADYNE.

And it's always recommended to have an adequate BIRD SAFE CARRIER ready, should you need to travel to your Vet's office, or to quickly get your bird out of your house should an environmental emergency develop.

BE PREPARED: just like with children, emergencies with our pets happen when we least expect it!

Okay lets go through it

Hyacinth macaws are definitely one of the most majestic birds you could ever have. When people come over they'll be amazed to see how beautiful and exotic they look.

Compared to other macaws they aren't very aggressive or as lousy. Doesn't mean they can't be both. But be careful these birds are extremely strong. They can bite through the welding of a normal cage if they wanted to. Not to mention they what they could do to a child's finger. Even when they are tamed they sometimes can do some serious damage with not even trying.

If you get one of these they will need to be from a very good breeder that taught the bird from a young age it is not okay to bite. This is because some people have a bad habit of letting birds bite them while they are little like paying with it. Then when it gets big and strong it won't be so fun anymore.

Cockatoos now, personally to me a cockatoo doesn't look amazing or exotic. Although it is a beautiful bird none the less. I want to tell you not to even consider these because they are known for being the loudest bird. But besides from that they are a nice family bird that aren't as strong as the other 2 birds are. So they would be a easier bird to train compared to the other 2 because of this.

Congo African Greys, The nice things i can say about this bird is they are known for being the smartest bird in the world. But they are very unpredictable. Being your best friend one second and crazy the next. Of course i am not speaking for all of them there that is just a little known fact. Because of this i can't recommend them for children at all.

Another gr8 thing about these birds is they are one of the best speakers of all. They love coping what you say and you can teach them some nice phrases. Or even to ask for things. I seen african greys say things like, can i have apple, lets play, and such things like that.

All of those birds have a very long live and are a big commitment. The biggest thing thou i can't recommend any of them as a family pet. All of them have a very strong bite and can do some damage. Also they all would need to get there nails trimmed down because they naturally have very sharp claws.

If you want a nice family bird, something small like a indian ringneck, cockatiel. Or a miniature macaw which is something you mite really like. Since they are smaller, just as good as talking, very smart, make less noise, and bite are not as strong. Also they are very playful. Parrots are noisy birds and if you have made a decision to keep a parrot, you have to learn to adapt to the squeaky sounds that they make. Yes they can talk beautiful words and entertain you. They can also sing like Bing Crosby. But there is also the other side, where they scream and squeak until your eardrums fell out.

Even the quietest of parrots can scream loud enough and often enough to make you wish you had kept a cat instead. The incessant screams can lead to complaints from your neighbors so be prepared to handle that.

So how do you get your parrots to shut up? You can't use a scotch tape to tie the bird's beak. The answer to that is to understand how parrots communicate and why they make all those noises. It is normal for a parrot to squeak or squawk and you have to accept that there is no such thing as a quiet parrot. Parrots can squawk for hours just like humans talk and chat non-stop. Then at the right time when the parrot has had enough, it will be quiet.

As in humans, the more comfortable a parrot is with its surroundings the more it will squawk. That's why when you first take your parrot home it will be fairly quiet as it begins to adapt to its new home and surroundings. Once that is settled, be prepared for parrot noises.

However, parrots don't squawk all day long. They usually do so early in the morning and then quiet down. They will then start the process again around sunset. They will also get a little active vocally after a nap. This is normal behavior which you should not worry about. It is an indication that your parrot is happy with its environment. If you feel that your parrot is noisier than usual, then it is quite possible that you have chosen a species that is more vocal than others. A Macaw can scream at ear piercing decibels for up to ten minutes at a time as compared to an African Grey or a Cockatoo.

As a parrot owner, you need to learn to identify between happy chirping and upset squawks. This is not hard to do once you have lived with your parrot after sometime. Upset squawks have a tone of desperation and unhappiness about them.

Once you've determined the cause of the noise, you can make your parrot quiet by giving it something to do. Like a baby, bored parrots scream more. Give them different parrot toys to amuse themselves and play with. You will notice that the sound will become less noisy and less frequent once the toys are placed in their cages.

Another thing you can look into is your parrot's diet. Make sure that the food is fresh and has not expired. A healthy parrot is not going to be as noisy as one that is being fed with a proper meal.

Also look at the cage and ensure that the parrot has enough space to move about. Parrots squeal more in smaller cages. Let it out of the cage often so that the bird can feel the open space.

As a parrot owner, you have to accept the fact that parrots are noisy. But your love for parrots and their companionship means more to you than little noise inconveniences. What you can do is to look out for factors that cause your parrots to scream more and address that so that the noise can be minimized.

Most all pet birds need around 12 hours of dark quiet time in order to stay healthy.

It is best to have a certain bed time for a bird because they are very habitual creatures, they like to stick to a schedule.

My sun conure gets very upset if we are even a few minutes late when doing the daily activities.

I can never sleep in at all because he's up at 7:30 wanting his breakfast since that is the routine for my 5 year old on school days. They are very particular about their routines.

12 hours of time in a quiet, dark area is optimum. Your bird will decide how much he really wants to sleep during that time.

Don't forget the cage cover. Just turning out the lights isn't always enough. Especially if the cage is in a high traffic area of the house. They like their privacy for their quiet time.

Understanding why each of the different Parrot species need's certain diets and supplement's, will really help you to make better decision's when buying the correct Parrot food's, the preparation of certain foods, and when and how you can variate your Parrot's diet.

What I usually try to explain to new Parrot owners, is that you should make an effort to find out exactly where your Parrot originates from. Knowing your Parrot's background and the type of region it comes from will make it alot easier to determine the correct food's. Not only WHAT  the food is and what it contains in the way of vitamins, but other things like size and preparation. Hopefully your pet store/shop owner will be able to give this kind of information upon purchasing of your Parrot. It will make a huge difference in the long run and the short term discovery of diets and other training techniques.

The 3 Main Parrot Diets

Basically what Parrot's eat can be boiled down to 3 Main diet groups or categories. And each diet group can also be varied and supplemented according to your particular Parrot species.

1. Seed-Based Diets - Somewhat deficient in many vitamins and minerals -but they are easy and quickly available when needed.

2. Formulated Diets (Usually Pellets) - Usually the formulated diet will cover basic nutritional needs of all species - but certain species will definitely need added or supplemental foods,like fresh foods and other such food that contain the necessary vitamins and minerals (Fresh food has a way of keeping all the natural minerals and vitamins)

Fortunately, these foods can be bought uncooked and prepared by you -or your can by them precooked as well. But they can lose there nutritional value if not fed to the Parrots before they spoil.

As you can see these diets really do cover all the different feeding styles that all the different Parrot species will need in general. Knowing your parrot's background and it's original home will determine the final diet and it's supplements.

What I usually tell Parrot owners, is that the seed's can most alway's be fed to parrot's. I wouldnt call the seed's a full on diet of any kind, BUT, I would always consider keeping seed's on hand. They are great for an instant food source, and will never do harm to your parrot.(Great for a quick meal or if your happen to run out at a bad time)

Making The Commitment To Your Parrot

The best option for a new Parrot owner is to make the commitment to their Parrot for the long haul. Parrot's have been known to live for 60 YEARS! Which is totally amazing. And these are very unique/ special birds/pets. Making the decision to own one should never be taken lightly. I always -I mean ALWAYS - recommend that new Parrot owner's get there own Parrot up-keep/Training guide.

It really will be up to them to start Mother Nature. You can't condition them like you do breeding fish. I had breeding Cockatiels and Finches.

LOL---the Finches would never stop. But it took the Cockatiels a bit to get curious and then to get it right. For Cockatiels I had a nesting box that was attached outside their cage but accessible by a door.

I wouldn't move to someplace that I couldn't take my birds with me to. No way, no how. To give up my birds would be like ripping off my arm...but...that's just me.

What's the real story here? Why can't you take them with you and why on earth would you give them up?

If you MUST get rid of them, or if it's about the money, contact your local pet stores. They might consider buying them from you for resale. I'd not visit Petco or any of the big chains like that. I'd go to a smaller pet store that actually gives a crap about the birds.

What's really going on here. Do you need someone to take care of them while you get situated? Or is it about money? If you need someone to just take care of them for a while, I'd look into that before just offering them up to a life without you.
