What is the best Harness 4 a dog?

I have a beagle and are harness suppose 2 be safer and less harmful? also which is better and last long Mesh Harness, Mesh and cloth harness,nylon harness with buckle, nylon harnnes with snap, or normal harness? she's tied up and would b wearing it always.

If you are going to leave a harness on a dog ALL THE TIME, while it is ALWAYS tied up, someone is going to have to be committed to checking the dog every few days to make sure there are not places on the dog where the harness is causing chafing. Which leads to sores, which can lead to maggots.

I am not a fan or tying out dogs or of tying them out with a harness.
Any what if the dog chewed it? Any material that the dog could NOT chew would be more likely to cause sorness.

Is there anything more frustrating for a dog walker than to have the animal constantly pulling and trying to leap ahead? Particularly if that dog is a big, powerful breed, like an English bull terrier.

The dog that pulls its walker to greet every other animal it meets can drain energy and resources all round.  It can do untold physiological damage to his delicate throat and neck areas. Dog-walking should be fun both for the animal and its walker.  Pulling on the lead turns dog-walking from a pleasure to a pain.  Yet training a dog to walk to heel is not so difficult.

To help the long-term puller mend his ways, various types of harness have been invented, because it is generally believed that the harness gives much better control and is safer. It takes pressure away from the dog and stress away from the human.

The Sporn Non-Pull harness is available in sizes to suit all dogs and comes strongly recommended by its inventor Dr. Roger Mugford. Dr. Mugford is the UK's leading animal psychologist and founder of The Company of Animals Ltd.  He is also the inventor of the Lupi harness and the Halti head-collar.

The Sporn Non-Pull harness is easy to use and so simple to fit, a child could do it.  Another major point in its favour is that it is so comfortable for the dog.  It has padded sleeves and a  mesh cover for the chest area.  Its sliding security cord lock ensures that the dog cannot possibly extricate himself from it.  Using this harness makes dog-walking a pleasure.  No more pulling, no more tugs of war between dog and walker. Taking the dog for a walk becomes fun again.

The Lupi harness is designed as a figure-of-eight, which converts the dog's forward movement to an upward lift.  It is, he adds, also ideal for dogs with spinal problems.

The Halti head collar, which is currently being sold all over the world is a real best-seller, but the doctor advises against using it on English bull terriers or other dogs with short noses.

Why do dogs want to pull on the lead at all? Because they're excited, say the experts.  They're outside and they want to escape, to run free.

Confrontation is another possible cause.  They've seen another dog, a cat, or maybe a squirrel scaling a tree, and they want to chase it.  Or possibly to display dominance.

The thing to do is stop walking the minute the dog starts pulling.  Make him sit.  Wait a few minutes for him to calm down.  Then walk on.  The more often he pulls, the more often you should stop. In time, he'll get the message and hopefully, he will stop pulling

I need to find a bright yellow-green dog collar-where?

Alright-so I've been ALL OVER-petsmart, tractor supply, cabela's, soldans pet store, redbird pet store, and all the other stores in my town and other towns as well. I want to get a neon yellow-greenish dog collar but I don't want a plastic coated one since that might not be very comfortable on my dog. I'm looking for the traditional collar style-like woven nylon. I have looked online also. Am I missing something? I have seen them before, and never bought one so now that I'm looking for one, of course I can't find what I'm looking for...you know how that goes... Help! Thanks =)

Many pet owners enjoy a stroll through the neighborhood with their pooch and as most municipalities require your pooch to be on a leash it is one of the first purchases to make when you get a dog. Your breeder or Veterinarian may have talked to you about a training lead for your dog; your friends and family may have mentioned a leather leash or nylon leash. With so many choices, it can be confusing on which type of dog leash you should have.

There are two basic types of dog leashes, those for training, and those for walking. Within these two types of selections, the choices can seem endless. As a pet owner, you should have one of each. The best dog-training leash is a long nylon lead usually 25 feet long.

Dog training leads are perfect for teaching your dog the "come" command. In a small quiet room in your house with little to distract your dog start saying the word "come." The first few times you say the command your dog is likely to come right to you. The first time he/she does not, slowly walk over and attach the training leash. Repeat the command while giving a short tug on the leash gently pulling your dog toward you. Continue for only 15 to 20 minutes; continue the lessons daily until your dog comes on command.

The standard leash comes in leather or nylon. These leashes are the most common and therefore can offer a lot to style and decoration from diamond studded to Coach® leather. Nylon leashes can have a reflective strip for safety when walking at night or early morning. These dog leashes come in a six-foot length, which is what most municipalities require. The standard leash is the dog lead of choice when it comes to dog leash training.

Standard leashes offer diversity in not only textures, colors, but also come in single or double leash style. When you begin dog leash training for the first time with your four-legged family member it is best to start with only one dog. Leash training requires both hands on the leash; one through the looped end and the other about half way down the lead. This helps you keep the right placement of the dog-training collar on your dog's neck, which should be just below the ears and not half way down your dog's neck. Incorrect collar placement can cause serious damage to your pooch, especially during the first stages of dog leash training.

A bicycle dog leash is a specialty lead designed for those owners who enjoy taking their pooch along for a daily ride. The leash is an aluminum tube with a plastic coated cable running down through the tube, which extends out of the tube end a couple of feet to allow for ease of movement for your dog. One end connects to the bike while the other to your dog's collar keeping them safely away the bike.

Retractable dog leashes have become quite popular over the last few years. From a training standpoint, these leashes offer no help and are not a good choice during dog leash training lessons. They are however; wonderful for those dogs that are already leash trained and have successfully learned the "come" and "heel" commands. When you are in an open area your dog can have the freedom to explore while still safely attached to a leash should anything unexpected happen.

Lastly, the martingale leash sometimes referred to as a "show-leash" as it is the dog leash of choice by show dog handlers while in the ring. They are an all-in-one collar and leash, offering the benefit of a choke collar without the possibility of choking and a leash for walking or jogging. The collar portion of the lead rides high on your dog's neck, just behind the ears connected with a small chain that pulls tight when you pull on the leash but stops short of actually choking. A great choice for the jogger in the family who likes the security of having the dog along for the run.

As you can see from the choices and their functions, dog leashes play an important role in your dog's life. Your collection should at least include two; one for walking and leash training and the other for teaching basic obedience dog training. Having multiple dog leashes to fit your individual life style is up each pet owner and no matter what your plans are from training to jogging there is a dog leash to accomplish the task.

Soft Claws Paws

How can I tell if I put soft claws / paws on my cat correctly?

I just put some soft claws on my 5 month old cat. Some of the caps are hidden between his toes, while others are visible. Some of the visible ones are a little crooked. Other cats ive seen with the caps have had all of them visible and straight. He isnt bothered by the caps, though he has been licking his paws more often and now shakes his paws every once in a while. I hope im not hurting him. Can anyone with experience help me out?

Soft claws should be cut to fit the size of your kitten's claws. If not, then they will not stick properly. They may be too long if he's shaking his paws and may be uncomfortable. You can check them and see if some of them will fall off, then cut the length. Also, you should trim his nails. Just snip off the ends/tips with toe nail clippers. Be CAREFUL not to cut too short, you can cut the little vein that is in there and hurt them. Squeeze some of the glue inside the soft claw, insert his claw into it and squeeze enough to secure. I usually hold the cat for 5 minutes to let the claws set. This way they can't pull them off. If the length does need to be shortened, they will fall off within a week. I hope this helps!

Before you accuse me of being one of those whiney, wimpy pet owners, give me a chance. For I, too, just like you, once believed that declawing a cat was no big deal. I mean - c'mon - so he gets some nails clipped off, so what? He'll get over it! My carpet and furniture will be saved and everybody's happy.

Not so.

The Cold, Hard Truth

First of all, did you know declawing is illegal in nearly two dozen countries around the world? And for good reason. Despite popular belief, cat claws are not like our nails. Each claw is actually closely adhered to the bone, and that means that the last bone of the cat's claw has to be removed - kind of like amputating the last joint of your cat's toes. Not exactly a simple manicure.

It's really not a humane act. It is a painful surgery, with a painful recovery period, in which time the cat will still have to use its feet to walk, jump, and scratch in the litter box - regardless of his pain.

Aside from the physical pain, losing claws is a huge psychological ordeal for a cat. A declawed cat feels defenseless because one of her main ways of protecting herself is suddenly gone.

You might be thinking, "Defenseless?!? My cat's a spoiled, indoor kitty who never has to worry about predators!" It doesn't matter. The cat's instincts are still there - whether it's an indoor cat or not. Declawing can cause a once-friendly cat to become so habitually fearful that he hides or hisses any time an unfamiliar face appears. He may even resort to biting when he feels threatened. Declawed cats may also suddenly refuse to use the litter box, possibly because the postoperative pain in their paws gets worse when they dig in their litter, and the association makes them avoid the box.

So, what's a frustrated feline lover with tattered furniture to do? Before you throw your hands up in the air, there are some solutions. I'll be honest, these products I picked up at PETCO work for a lot of cat owners, but not for everybody. At least give them a shot:

• Sisal Posts/Scratchers - These durable, scratchy surfaces are treated with catnip to attract your kitty. They help your cat groom his claws while saving your carpet and furniture.

• Soft Claws Nail Caps - Soft plastic nail caps glue over your cat's nails. They're easy to apply at home, comfortable for your cat, and won't interfere with the normal extension and retraction of his claws. They come in all different sizes.

• Millers Forge Cat Claw Scissors - Clip your cat's claws frequently to keep them from getting too long and sharp. (But only if they're indoor cats!) These scissors come in all styles and sizes.

If none of these ideas work, ask your vet or a fellow cat owners for other solutions. Your cat will thank you for it!

I need a soft carrier for a dog on united airlines

My husband and I will be traveling on united airlines. We are bringing our two dogs. They are going under our seats. The airline told me the carriers cannot be no more then 17x10x10. What size dog crate for a 40-50 labradoodle?

I'm looking for a soft travel crate that is easier to collapse and carry than the large metal one we use at home. So many of the crates I have seen online just list dimensions and don't recommend a size for a specific weight of dog.

(It really does not matter what type of dog you have and I am not going to bad mouth you or your dog. I have seen Labradoodles and I even know a breeder. They are cute dogs) is your dog 40-50 lbs?? if it is are you going to pick up the crate and carry it??if not and you are going to just have it on the seat of your car you need to measure your dogs length and add some (enough for your dog to turn around comfortably) that's about it. you can also go to most pet stores with your dog and try them out. your dog just needs enough room to turn around. smile good luck
