Any body trying to keep any pet animal must be very careful by ensuring that the pet you keep is easily tame and you can comfortably control it. The same rule should apply when keeping pet chickens. Not all chicken breeds are the same, thus meaning you have to select a breed that is easy to tame as opposed to one that is aggressive and dislikes confinement.

A pet chicken may not in all cases double up as a good layer or even a good source of meat. Many pet chicken breeds are mostly small. The Rhode Island reds or whites will give good eggs and can serve as good pets owing to their friendly nature to human beings. It is however important to note that their roosters are often very aggressive and so should be avoided unless you do not mind dealing with their aggression. Other than their roosters, this breed could provide the best choice because they are sizeable and are prolific layers; this combination will guarantee you a steady supply of eggs besides being pets.

The Sussex breed is another good pet breed especially in back yard flocks, it is hardy and can survive harsh conditions and can adapt to confinement quite easily. The other breed that enjoys confinement is the Silkie, their fluffy appearance appeal to children. In addition, they enjoy being handled as well as breeding other birds' chicks. Some chickens may simply be very attractive to look at because of their feathers and general appearance even though they may not be very friendly. In this group would be the Wyandotte that also lay good brown eggs.

The polish breed is very interesting to look at, with their signature tuff of feathers on their head. They are in turn very friendly and lay very white eggs. Another characteristic that would make them good pets is their adaptation to confinement. Another very popular breed is the Plymouth Rock, which have proven to be very friendly and with outstanding beautiful features. They are mainly black and white striped and lay brown eggs. They are very tamable.

An outstanding breed of chickens to keep as pet would be the jersey giant. Contrary to its size, the bird is very gentle and makes a very good mother. Their large size also reflects in the eggs they lay, they are the largest chicken breed available and lay the largest brown chicken eggs. The cochins is a very beautiful bird and lays large brown eggs, it is very gentle and can make a good mother. It is used for bird shows.

In general, most chickens can make good pets but for the case of children who may want to be very close with the birds, it is important to pick some of the very gentle breeds that do not mind the kids touching them. All roosters will be very gentle until their hormones kick in., once they start fighting over territory they get so aggressive and children cannot tame them. Rooster will also be very loud as they crow at the start of every dawn; if you cannot withstand the loudness, you should completely avoid them when thinking of keeping pet chickens.
