How to Stop a Cat Climbing Curtains

If you're cats are anything like mine, chances are they've tried to climb the curtains at least once.  Constantly replacing your curtains costs money and you don't want to buy a new pair only for your cat to destroy them again.  There are ways to train a cat to stop climbing your curtains without actually harming them.  If you want to know how to train your cat to stop climbing curtains, then read on.

I'm going to suggest using a principle called classical conditioning to make your cat associate climbing the curtains with something unpleasant, such as a loud bang or other noise.

Classical conditioning has been used for many years in all aspects of life, for example you are bombarded with it every day in advertising. Its main use is to make either a human or pet associate a pleasant or unpleasant situation with a behaviour that you'd prefer to encourage or discourage.  So by using classical conditioning we will make your cat associate the action of climbing the curtains with an unpleasant noise.

The most effective thing that I found train a cat to stop climbing the curtains is with a rolled up newspaper. Make sure that you have a newspaper handy in the area where they tend to climb curtains so that every time you see the attempting to climb the curtains, you will be able to bang the newspaper on a hard surface to make a loud noise.  This should distract them from either climbing the curtains or if they're half way up the curtains you should be to get their attention and demand and in a firm, low voice to get down.  If you find your cat ignores your request to get down, then you can hit the paper on something hard (definitely not the cat!) again until they jump off the curtains. This is your first step in telling your cat that climbing the curtains is unacceptable behaviour.

You must repeat this action every time your cat tries to climb or manages to climb the curtains, otherwise you'll be sending your cat mixed signals and you will not be able to train your cat to stop doing this behaviour.

Once this has been done successfully, you'll be able to show your cat the paper without banging it when if you spot them considering climbing the curtains or are half way up the curtains, and they will actually stop and come down.  I used to only have to say "I'll get the paper" and my youngest cat would get off the curtains.

You may find that you have successfully managed to train you're not to climb the curtains however your cat just like children will try to push your limits on occasion and you may find that they start to climb the curtains again. If this happens just bring out the newspaper again in the next time your cat considers climbing curtains bang it on a hard surface as this will quickly remind them that this behaviour is not acceptable.

I hope this has helped you with your cat training you can find more details on this website about how to train a cat to do other things and how to stop cat bad behaviour.

Dog behavior can be difficult to understand, especially for pet owners. Some dogs will chase each other all over the street, sniff each other’s bottoms, and then do a few nasty things that may or may not result in a litter of pups. Other dogs will growl at other dogs, bare their teeth, and then snap at other dogs. The latter behavior can be disconcerting to pet owners who are fond of walking their dogs, but who are afraid of alienating themselves from other pet owners who have less aggressive canines.

Dog breeders and owners describe this canine-canine war as dog aggression, which is technically a dog’s intent to do harm to another dog. Dog snap at other dogs is only one display of aggression, and it comes in the category of loud barking and growling at other dogs. Dogs show aggression not so much because they want to hurt another dog, but because they are defending themselves from potential harm. Such defense tactics are undertaken by dogs to gain a higher status over a potential rival, or simply because of built in instincts or traits that make them feel that they are dominant versus other dogs. Some dogs may also develop hormonal imbalance, prompting them to exercise dominance over other dogs by showing dog aggression.

Aggression is common, although some breeds such as bulls and terriers are more likely to display aggression as they age. If a dog starts off life as an abused or attacked pup, then he may be fearful of other dogs and thus exercise defense-based aggression or snap at other dogs. In particular, dogs can be aggressive toward dogs or objects that resemble anything that threatened or attacked them in the past. If your dog snap at other dogs, therefore, may simply be a sign that your dog is defending his or her territory, or is remembering something in his or her past.

If your dog continues to snap at other dogs, then you might want to take a look at the following tips to help you control your dog. If all else fails, take your dog to the vet or a canine behavior specialist for more information on how he or she can be made less aggressive or harmful.

- When dogs lack exercise, they can have a lot of pent up energy, and can actually be more emotionally and mentally unstable. Take your dog out often and make him or her exercise by jogging together, or by playing fetch in the park. This can allow your dog to use up all the energy that he or she has, giving him or her less time and resources to snap at other dogs.

- If you have a puppy, discipline him or her and start him or her on a disciplined life without abusing him or her. A well-disciplined dog is less likely to do harm, and certainly less likely to snap at other dogs.

- If you prefer a dog that is docile and quiet, then you might want to select a breed beforehand that is not prone to snap at other dogs or other forms of dog aggression. Choose toy dogs or retrievers if you have little time to undertake any disciplinary measures. If you are an experienced breeder or trainer, however, then go for terriers and bulls, but be sure to instill discipline early.

- Act as a dominant owner. If a dog senses that he or she is dominant in your house, or the seeming owner of it, then it can turn itself into the alpha dog and establish itself as the leader of your pack. It can then think that it has the license to snap at other dogs and display aggression.

- As much as possible, keep only one dog at home. The more dogs you have, the more defensive your dog will become, and the more likely he or she is to display aggressive behavior or snap at other dogs.

If you really want to stop your dog to snap at other dogs at the shortest possible time, you need a dog obedience training to help you transform you dog’s behavior problems. Bark Stop
My dog is scratching the base of my trees and ripping the bark off, how can I stop the tress from dying?

My dog is scratching the base of all my trees and ripping all the bark off, the scratch marks are getting quite deep from repeated scratching and I think at least one of my trees is dying. The trees are about 10 years old, a mix of evergreen native and deciduous ornamentals. What can I do to keep them alive now that the damage is done?

Sturdy wire. Depending on your dog's "reach" with his paws, wrap each tree base with enough wire to cover the circumference of the tree. You'll probably want to leave the height at least 2-3 feet. That way when your dog goes to scratch the trees, the wire will protect the tree, and also discourage him from scratching. Ask for something called "rabbit wire". It's sturdier than chicken wire, and will probably achieve the desired result.

Sounds like your dog is simply bored or frustrated. Is he in a fenced in area while he's doing this damage to the trees? He may need more exercise.

If you need to stop dog barking, you've come to the right place. I'm going to give you three quick tips to stop dog barking. These techniques will help you reign in your dog's barking problem.

Why is Your Dog Barking?
This is the first question any dog owner needs to ask before they can have any success trying to stop dog barking. Different dogs bark for different reasons, and how you handle their barking will vary widely depending on the reason for the barking.

Small dogs and puppies often bark out of fear. Small dogs often bark because they feel so little in comparison to people and other animals. Puppies, on the other hand, have a tendency to bark out of fear of being left alone. Each of these will be handled far differently than the dog who's barking to chase away the mail carrier or barking it up at squirrels.

Make sure you know why your dog is barking before you try to change their behavior. Your dog might be protecting his territory, demanding your attention, or just trying to communicate something to you.

Basic Training
You'll also have far more success stomping out barking if you've given your dog a basic training course. Learning to sit, stay, and heel helps you dog understand that there are times when you'll want him to do certain things and he'll be rewarded or praised if he gets the behavior right.

Then, when it comes to training him to stop barking, he'll at least know you're trying to teach him something.

When you do train the barking out of him, set up training sessions. Don't try to train your dog only when the barking moment arrives. Instead, train him ahead of time. If your dog barks every time there's a knock at the door, have a friend come by and knock. Give your dog a treat before he can bark. You'll condition him to look to you when there's a knock at the door instead of reacting by barking.

If your dog barks at people and other dogs when you're out for a walk, have a friend come around the corner at you with his dog. Go back and forth around that corner, commanding your dog to not bark. After about 20 minutes of this your dog will understand which behavior is displeasing you. Be patient. Training takes time.

Divert Your Dog's Attention
Sometimes controlling your dog's barking habit is as simple as using one of many diversion techniques. In many cases, the principle of “out of sight out of mind” works well to control dog barking.

To stop their barking dog some dog owners have changed see-through chain-link fences to solid fences to keep passers by out of view of their dog. You can also get the object of their barking out of sight by changing what the dog is looking at.

Get a tin can, fill it with pennies, and snap the lid back on top. When it shakes it makes a noise that many dog owners find attracts their dog's attention to the can and away from whatever their barking at. If you have hardwood floors, you might just drop the can on the floor.

Squirt guns and spray bottles also work well as a diversionary technique to stop your barking dog. Your dog barks, you squirt her. She forgets the kid on the bike outside and looks for the source of the water.

Use and elaborate on these techniques and you'll finally have the peace you're looking for.

What can I do to stop pet rats smelling? Need to make a complete list - do they smell more at different ages?

Hi, i used to have to bucks wen living in the UK, and since moving to AUS i would love to get some more but we are living in rented house and parents say the only reason i cant have any more is becos of their smell - we tried lots of things like Tap-A-Drop, Bob Martins, baby wipes .... I have been researching other things i can do but need to come up with a complete list to hopefully persuade my parents

- Yesterdays News / Carefresh etc (Anyone know were i could get something like this in North Sydney area?
- Change bedding every/every other day
- Clean the cage at least twice a week (Someone sed that its not a good idea to clean the cage too much becos they dont like not having their smell - is this right? how much is too often?
- Use Baby wipes
- B4 i used to have a metal barred cage and someone sed this traps the smell - im thinking of making my own and using connectable storage cubes - will they chew the plastic off?
- Bathe them reguarly
- Probably get 2 does

Thanks!

-Keep your rats in a powder coated cage, the urine sticks to galvanized steel and it has a nasty smell. Try and stay away from aquariums as there is no ventilation and they need to be cleaned much more often.
-Keep their diet low in protein as it is unhealthy for them and it causes their urine to smell worse
-Litter train your rats! If you train your rats to only relieve themselves in one place of the cage it minimizes smell one of these http://www.petsmart.com/global/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524441815361&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302047893&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302023695&bmUID=1182231853165&itemNo=10&In=Small+Pet&N=2047893&Ne=2 is absolutely perfect. With this little contraption you can use an odor free litter that clumps and holds in smell. Just like a miniature cat litter box!
I hope these things are helpful to you.

How many times have I told off a pet owner for having a pet whose neck is bigger than their head and heard “oh but he hardly eats anything!” If that was true the pet would be thin.

Pets are fat because they eat too much, it isn’t because they eat “just a tiny bit” of something. Pets don’t go to the shops on their own, they don’t have jobs or take part in surveys so the only person over feeding them is YOU. They don’t get their own dinner ready or shoplift snacks from the local store. They don’t have a hidden stash that they get out when you are in bed for a midnight feast. So there’s nobody else to blame but you.

When pets are neutered it often slows their metabolism so the usual amount of food is too much. Some dogs seem to survive on literally a handful of food a day. Neutering does not make them fat, food does. If you stopped feeding your neutered pet would it stay fat? Or would it get thin and die? If your pet is a good weight and healthy then that is the right amount. They don’t think you are an evil person for only giving them small amounts so get over it.

Owners often say “but he looks at me so sadly”. No he doesn’t, that’s just you imagining how sorry he is and he then reacts to your body language. If you really can’t stop overfeeding your pet you need help, seriously. You have some sort of emotional problem that stops you from imposing safe rules and you worry too much your pet will hate you. That’s not right.

One lady I know was warned repeatedly that her terrier was seriously overweight. At just 2 years old he was huge and instead of a mad, racing terrier loving life and investigating holes, she had a young dog that couldn’t even chase a ball. Most of his life was spent pottering about panting, he had no quality of life. By 3 years old he had joint problems and was on medication and despite being told she was killing him, she just couldn’t stop it. The dog died from heart failure at just 5 years of age. She had the audacity to cry.

You have to admit to your own failings as an owner. Is your pet spoilt? Do you have problems disciplining your kids or does your partner walk all over you? Do you comfort eat yourself? A lot of owners with overweight pets are seriously overweight themselves. Some say that having a fat pet makes them feel more normal. What? YOU have a choice, your pet doesn’t. Affecting your pet’s health is a selfish decision, not a measure of love. If the solution to your pet’s weight issues is your issues, then deal with them.

Sudden weight gain or loss in an animal can be a sign of serious illness and should always be investigated by a vet. Thyroid problems, Cushing’s disease, organ failure and lots more can cause those symptoms.

There are lots of commercial light diets and even light treats on the market so the pet can have a bit more bulk but not the calories. This is a waste of time though if you keep filling it up with treats or sharing your food with it. You have to be firm and set proper boundaries. For reasons of manners and respect never mind health, your pet should not be eating every time you do. If your cat or dog sits over you drooling, it isn’t hungry, it’s spoilt and it won’t start hating you if you grow up and put your foot down and send it away.

If you went out for a meal and the other diners pulled their chairs to your table and asked for food and stared at you all the way through the meal would you give them some? Would you imagine they would like you more if you did give them some? Of course not so why do it with your pet?

To lose a pet through accident or preventable illness is a tragedy and nobody’s fault. To lose a fat pet because you were too selfish to stop is appalling. Can you live with it?
