To train your puppy, one has to be patient in your ways and approaches. One of the most important aspects of dog training is to provide an enclosure to the dog in the contour of using a crate. However, one has to ensure that crates are not a means to punish the pups or as a confinement for them. Crate training discourages indoor dog potty . It aids the dog throughout its lifetime and helps it is helpful tool for all concerned as well. One can remove the door of the crate also once the dog gets used to it. Vari-Kennel type If your puppy accepts the crate without hesitation, there is no need to use this technique. Otherwise you can remove the screws of the crate that would open the door and let the puppy go inside and outside at her/his free will. This would train your puppy against crate potty as well. Though it may take few days, your hard work would surely be beneficial in a long run.

Wire Mesh type Train your puppy by keeping open the doors of the crate by tying its door to the back. This would give enough space for the puppy to more freedom and would not give him a sense of seclusion and confinement.

Furnishing Crate to make it attractive for your puppy

Toys and Treats: Ensure that the toys and balls that you place in the crate are not too small that your pet could swallow them. In addition, one can put a marrow bone by sterilizing it and filling it with dog treats.

Water: A water dispenser is necessary in the crate and continuously refilled.

Bedding: Bedding is important to make your pet’s crate comfortable and cozy, so your puppy feels like she/he is in her/his den. It is furthermore important during winters to provide extra soft bedding.

Location of Crate Try and place the crate close where you are sitting. This will train your puppy to go automatically inside his/her crate without feeling lonely and isolated.

Introducing the Crate to Your Puppy Train a puppy to enjoy in his crate by: • Keep hiding dog biscuits in the crate to let him find edible treasures and enjoy. • Praising pet when it enters the crate is an important aspect to train your puppy and dogs. • Play educational games with it while training, make it fun • Crate your puppy/dog only when you are at home initially, so your puppy will feel comfortable. Then as your puppy/dog is enjoying his/her new crate you can try short period's of times when you are outside, or close to home for your puppy/dog to be crated.?

Things to keep in mind while Crate training Collars: Remove the collar from your puppy prior to putting your puppy/dog going into the crate as it may get stuck in the mesh wired crate. Weather: When weather is not comfortable, avoid crating your puppy/dog.

Best thing to do with a dog who won't stop eating harmful crap around the house and yard?

Yes, of course, I know that I need to keep it out of his range. But he eats anything so if you think of all the things in your house that you can't keep out of a dog's range, then you'll see that many of those things are harmful. He never stops trying to eat stuff. Just 10 minutes ago he got a pen off the counter and ate 1/3 of it before I saw it. I work from home so I'm always there but obviously I can't supervise him every second. I tried putting him outside but he digs up rocks and eats them or eats the bushes and trees. Yesterday I was washing dishes and took out the garbage and when I came back in with him he ran up to the sink and grabbed the sponge and just swallowed it within 3 seconds. I tried putting him in my work room with me but he kept chewing at the floor even though I gave him a bone and a kong with cheese in it.
I feed him plenty and the vet said he has is perfectly healthy. He also walks and runs 6+ miles a day so I don't think exercise will do anything.

Hopefully this is just a young pup or dog that will eventually grow out of the 'eat everything' phase. In the meantime, you need to employ an indoor crate or pen, where he can be left when you can't watch him.
Yes, of course keep stuff out of his reach when possible, and give him nice chewy toys and treats to keep him busy.....but this is really just like having a toddler, ie, when they can't be supervised they need safe confinement.
Most young dogs/pups need a crate, pen, or kennel until 2-3 yrs. of age to prevent the damage and frustration, which in turn hurts your bond/relationship with the dog. An nice roomy outdoor kennel is a terrific thing to have outside to keep your yard from getting torn up as badly, or worse,as inside the house.

It's true what they say....that ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!!

Be Consistent and Firm

Your puppy needs to know that you mean it when you tell him to stop chewing. Use the "no" command, and perhaps a spray bottle as well to distract his attention, and firmly take the item away. Do not let it turn into a game of tug-a-war, or chase your puppy to retrieve the item. He interprets these actions as a game, and will be thrilled to play for hours. Also, follow the same procedure every time and never get lazy and let the puppy have the item. You have to be consistent.

Have Acceptable Chew Toys on Hand

Even if you take an inappropriate item away, your puppy will still have a chewing desire. Focus his chewing energies towards appropriate items like hard rubber toys or bones. Bones are especially great because they aid doggy dental health, but be careful not to feed your pup chicken or pork bones as they splinter easily.

Exercise

Sometimes dogs chew because they are bored or have an excess of energy. Release this energy by taking a walk or playing with your dog. This way when he comes inside he will be too tired to exhibit destructive behaviors.

Keep Your Puppy Confined When Gone

Allowing your puppy free reign of your house is as good as giving him the keys and telling him the place is his. Keep your puppy in a pen or crate when you are gone. Not only will this prevent accidents or chewing, but it will also make him feel more secure while you are out of the house.

Puppy chewing is inevitable, but it should be short lived. By being a firm leader you can direct your puppy towards better chewing, and save yourself pain and money in the process.

Should I buy a playpen for my guinea pig, or make one?

I'm not a first time guinea pig owner but i've never gotten a playpen for them to roam outside. My question is, with the lowest price for a pen being $40.00, am i better off making one or buying one?

Hi Blake.You really don't need a very large or expensive play pen for your piggie-here's the one I use for my girls when it's time to play,or for some roam time when I clean their cage:

Summer is a great time to finally squeeze in all of those activities that you don't have a chance to do during the school year. Here are 25 fun, cheap, and easy ideas for keeping your kids busy until the school bell rings again in the fall.

1. Map out all of the different parks in your county and hit each one (on a different day) with a picnic lunch.

2. Teach the kids some jump rope rhymes from your own childhood.

3. Find a new trail to hike.

4. Plan a scavenger hunt. All you need to do is list 20 or so items that are frequently found in nature. Then distribute the list to each of the kids. The first person or team to find everything and bring them back wins a small prize.

5. Tour a local factory or museum.

6. Take the kids to a scenic area with a set of watercolors and ask them to paint what they see.

7. Visit a local botanical garden.

8. Call your local public library to ask if they are sponsoring any reading contests or special story times.

9. Get a group of friends together and take the kids to the nearest water park or amusement park.

10. Start your own reading incentive program for the kids. For every three books, treat them to a sundae or a special trip to the bookstore.

11. Check your local newspaper for fun community events, such as local dance performances or magic shows.

12. Explore a new bike path.

13. Each Friday, eat a picnic lunch somewhere new.

14. Teach the kids how to cook or bake something delicious.

15. Teach the kids how to decorate cakes and let them experiment with a few cupcakes.

16. Bake a dozen muffins and take them to your spouse's office. Visit for a bit.

17. Take turns with other parents in your community teaching the kids about different crafts.

18. Get a nice new workbook. Before the school year ends, ask the teacher what books she recommends, so your child will keep up with her studies.

19. Plant a vegetable or flower garden together.

20. Ask your children to research a charity and brainstorm ways that they can raise money for it.

22. Ask the kids if they would like to learn a new sport or activity. The summer is a great time to try something new without the commitment that often comes with starting it for a school year.

23. Assign the kids a pen pal, and encourage them to write notes and letters every couple of weeks.

24. Have the kids try out a new musical instrument.

25. Make an obstacle course with sidewalk chalk and time each other on how long it takes to complete the course.

Get creative and think of your own ideas to enjoy some fun in the sun, and don't forget to spend some unstructured time, doing absolutely whatever you want.

Making a bunny exercise pen outside?

we are making a rabbit pen outside and was wondering if we can use a piece of mdf board for the flooring. It would sitting under a patio (no rain ), maybe on top of some soil or bricks.
Will this be alright? will the mdf warp or break down ?

I have experience of home built runs and hutches

If you are making it like a mesh run but with sheets of board instead then that would be ok it would be like a giant rabbit hutch/run combination.It would be better to use 15mm thick plywood and make sure you either put a hutch in one end for the rabbit to run into
If you put the mdf directly onto soil it will get wet and rot. You should put it on bricks as you suggested to keep the damp out and vermin out.
